To use the Display & Video 360 API, you need a Google Cloud project with the API enabled, OAuth 2.0 credentials, and a Google Account that has been provisioned as a Display & Video 360 user (or a correctly configured service account). The API itself is free of charge, but it enforces per-minute request quotas: 1,500 total and 700 write requests per project, plus 300 total and 150 write requests per advertiser per project. Authentication uses OAuth 2.0, and performance reporting is handled by the separate Bid Manager API rather than the Display & Video 360 resource API.
What do I need before I can call the Display & Video 360 API?
Every integration needs four pieces: a Google Cloud project, the Display & Video 360 API enabled in that project, OAuth 2.0 credentials, and an identity with access to the relevant partner or advertiser. The identity is normally a Google Account that is already a Display & Video 360 user. A service account can work only after it has been associated with a Display & Video 360 user or is used through domain-wide delegation to impersonate one.
- Google Cloud project: Create a new project or select an existing one to own the API credentials and quota accounting.
- Enabled API: Turn on the Display & Video 360 API for that project.
- OAuth client: Create an OAuth 2.0 client ID and client secret, then obtain an access token after consent.
- DV360 authorization: Give the authenticating Google Account the required role in the partner or advertiser it must manage.
Each request carries an authorization token. That token identifies both the application and the user context, so possessing a client ID alone does not grant access to campaign resources.

How do I set up OAuth access step by step?
OAuth 2.0 is the only supported authentication method. Complete the following sequence in Google Cloud Console and your authorization flow:

- Create or select a project. Use the Cloud project that will own your credentials and receive quota usage.
- Enable the API. In the project’s API library, enable Display & Video 360 API. The console may ask an administrator to activate billing and accept terms while enabling an API in an existing project; that prompt is a Cloud-project setup requirement, not a DV360 per-request fee.
- Configure the OAuth consent screen. Enter the application details and publishing status required for the users who will authorize it.
- Create an OAuth 2.0 client ID and secret. Select the client type that matches your application, and download the credential file directly from Cloud Console. Treat the secret as sensitive.
- Request the scopes your calls need. Standard resource operations use https://www.googleapis.com/auth/display-video. Calls to the users service additionally require https://www.googleapis.com/auth/display-video-user-management.
- Obtain consent and tokens. Send the user through the OAuth authorization flow, exchange the authorization grant for tokens, and attach the resulting access token to every API request.
- Verify DV360 permissions. Confirm that the Google Account used during authorization is provisioned in the target partner or advertiser. A valid token with no DV360 role still produces a permission failure.
Keep client secrets, refresh credentials, and service-account key files out of source control and limit access to the operators who need them. A service-account key can authorize access to every Google service that the account is allowed to use.
Which OAuth scopes does Display & Video 360 require?
Use the https://www.googleapis.com/auth/display-video scope for ordinary Display & Video 360 resource requests. Add https://www.googleapis.com/auth/display-video-user-management when the integration calls the users service; the general scope alone is not sufficient for those user-management operations.
Ask only for the scopes the workflow needs. Scope consent and DV360 role permissions are separate controls: scopes describe what the application may request, while the user’s DV360 role determines which authorized operations can actually succeed.

Yes, but a service account is not automatically a Display & Video 360 user. Google documents two supported patterns:
Associate the service-account email with a DV360 user
Add the service-account email as a Display & Video 360 user and grant it access to the required partner or advertiser. The service account then obtains tokens with the scopes your application requests and acts within that provisioned role.
Use domain-wide delegation
In an administrator-controlled Google Workspace domain, configure domain-wide delegation and have the service account impersonate a specific Display & Video 360 user. The impersonated identity must itself have the required DV360 access, and the administrator must authorize the requested OAuth scopes.

Choose the first pattern for a narrowly scoped machine identity. Choose delegation when centralized domain administration and impersonation controls are more important. In either case, protect private key files and rotate or revoke them according to your organization’s security policy.
Which Display & Video 360 user role do API calls need?
The role attached to the authenticating identity controls the operations available after OAuth succeeds.

