DiscMaster 2 lets you search for files inside selected vintage floppy-disk and CD-ROM images associated with archive.org, then view or convert many results in a browser. It is a separate, experimental service—not a search of every archive.org item—and its format support is not complete.
What DiscMaster 2 does
Instead of requiring you to download a disk image and unpack it to see what is inside, DiscMaster indexes individual files found within selected disk-image collections. You can search for a file and, where supported, inspect it in a browser or use an automatic conversion to make an older format accessible on modern systems. The launch report described DiscMaster 2 as a “ground-up rewrite” of the earlier project. Hackster.io’s March 3, 2025 launch report quotes Jason Scott describing the project’s aim as making the contents of tens of thousands of 1990s and 2000s CD-ROMs findable.
The live service’s credits name tools for search, OCR, transcription, visual and audio search, and file identification and conversion. It also lists Mac and PC emulation, SWF/Flash emulation, and viewers for formats including ANSI animation and 3D polygon models. These are capabilities the service identifies; the credits do not establish that every search or file type will work in every case.
How to search and inspect a file
- Open DiscMaster and enter a filename, subject, or other terms in its search interface.
- Review the matching results. They represent indexed files within the selected media collection, rather than a complete inventory of archive.org.
- Open a result to see whether DiscMaster offers an in-browser viewer, emulation, or conversion for that file. Availability depends on the format and the service’s support for it.
- If a viewer does not load, check that JavaScript is enabled and that you are using HTTPS. Some features need those conditions; older browsers may also lack support for modern media formats. If the file still cannot be viewed or converted, the service may not support that format or that particular file.
What is included—and what is not
DiscMaster describes itself as an experimental, partial mirror of selected archive.org items, with a focus on vintage media and shareware. The underlying uploaded items come from archive.org users, but DiscMaster is not run by the Internet Archive and is not hosted in its datacenters, as Scott clarified in his January 21, 2024 project update. Some files may be unavailable or removed, and the service does not claim to cover all archive.org material.

Scott’s March 2025 announcement report mentioned 20,000 CD-ROMs beginning an ingestion process. That was an announcement-era plan, not a current collection count. The live homepage reported the following figures when checked on October 4, 2026; because they are live totals, they can change:

These are the service’s own reported figures, not an independent count or compatibility test. The 85% figure combines files “converted or identified”; it should not be read as a promise that 85% of files can be viewed successfully in a browser.

Project history and practical limitations
The original DiscMaster appeared in October 2022, went offline in June 2023 amid a need to change hosting and administration, and returned with its data and functionality by January 2024, according to Scott’s project update. DiscMaster 2 was announced in March 2025 as a rewrite. The live homepage still calls the service experimental.
