The Dell OptiPlex 7060 Micro is still a good small, quiet office PC in 2026 when equipped with a Core i5-8500T, 16GB of RAM and an SSD, but it is not a modern gaming or workstation computer. Buy it for compact productivity, dual displays and business features—not if a newer mini PC costs only slightly more.

The important word is configuration. “OptiPlex 7060” describes a family of Micro, SFF and Tower desktops, and used listings can differ in processor, memory, storage, Wi-Fi, ports, operating-system licensing and included accessories. The original review sample was a Micro with an i5-8500T, 8GB of RAM and a 256GB M.2 SATA SSD, so its results do not automatically apply to every listing.

Key takeaways

  • The best mainstream target is a Core i5-8500T, 16GB of DDR4 SO-DIMM memory and a 512GB SSD.
  • The Micro has two SO-DIMM slots and supports up to 32GB of memory, unlike the larger SFF and Tower versions, which have four DIMM slots and higher capacity limits.
  • The original IT Pro review found its i5-8500T sample quiet for ordinary work, but slower than a regular-power OptiPlex 5060 during video encoding and multitasking.
  • The integrated Intel UHD Graphics 630 is suitable for older or lightweight games, not modern demanding games, 3D rendering or GPU-accelerated creative work.
  • Dell’s support page currently lists Windows 11 for the OptiPlex 7060 Micro, but buyers must still check the exact unit’s TPM, Secure Boot, BIOS and activation status.
  • There is no universal fair price in 2026: the asking price must be compared with the included RAM, SSD, adapter, Windows licence, accessories and newer mini PCs in the buyer’s market.

What is the Dell OptiPlex 7060 Micro?

The Dell OptiPlex 7060 Micro is the smallest version of Dell’s 2018-era business desktop family. The Micro, also called MFF or Micro Form Factor, uses low-power 35W T-series Intel processors and prioritises a small footprint over expansion. The OptiPlex 7060 SFF is larger and easier to expand, while the Tower is the biggest and most upgradeable version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Dell’s official processor documentation lists both standard 65W desktop processors and 35W T-series processors for the broader OptiPlex family, but the T-series parts are the relevant choices for the Micro. The exact processor matters because a Celeron or Pentium listing should not be judged as though it were an i5 or i7 model. See Dell’s official Micro-compatible processor list before buying.

OptiPlex 7060 version What it prioritises Who should choose it
Micro / MFF Minimum size, low power, VESA mounting and quiet office use Buyers who value desk space and do not need a discrete GPU or PCIe expansion
SFF More internal room, easier access and more expansion Buyers who need additional drives, expansion cards or sustained desktop-class performance
Tower Maximum expansion and conventional desktop hardware Buyers who need a graphics card, multiple drives or the greatest upgrade flexibility

Used sellers sometimes call the Micro “Mini,” “Tiny” or even “SFF.” Do not rely on the listing title. Check the photographs, dimensions and rear-panel layout. The Micro is not simply a smaller Tower; the chassis determines the processor class, memory format, graphics options and expansion possibilities.

How small is the OptiPlex 7060 Micro?

The reviewed unit measured 182 × 36 × 178mm and weighed 1.18kg, according to IT Pro’s July 25, 2019 review. Those dimensions explain the Micro’s main advantage: the computer can sit behind a monitor, under a desk or on a shelf without taking the space of a conventional desktop.

The chassis can be VESA-mounted, but a VESA-compatible computer is not the same thing as a complete mounting kit. A used listing may contain only the PC. A compatible bracket, sufficient cable clearance and somewhere to place the external power brick may all need to be provided separately. Mounting can also make the power button and rear ports difficult to reach.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Behind-monitor mounting is most practical when the display, bracket and cables leave room for ventilation. Avoid enclosing the Micro in a tight cabinet or pressing its air vents against a surface. A cramped installation can make an old fan run more often and can turn an otherwise quiet office PC into a noticeably noisy one.

Which processor should you buy?

