Use descriptive statistics to summarize the data you actually collected. Use inferential statistics when you want to estimate a population value or evaluate a claim that goes beyond those observations. The key question is whether your conclusion is about the records in hand or a larger population.
What is the difference between descriptive and inferential statistics?
OpenStax defines descriptive statistics as organizing and summarizing data. A mean, median, graph, or table can describe the cases that were measured.
Inferential statistics use sample data and probability-based methods to draw conclusions about a population or process beyond the sample. Common aims include estimating a population parameter, quantifying uncertainty, or testing a claim. Inference does not make a conclusion certain; its strength depends on the data collection and whether the method’s assumptions are appropriate.
| Question | Descriptive statistics | Inferential statistics |
|---|---|---|
| What is the target? | The records or cases observed | A population or process beyond the observed sample |
| What is the aim? | Summarize, organize, or display the data | Estimate a parameter, quantify uncertainty, or assess a claim |
| Typical outputs | Tables, graphs, means, medians, proportions, and measures of spread | Point estimates, confidence intervals, and hypothesis-test results |
| What should be explained? | Which data are included and what the summaries represent | The target population, how data were collected, assumptions, uncertainty, and limits |
When should I use descriptive vs. inferential statistics?
Use descriptive statistics to report what you observed
If a teacher reports the average and distribution of scores for the 28 students who took one class exam, and limits the claim to those students and that exam, the report is descriptive. It summarizes the observed group without claiming that it represents other students.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Use inferential statistics to address a wider population
If a researcher samples students to estimate the average score for all students in a district, the target is the district population, not just the students in the sample. The researcher should use an appropriate inferential method and explain the sampling approach and uncertainty.
Before making a population claim, define the population and consider whether the sample represents it. A large sample alone does not guarantee an unbiased or generalizable result. OpenStax explains that a sample is a subset of a larger population and that sample statistics can be used to estimate population parameters in its definitions of statistics and key terms.

Is a mean descriptive or inferential?
It depends on how the mean is being used. The mean of a sample is a descriptive summary when it is reported as the average for that sample. The same value can serve as a point estimate of a population mean when it is used to make an inference about the larger population. The arithmetic is the same; the scope and purpose of the claim differ.
Can descriptive and inferential statistics be used together?
Yes. An analysis can first describe the sample’s pattern, then use inferential methods to estimate a population quantity or assess a hypothesis. Descriptive summaries help readers understand the observed data; inference addresses a question that extends beyond them. Neither category is inherently better—the right choice depends on the question.

How do confidence intervals and hypothesis tests work?
Confidence intervals express uncertainty around an estimate
A point estimate is a single sample-based value used to estimate a population parameter. A confidence interval gives a range and communicates uncertainty around that estimate. Explain the parameter being estimated, the point estimate, the interval, the confidence level, and the assumptions in plain language. OpenStax’s confidence-interval chapter introduction illustrates the idea with a teaching example: for a sample of 100 music customers, an assumed known population standard deviation of 1, and a sample mean of 2 songs per month, it gives a 95% interval of 1.8 to 2.2 songs per month. Those figures are instructional, not findings about music customers or a generally applicable interval.
Hypothesis tests assess a claim; they do not prove it
A hypothesis test evaluates sample data in relation to a null hypothesis. A typical procedure specifies competing hypotheses, collects data, selects an appropriate distribution, analyzes the sample, and states a conclusion. The result is a decision under the method—not proof that a hypothesis is true or false. Use “reject the null hypothesis” or “fail to reject the null hypothesis,” as appropriate, rather than saying the test proved a claim. See OpenStax’s hypothesis-testing chapter introduction.

What can limit an inferential conclusion?
- Sampling: Explain how the sample was obtained and whether it reflects the population you want to discuss.
- Scope: Do not extend a conclusion to groups, places, or times that the data and sampling method do not cover.
- Uncertainty and assumptions: Report the relevant uncertainty and use a method whose assumptions fit the data and question.
- Causation: Statistical inference alone does not establish that one factor caused another. Causal claims need an appropriate study design and supporting reasoning.
