A production-grade Odoo implementation service is an engineering lifecycle, not a one-time installation. Start by measuring named users, concurrent activity, transaction types, imports, scheduled actions, integrations, database and attachment growth, peak periods, recovery objectives, compliance, and geography. Turn those assumptions into an architecture and service level covering the Odoo version, hosting, PostgreSQL, filestore, multiprocessing workers, cron limits, reverse proxy, security, backups, monitoring, upgrades, and rollback. Validate the design with production-like tests, rehearse cutover and recovery, and assign named owners for post-go-live tuning. Odoo.sh can simplify infrastructure operations, while self-hosting provides more control; the correct choice depends on dependencies, data-residency rules, connection patterns, and the operational capability of the implementation team.

What should a production-grade Odoo implementation service deliver?

The deliverable is a managed operating model for the ERP, not merely a configured database. A complete service takes the customer from workload discovery through architecture, customization governance, testing, cutover, and recurring support. Each phase should produce an artifact that the next phase can verify.

  • Discovery and sizing record: named users, peak concurrency, transaction mix, integrations, imports and exports, scheduled jobs, database and filestore growth, peak windows, recovery objectives, compliance requirements, and user geography.
  • Architecture decision: Odoo edition and major version, hosting model, PostgreSQL arrangement, filestore storage, reverse proxy and TLS design, worker and cron limits, network boundaries, and data-isolation rules.
  • Customization register: every custom module, dependency, owner, source-control location, migration plan, test coverage, and rollback method.
  • Environment plan: isolated development, staging, and production systems with controlled data refreshes and sandboxed external integrations.
  • Performance evidence: baseline and release test results for interactive journeys, imports, reports, integrations, scheduled actions, and websocket or live-chat traffic.
  • Operational runbook: monitoring dashboards, backup and restore procedures, incident severities, escalation contacts, maintenance windows, upgrade policy, and go-live rollback criteria.

This structure lets a customer distinguish an implementation that merely works in a demonstration from one that remains predictable under production load.

How do you discover workload and size an Odoo deployment?

Begin with observed or defensible workload assumptions. Worker counts, database sizing, and hosting decisions are consequences of those assumptions; choosing a server size first makes later performance failures likely.

Record users and concurrency

List named internal users, portal users, API clients, warehouse scanners, and other actors separately. Estimate simultaneous activity during normal operation and the busiest business interval. A company with 300 named users may have a very different requirement from one with 80 users if many of the 300 work concurrently or generate automated requests.

Capture the request mix rather than relying on a user total. Sales-order entry, inventory transfers, accounting posting, website traffic, search-heavy service work, reporting, and API calls exercise different parts of Odoo and PostgreSQL. Identify which actions are interactive and which can run asynchronously.

Inventory scheduled and batch work

Document every scheduled action, its frequency, expected row count, and acceptable completion time. Include stock valuation, recurring invoices, mail queues, imports, exports, report generation, synchronization jobs, and maintenance tasks. Record whether jobs overlap with the interactive peak. Cron contention can make a server appear under-sized even when interactive traffic alone would fit comfortably.

Measure data and growth

Establish current PostgreSQL database size, table growth, attachment volume, and monthly growth rate. Filestore growth can outpace database growth when users attach documents, images, or generated reports. Include retention rules and any legal hold that prevents deletion. These measurements determine storage capacity, backup duration, restore time, and the network bandwidth needed for recovery.

Define acceptance metrics before building

Put measurable targets in the statement of work. Useful measures include p95 latency for key interactive journeys, completion time for the largest import, maximum age of a queued job, error rate by integration, report completion time, websocket connection success, and elapsed time to restore a representative backup. A target without a measurement method is not an acceptance criterion, so specify the test data, concurrency, observation window, and pass threshold.

Account for geography and recovery

Record where users and data must reside, which regions require low latency, and whether regulations restrict transfers. Define the recovery point objective (how much recent data the business can lose) and recovery time objective (how long the service may be unavailable). These requirements influence hosting zones, backup destinations, replication choices, and the cutover plan.