The Core i5-8500T is the best value target for most buyers. The Core i5-8400T is a reasonable lower-cost alternative, while the Core i7-8700T is the platform’s performance ceiling and can make sense for heavier multitasking if the price premium is modest.

Dell lists these Micro-compatible processors: Core i3-8100T, Core i3-8300T, Core i5-8400T, Core i5-8500T, Core i5-8600T, Core i7-8700T, Celeron G4900T and Pentium Gold G5400T. Dell’s processor documentation identifies Intel UHD Graphics 630 across this list. The official list is useful because a seller’s generic “i7 desktop” description does not reveal whether the machine is actually a Micro-compatible T-series model.

Processor choice Buying verdict Suitable workload
Core i5-8500T Best value target Office applications, browsers, video calls, administration and moderate multitasking
Core i5-8400T Acceptable budget option General productivity when priced clearly below an i5-8500T system
Core i5-8600T Capable but price-dependent Heavier multitasking where the additional cost is justified
Core i7-8700T Best performance option in the platform Development, compiling, virtual machines and demanding multitasking, within the limits of the chassis
Core i3 models Usable only for lighter work Basic office work, web browsing and simple terminals
Pentium or Celeron Avoid unless extremely cheap Very light single-purpose tasks

The reviewed Core i5-8500T has six cores, a 2.1GHz base clock and boost up to 3.5GHz. In IT Pro’s specific sample, the processor scored 4,143 in Geekbench 4 single-core and 15,344 in multi-core testing. Those are historical results from one configuration, not a promise that every refurbished unit will deliver the same score. BIOS settings, cooling, memory configuration and wear can affect performance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The T-series processor is also a compromise. Lower power consumption helps the Micro fit its small thermal envelope, but a 35W T-series chip is not equivalent to its higher-power desktop counterpart in sustained workloads. The i7-8700T offers more headroom, but the Micro still remains a compact office platform rather than a workstation.

How much RAM can the Micro take?

The OptiPlex 7060 Micro has two SO-DIMM slots and supports up to 32GB of DDR4 memory, according to Dell’s OptiPlex 7060 specification sheet. SO-DIMM is laptop-style memory; standard desktop DDR4 UDIMMs do not fit the Micro.

Memory Practical verdict in 2026 Good for
8GB Bare minimum Light Windows use, a small office application set or a single-purpose terminal
16GB Sensible target Office work, many browser tabs, video calls and ordinary multitasking
32GB Best maximum configuration Virtual machines, development, browser-heavy work and longer useful life

Buy matching DDR4 SO-DIMMs where possible, and confirm the installed memory type and speed in BIOS or Windows before ordering. A listing with 8GB may be inexpensive but can become poor value if the seller charges heavily for an upgrade.

Memory replacement is possible but not always as convenient as the two-slot specification suggests. IT Pro noted that the cooling assembly may need to be removed to reach the memory, whereas the 2.5-inch drive area is more accessible. For most owners, increasing an 8GB machine to 16GB or 32GB is a more useful upgrade than chasing a processor swap.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What storage does the OptiPlex 7060 Micro support?

The reviewed machine used a 256GB M.2 SATA SSD, not an NVMe drive. IT Pro measured approximately 516.9MB/s sequential read and 441.3MB/s sequential write on that review sample—typical SATA SSD performance, but materially below modern NVMe storage.

That distinction matters because M.2 describes a physical form factor, not one universal storage protocol. An M.2 SATA module and an M.2 NVMe module are not automatically interchangeable. The buyer should check the exact motherboard and service documentation before ordering an NVMe drive. Dell’s system-information documentation and the seller’s photographs can help establish the installed configuration.

The chassis also provides a 2.5-inch drive bay, making a 2.5-inch SATA SSD a practical capacity upgrade. However, “supports a 2.5-inch drive” does not guarantee that a used unit includes the drive caddy, bracket, SATA cable or power connection. Require the seller to confirm those parts before treating the bay as ready to use.

