Most Dell gaming monitors do not have built-in speakers. Dell Technologies identifies one documented exception: the Alienware 55 OLED Monitor AW5520QF. On other Dell Gaming and Alienware displays, HDMI, DisplayPort, or USB-C can carry your computer’s audio signal, but you still need a headset or external speakers connected to an available headphone or audio-out jack—or connected directly to the computer. Windows may list the monitor as a playback device even when the monitor contains no speakers, so that listing alone does not prove the display can produce sound.
What is the direct answer about speakers in Dell gaming monitors?
Dell’s portfolio rule is straightforward: Dell Gaming and Alienware monitors, with the exception of the Alienware 55 OLED Monitor AW5520QF, do not include built-in speakers. Dell’s support guidance says a headset or external speaker is required for audio from those displays.
That distinction explains a common setup problem. A video cable can deliver both picture and an audio signal to the monitor, and Windows can show the monitor as an output device, but the display may have no physical speaker hardware to turn that signal into sound. You must provide the final listening device yourself.
Which Dell gaming monitor has built-in speakers?
Alienware 55 OLED Monitor AW5520QF
The AW5520QF is the major exception documented by Dell. It has integrated speakers, so it can produce sound without a separate headset or desktop speaker set. If built-in audio is a deciding requirement, verify that the exact model you are buying is AW5520QF rather than assuming every Alienware gaming display has the same feature.

Every other model requires an accessory
For the rest of the Dell Gaming and Alienware monitor range covered by Dell’s statement, plan on using a headset or external speakers. Product family names, screen size, resolution, refresh rate, and gaming features do not establish that speakers are present; the model’s specifications and User Guide are the authoritative checks.
Why does Windows show my Dell monitor as an audio device when there is no sound?
Windows can recognize the audio channel in an HDMI, DisplayPort, or USB-C connection and create a monitor playback entry even when the monitor has no speakers. Dell explicitly warns that there may be “no sound from the monitor since it does NOT have speakers.” The operating system is reporting a valid digital destination, not confirming that the display contains speaker drivers.
This is why selecting the monitor in Windows may appear to work while the room remains silent. The signal reaches the display, but it needs to leave through a headphone or audio-output jack to an accessory, or it must be routed directly from the computer to a headset or speaker system.
How does audio pass through a Dell gaming monitor?
HDMI, DisplayPort, and USB-C can carry the computer’s audio signal along with video when those interfaces are available and supported by the connected equipment. The monitor then acts as part of the signal path. It does not automatically become a sound source unless it is the AW5520QF or another model whose documentation specifically lists speakers.
| Connection or hardware | What it does | What you still need |
|---|---|---|
| HDMI | Carries video and can carry the computer’s audio signal to the monitor. | A headset or external speakers if the monitor has no built-in speakers. |
| DisplayPort | Carries video and can carry the computer’s audio signal to the monitor. | A headset or external speakers if the monitor has no built-in speakers. |
| USB-C | Can carry the computer’s audio signal when the monitor and connection support it. | A headset or external speakers if the monitor has no built-in speakers. |
| Monitor headphone or audio-out jack | Provides a place to take the audio signal out of the display. | The connected headset or powered external speaker system. |
| AW5520QF integrated speakers | Converts the incoming signal into sound inside the monitor. | No separate listening device is required for ordinary playback. |
How do I connect a headset or speakers to a Dell gaming monitor?
Use the monitor as an audio pass-through only when its ports and your preferred cable support that arrangement. The following sequence avoids the most common assumption—that an on-screen or Windows audio device means the monitor itself contains speakers.

- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Identify the exact monitor model. Read the label on the display or its documentation, then open the corresponding Dell User Guide. Do not rely on the name of the product family alone.
- Check the rear and side I/O panel. Look for a headphone-out, audio-out, or line-out jack. Port names and combinations differ by model; some displays provide separate headset and speaker outputs.
- Connect the video and audio-capable cable. Use HDMI, DisplayPort, or USB-C as supported by your computer and monitor. These connections can transport the computer’s audio signal to the display.
- Attach the listening device. Plug a headset into the headphone jack, or connect external speakers to the appropriate audio-out or line-out jack when the model provides one. If there is no suitable monitor jack, connect the accessory directly to the computer instead.
- Select the intended Windows playback device. Choose the monitor output when the accessory is connected to the monitor, or choose the computer’s audio output when the accessory is plugged into the computer. The label alone does not tell you whether speakers are physically installed.
- Test playback at a low volume first. Confirm that the headset or external speakers are powered, connected securely, and not muted before raising the volume.
The computer-direct route is often the simplest fallback. It bypasses the monitor’s audio jack and uses the computer’s own headphone or speaker connection, while the monitor continues to handle video.
Which ports should I check on my exact Dell model?
Port availability is model-specific, so inspect the User Guide before buying a cable or accessory. Dell’s AW2518HF specification, for example, lists both an audio line-out jack and a headphone-out jack. That example demonstrates why “Dell gaming monitor” is not enough information to predict the connectors on your particular display.
Headphone-out
A headphone-out jack is the relevant connection for a headset and may also be used by compatible external audio equipment. Follow the labeling and instructions in the model’s guide rather than assuming every 3.5-mm jack has the same function.
Audio line-out
A line-out jack is intended to send the monitor’s audio signal to external audio equipment when provided. It does not turn the monitor into a speaker; the connected equipment remains responsible for producing sound.
No audio jack
If the User Guide does not list a usable audio output, connect the headset or speakers to the computer. The video connection can remain attached to the monitor while audio follows a separate path.

