DigitalOcean announced Agent Droplets on October 1, 2026, as a monthly subscription for building and running AI agents. The announced plans cost $50 per month for Pro and $200 per month for Team, with discounted allowances for specified agent resources. They are not unlimited, all-inclusive inference plans: once an allowance is used, you can stop at the plan price or allow eligible usage to continue at list prices.

What DigitalOcean announced

DigitalOcean describes Agent Droplets as a bundled way to get agent resources under one subscription. The announcement says the service is available in regions where DigitalOcean Managed Agents is offered—not necessarily every DigitalOcean region. Existing Managed Agents customers can move to an Agent Droplet without changes, according to the company’s October 1 launch announcement.

The underlying Managed Agents service was announced for public preview on September 22, 2026. DigitalOcean describes it as a managed runtime with governed tool access and serverless inference. Its product materials list support for Claude Code, Codex CLI, OpenCode, Hermes, LangGraph-built agents, and custom OCI container images. These are vendor descriptions, not independent assessments of compatibility or performance.

Plans and included resources

Plan Monthly price Discount across included agent resources Agent and seat terms
Pro $50 per month, as announced October 1, 2026 15% Unlimited agents; no seat charges
Team $200 per month, as announced October 1, 2026 20% Unlimited agents; no seat charges

The launch announcement describes the included, discounted resources as DigitalOcean-hosted model inference, dedicated microVM compute, memory, session storage, and governed access to more than 16,000 tools. The percentages are discounts across included resources; they do not mean every possible resource or model is included without limit.

DigitalOcean also announced a free-trial credit of $5 and said no card is required. Eligibility and promotional terms apply, so check the current offer before relying on it.

What happens when the allowance runs out

The plan allowance is the key to understanding the headline “one price.” When included usage is consumed, the customer chooses whether to stop at the plan price or continue using resources at list prices. Continuing is an additional-cost choice, not free usage beyond the allowance.

Model choice matters, too. DigitalOcean says models it does not host—including Claude and GPT in its examples—are billed at list price. A plan’s resource discounts therefore should not be read as covering third-party model charges on the same terms as DigitalOcean-hosted inference.

Optional Inference and Agents Balance

Separately, DigitalOcean announced an Inference and Agents Balance that can be funded in amounts from $5 to $500. The balance is restricted to Serverless Inference, Action Gateway, and Managed Agents. According to the announcement, agents draw from it automatically after an Agent Droplet allowance is used. Other DigitalOcean cloud services continue to bill as usual.

What the bundle is built to provide

DigitalOcean says Managed Agents combines Harness Runtime and Action Gateway with its Inference Engine. The company describes the runtime as including a lightweight microVM, tools such as Chromium, a coding sandbox, and lifecycle APIs for persistent conversational history and working state. Action Gateway provides governed access through a managed MCP endpoint; DigitalOcean says it connects to more than 16,000 tools from over 500 providers. Its inference offering can use DigitalOcean-hosted models, proprietary third-party models, or a customer’s own model endpoint.

These descriptions explain the scope of the bundle, but they do not establish that every related capability is free or covered by a plan allowance. DigitalOcean’s separate inference pricing documentation says agent creation is free while model usage and additional capabilities such as knowledge bases and guardrails are billed; it also lists web-search and web-fetch charges. Check that live rate card for current charges and confirm which items are covered by a particular Agent Droplet allowance.

How to judge whether a plan fits

The plan makes most sense to evaluate as a bundled, allowance-based option—not as a promise of the lowest total cost. DigitalOcean positions it against per-seat subscriptions and multi-vendor do-it-yourself stacks, but that is the company’s framing rather than an independent market comparison. The available announcement does not establish that Agent Droplets cost less overall than alternatives.

Before choosing, estimate usage and compare options on the same basis:

  • Monthly commitment: the published Pro and Team subscription prices.
  • Included resources: compute, memory, session storage, hosted inference, and governed tools, along with the allowance available for the workload.
  • After-allowance behavior: whether you will stop usage or permit list-price charges.
  • Model mix: DigitalOcean-hosted inference versus third-party models billed at list price.
  • Scale and access: the plan’s unlimited-agent and no-seat-charge terms, alongside the needs of the people operating the agents.
  • Build effort: the setup and integration work required for this bundle compared with assembling services yourself.
  • Region: whether Managed Agents is offered where you need to run the service.

Without workload-specific usage estimates and comparable current prices for alternatives, a reliable savings claim is not possible.

What is established—and what remains a vendor claim

The prices, discounts, allowance choice, and named bundle components above are facts DigitalOcean stated in its October 1, 2026 launch materials. Claims about product speed or accuracy should be treated differently: DigitalOcean’s September 22 Managed Agents announcement reported a 305 ms resume time, performance 46% faster than other leading offerings, and tool search described as 42% more accurate. Those are company-reported comparative metrics; the cited release provides no independent comparative validation.

DigitalOcean’s intended framing is that an Agent Droplet should make getting started feel as direct as choosing a Droplet size. As Vinay Kumar, the company’s chief product and technology officer, put it in the launch announcement: “You pick a size and start.” Whether the subscription is simpler or less expensive for a particular workload depends on its allowance, model mix, and any list-price usage.