Storage configuration Assessment What to verify
256GB M.2 SATA SSD Usable boot drive but cramped for a general Windows PC Whether the drive is healthy and whether it is SATA rather than NVMe
512GB SSD Better general-purpose minimum Interface, health report and whether Windows is activated
M.2 SSD plus 2.5-inch SATA SSD Useful combination for boot and bulk storage Caddy, cable, mounting hardware and motherboard support
Hard disk drive Slowest and least attractive option Whether replacing it with an SSD makes the total cost sensible

What ports and displays does it have?

The official specification lists one front USB-C port, one front USB-A port, four rear USB-A 3.1 Gen 1 ports, Gigabit Ethernet, two DisplayPort outputs, a serial port, two PS/2 ports, a universal audio jack and a line-out. Optional configurations can add a third video output or a media-card reader. Dell’s official platform specification should be treated as a menu of supported configurations, not a guarantee that every used unit has every option.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The reviewed configuration had five USB 3 ports, one USB-C port, two DisplayPort outputs, Gigabit Ethernet, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. IT Pro also noted that the Micro gives up some front USB connectivity and the SD-card reader available on larger versions.

Two DisplayPort outputs make the Micro a useful dual-monitor office computer. Buyers needing HDMI, VGA, USB-C video or a third display must inspect the exact rear panel. Stock photographs are unreliable for refurbished machines because optional port modules may be absent. The front USB-C connector should not be assumed to provide the same display, charging or high-speed capabilities as Thunderbolt or USB4.

Wireless connectivity is also configuration-dependent. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth may be absent, and a machine may have a wireless card without its antenna. IT Pro’s review sample included Wi-Fi with a separately packaged antenna. Ask whether the card, antenna and rear bracket are included before buying.

Is the OptiPlex 7060 Micro quiet?

IT Pro described the reviewed unit as practically silent during light workloads, with a mild hum during more intensive use. That is a useful indication of the Micro’s design, but it is not a guaranteed acoustic result for every refurbished machine.

Fan noise depends on the CPU, BIOS fan behaviour, dust, ambient temperature, thermal paste and fan-bearing condition. A former office fleet machine may have accumulated years of dust even if the exterior looks clean. Ask the seller whether the machine has been tested under sustained load, and listen for rattling, grinding or rapid fan changes during a return period.

The Micro can suit a bedroom, reception desk or living-room workspace when it is clean and sensibly ventilated. Hiding the computer behind a monitor preserves desk space but can restrict airflow and make fan noise more noticeable. Cleaning the heatsink and fan, replacing degraded thermal paste where appropriate and avoiding enclosed cabinets are more reliable strategies than assuming a 2019 review describes a 2026 refurbished unit.

How does the OptiPlex 7060 Micro perform in 2026?

In 2026, the OptiPlex 7060 Micro is best judged by workload. A correctly configured i5 or i7 model remains comfortable for everyday office computing, but its age and integrated graphics make it a poor choice for modern performance-intensive work.

Workload Verdict Reason
Microsoft Office and web applications Good An i5 model with 16GB RAM and an SSD has adequate capacity for normal productivity
Video calls and media playback Good The platform is suited to ordinary desktop communication and playback
Point-of-sale or reception terminal Good Compact size, wired networking and legacy business connectivity are useful
Lightweight coding and administration Good An i5 or i7 and 16GB–32GB provide reasonable headroom
Light home-server tasks Possible Small size and low-power CPU help, but storage and networking expansion are limited
Older or lightweight games Limited but possible Integrated graphics can handle less demanding software at reduced settings
Modern AAA games Poor fit There is no practical conventional discrete-GPU upgrade path
3D rendering, GPU compute or professional video editing Poor fit UHD Graphics 630 and the compact chassis are not designed for these workloads
Several demanding virtual machines Limited CPU, memory ceiling, storage and thermal limits become significant

IT Pro found the i5-8500T sample comfortable for browsers and Microsoft Office but substantially slower than the larger, regular-power OptiPlex 5060 in video encoding and multitasking. That historical comparison supports the general trade-off: the Micro saves space and power, while the larger desktop can sustain more performance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The historical Geekbench results should not be presented as a current benchmark or as a guarantee for an unknown used unit. In practical terms, an SSD and 16GB of RAM will usually matter more to daily responsiveness than selecting an i7 machine with a small or slow drive.

