No—AI-RAN does not inherently require 5G. It is a family of ways to apply artificial intelligence to radio access networks (RAN): optimizing radio functions, running AI and RAN workloads on shared computing, or hosting AI applications at network sites. In practice, nearly all announced commercial paths and operator trials are centered on 5G and 5G-Advanced, with vendors describing a route toward 6G. Existing networks can potentially be upgraded rather than replaced, but compatibility depends on the operator’s baseband, radios, transport, power and cloud architecture. The clearest published performance result so far is a typical 10–15% uplink-throughput improvement in initial laboratory measurements of AI-based channel estimation, announced by Deutsche Telekom, Nokia and NVIDIA on October 21, 2026. Field validation was still planned, so that figure is evidence of potential—not a guaranteed live-network gain.
What is AI-RAN?
AI-RAN means using artificial intelligence in and around the radio access network, the part of a mobile system that connects phones and other devices to cellular sites. The term does not name a single air interface, chipset or 3GPP generation. The AI-RAN Alliance’s 2025 description organizes the work into three distinct areas.
AI-for-RAN
AI-for-RAN applies machine-learning models to radio operations. Examples include channel estimation, beam management, scheduling, interference control, energy management and optimization of capacity. The objective is to make an existing RAN perform more efficiently or adapt more quickly to changing radio conditions.

AI-and-RAN
AI-and-RAN places AI workloads and RAN workloads on shared computing infrastructure. Instead of dedicating every accelerator or server to one function, an operator can allocate resources between radio processing and other models as demand changes. This can improve utilization, but it also introduces strict requirements for latency, isolation, determinism, power and lifecycle management.

AI-on-RAN
AI-on-RAN uses network infrastructure to host AI applications and services, often close to users at edge locations. Video analytics, industrial vision, robotics and other low-latency workloads are possible examples. The Alliance describes AI-on-RAN application performance on “5G and beyond,” which signals a current 5G focus without making 5G a conceptual requirement.
Does AI-RAN require 5G?
No. AI-RAN is an architectural approach, not a 5G radio standard. An AI model can optimize a radio function in different generations if the operator has suitable data, software interfaces and computing capacity. However, the commercial examples documented in 2026 are predominantly 5G-based, and the industry roadmap is being discussed in relation to 5G-Advanced and eventual 6G.
Why 5G dominates current deployments
5G provides a modern, software-oriented RAN foundation, virtualization options and edge-computing locations that make AI workloads easier to introduce. Current operator trials also target 5G performance metrics and 5G service use cases. Nokia’s July 15, 2026 platform announcement positions its AI-native platform for 5G and 5G-Advanced, with a software path toward 6G; that is a vendor roadmap, not proof that all AI-RAN systems depend on 5G.
What about 4G networks?
AI-RAN may be applicable to a 4G or mixed 4G/5G network when the required RAN functions can expose data and accept the model’s decisions, but the cited announcements do not establish a universal 4G compatibility guarantee. An operator should verify support for its specific radio units, baseband software, timing and fronthaul before assuming that an AI-RAN package can optimize LTE equipment. In many networks, the practical first step will be to apply AI to shared operations or transport data while 4G and 5G cells continue serving users.
Can AI-RAN work with existing mobile infrastructure?
Potentially, yes. Nokia describes three deployment routes in its July 15, 2026 announcement. They differ in how much new hardware and software an operator must add.

