Sometimes, but only when the entire plaintext path is inside an attested Trusted Execution Environment (TEE). Confidential computing encrypts data while it is being processed and can prevent cloud operators and ordinary infrastructure administrators from reading prompts or outputs in memory. The protection works when a client encrypts a request to a verified TEE, the approved inference workload alone receives the decryption key, and the result leaves through a protected route.

It does not automatically mean that an AI provider can never access your data. An API gateway, tokenizer, logging service, output filter, accelerator, or client device may handle plaintext outside the TEE. The practical question is therefore not whether a provider uses confidential computing, but where plaintext exists, who can release keys, and what the attestation actually covers.

What does confidential computing protect?

Confidential computing protects data in use: information held in memory while software processes it. Traditional encryption protects data at rest on storage and data in transit across a network. A hardware-based TEE adds isolation and memory encryption during execution, so the host operating system, hypervisor, cloud administrator, and neighboring workloads should not be able to read the protected contents.

Google defines confidential computing as protection of data in use with a hardware-based TEE. Microsoft similarly describes correctly configured confidential-computing services as preventing the cloud operator from accessing unencrypted customer data while it is being processed. These statements describe a boundary around a workload, not a blanket promise covering every service that touches an API request.

For AI, the sensitive material includes the original prompt, uploaded documents, system instructions, intermediate input representations, generated output, and sometimes conversation context. A TEE can protect those values only while they are inside its measured boundary. Encryption does not retroactively protect plaintext that was already accepted by another component or copied into a log.

Can an AI provider’s infrastructure operators read prompts or outputs?

They may be prevented from doing so inside the attested workload, but the answer is conditional. In a strong design, the provider’s operators can run and maintain infrastructure without obtaining the key that decrypts a request. A policy-controlled key service releases that key only after the client verifies that the expected hardware, firmware, software image, model-serving code, and configuration are running.

AWS describes Nitro isolation as having no mechanism for operators to access customer instances, while Microsoft describes operator protection when confidential computing is correctly configured. The defensible claim is therefore narrow: ordinary privileged administrators and infrastructure operators cannot read plaintext prompts or outputs from the attested workload during processing.

That is different from saying the AI company has no technical or administrative path to your data. The provider may control the API service, the code that performs tokenization, the logging configuration, the model image, the attestation verifier, or the policy that defines an acceptable measurement. Those controls determine whether plaintext ever reaches the protected boundary and whether a new workload is allowed to obtain keys.

How does confidential AI processing work?

1. The request is encrypted for a specific workload

The client should obtain a key or encryption session bound to the intended confidential service rather than sending plaintext to an ordinary API endpoint. The request remains encrypted until code inside the TEE receives the decryption key. In a robust architecture, the client can check the identity and freshness of the TEE before trusting it with sensitive content.

2. Hardware isolates memory and encrypts it during execution

The TEE uses processor-backed isolation and memory encryption to separate the workload from the host operating system, hypervisor, and other tenants. This protects memory contents from a curious host administrator or a compromised parent instance, but it does not make the application itself trustworthy. Code running inside the enclave can still read every prompt that is delivered to it.

3. Remote attestation produces a verifiable measurement

The hardware creates a signed attestation report, often called a quote, containing measurements of the boot chain and workload. A relying party verifies the signature and compares the measurements with an approved reference. Google describes attestation as producing cryptographic claims that a verifier can validate. The useful evidence is a fresh quote tied to the exact software, firmware, model-serving image, and request route, not merely a product name or a dashboard badge.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. A key server releases decryption keys only after policy checks

The attestation result is fed into a key-management policy. If the measurement, signer, firmware version, or security configuration does not match the approved policy, the key service refuses release. Anthropic describes this pattern for confidential inference, and AWS Nitro Enclaves integrates attestation with key-management policies. Key release turns an attestation statement into an enforceable confidentiality boundary.

