A desktop thin client is an endpoint computer that connects over a network to a centrally hosted desktop or application environment. The endpoint handles display and input, while the remote system does most of the computing. Thin client describes the endpoint—not the server or the architecture hosting the desktop.

How a desktop thin client works

The user signs in on the endpoint and connects over a local network or the internet to a hosted computing environment. The device sends keyboard and mouse input to that environment and displays the remote interface. Applications and data may be hosted centrally, but the exact division of work varies: thin clients can still perform local processing or provide local functions. AWS explains the thin-client model and its variations.

The remote environment may use virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI), a session-based remote desktop service, or a service that delivers individual applications. Microsoft’s overview of Remote Desktop Services describes session-based desktops, virtual desktops, and RemoteApp.

Thin client, VDI, and remote desktop: the difference

Term What it means
Thin client The endpoint device or software client that relies substantially on remote computing resources.
VDI A way to host virtual desktops centrally and make them available to users. A thin client can access a VDI desktop, but the endpoint and VDI are not the same thing.
Remote Desktop Services A service model for delivering remote desktops or applications. It can provide shared sessions, virtual desktops, or individual applications.

These terms describe different parts of a deployment: the endpoint connects to a service, and that service may use VDI or another remote desktop model.

Thin client vs. a conventional desktop PC

A conventional PC generally runs more of its operating system and applications locally. A thin client depends more on remote computing, so its usefulness is tied to the availability and performance of the hosted environment. The boundary is not absolute: hardware and software designs vary, and some endpoints combine local and remote work.

Where desktop thin clients are used

Organizations may use thin clients when they want centrally managed desktops for distributed or hybrid teams, or standardized endpoints for facilities with consistent workloads. VDI is a common use case. Cisco also describes VDI in healthcare, education, and public-sector settings, but those examples do not establish that thin clients suit every organization in those fields. See Cisco’s VDI overview and AWS’s discussion of thin-client use cases.

Benefits and tradeoffs

  • Central administration: Managing hosted desktops and applications centrally can simplify administration across endpoints.
  • Network dependence: Connection availability and latency affect access and responsiveness. A slow or interrupted connection can disrupt work.
  • Hosting requirements: The central service needs appropriate capacity and administration; central hosting does not eliminate those costs or responsibilities.
  • Compatibility: Check whether the hosted environment supports the applications, peripherals, and display setup users need.
  • Local independence: If the hosted environment is unavailable, an endpoint with few local capabilities may be of limited use.
  • Security: Centralization can support a security strategy, but does not guarantee security; outcomes depend on configuration and policy.

What to check before choosing a thin client

Confirm the endpoint works with the specific remote desktop provider and deployment model. Check its supported protocols, operating system, display outputs, ports, peripherals, management features, and expected lifecycle. Also assess network resilience and latency, application needs, and how the central hosting service will be provisioned and managed. There is no universally suitable thin-client device.

Provider compatibility matters: for example, AWS documents its WorkSpaces Thin Client as designed for supported AWS desktop services in its architecture documentation. That product is a specific, time-limited example rather than a general recommendation: AWS says its support ends March 31, 2027, in its API welcome page, last published October 6, 2026.
