For most people with a supported, fully updated Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC, you do not need to buy a separate antivirus program. Microsoft Defender Antivirus is built into Windows, monitors files and processes in real time, and works with Windows Security features such as SmartScreen. macOS and Android also include built-in antivirus protection. Your computer is not automatically safe, however: updates, account security, careful downloads and browser habits still matter.

Consider a reputable third-party product only when you use a legacy or poorly maintained system, need an enterprise security control, or have a specific feature requirement that the built-in tools do not meet. Do not run two products with real-time protection at the same time.

What is the difference between antivirus and anti-malware?

Antivirus originally referred to software that detected and removed computer viruses. Anti-malware is the broader term: it includes defenses against viruses, trojans, spyware, ransomware, unwanted applications and other hostile software. Modern products usually combine both roles, so “antivirus” and “anti-malware” are often used interchangeably.

The important distinction is not the label on the box but the controls a product provides. Effective protection can include real-time file and process monitoring, behavior detection, cloud-assisted reputation checks, malicious-site blocking, potentially unwanted application (PUA) controls and recovery tools. A product that only performs an occasional manual scan is not equivalent to an always-on security layer.

Is Windows Defender enough for a personal Windows PC?

Usually, yes. Microsoft Defender Antivirus comes built into Windows 10 and Windows 11, provides real-time protection and is managed through the Windows Security app. Microsoft says Defender turns itself back on when another antivirus product is removed; leaving the device with no active protection can expose it to malware.

Built-in protection is a sensible baseline when all of the following are true:

  • Your Windows edition is still supported and receives security updates.
  • Windows Security shows that virus and threat protection is active.
  • Windows, your browser and installed applications are kept current.
  • You download software from reputable sources and treat unexpected attachments and links cautiously.
  • SmartScreen and, where available on your edition, Smart App Control remain enabled.

Defender is not a promise that every attack will be blocked. A compromised account, a convincing phishing message, a malicious browser extension or an unpatched application can still cause harm without exploiting an antivirus gap. Use the built-in protection as one layer in a broader security routine.

How do you check and configure built-in Windows protection?

You can verify the important settings in a few minutes without installing anything.

  1. Open Start, type Windows Security, and open the app.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection. Confirm that real-time protection and protection updates are active. If Windows reports that another security provider is managing protection, identify that provider before changing settings.
  3. Open Virus & threat protection updates and choose Check for updates. Current signatures and the latest detection engine improve the chance of recognizing new threats.
  4. In App & browser control, review Microsoft Defender SmartScreen settings for apps, files and potentially dangerous websites. Leave the warnings enabled unless you have a documented administrative reason not to.
  5. Install pending updates under Settings > Windows Update, then restart when Windows requests it. Update browsers and other software from their own built-in update screens.

Do not disable Defender merely to make a warning disappear. Microsoft warns that turning it off without another working security product leaves the computer vulnerable. If a legitimate application is blocked, check its publisher and obtain a current installer from the publisher’s trusted site rather than disabling protection globally.

Which Windows scan should you run?

Windows Security offers quick, full, custom and Microsoft Defender Offline scans. Choose according to the question you are trying to answer rather than running the longest scan every time.

Scan Best use What to expect
Quick scan Routine check when the PC appears normal Checks common locations where threats are often found and finishes faster than a full scan.
Full scan Suspected infection or a comprehensive scheduled check Examines files and running areas across the computer; completion time depends on storage size and file count.
Custom scan A particular folder, drive or downloaded file Lets you target a location instead of scanning the entire system.
Microsoft Defender Offline Persistent malware that may hide while Windows is running Restarts the PC and scans outside the normal Windows environment, making it harder for some threats to conceal themselves.

To start one, open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options, select the scan type and choose Scan now. Save open work first. An offline scan will restart the computer, so schedule it when you can allow the interruption. If a full or offline scan finds a threat, follow the recommended quarantine or removal action and scan again after restarting.

Can you run two antivirus programs at once?

Do not stack two products that both provide real-time antivirus protection. Microsoft notes that using more than one real-time security product can affect performance. The UK National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) likewise says the security benefit is minimal and that products can conflict, causing instability.

Windows normally places a third-party antivirus in charge of real-time protection and reduces Defender to a limited periodic-scanning role, or disables its real-time component. Check the status shown in Windows Security rather than assuming both products are active. A separate, on-demand scanner can be useful for a second opinion if it does not install a competing always-on driver, but read its settings carefully.

When is third-party antivirus worth considering?

Most well-maintained personal computers do not need another real-time antivirus engine. A third-party product can be reasonable in narrower circumstances:

Legacy or unsupported systems

A computer that no longer receives operating-system security updates has a fundamental weakness that Defender cannot repair. If replacing or upgrading the device is impossible, a reputable product with current support may add a layer of detection, but it does not make an unsupported operating system equivalent to a supported one.

Unmanaged or poorly maintained devices

Systems that cannot be patched promptly, have inconsistent configuration or are used by many people may need centrally managed controls. The added product should be selected as part of a documented maintenance plan, not as a substitute for updates and least-privilege settings.

Business and regulated environments

Organizations may require centralized reporting, policy enforcement, incident response integration, application allow-listing or compatibility with enterprise content-scanning services. UK government guidance says the incremental benefit of extra antivirus is limited when devices are well maintained, applications are allow-listed and content is already scanned by enterprise services. The decision should follow the organization’s risk assessment and compliance requirements.