5. The workload decrypts, runs inference, and returns a protected result

Inside the approved environment, the service decrypts the prompt, tokenizes it, runs inference, and encrypts the output for the client. Every helper process that handles cleartext must either be inside the same measured boundary or be separately covered by an equivalent attestation and policy. Otherwise, the design protects only one segment of the request path.

Where can plaintext prompts and outputs still appear?

Anthropic’s confidential-inference description identifies two important cleartext locations: the API server, which handles a prompt, transforms it into tokens, and performs much of the request logic; and the inference server that runs the model. The inference-server TEE does not automatically protect the API server. This distinction is central to evaluating any provider claim.

  • API gateways and authentication services: A gateway may terminate TLS, inspect request fields, enforce quotas, or transform content before forwarding it. If it receives the original prompt in cleartext, a model-side enclave cannot erase that exposure.
  • Tokenization and orchestration: Tokenizers, routing services, safety classifiers, retrieval systems, and output filters may see prompts or generated text. They must be included in the attested boundary or treated as separate trusted components.
  • Application logging: Debug logs, traces, error reports, token counts, prompt previews, and rejected-output records can preserve sensitive material even when inference memory is protected. Confidential computing does not stop an application from intentionally logging its own inputs.
  • Storage and backups: Queues, caches, conversation databases, crash dumps, and backup systems may hold plaintext after processing. Their encryption, retention, and deletion policies are separate controls.
  • Accelerator paths: A CPU TEE does not by itself prove that a GPU or other accelerator receives encrypted and attested data. The device, driver, firmware, memory path, and model execution must be covered by the provider’s confidentiality and attestation story.
  • The client device: Plaintext exists before the client encrypts a request and after it decrypts a response. Malware, browser extensions, endpoint logging, screenshots, or shared clipboard tools can access it outside the cloud TEE.

What does remote attestation actually prove?

Remote attestation proves a cryptographic relationship between hardware and a measured software state. It can show that a particular boot chain, firmware version, operating-system component, enclave image, or signer is running. It does not prove that the code is bug-free, that the model is accurate, that no data is logged, or that every network hop is inside the same boundary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verification must be independent enough to matter. A provider-controlled page saying “confidential” is weaker evidence than a client-verifiable quote whose measurement is tied to a documented reference value and a short validity period. The verifier also needs rules for firmware updates, image rotation, emergency rollback, and revoked signing keys. Otherwise, an approved identity can drift without the client noticing.

Attestation is also a statement about configuration at one point in time. It cannot prevent denial of service, detect every side channel, or guarantee that an administrator will not change a policy after the client has accepted a workload. Key-release policies should therefore require fresh evidence and fail closed when verification is unavailable.

Does a GPU or other AI accelerator have to be confidential too?

Yes, if the model execution path sends sensitive data to that device. Protecting CPU memory while copying plaintext into an unprotected accelerator can leave the prompt exposed to the host, device software, or a privileged operator. The provider should explain whether accelerator memory is encrypted, whether device firmware is measured, and whether the attestation quote covers the device and driver versions.

Some deployments keep orchestration and key handling in a CPU TEE while using a separately protected accelerator. That can be valid, but the evidence must show how keys are transferred, how memory is isolated, and how results return to the attested process. If the provider cannot identify the accelerator boundary, treat the claim as protecting only the CPU-side portion of inference.

What threats does confidential computing not stop?

NVIDIA’s threat-model guidance lists several limits that apply broadly to confidential AI designs:

  • Malicious guest images: If a client or provider approves a compromised image, attestation can faithfully report that compromised image.
  • Vulnerable inference code: A memory-safety flaw or prompt-handling bug inside the TEE can expose data to an attacker who exploits the application.
  • Payload logging: The protected application can write prompts, outputs, or metadata to logs. Hardware isolation does not override application behavior.
  • Compromised attestation or key-release administrators: Whoever controls reference measurements, signing keys, verifiers, or key policies can widen the set of workloads allowed to decrypt data.
  • Side channels: Timing, memory-access patterns, cache behavior, traffic volume, and resource use may reveal information even when memory contents remain encrypted.
  • Denial of service: A host can stop, delay, isolate, or refuse to schedule a confidential workload without learning its plaintext.