Should you choose Odoo Online, Odoo.sh, or self-hosting?

Choose the hosting model only after checking customization, dependency, data-residency, integration, and operations requirements. Odoo.sh reduces infrastructure work but imposes platform limits; on-premise or another self-managed deployment permits deeper tuning while transferring operational responsibility to the service provider. Odoo Online should be evaluated when the required configuration and integrations fit its managed boundaries.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Decision area Odoo.sh Self-hosted or on-premise
Capacity and tunability CPU and memory limits apply; worker behavior is managed by the platform. Infrastructure, operating-system packages, and resource allocation can be selected and tuned by the operator.
Operational responsibility The platform handles much of the underlying hosting operation; the project team still owns application design, code, data, and platform constraints. The service provider operates TLS, firewalls, updates, backups, monitoring, capacity, and recovery.
System dependencies Customer-installed system packages are restricted and PostgreSQL extensions are not supported. Required Python packages, operating-system components, and PostgreSQL extensions can be planned and maintained.
Connection model Long-lived external connections are discouraged because workers can be recycled. Persistent connection patterns can be designed, secured, and operated when the infrastructure supports them.
Release workflow Builds follow repository revisions and provide production, staging, and development behaviors. The provider must implement source control, deployment automation, and environment promotion.
Database size constraint An Odoo.sh database may not exceed 10,000 tables and sequences. The service provider defines practical limits from PostgreSQL, storage, and operational capacity.
Recovery lifecycle Odoo documents platform backup retention and version phase-out dates; restore and exit procedures still belong in the service design. Retention, restore testing, supported-version policy, and migration or exit procedures are entirely the operator’s responsibility.

Before selecting Odoo.sh, test every integration against its worker lifecycle and package restrictions. A design that requires a PostgreSQL extension, a system library unavailable on the platform, or a connection that must remain open indefinitely may need a different hosting model or a redesigned integration.

How should the application, PostgreSQL, and filestore architecture be designed?

Separate concerns so that a failure or bottleneck in one layer does not silently compromise the others. The production design should document the application process model, database privileges, storage paths, network routes, and failure boundaries.

Use multiprocessing for production

Odoo’s multi-processing server is intended for production. Configure worker and cron limits to match measured hardware and workload rather than copying a generic number. Leave capacity for PostgreSQL, the reverse proxy, operating-system services, and short bursts; allocating every CPU and megabyte to application workers creates contention and increases failure impact.

Worker sizing is a testable service decision. Start with the expected concurrent request mix, run representative journeys, and observe CPU saturation, memory pressure, database wait time, request latency, and worker recycling. Increase capacity only after identifying which resource is limiting. More workers can increase database contention or memory use instead of improving throughput.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Protect PostgreSQL with least privilege

Use a dedicated database role with only the privileges Odoo requires. Keep administrative credentials separate, restrict network access to trusted application and operations hosts, and document who can perform schema changes. Plan connection limits and pooling around measured concurrency; an application that can create more database connections than PostgreSQL can serve will trade one queue for another.

Plan filestore as a first-class data set

Back up the filestore together with the database. A database restore without its attachments can leave documents, images, and generated files unavailable even though transactions appear intact. Track filestore capacity and growth independently, protect it with the same access controls as the database, and include it in restore tests.

Put HTTPS and routing at the edge

Terminate HTTPS at a reverse proxy and forward requests to Odoo through a controlled internal route. Enable Odoo proxy mode only when Odoo is actually behind that proxy. Route websocket and live-chat traffic correctly; a configuration that handles ordinary HTTP but drops upgrade requests produces intermittent chat or notification failures that are easy to mistake for application defects.

Isolate tenants and administration

If one service hosts multiple customers, isolate customer data and define database naming and filtering rules before onboarding the second customer. Restrict database-management routes, firewall internal interfaces, and prevent public access to administrative functions. Treat tenant boundaries, logs, backups, and support access as part of the architecture rather than as post-launch settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How many Odoo workers and cron jobs do you need?

