To install Django, use a supported Python 3 release, create a project-specific virtual environment, install Django with pip, and verify it by creating a small project. Local development can use Django’s built-in runserver; a public VPS needs a production WSGI or ASGI server, normally behind a reverse proxy, plus HTTPS, static-file handling, logging, backups, and deployment checks.
The commands below cover macOS, Linux, Windows PowerShell, and a typical Debian/Ubuntu-style VPS. Django’s supported Python versions vary by release, so confirm the compatibility range for the version you plan to deploy before creating the environment.
What do I need before installing Django?
You need Python 3, a terminal, and permission to create files in your project directory. Use the newest Python micro release supported by your chosen Django release; Django’s documentation notes that only the latest micro release in each supported Python series is officially supported.
Check the Python compatibility range
The Django installation FAQ currently lists these ranges:
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Django release | Python versions listed as supported |
|---|---|
| Django 5.2 | 3.10–3.14 |
| Django 6.0 | 3.12–3.14 |
| Django 6.1 | 3.12–3.15 |
| Django 6.2 | 3.12–3.15 |
These ranges are tied to the Django release and can change as Python versions reach or leave support. If your application has a fixed dependency set, select the Django version first, then install a compatible Python version rather than assuming the newest Python will work with every older Django project.
Confirm that Python and pip are available
On macOS or Linux, run:
python3 --version
python3 -m pip --version
On Windows, use the Python launcher:
py --version
py -m pip --version
If either command fails, install Python 3 from the operating system’s supported package source or the official Python distribution, then open a new terminal. On Windows, enable the option that adds Python to your PATH when the installer offers it; the py launcher can still work even when the python command is not on PATH.
How do I install Django locally on macOS or Linux?
Create a directory for the project, make a virtual environment inside it, activate that environment, and install Django with the environment’s Python interpreter. This keeps Django and its dependencies separate from operating-system packages.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Create and enter a project directory.
mkdir myproject cd myproject - Create the virtual environment.
python3 -m venv .venvThe
.venvdirectory contains an isolated Python interpreter and package location for this project. - Activate it.
source .venv/bin/activateYour shell prompt normally gains a
(.venv)prefix. Activation changes whichpythonandpipcommands are found first. - Upgrade pip inside the environment.
python -m pip install --upgrade pip - Install Django.
python -m pip install DjangoThis asks pip for the current package release compatible with your Python interpreter. Django’s installation guide recommends installing an official release with pip.
Pin a known Django release when reproducibility matters
For an application that must be rebuilt identically, choose a version deliberately and record it in your dependency files. The release page observed for this guide lists Django 6.1.2, so the corresponding command is:
python -m pip install Django==6.1.2
That exact version is volatile; check the current official release information before using the command for a new project. For a team project, save the resolved dependency set after installation so another machine does not silently receive different packages.

How do I install Django on Windows?
Windows PowerShell uses the Python launcher and a different activation path. Run these commands from the directory where you want the project:
- Create and enter the directory.
mkdir myproject cd myproject - Create the environment with the launcher.
py -m venv .venv - Activate it in PowerShell.
. .venvScriptsActivate.ps1 - Update pip.
python -m pip install --upgrade pip - Install Django.
py -m pip install DjangoAfter activation,
python -m pipis preferable for subsequent commands because it guarantees pip belongs to the active environment.
If PowerShell blocks the activation script, the restriction is a Windows execution-policy setting rather than a Django error. You can use Command Prompt and run .venvScriptsactivate.bat, or follow your organization’s approved PowerShell policy procedure instead of changing security settings broadly.

How can I verify Django and create a first project?
Verify the installed package, generate a project, apply the initial migrations, and start the development server:
- Print the Django version.
python -m django --version - Create the project in the current directory.
django-admin startproject config .The trailing dot places
manage.pyand theconfigpackage in the directory you created instead of adding another nested folder. - Create Django’s built-in database tables.
python manage.py migrate - Start the local server.
python manage.py runserver - Open the site.
Visit

runserver reloads code during development and is intentionally lightweight. It is not hardened, tuned, or designed to handle public traffic, so do not expose it as the server for a production domain.

