Digital Xbox games and disc games differ most in how you access and share them. A digital purchase is licensed to your Microsoft account and to one designated Home Xbox; a physical game normally requires the disc in a compatible console to play. The Home Xbox is the easiest place to share digital games and play them offline, while discs can be lent or transferred but only work with a console that has an optical drive. Neither format guarantees that every game mode works offline or that every add-on is shared.
Digital Xbox games vs. discs: the key differences
| What matters | Digital game | Disc game |
|---|---|---|
| What grants access | Microsoft documents a user license tied to the purchasing account and a device license tied to its designated Home Xbox. Microsoft’s digital-goods usage rules describe how those licenses work. | The disc ordinarily acts as the play entitlement. Installing the game does not remove the need for the disc. |
| Sharing | Other users can play content licensed to the purchaser’s Home Xbox. Away from that console, the purchaser generally needs to be signed in and online. | The physical disc can be lent or transferred, but the person playing needs the disc and an optical-drive console. One disc cannot serve as an unrestricted simultaneous play license. |
| Offline play | The Home Xbox is the principal location for offline access, but a game’s own online requirements can still limit play or modes. | A disc can provide access without relying on the purchaser’s account license, but the title may still require an internet connection. |
| Console compatibility | Digital games work on digital-only hardware, subject to game compatibility. | Requires an optical drive. Xbox Series S cannot play discs; Xbox Series X models are not all alike, so check whether a specific model has a drive. |
| Keeping or transferring access | Access is governed by the account and Microsoft’s digital-goods rules; do not assume a digital license is transferable. | You can retain or pass on the physical media, subject to the title’s terms and any online-service requirements. |
Choose digital if you value convenient switching between games or use a digital-only console. Choose discs if lending or retaining physical media matters more and you have a compatible drive. A format preference is not a guarantee of legal ownership in an absolute sense.
How digital Xbox licenses and Home Xbox sharing work
Microsoft describes two licenses for Xbox One and Xbox Series digital games: a user license associated with the Microsoft account and a device license attached to the designated Home Xbox. The device license is what lets other people using that console access the licensed game without the purchaser remaining signed in. Microsoft’s developer documentation explains the same Home-console and roaming-license distinction in its Xbox licensing guidance.
On the purchaser’s Home Xbox
Other people who sign in on the Home Xbox can use games licensed to that console, even when the purchaser is not signed in. This is the practical way to share a digital library with household members on one console.

- Interact with every character in the world with more than just your gun
On another Xbox
The purchaser can access their library on other consoles by signing into the Microsoft account. For other accounts to use roaming content there, the purchaser must be signed in and connected; when the purchaser signs out, the roaming licenses become invalid for other accounts on that console.
One console at a time and Home Xbox changes
Microsoft’s usage rules allow access or installation on a reasonable number of consoles, but a game can be played on only one console at a time under the stated rules. A roaming session can coexist with play on the Home Xbox if a different user is signed in on the Home console. Microsoft allows up to five Home Xbox changes during a rolling one-year period, measured from the first assignment or change in that period; changing the Home Xbox moves the device licenses to the new console.

Game sharing does not mean every add-on is shared
Some add-ons or downloadable content may be limited to personal use. Microsoft’s developer guidance specifically says consumable add-ons are account-specific and are not shared. Check the terms for a particular add-on rather than assuming the base game’s sharing behavior applies to it.
Can you play digital Xbox games offline?
Usually, the Home Xbox is the best console to prepare for offline play. Microsoft’s offline licensing guidance gives the example of a player running a game on the Home console while offline, then playing online after signing in on a friend’s console. That describes license behavior; it is not a promise that every game launches offline or that every mode works without a connection.

- On the console you expect to use offline, set that console as your Home Xbox in the console’s personalization settings.
- While connected, install the game and open it once so any required updates or setup can complete.
- Check the game’s own connection requirements, especially for online-only modes or services, before relying on offline access.
Installation alone does not establish offline eligibility for every title. Microsoft does not provide a complete, static title-by-title list of which games and modes work offline.
Do you need the disc after installing an Xbox game?
For ordinary disc play, yes. Microsoft says a disc-based backward-compatible Xbox One game downloads to the hard drive after the disc is inserted, but the disc must remain in the drive to play. The disc is therefore a license check, not just an installer. See the Xbox backward-compatibility FAQ.

A borrowed or used disc can provide the physical game entitlement, but whoever plays still needs access to that disc and a console with an optical drive. Updates, online services, bonus content, or DLC may have separate requirements and are not guaranteed by possession of the disc.

No. Xbox Series S is an all-digital console and disc-based games are incompatible. For disc play, choose a console with an optical drive. Xbox Series X product information includes both disc-drive and all-digital configurations, so verify the exact model rather than relying on the Series X name alone; see Microsoft’s Xbox Series X|S information.

Can you convert an Xbox game disc to digital?
Microsoft announced a disc-to-digital feature for eligible Xbox One and Xbox Series X discs in an Xbox Wire post dated August 26, 2026, with Insider testing due to begin August 31. The feature is not a universal conversion or a way to separate a digital entitlement from its disc.
- To check a disc, insert it into a supported Xbox One or Series X console with a disc drive and launch the game. An eligible-disc prompt indicates support; Microsoft’s disc-to-digital support page describes the prompt and availability caveats.
- Microsoft’s usage rules say the limited digital license is granted only after a supported disc is successfully claimed or received. You must continue to possess the qualifying disc; Microsoft may revalidate eligibility, suspend or revoke access if you no longer possess it, and the license cannot be transferred separately from the disc.
- Not all discs qualify. Microsoft says eligibility can vary for technical, licensing, publishing, or other reasons and by market. Xbox 360 and Original Xbox discs are not supported by this feature.
- Where the game supports them, Play Anywhere or Cloud Gaming benefits may apply. The original disc continues to work as before.
Because eligible titles and availability can change, use the on-console prompt and current support information for the exact disc rather than relying on a general list.