There is no reliable worker number based only on named users. The required count depends on concurrent requests, request duration, memory per worker, scheduled work, database capacity, and the headroom needed for peaks. Use measured concurrency and resource observations to set limits, then validate them under the busiest realistic mix.

  1. Establish a baseline: run the key user journeys with a single controlled workload and record p95 latency, CPU, memory, database waits, and error rate.
  2. Add representative concurrency: combine interactive requests with the actual mix of imports, reports, API calls, and portal or website traffic.
  3. Introduce scheduled actions: run the largest jobs at their real frequency and observe whether they delay interactive work or exhaust database connections.
  4. Adjust one limit at a time: change application workers, cron workers, or job concurrency separately so the effect is attributable.
  5. Reserve headroom: stop increasing workers when CPU, memory, or PostgreSQL contention becomes the limiting factor; leave capacity for failover, maintenance, and traffic spikes.
  6. Document the operating envelope: record the tested concurrency, data volume, worker and cron settings, and the condition that triggers a capacity review.

On Odoo.sh, staging and development builds are restricted to a single worker and are further constrained in concurrent requests and system resources. They cannot represent production throughput, so use production-like tests on an appropriately sized production build or a self-managed performance environment when the platform limits prevent realistic load generation.

How should customization be governed so performance survives upgrades?

Every customization is both a business capability and a future upgrade and performance liability. Manage it as software with ownership, tests, dependencies, and a removal or rollback path.

Prefer maintainable modules

Keep business logic in versioned modules rather than one-off database edits or undocumented server changes. Maintain dependency manifests, pin compatible versions where appropriate, and review changes before deployment. Avoid changing core code when an extension point or separate module can provide the behavior; core modifications increase merge and migration risk.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Design for ORM and SQL efficiency

During review, look for N+1 ORM patterns, computed fields that recalculate across large record sets, unbounded searches, and reports that load more rows than a user can consume. Inspect slow SQL and add indexes only when measurements show a benefit and the write cost is acceptable. Control attachment delivery and avoid generating large reports synchronously in an interactive request when a queued job is more appropriate.

Assign upgrade ownership

For each module, name the owner responsible for compatibility with the next supported Odoo version, migration scripts, regression tests, and rollback. Include integrations and scheduled actions in the same review; a module can pass a screen-based test while silently breaking a nightly synchronization.

What should development, staging, and production environments look like?

Use isolated environments with controlled promotion. Staging must be production-like enough to expose performance and migration problems, but safe enough that tests cannot contact customers, charge payment methods, ship orders, or send real mail.

Development

Developers should work from source control with repeatable dependency installation and test data that does not contain unnecessary personal information. Fast feedback is the priority, but every change must still pass the checks required for promotion.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Staging

Refresh staging with anonymized, production-like volumes and representative attachment sizes. Sandbox mail, payment, shipping, marketplace, and other external integrations. Odoo.sh automatically captures outgoing staging email and disables or sandboxes several integrations; verify the behavior of each connector rather than assuming all side effects are blocked.

Production

Production should receive only an identified revision that passed staging tests. Keep deployment logs, database migration output, configuration changes, and approval records. Separate production credentials and secrets from lower environments, and restrict support access to the minimum required window.

Rehearse promotion and rollback

Perform at least one cutover rehearsal with the expected data volume. Measure migration duration, backup time, downtime, smoke-test duration, and the point at which rollback is no longer safe. Define who can call a rollback and what evidence is required; an ambiguous decision during a failed release prolongs the outage.

How do you validate Odoo performance before go-live?