| Installed-base plug-in | An AI-accelerated capacity unit alongside an existing baseband deployment | Operators that want additional AI capacity without changing a site footprint | Nokia says this avoids replacing hardware for its existing AirScale customers; compatibility with other installed systems is not established |
| Dedicated accelerated node | A standalone AI-RAN node operating alongside the current network | Sites or locations with a specific AI, capacity or edge requirement | Requires space, power, cooling, transport and operational integration |
| Cloud-native commercial off-the-shelf deployment | RAN and AI software on commercial servers, with accelerators as required | Cloud-oriented networks able to run containerized, automated workloads | Performance and determinism depend on the server, accelerator, software stack and orchestration design |
The installed-base option is an upgrade path described by one vendor, not a universal promise. Before selecting it, an operator must check baseband model and software release, radio and fronthaul compatibility, synchronization, management systems, security controls, available rack power and cooling, and whether the intended AI function can run within the site’s latency budget.
What performance gains has AI-RAN shown?
The strongest quantified result in the available public announcements is a laboratory measurement, not a general field benchmark. On October 21, 2026, Deutsche Telekom, Nokia and NVIDIA reported that AI-based uplink channel estimation produced typical 10–15% throughput improvements in initial laboratory measurements. They also reported larger gains under more complex radio conditions and said field validation was the next step. The announcement is available from Deutsche Telekom.

A better estimate can allow the system to choose modulation, coding, scheduling or multiple-input multiple-output parameters more effectively. The reported number applies to that tested AI-based function and laboratory setup; it should not be converted into a promise that every subscriber will see 10–15% faster service.
Other published figures
Nokia said in its July 2026 product announcement that its AI-native platform had demonstrated “more than 20% efficiency gains” through AI-driven radio innovations and described a target of more than 100% spectral-efficiency gains by 2028. Both statements are vendor claims; the latter is a forward-looking target. They are not independent validation and are not directly equivalent to Deutsche Telekom’s uplink-throughput laboratory measurement.
No neutral, cross-vendor field study in the cited material provides a comparable percentage across operators, spectrum bands, traffic mixes and radio conditions. A responsible business case should therefore model a range of outcomes and require the supplier to define exactly which metric is being improved.

What did the operator trials actually demonstrate?
Nokia reported that Elisa ran voice, mobile data and video analytics concurrently on an AI-RAN platform in its 5G network. Nokia said distributed deployment and evaluation of customer use cases and commercial AI-RAN services were expected in 2027; the October 21, 2026 announcement describes the status.

Which AI-RAN benefits should an operator measure?
AI-RAN has several possible value propositions. They should be measured separately because success in one does not establish success in the others.
Radio and spectrum efficiency
Measure cell-edge throughput, uplink and downlink spectral efficiency, latency distribution, block-error rate, retransmissions and quality of experience under defined loads. Record the band, channel bandwidth, antenna configuration, mobility profile and weather or propagation conditions. A gain in a controlled channel-estimation test may not appear equally in dense urban, indoor or rural cells.
Energy efficiency
Track joules per transported bit, site power, accelerator utilization and cooling overhead over a representative day. AI can reduce energy by putting radios or compute into lower-power states, but additional accelerators and cooling can offset savings. Measure the complete site, not only the model’s processor.

