Does deleting a ChatGPT chat erase it everywhere?
Deleting a saved conversation is best understood as a two-stage process. First, ChatGPT removes the conversation from the account view you use to access your history. Second, OpenAI schedules the conversation for permanent deletion from its systems within 30 days, subject to stated exceptions.
That means deletion is effective for your visible chat history right away, but it is not an instant guarantee that every system copy has disappeared. OpenAI’s current help documentation allows continued retention when information has already been de-identified and disassociated from the account, or when security or legal obligations require it to be kept longer.
What disappears immediately when you delete a chat?
The conversation is removed from the account view as soon as you confirm deletion. It should no longer appear in the normal history sidebar, and OpenAI says a deleted chat cannot be recovered through the ChatGPT interface, its APIs, or Support.

Immediate disappearance therefore answers the question “Can I still open this from my history?” with no. It does not mean all processing, retention, or legally required copies end at that exact moment.
What happens during OpenAI’s 30-day deletion window?
OpenAI describes 30 days as the target window for permanent deletion of a deleted saved chat from its systems. The wording is important: this is a scheduled deletion period, not a promise that every representation is destroyed at the instant you press Delete.
De-identification exception
OpenAI says information that has already been de-identified and disassociated from your account may not be handled as an account-linked chat waiting for deletion. In practical terms, removing the conversation from your history does not necessarily undo processing that has already separated data from your account identity.

OpenAI may retain information longer when security or legal obligations require it. Those exceptions are why the 30-day statement should be read as the standard schedule, not an unconditional deadline for every possible copy or record.
What the published rule does not specify
The consumer-facing retention statement does not provide a separate, universal timetable for every backup, log, or internal system. Do not assume that deleting a chat gives you a way to verify the status of infrastructure copies; the user-facing result is that the chat is gone from your account view, while system deletion follows the stated schedule and exceptions.
Does archiving a ChatGPT conversation delete it?
No. Archive only removes a conversation from the regular sidebar. The chat remains saved in your account, remains searchable, and follows the same retention rules as other saved chats.

Use Archive when you want a cleaner history without losing the conversation. Use Delete when you want to start the deletion process. Because archived chats are retained, archiving is not a privacy substitute for deletion.

Are Temporary Chats really deleted?
Temporary Chat has different defaults from an ordinary saved conversation, but it is not an instant-erasure mode. While a chat remains temporary, it does not appear in history, is not used to improve OpenAI models, and does not create or update memories. OpenAI may nevertheless keep a copy for up to 30 days for safety.
What Temporary Chat changes
- History: The conversation does not appear in your normal chat history.
- Model improvement: It is not used to improve OpenAI models while it remains temporary.
- Memory: It does not create or update memories while it remains temporary.
- Safety retention: A copy may be retained for up to 30 days.
What happens if you save a Temporary Chat?
Saving a Temporary Chat converts it into a regular chat. From that point, it follows ordinary account and workspace settings, including normal history behavior and the deletion process for saved chats.
Will deleting a chat delete uploaded files?
Not necessarily. A file saved separately in ChatGPT’s Library is a separate copy and must be deleted from the Library as well. Deleting the conversation that used the file does not, by itself, remove that Library item.
Library files
After deleting a conversation, open your Library and look for files uploaded or generated during that work. Delete any file you no longer want retained. Treat the conversation and the Library item as two separate deletion tasks.
Connected-app data
If the conversation used data from a connected application, deleting the ChatGPT conversation removes the data retained within that conversation from the ChatGPT account. It does not delete the original records in the connected service. You must manage those originals in the external application under its own retention and deletion controls.

Does turning off “Improve the model for everyone” delete old chats?
No. The “Improve the model for everyone” setting controls future model-use preferences; it does not delete, hide, or erase saved conversations that are already in your account.
If your goal is to remove a particular conversation, delete that conversation. If your goal is to change how future conversations may be used, change the model-improvement setting. These are separate privacy actions and one does not replace the other.
How do I permanently delete a regular ChatGPT chat?
Use the chat’s own menu rather than Archive. The deletion confirmation removes it from your account view immediately and starts the system-deletion schedule.
- Open ChatGPT and display the chat history sidebar.
- Find the conversation you want to remove.
- Select the three-dot menu beside that conversation.
- Choose Delete.
- Confirm the deletion when prompted.
Once confirmed, the chat should disappear from the account view. OpenAI states that deleted chats cannot be recovered through ChatGPT, the API, or Support, so copy out anything you need before confirming.
What is the difference between Delete, Archive, and Temporary Chat?
The options differ mainly in visibility, retention, model-improvement treatment, and whether a conversation becomes a normal saved chat.

Can OpenAI still see a deleted ChatGPT chat?
A deleted chat is no longer available in your account view, but the published deletion process allows up to 30 days for permanent system deletion and permits longer retention for security or legal reasons. It is therefore more accurate to say that account access ends immediately while system-level deletion is pending under OpenAI’s stated schedule.

The documentation does not establish that every deleted chat remains routinely viewable by staff, nor does it promise that all infrastructure copies disappear instantly. Avoid putting information into a chat if you need a guarantee that no service provider can retain it.

What about memories created from a chat?
Chat deletion and memory management should be treated as separate tasks. Current official guidance does not establish a universal rule that every memory created from a conversation is automatically removed when that conversation is deleted.
If a conversation may have contributed to a saved memory, review the account’s current Memory controls separately and remove entries you do not want retained. Deleting the chat alone should not be treated as confirmation that every related memory setting has changed.
Should you delete your entire OpenAI account instead?
Account deletion is a much broader and permanent decision than deleting one conversation. It prevents use of the associated OpenAI services, and OpenAI repeats that deleted chats are permanently removed within 30 days unless they were already de-identified or must be retained for security or legal reasons.
Choose account deletion only when you want to end the account and accept the loss of access to associated services. For a single sensitive conversation, deleting the chat, checking Library files, reviewing memories, and handling connected-service originals is usually the narrower action.

Before deletion
- Copy any information you are legally or practically required to keep; deletion is not recoverable through ChatGPT, APIs, or Support.
- Identify files uploaded during the conversation that may also exist in the Library.
- Note whether the chat used a connected application whose original data must be deleted elsewhere.
- Decide whether the conversation may have contributed to a memory that needs separate review.
After deletion
- Confirm that the conversation is gone from the history sidebar.
- Check the Library for separate file copies.
- Review the connected application if the chat imported external data.
- Review Memory controls when the conversation involved personal details you do not want retained there.
These checks address different storage locations. Removing the visible conversation is only one part of a complete cleanup.

Account deletion is permanent and ends access to associated OpenAI services, but OpenAI still describes a deletion period of up to 30 days for chats, with de-identification and security or legal exceptions. It is not an instant-erasure shortcut.
Is Temporary Chat appropriate for information that must never be retained?
