The printer may take time to wake, and exact behavior depends on its model and settings. Deep Sleep is not the same as Auto Power Off, so check the guide for your exact printer before changing settings.
What Deep Sleep does to a print job
Brother describes Deep Sleep as a lower-power state that follows Sleep Mode after the printer has been idle for a model- and setting-dependent period. Brother’s guides for the listed HL-L2400D and related models, and HL-L2325DW and related models, identify receipt of a job and pressing a control-panel button as wake conditions. The HL-L2370DW guide also says the printer can wake when it receives a job or when someone presses a control-panel button. Brother states that Deep Sleep Mode uses less power than Sleep Mode.
In practical terms, a print job can wake a printer from Deep Sleep; the documented behavior does not mean every printer wakes in exactly the same way or at the same speed. Consult the guide for your complete model name and its displayed status or wake instructions.
Deep Sleep is different from Auto Power Off
Do not treat Deep Sleep and Auto Power Off as interchangeable labels. Brother’s FAQ for the HL-L2370DW(XL), dated January 10, 2019, addresses Auto Power Off Mode and says: “The machine does not go into Power Off Mode when the machine is connected to a network.” That is a statement about Auto Power Off on that model family—not a general rule that network-connected Brother printers cannot enter Deep Sleep.

The same FAQ says to press the control-panel button and then send a print job to start printing after the relevant power-off state. It also gives Auto Power Off menu instructions under General Setup and Ecology. Use those steps only if they match the state and menu labels on your printer.
What to check when a Brother printer does not print after going idle
- Identify the exact printer and connection. Note the complete model name and whether the computer or device connects by Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or USB. Model and connection details matter when interpreting the manual.
- Check the model-specific guide. Look up how that printer distinguishes Sleep, Deep Sleep, and Auto Power Off, and follow its status and wake instructions.
- Try the documented wake behavior. Send a test job. If the printer does not respond, use the control-panel wake action listed in its guide, then try the job again.
- If it is fully powered off, check Auto Power Off instructions. Do not assume that instructions for this state apply to ordinary Deep Sleep.
- Change an idle-time setting only if your model offers one. Follow the exact manual or driver instructions for your printer and operating system.
A failure to print is not, by itself, evidence that Deep Sleep caused the problem. Brother’s cited guidance does not establish that changing a sleep setting fixes network, driver, print-queue, or connectivity faults.

Can you change or disable Deep Sleep?
There is no universal setting or menu path established for disabling Deep Sleep across Brother printers. Controls vary by model, and a configurable Sleep Time is not necessarily a Deep Sleep off switch.
For example, Brother’s HL-5450DN driver guidance, dated March 23, 2016, describes Sleep Time options called Auto, Printer Default, and Manual, with the setting saved in the machine. The article warns that steps and screens can differ by operating system and application. Those instructions apply to that model’s Sleep Time feature; they should not be assumed to exist on newer printers or to disable Deep Sleep. Use your printer’s own guide before adjusting an idle-time setting.

Which guidance applies to your printer?
The behavior and available controls are model-specific. The distinctions in Brother’s documentation are:
| State or setting | What Brother’s cited guidance says | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| Deep Sleep | Lower-power state following Sleep Mode; the listed guides show receipt of a job and a control-panel button as wake conditions. | Model families listed in Brother’s HL-L2400D/related and HL-L2325DW/related guides, and the HL-L2370DW guide. |
| Auto Power Off | Brother says the HL-L2370DW(XL) does not enter Power Off Mode while connected to a network; the FAQ describes pressing the panel button and then sending a job to start printing. | Brother’s HL-L2370DW(XL) FAQ, dated January 10, 2019. |
| Sleep Time | Auto, Printer Default, and Manual options are documented, with the setting saved in the machine. | Brother’s HL-5450DN driver guidance, dated March 23, 2016; not evidence of a universal Deep Sleep control. |
For menu paths and current operating-system-specific screens, use the online manual or support page for your exact model rather than carrying settings over from another Brother printer.