Test complete user journeys and background work, not just a login page. Compare every release with a baseline taken before customization so regressions are visible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Interactive flows: create and confirm sales orders, reserve and transfer inventory, post accounting entries, search large datasets, and open the reports users rely on daily.
  • Bulk operations: import the largest realistic file, export representative data, process mass updates, and generate high-volume reports.
  • Automation: run scheduled actions, mail queues, recurring documents, and synchronization jobs at their expected overlap with user activity.
  • Integrations: exercise API authentication, retries, rate limits, payload sizes, timeout handling, and duplicate prevention.
  • Realtime traffic: test websocket and live-chat connections through the same reverse proxy and TLS path used in production.
  • Failure behavior: stop an integration, fill a queue, exhaust a downstream service, and restore a backup to confirm that alerts and recovery procedures work.

Collect p95 latency, batch completion time, queue age, error rate, CPU and memory pressure, database wait events, worker restarts, and recovery duration. Investigate slow SQL, excessive computed fields, unbounded reports, attachment delivery, and cron contention before adding hardware; the symptom may be an inefficient operation rather than insufficient capacity.

Which security and resilience controls belong in the service?

Security and recoverability are production features. Odoo’s production guidance calls for HTTPS through a reverse proxy, proxy mode only behind that proxy, secure database-management routes, current installations, and daily database and filestore backups.

  • Transport: enforce HTTPS and redirect or block insecure access at the edge.
  • Administration: restrict database-management routes, use strong administrator credentials, and separate administrative accounts from daily user accounts.
  • Network: firewall PostgreSQL and internal services, expose only required proxy endpoints, and rate-limit public or authentication-sensitive routes.
  • Updates: keep Odoo, operating-system components, dependencies, and custom modules on a documented supported-version policy.
  • Backups: back up both the PostgreSQL database and filestore to remote storage, encrypt transfers and storage where required, and monitor job success rather than assuming a scheduled task completed.
  • Restore testing: restore a representative database and filestore together, verify attachments and critical transactions, and measure the elapsed recovery time against the RTO.
  • Monitoring: alert on failed backups, disk growth, memory pressure, worker restarts, queue age, integration errors, and latency regressions.

Keep public demo, test, and staging systems separate from production. A test system with production credentials or live endpoints is an avoidable path to data disclosure and accidental customer actions.

What Odoo.sh limits and lifecycle facts affect service design?

Odoo.sh is managed infrastructure, but its constraints must be explicit in the implementation contract. The following figures come from Odoo’s current FAQ and hosting documentation as accessed in 2026.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Odoo.sh characteristic Published value or behavior Design implication
Database object limit 10,000 tables and sequences maximum per database. Review module footprint, table creation, and migration plans before importing or consolidating databases.
Production backup frequency Production builds are backed up every 24 hours. Confirm that the resulting recovery point meets the customer’s RPO; add an independent strategy when it does not.
Full backup retention 14 full production backups retained for up to three months: one per day for seven days, one per week for four weeks, and one per month for three months. Align legal retention, restore testing, and long-term archival requirements with the documented window.
Staging and development workers Restricted to a single worker with further limits on concurrent requests and system resources. Do not use these builds as proof of production throughput.
Scheduled actions Execution time limits apply. Split long jobs, make them resumable, or redesign the process before migration.
System packages and PostgreSQL Customers cannot install arbitrary system packages, and PostgreSQL extensions are not supported. Validate dependencies and extension requirements during discovery.
Long-lived connections Discouraged because workers may be recycled. Use short-lived, retryable integrations or select infrastructure that supports persistent sessions.
Hosting zones Iowa, Toronto, Saint-Ghislain, Dammam, Mumbai, Singapore, and Sydney; underlying providers and exact data-center locations can change. Confirm current availability, latency, residency, and contractual requirements before committing to a region.
Imported database version Imported database dumps must match the requested major Odoo version. Plan version alignment before migration and include conversion work in the cutover schedule.

These limits do not make Odoo.sh unsuitable; they make dependency and workload validation mandatory. A service provider should record which constraints were tested and what design change is required if the workload grows beyond them.

What should an Odoo go-live and support package include?

A go-live package should make the first production week controlled and observable, then transition into recurring engineering work rather than an indefinite emergency period.