Is the OptiPlex 7060 Micro suitable for gaming?

The OptiPlex 7060 Micro is suitable for older PC games, lightweight indie games, some esports titles at reduced settings and older-system emulation. The integrated Intel UHD Graphics 630 is not a sensible solution for current demanding games, serious 3D work or GPU-accelerated creative workloads.

The Micro’s chassis is not designed around a conventional graphics-card upgrade path. Extra RAM and an SSD do not turn the computer into a modern gaming PC. Treat listings that use “gaming PC” language with caution unless the seller clearly identifies a supported graphics solution and demonstrates the relevant performance; the standard Micro configuration relies on integrated graphics.

Does the OptiPlex 7060 Micro support Windows 11?

Dell’s support page currently lists Windows 11 as supported for the OptiPlex 7060 Micro as of August 18, 2026. That listing updates the platform’s position beyond the original Windows 10-era documentation, but it does not make every used listing identical or automatically ready for an upgrade.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before buying, verify the exact processor, UEFI mode, TPM status, Secure Boot settings, BIOS version and Windows activation. A machine can have Windows installed without the seller providing a transferable licence or a clean activation state. Dell’s older setup documentation lists Windows 10 and Ubuntu-era operating-system options, illustrating why historical specification pages should not be confused with the current support listing.

  • Ask whether Windows is activated and whether activation is associated with the machine’s embedded OEM licence.
  • Check TPM and Secure Boot in BIOS or Windows before relying on Windows 11 compatibility.
  • Run Microsoft PC Health Check or Windows’ own compatibility checks on the exact machine where possible.
  • Confirm that the BIOS is accessible and does not require a corporate administrator password.
  • Do not confuse Dell hardware support with Microsoft security-update policy.

Former corporate fleet systems may retain BIOS passwords, asset-management settings or an organisation’s provisioning state. Ask for confirmation that the Service Tag and ownership status are clear and that the seller permits a clean Windows reinstallation.

Is the Micro easy to repair and upgrade?

The OptiPlex 7060 Micro is reasonably serviceable for its size, but “upgradeable” does not mean tower-like. IT Pro found the internal layout sensible and reported that the side panel comes off after loosening the rear thumbscrew and sliding the panel away.

Memory Two SO-DIMM slots; access may require removing the cooling assembly Buy laptop-style DDR4 SO-DIMMs, not desktop DIMMs
M.2 storage Practical replacement route, but protocol compatibility matters Do not assume every M.2 NVMe drive works in a system reviewed with M.2 SATA
2.5-inch SATA SSD Useful and relatively accessible Confirm the caddy, bracket and SATA cable are included
Wi-Fi/Bluetooth module Possible if the correct card and antenna are available Check for missing antenna hardware
CMOS battery Routine maintenance task Check the system for BIOS password or corporate lock issues
Fan and heatsink cleaning Important on older refurbished systems Listen for bearing noise and check temperatures under load
Discrete graphics No practical modern upgrade path Do not buy the Micro expecting gaming-GPU expansion

Processor replacement is technically less attractive than a memory or storage upgrade. The compatible CPU list, cooling capacity, BIOS support and used-market price all constrain the result. A pre-installed i7-8700T can be worthwhile for a virtualisation or development workload, but replacing an i5 after purchase may cost more than choosing a newer mini PC.

What business features does it provide?

The platform includes business-oriented features such as Gigabit Ethernet, a Kensington lock provision, legacy serial and PS/2 connectivity, and Intel vPro-capable processor options. The integrated Ethernet controller supports Intel Active Management Technology in suitable configurations, according to Dell’s documentation and the original review.

vPro and Active Management Technology are not guaranteed simply because the case says OptiPlex. Full remote-management capability depends on the exact processor, chipset, firmware, network configuration and the buyer’s management infrastructure. A small business should confirm the exact configuration before building a fleet around those features.

