AI coding assistants can make developers faster on bounded implementation tasks, but they can also add time when prompting, waiting, checking, and cleaning up outweigh the code they generate. The evidence does not support one productivity percentage for every team: a controlled experiment found faster completion on a small, defined task, while a realistic trial with experienced developers in familiar repositories found slower completion with AI available. To judge whether an assistant helps, measure the whole job—including review, rework, defects, and what happens after handoff—not just how quickly code appears.
What does developer productivity mean when AI writes some of the code?
Productivity is not the same as typing speed or the number of lines generated. A developer has completed useful work when a change solves the intended problem, passes the necessary checks, can be reviewed and maintained, and reaches the next stage without creating disproportionate follow-up work.
That distinction matters because an assistant can reduce one part of a task while increasing another. It might draft an implementation quickly, yet require extra prompting, waiting, verification, debugging, or cleanup. If those activities are omitted from the clock, the result can look faster than the actual end-to-end job.
A sound assessment therefore separates several outcomes:

- Task time: elapsed or active time to reach a defined completion point.
- Quality: whether the implementation meets requirements and passes the relevant tests or review checks.
- Rework: time spent correcting, replacing, or explaining generated code.
- Downstream cost: whether the change remains understandable and easy to evolve after handoff.
- Developer experience: whether the workflow helps a developer learn or feel more effective, which is useful but not a substitute for measured outcomes.
These dimensions can move in different directions. A team should decide in advance which outcomes matter for the task rather than treating a single speed measure as a complete verdict.
What do the studies say about whether coding assistants make developers faster?
Results vary with the task, the developers, the repository, and the outcome measured. The studies below are informative contrasts, not pieces of one universal average: they use different tools and methods, so their percentages should not be compared as if they were a head-to-head product test.
| Study and setting | Developer and repository context | Measured result | How far the result generalizes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Research controlled experiment, 2023 | Participants implemented a bounded HTTP server in JavaScript. | Participants with Copilot completed the task 55.8% faster. | Evidence for a specific, bounded implementation task; not a forecast of overall team velocity. |
| Google enterprise study, IEEE/ICSE-SEIP, 2025 | 96 full-time Google engineers used three internal AI features on a complex enterprise task. | Estimated about a 21% reduction in time on task. | The authors caution that internal-tool results may not carry over to other tools or settings. |
| GitHub randomized controlled study, 2024, updated 2025 | 202 developers with at least five years of experience completed an API-endpoint task. | Copilot users were 53.2% more likely to pass all ten unit tests; the study also reported small improvements in reviewed quality dimensions. | Useful evidence about a defined API task and its tests, not a guarantee of better code in every repository. |
| METR randomized trial, 2025 | 16 experienced open-source developers worked on 246 issues in repositories they knew well; tools were primarily Cursor Pro with Claude 3.5 or 3.7 Sonnet. | Allowing AI increased completion time by 19%. | A small, realistic snapshot of early-2025 tools in familiar codebases; the result need not apply to other developers, tasks, or later tools. |
| Empirical Software Engineering downstream-maintenance study, 2026 | The study compared an initial phase with a later phase of code evolution. | Median Phase-1 completion time fell 30.7%; there was no significant Phase-2 difference in downstream completion time or code quality. | Evidence that an initial time gain does not by itself establish a later maintenance gain; the available downstream evidence remains limited. |
The contrast is the key finding. A clearly scoped task can produce a visible time gain, while work in a mature repository that an experienced developer already understands can be a poor fit for an assistant workflow. The Google authors also explicitly warn against assuming their observed effect will apply broadly or persist across tools and time.

Why can AI speed up one task and slow down another?
An assistant changes the shape of the work rather than removing the need to do it. The balance depends on whether generating a plausible first version saves more effort than the interaction and verification it creates.

Bounded work can make a first draft valuable
A task with a clear input, output, and acceptance check gives the developer a relatively direct way to judge whether a suggestion is useful. The Microsoft HTTP-server experiment and the API-endpoint study illustrate how controlled tasks can reveal gains or quality differences on a particular outcome. Those findings are most useful as evidence about those tasks, not as a claim that all feature work will move at the same rate.
Familiar repositories can change the cost-benefit balance
In a codebase the developer knows well, existing conventions and dependencies may make a proposed change easier to assess—but the developer may also be able to implement it directly without a long prompting loop. METR’s trial is important because it tested experienced developers on issues in repositories they already knew, rather than a short, unfamiliar coding exercise. Its slower result shows why “the assistant produced code” is not enough to establish saved time.
More output can mean more review
Generated code still has to be checked against the request and the surrounding project. If a suggestion is incomplete or mismatched to the codebase, the developer may need to revise it, discard it, or investigate unexpected behavior. These are reasons to record review and rework as part of the task rather than crediting only the generation step.

It can do either, and speed alone cannot settle the question. The GitHub task found a higher likelihood of passing its ten unit tests for developers using Copilot and small improvements in several reviewed quality dimensions, but that is evidence tied to the study’s API-endpoint task and evaluation.

