Microsoft’s documentation does not confirm that its latest Windows 11 update accidentally removes the Copilot app. The September 22, 2026 preview update for Windows 11 version 26H1—KB5124006, OS Build 28000.3086—does not list Copilot removal among its known issues. That does not rule out an individual case, but the available evidence does not establish the update as the cause. Microsoft’s update notes
First check what is actually missing
A missing taskbar pin, Start shortcut, or Copilot entry inside another app is not proof that the Copilot app was uninstalled. Microsoft documents several Copilot experiences and changing Windows entry points, so identify the missing item before trying to restore it. Microsoft’s Windows Copilot management guidance
- The consumer Microsoft Copilot app: the standalone app intended for personal use.
- Microsoft 365 Copilot app: a separate app associated with Microsoft 365 deployment and organizational management.
- Copilot Chat: a chat experience that may appear through different Windows or work contexts; it is not necessarily the same thing as the consumer app.
- An entry point: a pin, shortcut, or in-app link that can be absent even when the app itself remains installed.
To check whether the consumer app is installed, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps and search for “Copilot.” Also check Start. If it appears in Installed apps but not where you expect to launch it, the app may still be present and only its shortcut or entry point may have changed.
How to reinstall the consumer Copilot app
Microsoft says the Copilot app should be installed by default on new Windows 11 PCs. If it is absent, Microsoft’s documented option is to get it free from Microsoft Store. Microsoft Support: Get started with the Microsoft Copilot app for Windows

- 1.1 GHz (boost up to 2.4GHz) Intel Celeron N5030 Quad-Core
- Open Microsoft Store in Windows.
- Search for Microsoft Copilot and select the app.
- Choose Get or Install, then open it from Start when installation finishes.
This is the consumer app restoration route. It does not necessarily restore a Microsoft 365 Copilot configuration managed by an employer or school.
What to check on a work- or school-managed PC
Organizations can control app deployment and Windows Copilot experiences. If the device is managed, ask your IT administrator whether the organization deploys or restricts the app and which version you are expected to use. Microsoft 365 Copilot has its own deployment paths, including Microsoft Store, standalone installation, and management tools. The Microsoft 365 deployment FAQ says automatic installation with Microsoft 365 Apps requires version 2511 or later and applies to specified commercial channels; that automatic pathway does not target the European Economic Area. These conditions apply to the Microsoft 365 Copilot app, not automatically to the consumer Copilot app. Microsoft 365 Copilot app deployment FAQ
If a Microsoft 365 Copilot app installed automatically was later uninstalled, Microsoft says users must take action to reinstall it. Follow your organization’s deployment method rather than assuming a consumer Microsoft Store installation will restore the managed setup. Microsoft 365 Copilot app deployment FAQ

Record the details before diagnosing the cause
The title does not identify an update KB, Windows build, app variant, device, or account context, and Microsoft’s reviewed update notes do not confirm this removal. For a case-specific diagnosis, gather:
- Windows version and OS build.
- The installed update KB from Windows Update history, and whether it was a preview or regular update.
- The exact app name that is missing, and whether it is absent from both Start and Installed apps or only from a shortcut or entry point.
- Whether you use a personal account or a work or school account, and whether the PC is managed by an organization.
Those details can help separate an app deployment or policy change from a missing shortcut, but they do not by themselves prove that Windows Update caused the disappearance.

Should you roll back the Windows update?
Not on the evidence available here. The September 22, 2026 page covers a preview update for Windows 11 version 26H1 and does not list Copilot removal as a known issue. It cannot establish what happened on every device or update channel, but it provides no basis for attributing an individual missing app to that update. Check the app and account context first; for a managed PC, consult IT.
