Yes—some color eReaders can read library books and ebooks you already own, but compatibility depends on the device, the library service and title, and the file’s format and DRM. Newer Kobo models such as the Kobo Libra Colour and Kobo Clara Colour support built-in OverDrive; existing files may need a different route, especially when protected by Adobe or Kindle DRM.
What determines whether an ebook will work?
Check four things before choosing a device or trying a transfer: which library service and catalog you use, whether your exact eReader supports that service, what format the book is available in, and whether its DRM permits the intended transfer. A device’s support for EPUB, for example, does not mean it can open every DRM-protected EPUB.
- Library service and location: Your library must offer a compatible lending path. OverDrive says Kindle Books are available to borrow only from U.S. libraries and schools; that restriction is specific to Kindle lending, not a general statement about Kobo.
- Model and title: Built-in OverDrive is available on some newer Kobo eReaders, but not every Libby ebook syncs to Kobo. Library titles can also lack a downloadable file.
- Format: Kobo lists formats including EPUB, EPUB2/3, PDF, MOBI, TXT, HTML, RTF, CBZ, and CBR, with some model-specific caveats.
- DRM: DRM-free files can often be copied directly, while Adobe DRM files require Adobe Digital Editions (ADE). Kindle-protected purchases remain restricted to the Kindle ecosystem.
These are separate checks: a supported format can still fail to open if the file’s DRM or account authorization is incompatible.
Borrowing library ebooks on a color Kobo
Borrow and read on the eReader
Libby’s guidance identifies Kobo Libra Colour and Kobo Clara Colour among newer Kobo eReaders with built-in OverDrive. On a compatible model, you can browse, borrow, and read directly on the device. Alternatively, borrow in Libby and sync compatible ebooks to the Kobo over Wi-Fi. For syncing, use the same library card for OverDrive on the Kobo and for Libby.

Support is not universal: Libby says some ebooks will not sync to Kobo, and Libby audiobooks and magazines are not supported on Kobo. OverDrive availability can also depend on your local library. Check the specific title and your library’s service before relying on on-device borrowing.
Transfer a downloadable loan using a computer
Some library loans can be downloaded as EPUB or PDF and transferred with ADE. This route is useful for compatible older Kobo models as well as for readers whose loan is not delivered directly to the device.

- On your library’s OverDrive website, find the loan and choose the available EPUB or PDF download option. Some loans have no download option and cannot use this workflow.
- Install ADE on a Windows or Mac computer, then open the downloaded file. A library download may be an
.acsmlicense file rather than the ebook itself; ADE checks the license and downloads the authorized EPUB or PDF. - Authorize ADE and the eReader when prompted, using the required Adobe authorization. Connect the compatible eReader to the computer by USB.
- In ADE, drag the downloaded title to the connected device, then eject it safely and check that the book appears in the eReader’s library.
OverDrive distinguishes Adobe EPUB/PDF, which use Adobe DRM and require ADE authorization, from Open EPUB/PDF, which are not protected by Adobe DRM. A PDF also has a fixed page layout: unlike a reflowable EPUB, it generally will not automatically fit a small screen or adapt its text to font-size controls.

Files from other sources
Kobo supports a range of file types, including EPUB, EPUB2/3, PDF, MOBI, TXT, HTML, RTF, CBZ, and CBR, as well as Adobe DRM and Social DRM. Kobo says Social DRM files can be read without ADE, while Adobe DRM-protected EPUB and PDF files need ADE for transfer. Follow the source’s download and authorization instructions; format alone does not settle whether the file will open.

Books purchased from Kobo
Kobo says most books bought from its store are DRM-protected. For an Adobe DRM-protected EPUB or PDF, use ADE and the authorized account/device transfer process. For a DRM-free file, Kobo documents direct transfer from a computer. Check the individual purchase’s DRM status and available download options before moving to another eReader ecosystem.
Kindle purchases and the 2026 DRM-free download option
Amazon KDP says that, effective January 20, 2026, verified purchasers can download EPUB or PDF copies of confirmed DRM-free Kindle books. This offers a transfer route for eligible books, not a general export option for Kindle purchases: DRM-protected titles cannot be downloaded through this route for use on non-Kindle devices. Amazon also says the rule concerns future download access and does not change files already downloaded.

How to compare color eReaders for your books
| What to compare | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Library service and geography | Does your library use OverDrive/Libby, and does the lending route work where you live? Kindle Books borrowed through OverDrive are limited to U.S. libraries and schools. |
| Borrowing method | Does the exact model have built-in OverDrive, or will you need a computer, ADE, and USB transfer? |
| Title and download availability | Does the specific loan sync to the device or offer a downloadable EPUB/PDF? Some Libby loans do not sync to Kobo, and some library loans have no download option. |
| Format and layout | Does the eReader support the supplied format? If it is PDF, consider whether fixed-page layout will be comfortable on the screen. |
| DRM and authorization | Is the file DRM-free, Social DRM, Adobe DRM, or a DRM-protected Kindle purchase? Each has different transfer requirements. |
For a specific library card, region, or title, compatibility is not guaranteed by a model’s format list or color screen. Confirm the title’s delivery options with the library and check the manufacturer’s current support information for the exact eReader.