Specific features or support needs

Some users need a feature set that is not enabled in their edition of Windows, such as a particular management console, cross-platform policy, specialized web filtering or vendor support. Compare the actual feature and support requirement rather than buying a package solely because it advertises a higher detection percentage.

For Windows, NCSC guidance recommends choosing a reputable product that integrates with the Anti-Malware Scan Interface (AMSI). Verify that the product supports your exact Windows version, receives updates, explains what data it collects and can coexist with your existing security controls.

Do Macs and Android devices need antivirus?

macOS and Android include built-in antivirus capabilities, and the NCSC says Windows, macOS and Android provide built-in AV products by default. That makes a separately purchased antivirus app optional for many people, not unnecessary security hygiene.

Keep macOS or Android updated, install applications through trusted stores or publishers, review permission requests and remove software you no longer use. On any platform, phishing, malicious downloads, unsafe extensions, exposed credentials and compromised online accounts can bypass the protections aimed at malware files. A platform’s reputation does not remove the need for careful account and application management.

How should you compare a third-party security product?

If you have a documented reason to add one, compare products on the controls that affect your situation. A low introductory price or a long list of features does not show that a product will work well on your computer.

Comparison area Questions to ask
Operating-system support Does it support your exact Windows, macOS or Android version, and for how long?
Detection and response Does it provide real-time, behavioral and cloud-assisted protection, plus quarantine and recovery options?
Web, email and PUA controls Can it block malicious sites, suspicious downloads, dangerous attachments and potentially unwanted applications without disrupting legitimate work?
Ransomware and offline capability Does it offer safeguards for important folders and a scan method that can operate outside the normal operating system?
Performance and false positives How much background activity does it add, and how can you restore a legitimate file that is incorrectly blocked?
Privacy and account requirements What information is collected, where is it processed, and is an online account mandatory?
Price after a trial What is the recurring cost when the introductory period ends, and what happens if you do not renew?
Compatibility Will it conflict with device-management, backup, VPN, accessibility or other security software already installed?

For a Windows installation, check whether the product uses AMSI and whether Windows Security clearly reports which provider owns real-time protection. Remove an old antivirus cleanly before installing a replacement, and restart when its uninstaller requests it.

What do independent antivirus test results actually tell you?

Independent testing is useful evidence about a particular product, operating system and test period; it is not a permanent guarantee. AV-TEST evaluated 17 home-user security products on Windows 11 during September and October 2024. Its certificate for Microsoft Defender Antivirus Consumer’s monitored-malware protection is dated 1 March 2025.

Those details matter because products, signatures, operating-system builds and threat samples change. When reading a test, check the edition tested, the month of testing, the protection and performance categories, and whether the result covers the version you plan to install. Do not turn one certificate or ranking into a claim that a product will stop every future attack.

What should you do if you suspect malware?

Act methodically instead of installing several scanners at once.

  1. Disconnect the computer from networks if you suspect active malicious behavior, especially unexplained account activity or rapid file changes.
  2. Save important work, then open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options and run a full scan. Use Microsoft Defender Offline if the threat persists or appears to hide during normal operation.
  3. Quarantine or remove detections as Windows recommends. Do not restore a file merely because an application stops working; verify the publisher and obtain a clean, current installer.
  4. Install pending operating-system, browser and application updates, then restart and run a follow-up scan.
  5. From a known-clean device, change passwords for important accounts and enable multifactor authentication where available. Review account sessions and revoke unfamiliar access.
  6. If symptoms continue, seek qualified incident-response or technical support. Repeated pop-ups, disabled security settings, unexplained administrator accounts or encrypted files can indicate a problem that needs more than a routine scan.

What is the practical decision for your computer?

Use this checklist to make the choice without relying on marketing claims:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Supported, updated personal Windows PC: keep Defender, SmartScreen and updates enabled; no second real-time antivirus is normally needed.
  • Supported Mac or Android device: keep the platform’s built-in protection and updates active, and control apps, permissions and accounts carefully.
  • Legacy or unmaintained computer: prioritize replacement or upgrade. If that cannot happen, evaluate a reputable, currently supported product as risk reduction rather than a complete fix.
  • Business or regulated fleet: follow the organization’s security architecture, including management, allow-listing, content scanning and reporting requirements.
  • Specific feature requirement: compare the exact control, privacy terms, compatibility and recurring cost, then install only one product with real-time protection.

Built-in antivirus is now a capable baseline, but it works best when paired with prompt patching, trusted software sources, strong account security and sensible user decisions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does antivirus protect me from phishing emails?

Antivirus may block a malicious attachment or warn about a dangerous website, but it cannot reliably determine whether you should trust a message or surrender your credentials. Verify the sender through a separate channel, avoid signing in through unexpected links and use multifactor authentication on important accounts.

Will a security program slow down my computer?

Real-time scanning uses some CPU, memory and disk activity, and a full scan can be noticeable on older hardware. Two simultaneous real-time products are more likely to create conflicts and extra overhead, which is why one active engine is the safer configuration.

Why does Windows Security say another antivirus provider is active?

Windows detected a registered security product that has taken responsibility for real-time protection. Open that product’s settings and Windows Security to confirm its update status; remove an obsolete product with its official uninstaller before relying on Defender again.

Is an offline computer safe without antivirus?

Being disconnected reduces exposure to internet threats but does not eliminate malware delivered by USB drives, shared files, installers or previously compromised media. Keep the operating system protected and updated, and scan removable storage before opening files.