Cutover preparation

  1. Freeze configuration and code changes at an agreed time.
  2. Take and verify a final database and filestore backup.
  3. Run the rehearsed migration and record duration, warnings, and row or attachment counts.
  4. Switch integrations and DNS or proxy routes according to the approved sequence.
  5. Run smoke tests for authentication, sales, inventory, accounting, mail, reports, and critical integrations.
  6. Open the system in controlled waves if the business can support phased access.

Go-live monitoring

Provide dashboards for p95 interactive latency, queue age, error rate, worker restarts, database health, storage growth, integration failures, and backup status. Set alert thresholds and an on-call owner before users begin work. Monitoring without an escalation path only produces unassigned notifications.

Incident and rollback runbook

Define severity levels, communication channels, evidence to capture, and the person authorized to pause processing. Include rollback criteria such as unrecoverable migration errors, data-integrity failures, or sustained latency beyond the accepted threshold. Document how to disable a faulty integration without disabling unrelated business functions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Recurring service

  • Post-go-live performance tuning based on real traces and slow-query evidence.
  • Backup-restore drills that include the database and filestore.
  • Capacity reviews when user count, transaction volume, attachment growth, or integration load changes.
  • Patch and upgrade planning with compatibility testing and migration scripts.
  • Review of custom-module ownership, dependency freshness, and test coverage.
  • Periodic access, firewall, credential, and data-retention reviews.

Put response times, maintenance windows, escalation ownership, and the boundary between application support and infrastructure support in writing. This prevents a performance incident from becoming a dispute about who is responsible for the next diagnostic step.

How can a customer evaluate an Odoo implementation provider?

Ask for evidence that the provider can operate the system after configuration is complete. The strongest evaluation is a review of artifacts and rehearsals, not a promise of a particular worker count or server size.

  • Does the proposal show measured workload assumptions and named acceptance metrics?
  • Does it explain why the selected hosting model fits dependencies, data residency, integrations, and recovery objectives?
  • Are source control, code review, module ownership, migration scripts, and rollback included?
  • Are staging integrations sandboxed, and is anonymized production-like data used for performance tests?
  • Does the test plan include imports, reports, scheduled actions, APIs, websocket traffic, and failure scenarios?
  • Are database and filestore backups remote, monitored, and restored in a rehearsal?
  • Are go-live roles, incident severity, escalation, and rollback authority named?
  • Is there a recurring plan for tuning, upgrades, capacity, and recovery rather than only an initial launch milestone?

A provider that can answer these questions with test records and runbooks is designing a service. One that supplies only a module list and an installation date has not yet addressed production performance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Odoo.sh run an integration that keeps a connection open all day?

It is a poor fit for a connection that must remain open indefinitely because Odoo.sh can recycle workers. Prefer short-lived, retryable calls with durable checkpoints, or choose infrastructure where persistent connections are an explicit supported requirement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How can I prove that a backup is usable rather than merely present?

Restore the database and filestore together into an isolated environment, then verify attachments, users, critical transactions, scheduled jobs, and integration credentials. Record the elapsed restore and validation times so the result can be compared with the recovery-time objective.

What should happen when a scheduled Odoo job exceeds its platform time limit?

First identify whether the job is processing an unbounded data set, waiting on an external service, or competing with other cron work. Split it into resumable batches, add progress checkpoints and retries, or move the workload to an architecture whose execution limits match the process.

Which warning signs show that an Odoo customization will hurt a future upgrade?

Undocumented core edits, missing dependency manifests, no migration script, and tests that cover only the happy path are strong warning signs. Treat the module as an owned product with version compatibility, regression coverage, and a tested rollback before approving it for production.

When should an Odoo capacity plan be revisited?

Review it whenever concurrency, transaction volume, attachment growth, scheduled-job duration, integration traffic, or user geography changes materially. A sudden rise in queue age or p95 latency is also a trigger to compare current measurements with the original operating envelope.
