Yes—but the junior analyst job is being redesigned. Security teams still need early-career people to investigate alerts, validate what automated tools report, document evidence, check controls and learn the judgment required for incident response and security engineering. What is disappearing is the old version of the role: spending most of a shift clicking through identical alerts with little coaching.
Artificial intelligence (AI) is taking over more repetitive detection and triage. That makes hiring more selective, not pointless. The best entry-level roles now combine supervised investigations, safe AI use, clear feedback and a route into incident response, engineering, governance, threat intelligence or architecture. Whether a particular job is a good first step depends less on its “junior” label than on the work and learning system behind it.
What do the latest numbers say about junior cybersecurity work?
The strongest current evidence is from the United Kingdom, while the skills-shortage estimate is global. The figures also come from studies with different fieldwork periods, so they should not be read as one single time series.
| Measure | Finding | What it indicates |
|---|---|---|
| UK cyber workforce | Approximately 145,900 people in 2026 | A large, continuing professional workforce rather than a sector that has stopped hiring |
| UK core cyber postings | Average postings rose 7% compared with 2024 (2026 UK Department for Science, Innovation and Technology report) | Demand remains, even as the mix of jobs changes |
| UK businesses using AI at work | 70% reported staff using AI in day-to-day work in 2026, up from 53% the previous year | AI capability is becoming a normal part of security operations |
| Postings asking for under one year of experience | 17% in 2024, down from 25% in 2022 (2025 UK labour-market study) | Direct entry through a traditional “watch the queue” role is narrower |
| Postings asking for two to six years | 63% in the 2025 labour-market study; 64% in 2025 in the UK Digital and Technologies Jobs Plan | Employers are often advertising for people who can contribute sooner |
| Cybersecurity graduates | 7,950 UK graduates in 2023/24 | The education pipeline is substantial, increasing competition for the most basic roles |
| Global workforce gap | Nearly 4 million cybersecurity professionals, World Economic Forum framework, 2024 | Worldwide demand and capability gaps remain significant |
The 2025 UK study records employers expecting AI to automate operational work such as threat detection. Its participants also warned that removing routine junior tasks can remove the usual route to experienced positions. That is an informed employer perception, not proof that AI will eliminate junior jobs. The 2026 report’s qualitative sample was not representative, so its description of AI as transformative should be treated as an expectation about direction, not a precise forecast of headcount.

In other words, fewer postings aimed at people with no experience do not mean teams have no use for beginners. They mean a beginner is increasingly expected to arrive with evidence of learning and to handle more than an alert queue.
Why do security teams still need junior analysts?
Automation can classify and enrich events, but a functioning security program still needs people to test assumptions, gather context and make accountable decisions. Junior analysts are useful when their work is bounded by access controls, playbooks and review.
They add supervised investigation capacity
Even a highly automated security operations centre (SOC) produces cases that need a human to connect identity, endpoint, network and business context. An early-career analyst can assemble a timeline, verify whether a user or device was expected to behave that way, preserve relevant evidence and escalate with a concise explanation. Senior staff then spend less time on routine evidence collection and more time on containment and complex judgment.
They perform the checks automation cannot own
Detection systems can be wrong, incomplete or trained on yesterday’s patterns. A junior analyst can compare a finding with asset ownership, maintenance windows, identity records and vulnerability data; challenge an implausible result; and record why a case was closed or escalated. Those habits are a control against both false positives and confident automation errors.
They protect the future talent pipeline
Most senior responders, detection engineers and security architects learned by handling progressively harder cases. If every routine task is automated without replacing that learning with supervised investigations, rotations or lab work, organizations may face a shortage of experienced people later. UK cyber firms are already participating in school talks, workshops and work placements, reflecting the need to build that pipeline deliberately.
They cover work outside the SOC queue
Entry-level staff can support control testing, access reviews, phishing investigations, vulnerability validation, threat-hunting preparation, asset inventories, security documentation and incident-report production. These assignments expose a learner to how security decisions affect real systems and users, rather than teaching only one vendor’s alert interface.

