Usually, no. A factory reset erases data stored on the phone, but it does not necessarily clear the ownership checks that protect it. After a reset, Google may ask for the screen lock or a Google Account previously added and synced to the device. A Samsung Galaxy reset may also ask for the Samsung Account password. These are separate checks, not evidence that the reset failed.

What the two account locks mean

Prompt or protection What it checks What to try
Google Factory Reset Protection (FRP), also called Google Device Protection That the person setting up the phone is its owner. Google says verification can use the screen lock or a Google Account previously added and synced to the device; a guest account does not qualify. Enter the previously synced Google Account or the screen lock if the setup screen offers it. See Google’s Device Protection guidance.
Samsung Account verification The Samsung Account associated with the Galaxy device. Samsung’s reset instructions say its password may be requested when an account has been added. Use the Samsung Account password or Samsung’s official account recovery and support options. See Samsung UK’s reset guidance.

A Galaxy setup can involve both checks. Read the provider named on the screen: a Google prompt is not the same as a Samsung Account prompt, and each uses a different recovery route.

Does the reset method change what happens?

It can affect when credentials are requested, but it does not make account verification universally disappear. Follow instructions for the exact phone model and software version.

Reset route Before data is erased What may happen during setup
Reset from Settings Google says Settings asks for the screen lock before erasing the phone. Protection or account prompts can still depend on the device and its account state. Samsung’s flow may request the Samsung Account password.
Hardware buttons or Recovery menu The reset may require the old screen lock; the precise behavior depends on the device. Google verification may ask for an account previously on the phone. Samsung describes Google verification after a Recovery menu reset.

Google’s general guidance covers both data erasure and the possibility of post-reset ownership verification in its Android factory reset instructions. Samsung also describes FRP and available screen-lock alternatives in its Galaxy factory reset guidance. The exact prompts can vary by model, Android or One UI version, and configuration.

Before resetting a phone you can still access

  1. Back up important data. A factory reset removes local data, including apps and their local data. Content backed up to your Google Account may be restored after you sign in. Follow Google’s reset preparation guidance.
  2. Confirm your credentials. Make sure you know the Google Account on the device and its password, and keep the screen-lock credential available. If it is a Galaxy, also be ready for a Samsung Account password prompt.
  3. If transferring or giving away the device, remove the Google Account before resetting. Samsung’s FRP guidance describes removing the Google Account before reset to avoid FRP in that scenario. Use the manufacturer’s directions for your model while you can still access Settings.
  4. Follow the on-screen prompts. Do not assume that choosing Settings instead of Recovery will bypass every account check; Samsung may still request its account password.
  5. Wait if you recently changed your Google password. Google recommends waiting 24 hours before a factory reset after a recent password change. This is a recommendation in Google’s guidance, not a guaranteed unlock time.

If setup is blocked after a reset

  1. Identify the account named in the prompt. Google verification and Samsung Account verification are different processes.
  2. For a Google prompt, try the previously added and synced Google Account or the old screen lock if that option appears. Google’s Device Protection page explains the supported verification methods.
  3. If the Google password was just changed, allow the stated cooldown. Google’s reset guide recommends 24 hours before a factory reset after a recent password change. Samsung UK says its guidance may require waiting 24 hours or longer after account recovery before using a newly changed Google password for device verification. Actual prompts and timing can depend on the account and device.
  4. Recover forgotten credentials through the account provider. Google directs people who cannot sign in to its official sign-in help. For a Galaxy that remains blocked, contact Samsung support or an authorized service center; Samsung’s US guidance says proof of purchase may be needed for service-center assistance. See Samsung’s Google Device Protection guidance and Samsung UK’s reset guidance.
  5. For a company-managed phone, contact your IT administrator. Android Enterprise FRP controls are configured by an administrator before the reset, and behavior varies with the management mode and policy. See Android Enterprise’s FRP guidance.

Avoid third-party FRP bypass utilities, firmware tricks, or lock-removal services. The supported routes are account recovery, an offered screen-lock option, and authorized assistance. If the phone is not yours, return it to its owner or the seller rather than trying to access it.

What a factory reset does—and does not do

A reset erases data on the phone; it is not the same as clearing proof-of-ownership checks. Once setup verification succeeds, backed-up data may be restored by signing in, but erased local app data is not brought back just because an account prompt is resolved. Google’s factory reset instructions explain data loss and restoration.
