Dell G3 15 3579: At First Glance

As much as I would love to attribute the word ‘attractive’ to the Dell G3 15 3579, unfortunately, I can’t. It is fair to say that Dell G3 15 3579 is the most unattractive gaming laptop I have seen.

However, do not write it off yet as you may find out that its performance more than compensates for its unattractive looks!

This laptop completely ditches the common gaming laptop trends of odd logos and flashy features. In fact, looking at this laptop makes you feel it should be cheaper than it is.

However, the hardware specs offered by this laptop are reassuring – Dell G3 15 3579 is packed with an impressive range of hardware specs. Hang on while I unpack the specs for you!

Dell G3 15 3579: Design, Dimension, and Weight

If you haven’t seen the Dell G3 15 3579 before, I can bet you have a completely wrong pictorial imagination of the laptop. The Dell G3 15 3579 doesn’t look like most modern gaming laptops.

Instead of the usual trend of LED patterns, stripes, and large cooling grills, Dell opted for a moderate design. In fact, the Dell G3 15 3579 is a bit too modest for a modern gaming laptop.

You could easily mistake the laptop for a business laptop.

The Dell G3 15 3579 maintains the same color scheme throughout its entire body. Depending on the model you purchase, you either get a blue colored or black colored Dell G3 15 3579.

This review focuses on the blue model. While the lid of the laptop has a blue finish, the keyboard deck has a blue striped pattern.

In terms of build quality, the Dell G3 15 3579 is entirely built with plastic. However, despite its plastic build, the Dell G3 15 3579 feels slightly heavy.

It weighs 2530 g and measures 380 x 258 x 22.7 mm.

On a brighter note, this laptop is strong. The hinge tension is very firm but there’s little flex in the keyboard deck.

The keyboard itself is one of the best parts of the laptop. It has good spacing between its keys and it is very comfortable for typing.

Furthermore, the trackpad below the keyboard is large enough. However, the trackpad’s plastic build gives a weird texture that makes it too slippery.

For ports, the Dell G3 15 3579 offers 2 USB 3.1 Type-A ports, 1 HDMI 2.0 port, 1 Ethernet port, and a headphone jack.

In conclusion, this laptop’s design is too modest in comparison with other gaming laptops. Its overall design doesn’t leave much to be desired aside from its rigidity.

Therefore, I can only rate it a seven in this review.

Dell G3 15 3579: Processor (CPU) Performance

Dell offers two configurations for the Dell G3 15 3579’s processor. You can either buy this laptop with a 4-core Intel Core i5-8300HQ processor or a 6-core Intel Core i7-8750HQ processor.

The Core i5 processor has a base frequency of 2.30 GHz and a maximum frequency of 4.00 GHz. On the other hand, the Core i7 processor has a base frequency of 2.20 GHz and a maximum frequency of 4.10 GHz.

This review focuses on the Core i5-8300HQ processor. As the benchmark test discussed below will reveal, for a laptop equipped with this level of processor, the Dell G3 15 3579 performs excellently.

The Dell G3 15 3579 scored 13,230 in a Geekbench 4 test, surpassing the entry-level gaming laptop average of 11,610. Surprisingly, the Dell G3 15 3579 beat the ASUS TUF Gaming Laptop FX504 and the Lenovo Legion Y520 scores – they scored 12,040 and 13,040 respectively.

Hence, the Dell G3 15 3579 scores an eight in this review for its impressive CPU performance.

Dell G3 15 3579: Memory (RAM) Performance

Dell offers a wide range of configurations for this laptop’s RAM. You can buy Dell G3 15 3579 with a RAM capacity ranging from 4 GB up to 32 GB DDR4.

This laptop has two RAM slots on its motherboard.

With just 8 GB RAM, the Dell G3 15 3579 powered through 30 Chrome browser tabs – two of which were streaming 1080p YouTube videos. While this was ongoing, I also had a program running in the background.

Furthermore, the Dell G3 15 3579 scored 3050 on a PCMark 10 test. Unfortunately, it was unable to surpass the 3900 average score.

Nonetheless, I am happy to rate the laptop an eight in this review for its capability to multitask considerably well.

Dell G3 15 3579: Storage Options and Performance

The Dell G3 15 3579 offers two configurations for this laptop’s storage. You can purchase this laptop with a 1 TB 5400 RPM HDD or a PCIe M.2 SSD.

In addition to its primary storage, Dell offers a 2-in-1 MicroMedia SD card for storage expansion.

This review focuses on the 1 TB 5400 RPM HDD. Sadly, the Dell G3 15 3579 offered slow storage speeds when its storage performance was tested with this drive.

On a CrystalDiskMark test, the Dell G3 15 3579 offered a sequential read speed of 107.2 MBps and a sequential write speed of 53.5 MBps. Furthermore, the Dell G3 15 3579 copied a 4.97 GB multimedia file in 42 seconds at a very slow rate of 121 MBps.

Unfortunately, Dell G3 15 3579 did not surpass the 203 MBps category average copy rate.

In conclusion, the Dell G3 15 3579 scores a six in this review for its below-average storage speed.

Dell G3 15 3579: Graphics Card Performance

Like its processor and storage, Dell offers a range of configurations for this laptop’s graphics card.

You can buy the laptop with a dedicated NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 GPU, a dedicated NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti GPU, or a dedicated NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050, Max-Q GPU.

All three configurations come with a dedicated VRAM to boost the GPU performance. GTX 1050 and GTX 1050 Ti GPU come with a 4 GB GDDR5 VRAM while the Max-Q GPU comes with a 6 GB GDRR5 VRAM.

Furthermore, the GTX 1050 GPU has a base frequency of 1354 MHz and a boost frequency of 1493 MHz. However, GTX 1050 Ti GPU has a base frequency of 1392 MHz and a boost frequency of 1518 MHz.

On the other hand, the GTX 1050, Max-Q GPU has a base frequency of 1190 MHz and a boost frequency of 1328 MHz.

The Dell G3 15 3579 can play both light and intensive games. On a gaming test at high settings, the Dell G3 15 3579 played BioShock Infinite at 163 FPS, The Witcher 3 at 39 FPS, and Rise of the Tomb Raider at 39 FPS.

Overall, this laptop offers a good gaming experience. Therefore, it scores an eight in this review.

Dell G3 15 3579: Battery Life and Performance

The Dell G3 15 3579 ships with a 56 Wh non-removable battery.

This laptop’s battery life is impressive. On a battery life test, the Dell G3 15 3579 lasted 6 hours 40 minutes.

To give you some comparison, it lasted longer than the 4 hours 53 minutes category average. Comparatively, the Dell G3 15 3579 outlasted the ASUS TUF Gaming Laptop FX 504 that lasted just 4 hours.

Another interesting thing about this laptop’s battery life is its recharge time. The Dell G3 15 3579 charges from empty to full capacity in 2 hours like most regular laptops.

Considering the fact this laptop is a gaming laptop, it scores an eight in this review for its long battery life.