Are SOC analyst jobs disappearing because of AI?
No. The repetitive portion of SOC work is shrinking, while investigation, validation and communication are becoming more important. The risk is not that every junior job vanishes; it is that organizations automate the only tasks juniors were allowed to do and fail to create an alternative learning path.

Tasks most likely to be automated or accelerated
- Deduplicating and prioritizing large volumes of alerts.
- Adding reputation, geolocation, vulnerability and identity context to an event.
- Running standard enrichment queries and suggesting a playbook.
- Drafting an initial case summary or incident timeline.
- Closing clearly benign events that meet an approved rule.
Tasks that still need accountable judgment
- Deciding whether evidence is sufficient to escalate or contain.
- Checking whether an AI-generated explanation is supported by logs.
- Recognizing an unusual business context that a model does not know.
- Choosing what evidence to preserve and how to explain uncertainty.
- Communicating impact and next actions to system owners, executives or legal teams.
A safe operating model treats AI output as a lead, not as authorization. Analysts should be able to show the query, source records, decision and reviewer for consequential actions. That practice is valuable at any career level and gives a junior person a concrete way to demonstrate competence.
What should a modern junior analyst job include?
Read the work design, not just the title. A credible first role makes learning visible, limits blast radius and gives you progressively harder decisions.
Supervised cases instead of an isolated queue
Look for named reviewers, case-quality checks and regular debriefs. You should be able to describe how an alert moves from intake to triage, escalation, containment support and closure, and who signs off each stage.
Access to real telemetry with least privilege
Useful exposure might include a read-only SIEM view, endpoint investigation, identity logs, cloud audit data and ticket history. Production access should be scoped and audited; “hands-on” should not mean unrestricted administrator rights.
Recommended Free Tools
Training on the organization’s AI tools
Ask which tools are approved, what data may be sent to them, how prompts and outputs are logged, and how an analyst is expected to verify a recommendation. An employer that cannot answer those questions may be experimenting without a dependable control framework.

A documented progression route
The next step could be incident response, detection or security engineering, governance and risk, threat intelligence, digital forensics or architecture. Progression does not have to be a promotion on a fixed timetable, but the competencies, rotations and evidence required should be explicit.
Feedback and learning time
Training budgets matter less than protected time to use them. Find out whether analysts receive case reviews, tabletop exercises, lab time, certification support or employer-funded courses, and whether shift patterns allow attendance.
What skills do junior security analysts need now?
You do not need to know every security product. You do need a foundation that lets you test evidence and explain a decision.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Technical foundations
- Networking basics: DNS, HTTP, TLS, routing, common ports and authentication flows.
- Operating-system fundamentals for Windows and Linux, including processes, services, permissions and logs.
- Identity concepts such as multifactor authentication, privilege, service accounts and session abuse.
- Log analysis and query skills in the platform used by the employer, plus basic scripting for repeatable checks.
- Incident-handling principles: scope, evidence preservation, containment, eradication, recovery and lessons learned.
AI and automation literacy
- Write a precise question or query and identify the data it depends on.
- Check model output against primary logs rather than accepting a plausible narrative.
- Recognize hallucinated commands, unsupported attribution and missing context.
- Protect secrets, personal data and sensitive incident details when using an approved tool.
- Document what the tool suggested, what you verified and what you decided.
Human skills
Clear writing, calm escalation, curiosity and disciplined note-taking often distinguish a reliable analyst from a fast but careless one. Hiring managers need people who can explain technical risk to a system owner and ask a useful question when a playbook does not fit.
How can you get cybersecurity experience when every job asks for experience?
Build evidence that resembles the work, then target routes designed to develop beginners rather than disguising a mid-level vacancy as “junior.”
- Create two or three investigation write-ups. Use a legal home lab or public training environment. Show the alert, assumptions, queries, evidence, alternative explanations, decision and lessons learned. Remove real secrets and personal data.
- Demonstrate a small automation safely. For example, parse sample authentication logs, flag an impossible-travel pattern and explain where the method can produce false positives. Include tests and limitations, not just code.
- Practice concise escalation. Write a one-page incident update for a nontechnical manager: what happened, affected assets, confidence, immediate action, business impact and next checkpoint.
- Use structured entry routes. Consider apprenticeships, work-experience placements, T Level placements, undergraduate routes, internal transfers and supervised SOC analyst training. The UK Digital and Technologies Jobs Plan sets an ambition for around 200,000 genuine entry-level digital and technology jobs over ten years, including apprenticeships; that is a policy ambition, not a guarantee of 200,000 cyber vacancies.
- Question the employer about the first 90 days. Ask what cases you will handle, what access you receive, who reviews your work, how AI is governed and what capability is expected before you take independent shifts.
Certifications can organize study, but a certificate without demonstrated investigation and communication is weak evidence. A small, well-explained portfolio is often more informative than a long list of tools.

