No. Standard Ray-Ban Meta glasses work without an in-lens screen. Their open-ear speakers handle music, calls and spoken Meta AI responses, while camera-equipped versions send photos, video and camera-based answers through audio and a connected phone workflow. Ray-Ban Meta Audio removes the camera as well.
A display is only necessary if you want messages, maps, translation captions, photo previews or other visual information in your field of view. That is the job of the separate Meta Ray-Ban Display model, not the displayless Ray-Ban Meta range.
Do Ray-Ban Meta glasses have a screen?
The standard Ray-Ban Meta camera-and-audio glasses have no display in either lens. Meta describes them as part of a “display-less” glasses category: they provide sound, camera capture and voice interaction without placing text or graphics over your vision.

How do displayless Ray-Ban Meta glasses work?
Open-ear audio supplies the feedback
Small speakers built into the temples play music, podcasts, audiobooks, calls and spoken responses from Meta AI. Because the speakers are open-ear, you can continue hearing nearby traffic, people and other environmental sound instead of blocking your ears with earbuds.
Voice control starts with “Hey Meta.” The temple touchpad handles playback and volume, and the glasses reconnect over Bluetooth when they are opened again. Playback is therefore an audio-and-phone experience rather than something you view through the lens.
The camera model uses audio plus a phone workflow
Camera-equipped Ray-Ban Meta glasses capture photos and video, support livestreaming and let Meta AI answer questions about what the camera sees. The result is delivered through spoken audio and the connected phone workflow; there is no visual overlay showing the answer or a camera preview in the lens.

Ray-Ban Meta Audio removes the camera
Ray-Ban Meta Audio is intended for listening, calls and voice interaction. Ray-Ban’s FAQ states that it does not have a camera, so camera capture, livestreaming and camera troubleshooting do not apply to this version.

What can’t Ray-Ban Meta do without a display?
Displayless glasses cannot put text or graphics directly in front of your eyes. In practical terms, they cannot show:
- Turn-by-turn maps or a route line in the lens.
- Translation captions that you read while looking at the world.
- Message previews, notifications or other written overlays.
- A live camera frame for composing a shot.
- Photo previews or visual AI answers.
- Any other heads-up display element such as icons, menus or status cards.
You can still use the phone associated with the glasses for visual tasks. For example, a captured photo can be reviewed on the phone, and a spoken AI answer can be accompanied by whatever information the connected app presents there. The glasses themselves remain screen-free.
What does Meta Ray-Ban Display add?
Meta Ray-Ban Display is the option for people who specifically want information in the lens. Meta says it provides a full-color, high-resolution display for checking messages, previewing photos, seeing translations and getting help from Meta AI.
Ray-Ban’s 2026 catalog specifies a 600 × 600-pixel display and a starting price of $799. The display is positioned off to the side so short interactions do not obstruct normal vision. It is designed for brief glances rather than replacing a phone or filling the entire lens with graphics.
The distinction is therefore functional, not merely cosmetic: displayless models speak information to you, while the display model can present selected information visually as well.

Is audio-only smart eyewear enough for everyday use?
Audio-only glasses are a good fit when your main goal is to keep your phone in your pocket while listening or talking. They can be useful for:
- Listening to music, podcasts and audiobooks while retaining awareness of your surroundings.
- Taking calls without inserting earbuds.
- Asking voice questions and hearing spoken Meta AI responses.
- Capturing a moment hands-free if you choose the camera-equipped version.
They are a poor fit if your use case depends on reading. A person who wants a route arrow, a written translation, a message preview or a framing guide must look at a phone or choose a model with a display.
Should you choose Audio or the camera-equipped Ray-Ban Meta?
Choose Ray-Ban Meta Audio when privacy and simplicity matter most
Audio is the cleaner choice when you want speakers, calls and voice interaction but do not want a camera on your face. It removes the possibility of taking photos, recording video or livestreaming from the glasses and avoids camera-specific setup and troubleshooting.

Choose camera-and-audio Ray-Ban Meta when capture is central
The camera version makes sense for hands-free photography, video, livestreaming or questions about something in front of you. Remember that the answer is spoken and the captured media follows a phone-based workflow; the lens still will not show a preview or text.
Choose Meta Ray-Ban Display when visual information is the requirement
If your deciding feature is seeing messages, translations, photo previews or other short visual prompts without looking down, only the display model in this comparison addresses that need. Buying a displayless model and expecting a software update to create an in-lens screen would be a hardware mismatch.
Do the glasses depend on a phone?
Bluetooth handles the connection for playback and reconnects when the glasses reopen. Camera capture, livestreaming and camera-based AI use the connected phone workflow described by Meta and Ray-Ban, so the glasses should be treated as part of a phone-and-app system rather than a completely independent computer.

The two displayless categories have different privacy profiles. Ray-Ban Meta Audio has no camera, while the camera-equipped model can take photos, record video and livestream. That distinction matters in workplaces, schools, healthcare settings and any place where recording is restricted.

Use the camera model with the same courtesy and policies you would apply to a phone camera. Tell people when recording is relevant, follow venue rules and avoid assuming that an audio-only appearance means no recording capability.

How do you set up and use displayless glasses?

- Test audio first. Play a short track or make a test call, then adjust volume from the temple touchpad.
- Try voice control. Say “Hey Meta” and make a simple request. Spoken responses confirm that the microphone, speakers and assistant connection are working.
- For camera models, test capture privately. Take a photo or short video, confirm that it reaches the connected phone workflow and review the venue’s recording rules before using the camera around others.
- For Audio, skip camera steps. The Audio model has no camera, so use it for listening, calls and voice interaction only.
What should you check if the glasses seem not to work?
- No sound: Check Bluetooth connection, phone media output, volume and whether the glasses are open and powered.
- Voice command fails: Confirm the wake phrase, microphone permissions and the assistant’s availability in your country or account.
- Camera feature is missing: Confirm that you own a camera-equipped model. Ray-Ban Meta Audio cannot take photos or video.
- You expected text in the lens: Nothing is broken if a standard Ray-Ban Meta model shows no text. It is displayless by design; use the phone for visual information or select Meta Ray-Ban Display.
- Connection drops after storage: Reopen the glasses so Bluetooth can attempt its normal reconnection, then check the phone’s Bluetooth and companion-app status.

Start with the information channel you prefer. If hearing is enough, Audio covers listening, calls and voice interaction without a camera. If you also want hands-free capture or camera-aware AI, choose the camera-and-audio Ray-Ban Meta line. If you need to read information without looking at a phone, choose the display model instead.

Can I add a display to standard Ray-Ban Meta glasses later?

Will displayless glasses read my phone messages aloud?