Why is there no sound from my Dell gaming monitor?
First determine whether the silence is expected because the model has no speakers. Then isolate the signal path, the selected Windows output, and the physical accessory.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe monitor is a no-speaker model
Most Dell Gaming and Alienware monitors fall into this category. No amount of changing Windows volume settings will make sound emerge from a display that has no speaker hardware; use a headset or external speakers.
The wrong playback route is selected
Windows may offer both the monitor output and the computer’s own audio outputs. Select the route that matches where your headset or speakers are physically plugged in. A monitor entry is useful when an accessory is attached to the monitor, but it is not useful as a stand-alone speaker destination on a no-speaker model.
The monitor jack is not present or is being misidentified
Recheck the exact model’s User Guide and the labels beside the ports. The AW2518HF, for instance, documents separate line-out and headphone-out connections, while another model may provide a different arrangement or none at all.
The external device is not ready
Check the headset plug, speaker power, mute controls, and cable seating. If the accessory works when connected directly to the computer but not through the monitor, use the computer connection or continue checking the monitor’s documented audio path.

The cable does not carry the expected signal
HDMI, DisplayPort, and USB-C can carry audio, but the specific monitor, computer port, adapter, and cable must support the intended connection. If Windows does not expose a suitable output, test the connection without an adapter where possible and consult the monitor and computer documentation.
Should I use a headset, external speakers, or built-in audio?
The practical choice depends on whether you want private listening, shared room audio, or no separate accessory. Only the AW5520QF supplies the built-in option documented by Dell.
| Audio approach | Best fit | Advantages | Limitations |
|---|---|---|---|
| AW5520QF built-in speakers | Users who want sound without an additional device. | No separate headset or speaker connection is required. | Available only on the documented exception, not across the Dell gaming range. |
| Headset | Private gaming, calls, or listening when others should not hear the game. | Personal audio and a direct connection through the monitor or computer when supported. | Must be worn and connected to the correct output. |
| External speakers | Shared listening at a desk or in a room. | Suitable when more than one person needs to hear the computer. | Requires desk space, power where applicable, and a compatible audio connection. |
For a no-speaker display, the accessory decision is independent of picture quality. Choose the listening device first, then verify whether the monitor can serve as its connection point or whether the computer should be used instead.
Can Dell office soundbars be mounted on gaming monitor stands?
Dell states that its soundbars designed for office monitors cannot be installed on Dell Gaming monitor stands. If you want a soundbar-style setup, check the stand and mounting compatibility in the specific product documentation rather than assuming that a Dell-branded office accessory will attach to a gaming display.

- Exact model: Record the full model number, including any suffix, and consult its Dell User Guide.
- Speaker status: Confirm whether the model is the AW5520QF exception or one of the many models without built-in speakers.
- Available output: Check for headphone-out, audio-out, or line-out ports and note whether they are separate.
- Connection path: Decide whether HDMI, DisplayPort, or USB-C will carry audio to the monitor, or whether the accessory will connect directly to the computer.
- Listening goal: Pick a headset for private audio or external speakers for shared listening.
- Compatibility: Confirm cable, adapter, connector, and stand requirements before purchase; Dell’s office soundbars are not suitable for Dell Gaming monitor stands according to Dell’s support information.
This checklist prevents the most expensive mistake: buying an accessory or cable based on the monitor family name, then discovering that the exact model lacks the required jack or mounting support.

What is the most reliable way to troubleshoot monitor audio?
Work from the physical hardware toward Windows rather than starting with software menus. Confirm the model’s speaker capability, inspect its documented ports, connect the accessory, and only then select the matching playback device. If the monitor is not the AW5520QF and no headset or external speaker is attached, silence is the expected result—not evidence of a failed display.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a Windows playback entry confirm that my Dell monitor has speakers?
No. Windows can create an output entry for the audio channel delivered over HDMI, DisplayPort, or USB-C even when the monitor has no physical speakers. The model specification and User Guide are the proper confirmation.
Do I need a separate audio cable when using HDMI or DisplayPort?
Those interfaces can carry the computer’s audio signal as well as video, so a separate audio cable is not automatically required. You still need a headset or external speakers unless the display is the AW5520QF or another model whose documentation explicitly lists speakers.

Yes, but connect the speakers directly to the computer rather than to the monitor. The display can continue receiving video while the computer supplies the audio output.
Will a Dell office soundbar fit a Dell gaming monitor stand?
Dell says its office soundbars cannot be installed on Dell Gaming monitor stands. Check the mounting information for both products before attempting that arrangement.
