Yes, if the game license came from a PS4 disc. On a compatible PS5 with a disc drive, Sony requires that PS4 disc to remain inserted each time you play, even after the game is installed. Downloading a PS5 version through a PS4-disc upgrade does not change that requirement. A game bought separately from PlayStation Store, or upgraded from a digitally owned PS4 copy, follows the digital-license path and does not need a game disc.
There is no reliable title-by-title list because the same game name can be sold as a physical edition and as an independently owned digital edition. The important question is how your specific copy was obtained.

Sony’s backward-compatibility support page states: “You will need to keep the disc inserted each time to play the game.” That statement is specifically about PS4 discs used on PS5. It should not be stretched into an unverified, title-by-title claim about every physical PS5-native release.

How can I tell whether my copy is disc-bound?
Check the purchase path rather than the game’s artwork or the fact that files are already installed. The following checks normally identify the entitlement.
Look at how the game entered your library
- If you inserted a PS4 disc and installed the game, it is a physical entitlement. The disc is the access check.
- If you selected an upgrade after inserting a PS4 disc, the downloaded PS5 version remains tied to that disc.
- If you bought the game directly in PlayStation Store, it is a digital entitlement and does not depend on a disc.
- If you upgraded a digitally owned PS4 game, the upgrade follows your account’s digital license rather than a physical disc.
Do not use installation as proof of digital ownership
PS5 can copy game data from a disc to its internal storage, but that process is only installation. It does not create a second, separately owned digital license. If you remove the disc, the installed files can remain on the console, but the console still lacks the physical entitlement needed to launch that disc-based copy.
Do I need the disc every time after installing a PS4 game on PS5?
Yes. For a compatible PS4 game installed from a disc, insert the same disc whenever you start the game. This remains true after updates, after moving the game between storage devices, and after downloading an eligible PS5 version through the disc-based upgrade route.

Playing the original PS4 version
A PS4 disc in a PS5 with a working disc drive supplies the license check while the installed data supplies the game files. Ejecting the disc removes that check. Reinstalling the game later does not alter the rule.
Playing a PS5 version obtained from that disc
Some games offer a PS5 version to owners of the PS4 edition. When the offer is claimed using a physical PS4 copy, the PS4 disc is still required for every play session. The downloaded PS5 application is not converted into a standalone digital purchase.

Physical PS5 editions
A PS5-native physical release is a separate edition with its own packaging and license terms. The explicit Sony each-time wording cited above concerns PS4 discs on PS5, so do not assume a universal rule for every PS5 title from that sentence alone. For a PS5 disc edition, follow the edition’s current game and console requirements.
Does a PS4-disc upgrade remove the need for the original disc?
No. The upgrade changes which application you download, not how Sony verifies the license. A PS4 disc used to obtain a PS5 upgrade must still be inserted whenever you launch the upgraded game.

What can vary by game
- The upgrade may be free, paid, or available only during a stated time window.
- Internet access is required to obtain the upgrade files.
- The country or region of the PS4 disc must match the country or region of the PlayStation account for the upgrade offer to appear.
- The game’s hub can present separate PS4 and PS5 versions, so confirm which application you are launching.
Sony-named examples
Sony’s PlayStation ecosystem explainer used the PS4 editions of Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Sackboy: A Big Adventure to illustrate this process. Owners of those physical PS4 editions were told to insert the disc first to see the PS5-version offer. Those examples explain the mechanism; they are not a current promise that every physical listing has the same price or eligibility in October 2026. Check the offer shown in the game’s current hub.
How do I claim and launch a PS4-to-PS5 upgrade from a disc?
Have the PS4 disc, a PS5 with a compatible disc drive, an internet connection, and a PlayStation account whose country or region matches the disc. Then use the game’s current upgrade flow.
- Insert the PS4 game disc into the PS5 and wait for the console to recognize the edition.
- Open the game tile or the game’s hub and look for the PS5 upgrade or version-selection option.
- Review the displayed price and eligibility. Do not assume that an upgrade is free because another title offered a free upgrade.
- Select the PS5 version and download it. Keep the console connected to the internet while the entitlement and files are obtained.
- After installation, use the version selector in the game hub or Game Library to choose the PS5 application when both versions are installed.
- Leave the original PS4 disc in the drive whenever you play the upgraded PS5 version.
If no upgrade appears, first check the disc’s region against the account region and verify that the title still offers an upgrade. A disc can be a valid way to play the PS4 version while being ineligible for a particular regional or time-limited PS5 offer.

Can a PS5 Digital Edition play PS4 discs?
Not by itself. A drive-less PS5 has no optical reader, so it cannot read a PS4 game disc or use that disc as a license check.

Sony documents an add-on disc drive for the CFI-2000 and CFI-7000 model groups. Initial setup requires an internet connection to pair the drive with the PS5 console. Check the exact CFI model printed on the console before buying an accessory; the drive is not a universal solution for every earlier Digital Edition model.
If your console is outside those supported model groups, adding storage or reinstalling game data will not make it read discs. Your practical options are a compatible console with a drive or a separately purchased digital edition, when one is available.
How compatible are PS4 discs with PS5?
Compatibility and licensing are separate questions. A disc can be a valid physical license but still belong to a PS4-only title that PS5 does not support.
The broad rule
Sony’s current backward-compatibility support information describes the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games as playable on PS5. Sony’s 2020 PS5 launch FAQ gave the historical figure “more than 99% of the 4,000+ PS4 games.” That percentage is a published 2020 figure, not a newly measured October 2026 rate.

PS4-only exceptions Sony lists
The current support page lists these PS4-only exceptions:

Sony warns that the exception list can change. Check the live backward-compatibility page before buying a particular disc or relying on an older compatibility article.
PS3 discs are a different case
PS5 does not support PS3 game discs. That includes the unusual older scenario in which a PS3 disc was used to obtain a PS4 digital upgrade; the PS5 cannot use the PS3 disc as a supported game disc.

A padlock does not prove that a missing disc is the problem. For a digital game, it more often indicates that the console cannot currently confirm the account or service license.

- Check whether the game came through a subscription and whether that subscription is still active and eligible for the title.
- Review Console Sharing and Offline Play settings if the game was purchased on another account or another console is designated for sharing.
- Use Sony’s current license-troubleshooting process to refresh the entitlement.
- If the game originated from a disc, insert the correct disc and confirm that the PS5 model has a working, compatible drive.
These checks address access authorization; they do not convert a disc-based copy into a digital license.

What should I check before buying a physical PlayStation game?
Use this checklist to avoid buying a disc that your hardware or account cannot use:
- Confirm whether the package is the PS4 or PS5 edition.
- Confirm that your PS5 has a disc drive, or that its CFI-2000 or CFI-7000 model group supports Sony’s add-on drive.
- Check the current backward-compatibility status if you are buying a PS4 game for PS5.
- Assume that a disc-based copy will require the disc on every launch, including after installation and after a PS5 upgrade.
- For an upgrade, verify the disc region matches your PlayStation account region and inspect the game hub for the current offer and price.
- Do not treat a game’s installed files, a download code, or a similarly named digital listing as proof that the physical disc will be unnecessary.
The safest way to answer “Do I need the disc?” is therefore to identify the license path first: physical PS4 copy, disc-based upgrade, separate digital purchase, or digital upgrade. That distinction remains valid even when the same title appears in several editions.

Does deleting the installed game data change the disc requirement?