What is the correct way to install Django on a VPS?
A VPS installation adds operating-system packages, a non-root application account, a production application server, a reverse proxy, and operational settings. The following workflow assumes a Debian- or Ubuntu-style Linux server; package names and service commands differ on other distributions.

python -m pip install --upgrade pip python -m pip install Django gunicornInstall your project’s remaining dependencies from its dependency file at this stage. Gunicorn is a WSGI server; an ASGI project can instead use an ASGI-capable server appropriate to its workload.
- Copy or clone the project code.
Keep the source and virtual environment under the deployment account, and supply secrets through environment-specific configuration rather than committing them to the repository.

Verify Gunicorn before creating a service
Gunicorn’s guide recommends installing it in the virtual environment. Confirm the executable and version:
gunicorn --version
For a project package named config, a basic WSGI launch points Gunicorn at the callable generated in config/wsgi.py:
gunicorn config.wsgi:application
That foreground command is useful for a first test. A real deployment should run the process under a service manager so it starts on boot, restarts after failure, and writes logs where operators can inspect them.

| Interface | Entry point | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| WSGI | <project_name>/wsgi.py and its application callable |
Traditional synchronous Django applications and servers such as Gunicorn or uWSGI |
| ASGI | <project_name>/asgi.py and its ASGI application |
Async-capable deployments using servers such as Daphne, Hypercorn, Uvicorn, or Granian |
Django’s deployment documentation also lists Apache with mod_wsgi among documented WSGI options. Choose one interface, test it with the same settings and database used in production, and make the process manager invoke the matching entry point.
Do I need Nginx or Apache in front of Django?
A reverse proxy is the normal VPS topology, although the exact product is an infrastructure choice. The proxy terminates HTTPS, serves static assets efficiently, forwards dynamic requests to the WSGI or ASGI process, and can enforce request-size and timeout policies.
The public flow is usually:
- A browser connects to the proxy on ports 443 (HTTPS) or, temporarily, 80 for an HTTP-to-HTTPS redirect.
- The proxy serves collected static files directly.
- Dynamic requests are forwarded to the local application-server socket or port.
- The application server invokes Django’s WSGI or ASGI callable.
Do not expose the application server directly to the internet when the proxy is intended to be the public boundary. Restrict the VPS firewall to the SSH port and the web ports you actually use, and keep the application listener bound to localhost or a private socket where practical.
Can I use SQLite in production?
SQLite is included with Python and is convenient for local development or a small, low-concurrency service. Django’s FAQ recommends PostgreSQL for production, while also officially supporting MariaDB, MySQL, SQLite, and Oracle.
| Database choice | Best fit | Operational consideration |
|---|---|---|
| SQLite | Local prototypes, tests, and small installations with modest write concurrency | A single file is easy to copy, but concurrent writes, locking, backups, and growth need careful management. |
| PostgreSQL | General production workloads and substantial applications | Run a managed or self-administered database, create a dedicated least-privilege user, and test backups and restores. |
| MariaDB or MySQL | Production systems standardized on those engines | Use the engine’s supported driver and keep development and production behavior aligned. |
| Oracle | Organizations already operating Oracle infrastructure | Plan credentials, connectivity, migrations, and driver support as part of the deployment design. |
For a serious application, develop against the same database family you intend to run in production whenever practical. On a VPS, keep the connection name, port, database, user, and password in environment-specific settings, and run migrations as a deliberate deployment step rather than from an ad-hoc shell session.
What must I configure before making Django public?
Passing a page load is not a production readiness test. Work through these controls before DNS points users at the VPS:
- Deployment checks: run
python manage.py check --deploywith production settings and resolve relevant warnings. - Hosts and secrets: set
ALLOWED_HOSTSto the domains you actually serve, keep the secret key outside source control, and ensure debug mode is disabled publicly. - HTTPS: obtain and renew a certificate, redirect HTTP where appropriate, and enable secure-cookie and related transport settings after verifying the proxy forwards the correct scheme.
- Static files: set a production static location, run
collectstatic, and configure the proxy or another delivery layer to serve the collected files. - Error reporting: send exceptions and application logs to a monitored destination without exposing secrets or personal data.
- Database resilience: schedule backups, test restoration, and document how migrations are applied and rolled back when possible.
- Process lifecycle: configure worker counts, timeouts, automatic restarts, boot-time startup, and graceful deployment behavior for the chosen server.
- Firewall and accounts: expose only required ports, disable unnecessary services, and keep the Django process under a non-root account.
- Capacity: measure memory and CPU usage, then choose worker settings and database limits that fit the VPS rather than copying a generic number.
What is different between a local install and a VPS deployment?
The Python package is installed the same way, but the server role, database, and operational controls are different.
| Area | Local development | VPS production |
|---|---|---|
| Isolation | Project virtual environment such as .venv |
Virtual environment owned by the deployment account, with repeatable dependency installation |
| HTTP server | Django runserver for development and testing |
Production WSGI or ASGI server, normally behind a reverse proxy |
| Database | SQLite is a practical default | PostgreSQL is the recommended choice for production; other supported engines may fit existing operations |
| Traffic path | Direct request to 127.0.0.1:8000 |
HTTPS proxy to an application-server socket or private port |
| Settings | Convenient development defaults and local debug output | Restricted hosts, secret management, secure cookies, logging, backups, and monitored errors |
| Operations | Manual start and stop | Service manager, automatic restart, boot startup, firewall rules, and documented deployment procedure |
How do I troubleshoot a failed Django installation?
“No module named django” appears
The command is probably using a different Python interpreter from the one where Django was installed. Activate .venv, then run python -m pip show Django and python -m django --version. Using python -m pip instead of a standalone pip keeps installation and execution tied to the same interpreter.