Serial and PS/2 ports can be valuable in specialist office, industrial or point-of-sale environments, while dual DisplayPort outputs suit a two-screen workstation. Those features can make the 7060 Micro more useful than a similarly priced consumer mini PC, even when a newer consumer machine has a faster processor.

What should you check before buying a used OptiPlex 7060 Micro?

Use the following checklist before paying for a refurbished or second-hand unit:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Exact chassis: Confirm that the machine is the Micro/MFF, not the larger SFF or an inaccurately labelled system.
  2. Processor: Prefer the i5-8500T; consider the i5-8400T for a lower price and the i7-8700T for heavier work when the premium is reasonable.
  3. Memory: Target 16GB, and check whether the modules are compatible DDR4 SO-DIMMs. Treat 8GB as an upgrade candidate rather than an ideal 2026 configuration.
  4. Storage: Confirm capacity and whether the installed M.2 drive is SATA or NVMe. A 256GB boot drive may be cramped.
  5. Second drive hardware: If the seller mentions a 2.5-inch bay, ask specifically about the caddy, bracket and SATA cable.
  6. Wireless hardware: Confirm Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and the antenna, rather than assuming they are present.
  7. Ports: Request a photograph of the actual rear panel if HDMI, VGA, a third display or a card reader matters.
  8. Power adapter: Confirm that a compatible genuine Dell adapter is included and that the computer does not show adapter warnings.
  9. BIOS condition: Ask whether BIOS access is unrestricted and whether an administrator password or corporate lock remains.
  10. Windows: Confirm activation and licence status. “Windows installed” is not enough.
  11. Physical condition: Check the thumbscrew, ventilation, USB ports, DisplayPorts, wireless antenna connectors and signs of liquid or impact damage.
  12. Thermals and noise: Ask whether the fan has been checked under sustained load and whether the system has been cleaned.
  13. Returns: Prefer a seller offering a clear return period, especially when the listing does not show the exact unit.

The original Dell documentation and service-manual collection is useful for checking the chassis, ports and service procedures before ordering parts.

Which OptiPlex 7060 Micro configuration is worth buying?

The strongest mainstream configuration is a Core i5-8500T with 16GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD. That combination avoids the most common bottlenecks without paying automatically for the platform’s fastest processor.

Configuration Recommendation Why
Core i5-8500T / 16GB / 512GB SSD Strongest mainstream target Balanced office performance, useful memory headroom and practical storage
Core i5-8500T / 8GB / 256GB SSD Acceptable if inexpensive Good base platform, but budget for memory and storage upgrades
Core i7-8700T / 16GB or 32GB Worth considering for a modest premium More useful for heavier multitasking, development and virtual machines
Core i3 / 8GB / SSD Only for light work at a low price Adequate for basic office tasks but less future headroom
Pentium or Celeron / small drive Generally avoid The low purchase price may not justify limited performance and upgrade cost
Unknown CPU / no SSD / missing adapter High-risk listing Too many essential costs and compatibility questions remain unresolved

The 2019 review’s £549 price should remain a historical reference only. It was the price of the reviewed system at launch, not a current 2026 used-market benchmark. A good deal depends on local currency, condition, warranty, included accessories and the price of a newer alternative.

How does the OptiPlex 7060 Micro compare with alternatives?

OptiPlex 7060 SFF

The OptiPlex 7060 SFF is the logical alternative when expansion matters more than minimum size. The SFF has more internal room, easier service access, four memory slots and a higher maximum memory capacity than the Micro, according to Dell’s specification sheet. The trade-off is a larger, heavier computer that is less convenient to mount behind a monitor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Newer business mini PCs

Later Dell OptiPlex Micro, Lenovo ThinkCentre Tiny and HP Pro Mini systems can offer newer CPU architectures, stronger integrated graphics, more likely Windows 11-era support and potentially better NVMe or USB-C support. The 7060 Micro can still win when its used price is substantially lower, replacement parts are easy to source and the buyer values the mature business ecosystem.

