PC storefronts are part of the same announced ecosystem
Xbox PC, Steam, and Battle.net are listed separately in Activision’s supported-platform information, but they are all PC access routes. Their inclusion means a PC player is not automatically isolated from console players. Cross-play is a game-level feature, not a guarantee that the stores use identical launchers, purchasing rules, graphics options, or account screens.
Cross-play also does not mean that every platform has feature parity in every area. A platform can participate in online matchmaking while lacking local split-screen, a physical edition, or a particular control option. Treat each capability separately when choosing a version.
What to check before inviting a friend
Because the game is still pre-release at the time of the announced information, Activision has not published a final, universal menu path for managing cross-play friends. At launch, use this platform-neutral checklist rather than relying on an older Call of Duty menu guide:
- Install Modern Warfare 4 on one of the six announced platform families or services and apply the latest update.
- Sign in to the platform network and complete any in-game account setup the title requests.
- Open the multiplayer social or friends area. Look for the game’s cross-platform friend search or invitation option.
- Add the other player’s in-game identity, not merely the local console profile, if the game presents both choices.
- Check the multiplayer privacy and cross-play controls. If a cross-play switch is present, make sure both players’ settings allow the intended matchmaking pool.
- Send an invitation from the in-game social list and confirm that both players are in the same party before starting matchmaking.
Labels can change between launch builds, so a missing menu name is not proof that cross-play was removed. Update the game, restart it, and consult the current Activision support instructions if the social list does not show a cross-platform option.

What cross-progression does—and does not—confirm
The announced promise
Nintendo’s official announcement explicitly says Modern Warfare 4 multiplayer will feature cross-progression. In practical terms, that is a promise that progression is designed to be available when a player moves between supported versions rather than being permanently trapped on one device.
This is especially relevant for players who use a console at home and a PC elsewhere, or who may change from one supported console to another. It also means that cross-play and cross-progression are intended to work together: you can play with friends on another platform and have the announced progression system span supported platforms.
The item list has not been published
“Cross-progression” is a broad feature label. The cited announcement does not list which individual items or statistics carry over. It does not establish, for example, whether every weapon level, cosmetic, battle-pass reward, campaign checkpoint, setting, leaderboard entry, or competitive rating transfers in every direction.
Do not treat the announcement as an item-by-item inventory guarantee. Until Activision publishes a detailed transfer list, the accurate statement is that cross-progression is officially announced, while the exact categories and exceptions remain unspecified.

Cross-progression is separate from buying the game again
Progress transfer and purchase entitlement are different questions. A feature can let a profile retain eligible progress without making one purchase usable on every storefront. Conversely, a platform entitlement can cover more than one device without proving that every type of progress transfers.
Xbox Wire identifies Modern Warfare 4 as an Xbox Play Anywhere game, and the Xbox Store listing exposes that capability. That is useful for Xbox console and Xbox PC ownership, but it should not be used as a substitute for the broader cross-progression announcement. Play Anywhere describes an Xbox purchase and device relationship; cross-progression describes the movement of eligible game progress.
Split-screen: exactly where it is confirmed
Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5
Activision’s Modern Warfare 4 editions FAQ gives the clearest wording: “Split-screen multiplayer gameplay (two players sharing a screen) for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will be available on XBOX Series X|S and PlayStation 5.” That confirms local two-player multiplayer on those current-generation consoles.
The statement is about two players sharing one screen. It is not a promise of four-player local play, a campaign split-screen mode, or support for every multiplayer playlist. The published wording also does not specify whether a particular local mode can simultaneously include remote players, so check the launch documentation for that combination.

There is no equivalent confirmation for Xbox PC, Steam, or Battle.net in the cited FAQ. PC versions can support online cross-play while offering no local split-screen, because online matchmaking and rendering two local viewpoints are separate technical features. The responsible pre-launch description is therefore unconfirmed, not an absolute claim that PC split-screen can never exist.
Nintendo Switch 2
Nintendo confirms cross-play and cross-progression for the multiplayer experience, but the cited information does not confirm split-screen on Switch 2. Do not infer local multiplayer support from the console’s portability, Joy-Con 2 mouse-control option, or its inclusion in the launch lineup. Those are different capabilities.
What you need for local play
For a confirmed console setup, plan for two compatible controllers, two player profiles or sign-in identities if the game requests them, and a display connected to the Xbox Series X|S or PS5 running the game. The exact join prompt and whether a second player must sign into a network account can vary by launch build. If the second controller is not detected, pair it with the console first, verify that it controls a separate profile, and then enter the multiplayer local-play menu.

Activision and Xbox Wire list October 23, 2026 as the release date. The information establishing these features was current on October 19, 2026, four days before launch. That makes the cross-play, cross-progression, and split-screen statements pre-release commitments rather than observations from a public launch build.
Pre-release material can be refined by a day-one update, and support pages can be amended when the final menus and modes are available. The safest buying decision is to rely on the confirmed scope above and then recheck Activision’s support page after launch if you need a detail that was not enumerated, such as a specific playlist, progression category, or Switch 2 local mode.
Choosing the right version for your group
Choose a console version for confirmed couch play
If two people want to play on one television, Xbox Series X|S and PS5 are the only versions with explicit two-player split-screen confirmation. Select between them based on the console your household already owns and the platform network your friends use; both are included in the announced cross-play ecosystem.
Choose PC for flexibility, not confirmed split-screen
Xbox PC, Steam, and Battle.net are sensible choices when your group plays at desks or uses PCs with different storefront preferences. They are included in cross-play and cross-progression announcements, but none has a published split-screen confirmation. Buy a PC version only if online play meets your needs or if a later official update confirms local support.

Switch 2 is included in the announced multiplayer cross-play and cross-progression ecosystem. That makes it a valid online option for a mixed-platform group. The available information does not establish two-player local split-screen, so do not select it specifically for one-screen multiplayer until Nintendo or Activision publishes that confirmation.
Troubleshooting common expectations
A friend on another platform cannot join
- Confirm that both copies are updated to the same current build.
- Verify that both players are online and have completed the game’s sign-in prompts.
- Use the in-game social search rather than a platform-only friends list.