The virtual environment will not activate
On macOS or Linux, confirm that you are in the project directory and that .venv/bin/activate exists. On Windows, use the PowerShell path with backslashes or the Command Prompt batch file; a shell execution-policy error is separate from Django and may require an approved policy change.
The project starts locally but fails on the VPS
Check the service log first, then verify the working directory, virtual-environment path, module name, environment variables, database connectivity, and file permissions. A successful local runserver launch does not prove that the production WSGI or ASGI callable, proxy headers, static-file path, or service account is configured correctly.
Static files return 404 after deployment
Run python manage.py collectstatic --noinput with production settings, confirm the configured destination contains the files, and verify that the reverse proxy maps its static URL to that destination. Keep media uploads separate from generated static assets and ensure the service account can read both locations.
DisallowedHost is logged
Add the exact public hostname, and any intentionally supported alternate hostname, to ALLOWED_HOSTS. Do not solve the error by allowing every host on an internet-facing service; correct the proxy’s host forwarding and Django’s environment-specific settings instead.
How should I maintain the installation after it works?
Record the Python and Django versions, dependency files, environment variables, service command, proxy configuration, database engine, and backup procedure. Test upgrades in a staging environment, read Django’s release notes for compatibility changes, and apply migrations as part of a controlled deployment.
When a project no longer needs its environment, deactivate it with deactivate and remove the .venv directory only after confirming that the source and dependency files are backed up. Recreating the environment from a pinned dependency set is safer than copying a virtual-environment directory between machines or operating-system versions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I install Django without a virtual environment?
Yes, pip can install Django into a user or system Python installation, but that couples unrelated projects and operating-system tools to one package set. A separate environment makes upgrades, rollbacks, and deployment reproduction much safer and normally avoids administrator privileges.

Activate the project’s environment and install the exact version with a command such as python -m pip install Django==5.2.0, replacing the number with the release required by the project. Check that release’s supported Python range and dependency constraints before changing either Python or Django.
Is Gunicorn required for every Django VPS?
No. Django needs a production WSGI or ASGI server, but the specific server depends on your interface and hosting design. Gunicorn is one documented WSGI option; ASGI deployments can use an ASGI-capable server, and other documented WSGI choices include uWSGI or Apache with mod_wsgi.
Why does Django ask me to run migrations after installation?
Django’s built-in applications define database tables through migration files. Running python manage.py migrate applies those files to the configured database; repeat the step whenever your project adds unapplied migrations, using the production database settings on the server.