These are not reasons to dismiss confidential computing. They define the additional controls needed around it: hardened application code, minimized telemetry, independent policy ownership, side-channel-aware implementation, and operational monitoring.

How should you evaluate a provider’s confidential-AI claim?

Ask for evidence in the following order. A provider that answers only with hardware names or a compliance logo has not yet established that prompts and outputs are protected end to end.

What deployment patterns provide different levels of protection?

Deployment pattern Where plaintext is protected Main remaining exposure Evidence to request
Encrypted API without confidential execution During network transport and storage, where configured Provider services can process plaintext in ordinary memory Encryption, retention, and access-control documentation
TEE around the inference process only Model execution memory inside the measured TEE API gateways, tokenizers, logs, accelerators, and client devices may see plaintext Plaintext data-flow map and enclave attestation
End-to-end attested confidential inference Every cleartext service and accelerator covered by verified TEEs and protected links Application bugs, malicious approved images, side channels, policy administrators, and endpoints Fresh quotes, reference measurements, key-release rules, logging controls, and accelerator evidence

How can an organization deploy confidential AI safely?

  1. Classify the data. Separate regulated records, trade secrets, credentials, and ordinary text so that the strongest controls are applied where the impact of exposure is highest.
  2. Draw the request path. Mark encryption boundaries, plaintext endpoints, model servers, accelerators, queues, logs, backups, and client devices before selecting a service.
  3. Define an allowlist of measurements. Record the accepted firmware, enclave image, model version, driver, signer, and configuration. Treat updates as security changes requiring review.
  4. Bind key release to attestation. Configure the key service to reject stale, unknown, revoked, or mismatched measurements. Keep an audit trail of each release decision without recording the protected payload.
  5. Disable content logging. Remove prompt and output bodies from application logs, traces, debugging tools, support exports, and crash reports. Verify the setting with operational tests and access reviews.
  6. Test failure behavior. Stop key release when attestation is unavailable, a component is outside policy, or an accelerator cannot be verified. Confirm that the system fails closed rather than silently falling back to a normal endpoint.
  7. Protect the endpoint. Secure the workstation, browser, mobile device, or local application that holds plaintext before encryption and after decryption.
  8. Reassess side channels and availability. Decide whether timing, traffic volume, model responses, or denial of service could reveal sensitive information or create unacceptable operational risk.

So, can confidential computing keep an AI provider from reading your data?

It can keep infrastructure operators and ordinary privileged administrators from reading prompts and outputs inside a correctly configured, attested workload. That is a meaningful improvement over conventional processing, especially for sensitive enterprise inference.

It cannot establish that the entire AI provider is unable to access your data unless every plaintext endpoint is covered. The provider’s API layer, application code, logs, accelerator path, trust roots, and retention systems remain part of the security decision. Treat confidential computing as one enforceable boundary in a larger design, not as a universal “the provider can never see it” guarantee.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does encryption in transit alone stop an AI provider from seeing prompts?

No. Transport encryption protects the connection between client and service, but the service normally decrypts the request for processing. Preventing operator access during inference requires an attested confidential-execution design and controls for every other plaintext component.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What happens when attestation fails during an AI request?

A properly bound key-release policy withholds the decryption key, so the workload cannot process the protected prompt. Systems should fail closed rather than silently route the request to an ordinary, non-confidential endpoint.

Can confidential computing hide metadata such as request size or timing?

Not necessarily. Network volume, timing, resource use, and memory-access patterns can remain visible outside the TEE and may leak information. Reducing that risk requires traffic padding, batching, constant-time techniques, or other side-channel mitigations appropriate to the workload.

Who should control the attestation and key-release trust roots?

The party with the greatest confidentiality requirement should have meaningful approval or verification authority, rather than relying solely on the service operator. Independent verification, documented measurement changes, revocation procedures, and auditable key policies reduce the risk of an administrator silently broadening access.
