Dell Inspiron 13 7000: At First Glance

Dell has been around for a while now and is known to deliver various kinds of excellent-performing laptops. In that regard, the brand released the Dell Inspiron 13 7000 in 2019.

The Dell Inspiron 13 7000 is a lightweight laptop that offers maximum performance and exceptional specs. Some of these specs include an 11th generation Intel Core i7 processor and an optional dedicated GPU.

However, with great features and specs comes a great price. Precisely, when I wrote this review article in March 2022, the Dell Inspiron 13 7000 had a starting price of $1,199.00.

You must be wondering if this laptop can actually deliver a performance worthy of its heavy price tag. Well, to find out, you have to read this review all the way through.

Dell Inspiron 13 7000: Design, Dimension, and Weight

In terms of design, the Dell Inspiron 13 7000 features a gorgeous design style. Moreover, based on its design aesthetic, the laptop stands out as one of Dell’s most attractive laptops to date.

Speaking of its design aesthetics, the Dell Inspiron 13 7000 offers multiple color options to choose from. These colors include silver, champagne pink, and charcoal black.

Apart from these color options, this laptop features an aluminum chassis with a matte finish. Due to its aluminum build, the laptop appears very solid and durable.

As a matter of fact, this laptop is so solid that you will hardly notice any creaking sound. Besides, the lid and base of the laptop are attached together by two robust and tight hinges with a silver finish.

Focusing more on the lid, it features a sleek “Dell” logo with a shiny texture/finish at the center. However, due to the tightness of the hinges, it might be difficult for you to open this lid with only one hand.

Moving on to the interior, the Dell Inspiron 13 7000 features a vivid 13.3-inch display with an FHD (1920 x 1080) resolution. Unlike the matte surface that we see most times, this laptop’s display has a glossy surface.

This glossy surface allows the display to deliver excellent color intensity and presentation as well as a good contrast ratio. However, the glossy surface tends to cause screen glares and eyestrain when you stare at the display for a long period of time.

On a positive note, the Dell Inspiron 13 7000’s display features an anti-glare coating. This anti-glare coating is an additional layer of the display that reduces reflection when the laptop is used in a bright environment.

As a result, using the Dell Inspiron 13 7000 outdoors should be less bothersome. Aside from that, this laptop’s display is made with an IPS panel which allows it to deliver wide viewing angles.

Hence, pictures and contents on the display will remain accurate when viewed from different angles. However, this laptop’s 13.3-inch FHD display is surrounded by thick matte-black bezels.

The bottom bezel appears to be thicker than the others because it features an HD webcam at the center. Performance-wise, this webcam is okay for casual video calls and regular skype.

However, it is not particularly ideal for taking pictures because the images it produces tend to appear grainy and blurry.

Moving on, seated on the deck of the Dell Inspiron 13 7000 is a chiclet-style keyboard. The keys of this keyboard are sufficiently large with adequate spacing.

Also, they are very responsive and offer a comfortable typing experience. Impressively, the keyboard is also backlit, meaning you will be able to type comfortably in dark environments.

Below this keyboard, the Dell Inspiron 13 7000 features a spacious touchpad with integrated click buttons. The surface of this touchpad is very smooth, allowing for easy navigation and seamless finger-gliding.

Besides, the touchpad supports Windows 10 multi-touch gestures such as pinch-to-zoom.

On the sides of the Inspiron 13 7000, Dell kept things minimal with the port selection. Specifically, on the left side, the laptop features a USB Type-A port, a USB Type-C (Thunderbolt) port, an HDMI port, and an audio jack.

Meanwhile, you will only find another USB Type-A port and an SD card reader on the right side of the laptop.

That said, the Dell Inspiron 13 7000 measures 340.1 x 197 x 14.98 mm (W x D x H) and weighs just 1050 g. With this amount of weight, this laptop has to be one of the lightest ever.

In fact, the laptop is lighter than most, if not all of its competitors. For example, the HP Envy x360 13-inch measures 306.7 x 214.6 x 14.9 mm and weighs 1300 g.

