No. A PS5 headset does not need its own 3D-audio, surround-sound, or spatial-processing feature. The console handles the 3D processing with Tempest 3D AudioTech, and compatible stereo headsets can receive that audio over USB or through the DualSense controller’s 3.5 mm jack. Before buying, focus on whether the exact headset connects to PS5, how it handles game and chat audio, and whether it suits your comfort and device needs.
What does “3D audio” mean on PS5?
Tempest 3D AudioTech is the PS5’s built-in engine for positioning sounds in a game’s audio mix. Sony describes it as capable of conveying where sounds come from—for example, footsteps in another room. The processing happens on the console; the headset does not have to decode a proprietary 3D format or carry a 3D-audio badge.
Sony says a PS5-compatible stereo headset offers the best 3D-audio experience because it can deliver audio to each ear separately. In practice, the console can use the difference between the signals sent to your left and right ears to create a sense of direction. A headset’s job is to reproduce those two channels clearly. Its stereo capability and PS5 connection matter more than marketing terms such as “7.1,” “surround,” or “spatial.”
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

This does not mean every headset will sound identical. Headphone tuning, fit, comfort, and the game’s mix all affect what you hear. It means only that a headset-specific 3D feature is not a prerequisite for the PS5 to provide its own 3D-audio processing.

Will any headphones work with PS5 3D audio?
Many compatible stereo headsets and headphones can work, but connection type is the first thing to verify. Sony says headsets that connect through a 3.5 mm jack, USB-A, or USB-C can work for 3D Audio; for USB devices, check that the specific model supports PS5.
| Connection | What to check | Practical consideration |
|---|---|---|
| DualSense 3.5 mm jack | Confirm the headset or headphones have a compatible analog connection and any required microphone support. | A straightforward wired option; the controller is the connection point. |
| USB-A or USB-C | Confirm that the exact headset is PS5-compatible and that its cable or receiver fits the console. | USB compatibility is model-specific, so do not infer it from the connector alone. |
| Wireless with USB transmitter or adapter | Check that the included transmitter or adapter is explicitly supported on PS5. | Wireless operation depends on the headset’s PS5-supported adapter, not simply on its being wireless. |
| Bluetooth-only wireless | Do not assume it can connect directly for PS5 game audio. | Sony says third-party Bluetooth wireless headsets are not supported for direct PS5 game audio. |
A connector that physically fits is not, by itself, proof that every headset feature will work. Microphones, mute controls, game/chat balance, and wireless functions can depend on the model and its adapter. Check the manufacturer’s PS5 compatibility information for the exact model and, when relevant, the exact version or transmitter included in the package.
Is PULSE 3D required for PS5 3D audio?
No. PULSE 3D is Sony’s official wireless headset, engineered to take advantage of PS5 3D Audio, but it is one compatible option—not a requirement for Tempest processing. A compatible stereo headset can use the console’s 3D audio without being a PULSE model.
PULSE 3D may make sense if you want an official PS5-focused setup and headset controls designed for use with the console. Sony’s manual qualifies its 3D-audio support: it works on PS5 when the game supports 3D audio. Choose it for the convenience and features that suit you, rather than because its name implies a unique format that other headsets cannot reproduce.

Does every PS5 game use 3D audio the same way?
No. The audible effect depends on whether a game supports 3D audio and how its developers implement and optimize the sound. Sony notes that effects vary by title; the PULSE 3D manual likewise says the feature works when the game supports it.
That means a headset purchase cannot guarantee a particular positional effect in every game. In a supported title, you may notice directional cues more clearly; in another title, the effect may be different or unavailable. If a game sounds less spatial than expected, that alone does not prove your headset is incompatible. First check the game’s audio options and the console’s output settings.
How do you check PS5 audio settings with a headset?
After connecting the headset, set the console’s output device and headphone options in its sound settings. Sony’s support path is Settings > Sound > Audio Output; the exact labels can vary with system software and device.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Connect the headset using its supported PS5 connection: the DualSense 3.5 mm jack, USB, or its PS5-compatible wireless transmitter.
- On the PS5, open Settings > Sound > Audio Output.
- Choose the appropriate output device and review the headphone settings available for that connection.
- Try a game that supports 3D audio and listen for the result. If you do not hear the expected effect, check the game’s own audio settings as well as the console settings.
Supported PULSE models also expose 3D-audio and equalizer controls through the Sound control-center menu. Those device-specific controls are not a general requirement for third-party stereo headsets. If a setting is missing, the menu may differ because of the console’s software version or the connected device.