How should employers redesign junior analyst roles?
Teams that want future senior talent should automate drudgery while preserving deliberate practice.
Separate automation from learning objectives
For each automated task, define the judgment a learner still needs to acquire. If enrichment is automatic, let juniors compare the enrichment with raw evidence and explain exceptions. If a playbook closes a benign alert, sample those closures for review and teach the conditions that make the rule unsafe.
Use a tiered case model
Start with read-only triage and documentation. Add supervised investigation, then limited containment recommendations, before granting any independent authority. Record quality, reasoning and escalation—not merely tickets closed per hour.
Rotate beyond the SOC
Short assignments with identity, vulnerability management, governance, cloud security or incident response show how controls connect. They also reveal which path fits the analyst’s strengths and reduce dependence on one narrow queue.
Measure development and retention
Track time to competent investigation, review findings, progression and retention alongside operational metrics. A team that hires juniors only to maximize short-term throughput may optimize away the experience it will need later.

| Comparison point | Stronger signal | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| Task mix | Investigation, validation, documentation and varied cases | Nearly all time spent clearing identical alerts |

| AI fluency | Approved tools, data rules, logging and verification training | Pressure to paste sensitive data into unapproved tools |
| Experience threshold | Requirements match a learner and explain how gaps are taught | “Entry-level” title with an extensive mid-level checklist |
| Progression | Published competencies or rotations into response, engineering, GRC, intelligence or architecture | No examples of anyone progressing from the team |
| Work arrangement | Apprenticeship, placement, internal mobility or funded training | Training promised informally but absent from the plan |
What does the future of junior cybersecurity work look like?
Expect a smaller proportion of jobs devoted solely to first-line monitoring and a larger expectation that early-career analysts can move between tools, investigate exceptions and communicate uncertainty. The exact pace will vary by organization, regulation, data quality and the consequences of a wrong decision. A bank, a small manufacturer and a public-sector team will not automate the same tasks at the same speed.
The durable entry point is therefore not “a job AI cannot do.” It is a role in which you learn to use automation responsibly while developing security judgment that remains accountable to people and business context. Teams still need juniors because they need capacity now and experienced professionals later; they simply have less room for an apprenticeship made of unexamined repetition.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is cybersecurity still a good entry-level career in 2026?
It can be, provided you choose a role with supervised investigations and a progression plan rather than assuming any SOC title will provide training. Demand remains substantial, but competition is higher and employers increasingly expect evidence that you can learn quickly and verify automated findings.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Do I need a computer science degree to become a junior security analyst?
Not necessarily. Apprenticeships, placements, practical portfolios and internal transfers are recognized entry routes, and employers also value networking, systems, identity and communication skills. A degree can help, but it is one route among several.
Which cybersecurity specialty is safest from AI automation?
No specialty is immune, and tools will change every area. Work involving incident judgment, system design, governance, threat interpretation and communication is less reducible to repetitive pattern matching than a fixed alert queue, so building those capabilities improves resilience across specialties.
How can I tell whether an AI-generated security alert is trustworthy?
Trace the conclusion back to raw logs and independent context such as asset ownership, identity activity and change records. Check the time range, missing data and alternative explanations, then record the evidence and confidence before escalating or closing the case.