Conclusively, the Dell Inspiron 13 7000 features a very compact and light design with numerous color options. Also, the laptop comes with a responsive backlit keyboard and an incredible touchpad.

However, this laptop has a minimal amount of ports. Therefore, the Dell Inspiron 13 7000 deserves a rating of eight out of ten in this design review section.

Dell Inspiron 13 7000: Processor (CPU) Performance

The Dell Inspiron 13 7000 features a powerful Intel Core i7-1165G7 processor. In terms of speed, this processor has a base frequency of 2.80 GHz and a maximum frequency of 4.70 GHz.

Furthermore, the CPU is an 11th-generation quad-core processor with 2 MB cache memory. Therefore, with this processor, the Dell Inspiron 13 7000 should be able to handle both light and heavy computing operations easily.

To further assess the performance of this laptop’s processor, I will briefly discuss its result on the Cinebench R15 test. On a quick note, Cinebench R15 is a benchmark test that measures the processor performance of a computer.

Practically, the benchmark test does this by evaluating how fast the processor can be when its cores are in use. Thus, the Cinebench R15 carries out two tests – the single-core test and the multi-core test.

For clarity, the single-core test evaluates the processor’s performance when one of its cores is in use. Meanwhile, the multi-core test evaluates the performance of the processor when all of its cores are in use.

Moreover, the higher the scores on these Cinebench R15 tests, the better the performance of the computer’s processor. Thus, based on the test results, the Dell Inspiron 13 7000 scored 210 points on the single-core test.

On the other hand, the laptop scored 845 points on the multi-core test. Comparatively, this Dell laptop has a better performance than the ASUS ExpertBook B3 Flip, which also uses an Intel Core i7-1165G7 CPU.

Specifically, the ASUS ExpertBook B3 Flip scored 115 points and 553 points on the Cinebench R15 single-core and multi-core tests, respectively.

In summary, the Dell Inspiron 13 7000 comes with a powerful Intel Core i7 processor that offers great performance. Also, this laptop outmatched most of its competitors on a CPU benchmark test.

Therefore, the Dell Inspiron 13 7000 is worthy of a rating of nine out of ten in this processor review section.

Dell Inspiron 13 7000: Memory (RAM) Performance

For the memory, the Dell Inspiron 13 7000 comes with an onboard 8 GB LPDDR4X 4267 MHz RAM. As an “onboard” memory, this laptop’s memory is soldered directly on its motherboard.

Hence, the memory cannot be removed or upgraded. Although 8 GB RAM should be enough for most tasks, there are some intensive tasks that require a larger RAM size.

Thankfully, there is another model of the Dell Inspiron 13 7000 that offers 16 GB LPDDR4X 4267 MHz RAM. Hence, with this amount of memory, the laptop should be handling demanding tasks like video editing.

Also, the laptop should be able to multitask with ease. Speaking of multitasking, with 16 GB RAM, the Dell Inspiron 13 7000 will be to run about 20 Chrome tabs simultaneously without lagging.

To further ascertain the performance of this laptop with 16 GB RAM, I will quickly discuss its PCMark 10 test result. PCMark 10 is a benchmark test that estimates the memory performance of a computer by simulating everyday productivity tasks.

Furthermore, the higher the score on the benchmark test, the better the memory performance of the computer. So, according to the PCMark 10 test results, the Dell Inspiron 13 7000 scored 3703 points.

Comparatively, this Dell laptop performed better than all the laptops in its category. For example, the Acer Spin 3 SP314-54N was only able to score 3512 points on the PCMark 10 test.

Hence, the Dell Inspiron 13 7000 deserves a rating of nine out of ten in this memory performance review section.

Dell Inspiron 13 7000: Storage Options and Performance

In terms of storage, the Dell Inspiron 13 7000 comes with an M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD that offers a max storage capacity of 2 TB. Obviously, 2 TB of storage space should be enough for most users, including storage-hungry users.

Besides, if you ever need additional storage, the laptop offers a micro SDcard slot for storage expansion. Moreover, due to the fact that the laptop uses SSD, it should offer fast boot time, and exceptional read and write speed.