Shared-infrastructure utilization
For AI-and-RAN designs, examine how effectively compute is shared while preserving radio deadlines. Useful measures include average and peak accelerator utilization, workload-placement latency, failed or dropped jobs, and the amount of capacity reserved for emergency radio demand.
New edge services
For AI-on-RAN, evaluate application latency, inference cost, data-egress reduction, privacy controls, tenant isolation and service availability. A successful video-analytics trial does not prove better spectrum efficiency, and a radio optimization gain does not prove that third-party AI services will generate revenue.
How should you evaluate an AI-RAN proposal?
Use the following sequence before approving a rollout. It keeps architectural fit and evidence quality ahead of headline percentages.
- Inventory the installed network. Record baseband and radio models, software releases, fronthaul and backhaul capacity, synchronization, site power, cooling, rack space and the split between 4G, 5G non-standalone and 5G standalone.
- Define one measurable use case. Choose a target such as uplink throughput in a congested cell, energy per bit during low traffic, or latency for a named edge application. Set a baseline period and acceptance threshold.
- Classify the evidence. Label each claimed result as simulation, laboratory measurement, operator trial or field-validated production result. Ask for test topology, spectrum, traffic profile, sample size and duration.
- Choose an integration route. Compare an installed-base plug-in, a separate accelerated node and cloud-native commercial-server deployment against site and transport constraints.
- Run a controlled pilot. Use matched cells or time windows, retain a rollback path and monitor radio KPIs, application KPIs, compute utilization, power and alarms. Do not change multiple optimization features at once.
- Validate operations and security. Check model-update governance, data residency, access control, supply-chain security, observability, incident response and whether engineers can troubleshoot AI decisions.
- Set expansion gates. Expand only when the measured benefit survives peak load, mobility, bad-channel conditions, software upgrades and maintenance events, with total cost of ownership included.
What are the main technical and operational risks?
- Latency violations: RAN processing has hard timing deadlines. A model that is accurate but slow can reduce service quality.
- Model drift: Changes in devices, traffic, spectrum or propagation can make training data less representative.
- Resource contention: AI inference spikes can compete with radio workloads unless capacity reservations and priority controls are enforced.
- Opaque failures: Engineers need logs, confidence scores, fallback algorithms and deterministic safe modes when a model behaves unexpectedly.
- Power and cooling limits: Accelerators may require infrastructure that older sites cannot provide without electrical or physical upgrades.
- Interoperability constraints: A vendor’s plug-in may depend on a particular baseband family, software release or management system.
- Security and privacy: Shared platforms increase the importance of isolation, signed model artifacts, access controls and clear handling of subscriber or video data.
- Evidence inflation: A laboratory percentage, a vendor target and a trial demonstration answer different questions. Treating them as interchangeable produces unrealistic forecasts.
Is AI-RAN a stepping stone to 6G?
Vendors present AI-RAN as part of the evolution from 5G-Advanced toward 6G. Nokia describes a software path to 6G, and the AI-RAN Alliance frames AI-on-RAN around 5G and beyond. That makes AI-RAN relevant to 6G planning, but it does not mean today’s platform will automatically become a 6G network. Operators should demand a documented migration plan covering hardware reuse, software interfaces, spectrum changes, standards compliance and lifecycle support.
The practical near-term question is not whether a network carries a “6G-ready” label. It is whether an AI function delivers a measured benefit on the operator’s current cells without compromising reliability, security or cost. A modular design that can add compute and update software is more useful than an unqualified future-generation promise.

What is the bottom-line answer for network owners?
AI-RAN does not require 5G in principle, but 5G is the center of current commercial work. Existing infrastructure may be improved through an added AI-accelerated capacity unit, a neighboring accelerated node or cloud-native software on commercial servers, subject to equipment compatibility. The 10–15% uplink-throughput result reported in initial laboratory measurements is encouraging, while field performance remains to be validated. Treat AI-RAN as a use-case-led upgrade: define the metric, establish a baseline, pilot safely and expand only on independently measured results.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can AI-RAN and traditional RAN operate at the same site?
Yes, a dedicated accelerated node can be deployed alongside an existing network, according to Nokia’s described options. The site still needs adequate power, cooling, transport, synchronization and management integration, and the two environments must have a tested failover and operations model.
Does AI-RAN replace the need for network engineers?
No. AI can automate optimization, but engineers remain responsible for policy, model governance, safety limits, troubleshooting and rollback. Teams also need skills in radio engineering, cloud operations, data quality and machine-learning lifecycle management.
Will subscribers notice an AI-RAN upgrade immediately?
Not necessarily. Benefits may appear as higher capacity at busy times, steadier uplink performance or lower energy use rather than a uniform speed increase. Subscriber impact depends on the function optimized, the cells selected and whether the measured gain survives live traffic and mobility.
What data does an AI-RAN system need?
Typical systems use radio measurements, traffic and quality-of-service counters, topology and operational telemetry, and sometimes application-level signals. The exact data depends on the use case; operators should establish retention, anonymization, access and residency rules before training or inference.