Conversely, an implementation that appears complete is not necessarily easy to maintain. A 2026 study in Empirical Software Engineering reported a median reduction in Phase-1 completion time but no significant later difference in completion time or code quality during Phase 2. That finding does not prove that generated code is always maintainable, nor that it inevitably creates maintenance debt. It means an early speed result should not be used as a proxy for later evolution.
For a team evaluating an assistant, quality checks should match the work. For example, if the normal task definition includes tests or review, record whether the change passes those checks and how much corrective work follows. If the code will be handed off or extended, include an appropriate later assessment rather than stopping the measurement when the first draft is done.
What do developers think about the productivity benefits?
Survey responses show that many developers expect productivity gains, but perceptions and measured task performance are different kinds of evidence. Stack Overflow’s 2023 survey had 32.81% of 38,594 respondents select increasing productivity as the most important hoped-for benefit of AI tools. In its 2024 survey, 81% agreed that increasing productivity was the biggest benefit they identified; views of accuracy were more divided, with 43% feeling good about it and 31% skeptical.

These responses help explain why assistants attract attention, and why trust remains part of the decision. They are self-reported views, not controlled measurements of how long a team takes to deliver work. A developer who feels faster may still be spending additional time checking results; a developer who distrusts output may use it only for narrow tasks where checking is straightforward. Treat perception as one useful adoption signal, alongside time and quality measures.

How can a team tell whether an assistant is helping?
Run a small, task-specific evaluation and compare complete workflows, not just code-generation speed. The goal is to find where the assistant changes outcomes for your developers and codebase, not to force every task into the same measurement.
- Choose comparable work. Select tasks with a clear definition of done and enough similarity to compare. Avoid combining a simple, bounded implementation with exploratory debugging or a large unfamiliar change as if they were equivalent.
- Record the context. Note the developer’s experience, familiarity with the repository, task novelty, programming language, and whether the assistant is used for autocomplete, chat, or multi-file agentic edits. These factors can affect both usefulness and the effort needed to verify changes.
- Define the start and finish. Use the same endpoints for both workflows. A reasonable completion point should include the checks your team expects, rather than ending when a suggestion first appears.
- Track effort by stage. Record time spent implementing, prompting or waiting, reviewing, testing, and reworking. Also note abandoned suggestions and significant corrections so a fast draft does not hide a costly finish.
- Capture quality and follow-up. Track test failures, review findings, and whether later work can evolve the code without unusual extra effort. Use measures that fit the task; do not assume a test pass covers every maintainability concern.
- Compare like with like. Separate results by developer experience, repository familiarity, task type, language, and assistant mode. A blended average can conceal that the tool helps one category of work and slows another.
- Review the trade-offs with developers. Ask whether the workflow was understandable and acceptable, but keep that feedback distinct from measured time and quality. Satisfaction may matter to adoption even when task time does not improve.
The comparison should answer a practical question: for which work does the assistant reduce total effort without an unacceptable change in quality or follow-up burden? If results differ by task class, a targeted use policy is more informative than a single company-wide productivity claim.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Are Copilot, Cursor, or another coding assistant worth using?
The evidence supports evaluating a workflow for a defined use case, not declaring one assistant universally worthwhile. Studies used different populations, tools, tasks, and outcomes: the Microsoft and GitHub findings concern Copilot tasks, Google studied internal features, and METR’s participants primarily used Cursor Pro with Claude models. These are not direct product comparisons.

Products and models change quickly, so results from 2023 through early 2025 should be read as dated evidence about the evaluated workflows, not a permanent ranking of current tools. The 2026 maintenance finding adds a different outcome, but the evidence base for downstream effects remains limited.
What is the practical verdict?
AI coding assistants can make developers more productive, but not automatically and not uniformly. The strongest case is a task where the tool’s output is quick to assess and the whole workflow can be measured; the clearest warning is that skilled developers may lose time when using AI in familiar, mature repositories. Decide with end-to-end task evidence—time, quality, rework, and follow-up—not generated-code volume or optimism alone.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a coding assistant help if I use it only for part of a task?
Yes. An evaluation can focus on one stage—such as drafting an implementation or exploring an unfamiliar API—provided the time and quality effects of that use are still counted in the full task. Partial use is also a way to identify which parts of a workflow merit broader adoption.
Why might an experienced developer get less benefit than a newer developer?
The available studies do not establish a general experience-based rule. A developer who already knows a repository may be able to make a change directly, while still needing to inspect suggestions; test experience levels separately rather than assuming either group benefits more.
Are developer surveys enough to decide whether a team should adopt coding AI?
No. Surveys are useful for understanding expectations and trust, but they do not measure your team’s end-to-end delivery time or maintenance outcomes. Pair feedback with a task-based evaluation that reflects the work your team actually does.
How often should a team repeat a coding-assistant evaluation?
Repeat it when the assistant, model, workflow, or relevant task mix changes enough that prior results may no longer describe current use. Because tools evolve quickly, keep the date and configuration with each result so later comparisons remain interpretable.