To prove this, I will now consider the laptop’s result on a CrystalDiskMark test. In brief, CrystalDiskMark is a benchmark test that assesses the performance of a computer’s storage drive.

It does this by evaluating the read and write speeds of the storage drive. For clarity, the read speed simply means the time it takes for a computer’s storage drive to open files.

On the other hand, write speed is how fast a computer’s storage drive can save a file. Having established that, it is essential to know that a high “MBps” value on the CrystalDiskMark test implies a fast read and write speed.

So, based on the test result, the Dell Inspiron 13 7000 recorded a sequential read speed of 901.3 MBps. Also, this laptop recorded a sequential write speed of 235.7 MBps.

Compared to most of its closest competitors that also use SSD, this Dell laptop performed better. For instance, the Acer Spin 5 SP513-54N-74V2 delivered a sequential read speed of 522.34 MBps and a sequential write speed of 309 MBps.

In summary, the Dell Inspiron 13 7000 features a sufficient SSD and a micro SD card slot for storage expansion. Besides, this laptop beat most of the laptops in its category on a storage benchmark test.

As a result, the Dell Inspiron 13 7000 scores a rating of nine out of ten in this storage review section.

Dell Inspiron 13 7000: Graphics Card Performance

To start with, the Dell Inspiron 13 7000 offers two graphics card options. The first GPU option is an integrated Intel Iris Xe Graphics.

In terms of speed, this GPU offers a base frequency of 400 MHz and a maximum frequency of 1300 MHz. Moreover, as an integrated graphics card, this GPU is embedded into the laptop’s processor.

Hence, in order to carry out graphics-related tasks, the GPU shares the system memory with the CPU. Thus, with the Intel Iris Xe Graphics, the Dell Inspiron 13 7000 won’t be able to efficiently handle graphics-demanding apps or games.

The second graphics card option is an NVIDIA GeForce MX350 graphics card. In terms of speed, this GPU offers a base frequency of 1354 MHz and a maximum frequency of 1468 MHz.

Furthermore, unlike the first GPU option, this graphics card is a dedicated GPU that features 2 GB DDR5 VRAM. Hence, with this GPU, the Dell Inspiron 13 7000 should be able to handle graphics-intensive tasks like video editing.

Also, the laptop will be able to run most title AAA games. For example, while playing F1 2021, the laptop delivered an impressive frame rate of 71 fps (frame per second).

To further verify the Dell Inspiron 13 7000’s performance with the dedicated GPU option, I will now examine its 3DMark 11 test result. 3DMark 11 is a benchmark test that evaluates the overall graphics rendering abilities of a computer.

Furthermore, a high score on this test indicates good GPU performance. Thus, based on the 3DMark 11 test results, the Dell Inspiron 13 7000 scored 6287 points.

In comparison, this Dell laptop outscored most of its closest competitors by a fine margin. For instance, the Acer Aspire 5 A517, which also comes with an NVIDIA GeForce MX350 GPU, scored 6038 points on the 3DMark 11 test.

All in all, the Dell Inspiron 13 7000 deserves a nine out of ten rating in this graphics performance review section. This rating is based on the fact that the laptop offers two graphics card options including a brilliant dedicated GPU.

Dell Inspiron 13 7000: Battery Life and Performance

For the battery, the Dell Inspiron 13 7000 is powered by a 4-cell 53 Wh lithium-ion battery. Dell claims that this laptop’s battery can last up to 8 hours.

To verify this claim, I will quickly discuss the laptop’s battery rundown test result. Briefly, this battery rundown test simply involves continuously surfing the web using a WIFI connection until the laptop dies.

Hence, at the end of the battery rundown test, the Dell Inspiron 13 7000 delivered a battery life of 6 hours and 45 minutes. Although this battery life is decent, it isn’t on par with Dell’s 8 hours claim.

Besides, when compared with other laptops in its category, this Dell laptop falls short. For example, the HP Envy x360 13-inch lasted 10 hours and 45 minutes on the same battery rundown test.

Therefore, I will rate the Dell Inspiron 13 7000 a seven out of ten in this battery review section.