What should you compare before buying a PS5 headset?
Once you have confirmed the connection, compare the features that change everyday use. A long feature list is less useful than knowing which trade-offs matter for your setup.
Connection and included adapter
Identify exactly how the headset reaches the PS5. For wireless models, check whether the required USB transmitter or adapter is included and whether it supports PS5. For wired models, decide whether you prefer to connect to the controller or the console, and verify that the relevant cable and microphone functions are supported.
Stereo output and game sound
Look for a PS5-compatible stereo output path. Do not pay extra solely for a headset’s own surround or 3D-audio branding if your reason is to enable Tempest 3D AudioTech: that processing comes from the PS5. Other sound features can still be relevant to your preferences, but they are separate from the basic requirement for PS5 3D audio.

Microphone and chat controls
If you play with other people, check microphone quality and the location and behavior of mute controls. Also verify whether the headset offers convenient game/chat controls and whether those controls work on PS5—not just on a PC or another platform. A feature listed for one connection or device does not necessarily transfer to another.

Fit, comfort, and weight
Headset comfort is personal. Consider how the headband and earcups fit, how much clamping pressure you prefer, and whether you wear glasses. If you can try the headset in person, do so; otherwise, look for model-specific fit information and a return policy that lets you assess comfort. Weight is one useful comparison point, but it does not determine comfort by itself.
Battery and charging
For a wireless headset, compare the stated battery life with your typical play sessions and check how it charges. Treat advertised battery duration as a manufacturer figure rather than a guarantee of the same result in every use. Wireless play time can be affected by how the headset is used, so note whether a figure is described as “up to” a certain duration.
Use with other devices
If you also want to use the headset with a PC, phone, or another console, verify compatibility separately for each device and connection method. A headset that works with PS5 over USB, for instance, should not be assumed to offer the same wireless features or controls on a phone. List the devices you actually use and confirm the needed setup for each one before purchase.

Which PS5 headset should you buy?
Choose according to your connection, comfort, and use—not a claim that the headset itself must provide 3D audio.
- Choose PULSE 3D if you want Sony’s official wireless option and a PS5-focused setup.
- Choose another PS5-compatible stereo headset if its fit, microphone, controls, wireless adapter, battery, multi-device support, or price better suits you.
- Use headphones you already own if they connect through a supported method and meet your needs for game audio and, if needed, voice chat.
For any model, confirm compatibility for the exact product and included adapter before buying. “Wireless,” “Bluetooth,” “USB,” or “3D audio” in a product description is not enough on its own to establish that every feature will work on PS5.
What if 3D audio does not seem to work?
Check the connection and settings in order before replacing a headset. These checks distinguish a connection issue from a game-specific audio effect.
- Confirm the headset is connected through a method supported for that exact model. If it is wireless, check the PS5 compatibility of its transmitter or adapter.
- Open Settings > Sound > Audio Output and confirm the selected output device and available headphone settings.
- Check whether the game supports 3D audio and review its own audio options.
- Test the headset with another supported connection or another game, if available. If the issue is limited to one title, the game’s support or implementation may be the difference.
Do not treat a headset’s lack of proprietary 3D branding as the likely cause: the PS5’s processing does not depend on that branding. If game audio works but a microphone or control does not, check that specific feature’s compatibility rather than assuming the entire headset is unsupported.