A 403 response usually means the token is valid but the DV360 user lacks the required role or resource access. Granting a broader OAuth scope does not bypass a missing DV360 role.
What endpoint and API version should I use?
Send REST requests to https://displayvideo.googleapis.com. The FAQ documentation describes v4 as the latest version it covers, while Google’s REST reference currently exposes discovery documents for both v5 and v4. Pin the version explicitly in a client library or in direct REST paths instead of relying on an unqualified default, and check the current Google reference before upgrading.
Version pinning makes an upgrade deliberate: you can test request and response changes, update generated clients, and roll back without an unnoticed discovery-document change affecting production.

Quotas are counted per minute and are enforced at both the project and advertiser levels. A request to a method whose URL includes an advertiser ID is subject to the advertiser bucket as well as the project bucket.

Write methods include operations such as create, patch, delete, and bulkEdit. Five methods are identified as write-intensive: customBiddingAlgorithms.scripts.create, customBiddingAlgorithms.uploadScript, firstPartyAndPartnerAudiences.create, firstPartyAndPartnerAudiences.editCustomerMatchMembers, and media.upload. Each of those counts as five write queries for quota accounting, so a single call can consume a larger share of the write allowance than an ordinary write.
List calls can also consume substantial total-request quota when they use tiny pages or repeatedly fetch unchanged data. Use server-side filters and the largest practical page size, then cache or checkpoint results where the workflow permits it.
What happens when the API returns 429 RESOURCE_EXHAUSTED?
When a project or advertiser limit is exceeded, the API can return HTTP 429 with the reason RESOURCE_EXHAUSTED and a message such as “Resource has been exhausted (e.g., check quota).” You cannot request a quota increase for Display & Video 360 API limits.

- Reduce the rate: Slow producers, lower concurrency, and avoid polling loops that request unchanged resources.
- Spread eligible work: If your business workflow genuinely covers multiple advertisers, distribute work across those advertisers so one advertiser bucket does not become the bottleneck. This does not remove the project-wide ceiling.
- Make list calls efficient: Apply filters and use the largest practical page size to reduce request count.
- Retry safely: Do not immediately replay every failed request. Retry only when the operation is transient or safe to repeat, and correct the rate problem before resuming.
Quota errors themselves count against quota. Design workers to stop or back off when they observe sustained 429 responses rather than creating a retry storm.
Does using the Display & Video 360 API cost money?
Google’s pricing statement is explicit: “All use of Display & Video 360 API is free of charge.” There is no per-request API fee described for the resource API.
A billing prompt can still appear when an administrator enables the API in an existing Google Cloud project. That prompt concerns Cloud project billing activation and acceptance of terms; it should not be interpreted as a charge for each DV360 API call. Keep any separate Cloud services, storage, logging, or compute costs in their own budget because they are not DV360 API usage charges.

Can the API pull impressions, clicks, spend, or conversions?
No. The Display & Video 360 API covered here manages DV360 resources but does not retrieve performance data. For offline performance reports, use the Bid Manager API to create, retrieve, and run Display & Video 360 reports.
Plan the integration as two separate surfaces: use the Display & Video 360 API for resource administration and the Bid Manager API for report generation and retrieval. Do not build a dashboard that assumes campaign-resource endpoints will return impression, click, spend, or conversion metrics.
Should I use interactive OAuth, a service account, REST, or a client library?
The right implementation depends on who operates the workflow, how it is governed, and whether it manages resources or produces reports.

For high-volume systems, design around both quota dimensions: project-wide capacity limits the aggregate application, while advertiser limits can throttle one tenant even when project capacity remains. For multi-tenant platforms, record advertiser IDs with each job so scheduling can enforce both buckets.

Authentication and permission failures are configuration problems, not rate problems. Fix the account, scope, role, or identifier before attempting the call again.

What should I verify before putting an integration into production?
- The Cloud project is the intended owner of credentials and quota usage.
- The API is enabled and the OAuth consent configuration matches the application.
- Every token requests the exact scopes required by its methods.
- The Google Account, service account, or impersonated user is provisioned in each target partner or advertiser.
- Client secrets and service-account keys are stored in a protected secret-management system.
- Client libraries or REST paths pin the intended API version.
- Schedulers enforce project and advertiser request budgets, including five-query accounting for the identified write-intensive methods.
- List methods use filters and practical page sizes, with checkpoints or caching where appropriate.
- Retry logic distinguishes transient, safe-to-repeat failures from invalid requests and permission errors.
- Reporting jobs call the Bid Manager API instead of expecting performance metrics from DV360 resource endpoints.