  • Windows 10 Pro (64 bit); Micro Tower; Intel Integrated UHD Graphics; USB Type-C

Consumer mini PCs

Newer consumer mini PCs often provide better performance per dollar, modern mobile processors, better integrated graphics and commonly included NVMe storage. The OptiPlex 7060 Micro remains more attractive for buyers who value business manageability, predictable service procedures, legacy ports, wired networking and a corporate desktop design. Consumer build quality, support and parts availability vary substantially by model.

Raspberry Pi and ARM mini computers

Raspberry Pi and other ARM mini computers can be excellent for lightweight Linux, home automation and network services, but they are not direct substitutes for an x86 Windows desktop. Legacy Windows software, desktop peripherals and x86 virtualisation can make the OptiPlex the more practical choice.

Who should buy the Dell OptiPlex 7060 Micro?

Use case Verdict Preferred configuration or condition
Home-office work Recommended when cheap i5-8500T, 16GB RAM and SSD; verify displays and Wi-Fi
Student computer Recommended for general study 16GB RAM and at least a practical SSD capacity
Small-business fleet Potentially good Consistent configuration, clear ownership, BIOS access and verified Windows licensing
Homelab or lightweight server Useful with limits Consider 16GB–32GB RAM and storage expansion; do not expect 10GbE or many internal drives
Media centre Possible Check the exact display outputs, audio arrangement, noise and remote-control needs
Retro gaming Good fit Older games and emulation; do not market it as a modern gaming PC
Modern gaming Not recommended Choose a system with a suitable discrete or substantially stronger integrated GPU
Heavy creative work Not recommended Choose a workstation or newer system with stronger CPU, GPU and expansion

The Dell OptiPlex 7060 Micro is a good inexpensive office computer when the buyer chooses the right specification and pays a used-PC price. The Core i5-8500T, 16GB of RAM and SSD combination is the sensible centre of the range. The Micro’s small chassis, dual displays, wired networking, business features and repairable storage make it more than disposable hardware, but its integrated graphics, two-slot memory ceiling and limited expansion are permanent constraints.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Buy the Micro when compactness and low cost are the priority. Choose the 7060 SFF when expansion matters, or a newer mini PC when the price difference is small enough to buy newer graphics, storage and software support. The best deal is not the cheapest listing; it is the listing with the correct CPU, enough memory, a healthy SSD, a compatible adapter and no hidden licensing or corporate-lock problem.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best OptiPlex 7060 Micro configuration to buy in 2026?

The best mainstream configuration is a Core i5-8500T with 16GB of DDR4 SO-DIMM memory and a 512GB SSD. An i7-8700T is worthwhile for heavier multitasking if the price premium is modest, while Celeron and Pentium models are best avoided unless they are exceptionally cheap.

Can the Dell OptiPlex 7060 Micro run Windows 11?

Dell’s current support page lists Windows 11 for the OptiPlex 7060 Micro as of August 18, 2026. The exact used machine should still be checked for TPM, Secure Boot, UEFI, BIOS access and Windows activation before purchase.

Can you add a graphics card to the OptiPlex 7060 Micro?

The OptiPlex 7060 Micro has no practical modern conventional discrete-GPU upgrade path. Intel UHD Graphics 630 is suitable for older or lightweight games, but the Micro is not appropriate for modern AAA gaming or serious 3D work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does the OptiPlex 7060 Micro use NVMe storage?

The IT Pro review sample used a 256GB M.2 SATA SSD, not an NVMe drive. Buyers must verify the exact motherboard and listing before purchasing an NVMe module because M.2 SATA and M.2 NVMe are different storage protocols.

Does every OptiPlex 7060 Micro include Wi-Fi, a VESA bracket and a 2.5-inch drive caddy?

No. Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, antennas, VESA hardware and 2.5-inch drive caddies can vary between used listings. Ask the seller to confirm each item rather than relying on stock photographs or the platform’s general specification.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The Dell OptiPlex 7060 Micro remains a worthwhile used PC for quiet, compact office work when it has a Core i5-8500T, 16GB of RAM and an SSD and is priced below newer mini PCs. It is not a modern gaming, workstation or expansion platform. Verify the exact ports, storage protocol, adapter, BIOS status, accessories and Windows activation before buying.
