My take on ASUS TUF Gaming FX505

The ASUS TUF gaming laptop is an attractive laptop. It is not too excessive in terms of its design. Moreover, it has some nice features like its display and ultra-thin bezel. However, it is a bit disappointing in some of its design choices, like its port selection and short battery life.

  • Sturdy build
  • Thin bezels
  • Backlit keyboard
  • Good performance

  • No SD card slot
  • Low Storage Upgradability Options
  • Weak speakers

ASUS TUF Gaming FX505: At First Glance

Gaming laptops normally feature either an Intel processor/Nvidia GPU combo or a complete AMD setup.

However, ASUS seems to be one of those few companies aiming for something different in this regard. It offers a unique combination of Ryzen processors with Nvidia graphics.

This laptop looks almost exactly like its previous version (ASUS TUF Gaming FX504). It first appears as though the bezels of the FX504 version has only been cut off a little to bring about the FX505.

ASUS TUF Gaming FX505: Design, Dimension, and Weight

The ASUS – FX505DD has an all-plastic build. However, its brushed finish makes it look metallic.

The laptop features nice indentations – in form of converging lines – on its lid. It has the ASUS logo at the center of the lid.

However, it feels sturdy despite its plastic build. Moreover, ASUS claims that this laptop has been put through a series of military class durability tests.

According to ASUS, TUF Gaming FX505 was put through the military-grade MIL-STD 810G certification. Therefore, it can withstand shock & vibration, temperature, humidity, and solar radiation.

Moving on to the laptop’s size, it is a bit large due to its bulky design. It measures 360.4 x 262.0 x 26.8 mm and weighs 2800 g.

On the left side of the laptop, there is a charging port, an RJ-45 LAN port, and an HDMI 2.0 port. The laptop’s left side also houses 2 USB 2.0 ports, 2 USB 3.1 ports, and a headphone jack.

On the right side, you have only a ventilation fan and a Kensington lock slot.

Furthermore, it features a full-sized backlit keyboard. It also has a smooth trackpad.

Overall, the laptop’s design does not disappoint. Therefore, it scores an eight in this review for its nice design.

ASUS TUF Gaming FX505: Processor (CPU) Performance

The ASUS – FX505DD gaming laptop is equipped with an AMD Ryzen 5 3550H processor. It is a 4-core processor with a base speed of 2.3 GHz and a max speed of 4.0 GHz.

This laptop offers an excellent CPU performance for its price. It is powerful enough to replace your desktop.

Moreover, the laptop’s CPU can be overclocked to improve its performance. Therefore, it offers outstanding performance when it is under a lot of pressure due to workload.

On the Cinebench R15 test, the laptop scored 145 in the single-core test. Also, it scored 706 in the multi-core test.

In conclusion, I rate ASUS TUF Gaming FX505 eight in this CPU review because it delivers well in daily computing tasks.

ASUS TUF Gaming FX505: Memory (RAM) Performance

The ASUS TUF Gaming FX505 comes with 8 GB of RAM. However, you can expand the memory size to about 32 GB.

This is possible due to a second vacant memory slot in its motherboard.

On a RAM performance test, ASUS TUF Gaming FX505 performed excellently without lagging. It didn’t stutter with about 18 Chrome tabs and an ongoing movie download.

Even with 2 of those browser tabs streaming high quality videos on YouTube, it still ran smoothly.

In conclusion, it scores an eight in this review for its ability to multitask.

ASUS TUF Gaming FX505: Storage Options & Performance

The ASUS – FX505DD gaming laptop offers a range of configurations for its storage options. You either get the PCle Gen 3 SSD or the 5400 RPM SATA HDD.

However, the maximum size this laptop supports is 1 TB.

The laptop’s SSD performance is what you would expect from a laptop of its kind of specs. Moreover, its storage capacity adequately meets up with its price.

Furthermore, it offers a decent sequential read and write speed. The laptop averaged a read speed of 1605.4 MBps and a write speed of 926.0 MBps in a CrystalDiskMark 6.0.0 test.

In conclusion, the ASUS TUF Gaming FX505 comes with enough storage that offers exceptional performance. Therefore, it scores an 8 for its storage speed and capacity.

ASUS TUF Gaming FX505: Graphics Card Performance

Like its storage, ASUS – FX505DD also offers a range of configurations for its graphics card.

However, despite the laptop’s combination of the AMD Ryzen 5 CPU and the Nvidia graphics, it still doesn’t completely satisfy gaming needs. Nonetheless, the gaming experience on the laptop is enjoyable.

On gaming performance tests, it ran Odyssey (1080p ULTRA) at a frame rate of 24 FPS. Additionally, it ran Anthem (1080p ULTRA) at 45 FPS.

The ASUS TUF Gaming FX505 also ran Battlefield V (1080p ULTRA) at 40 FPS. Lastly, it ran The Witcher 3 (1080p ULTRA) at 55 FPS.

However, you will get much better frame rates if you switch the gaming settings to medium. Therefore, it scores a 7 for its not-so-great graphics card performance.

ASUS TUF Gaming FX505: Battery Life and Performance

The ASUS – FX505DD gaming laptop is powered by a 3-Cell, 48 Wh polymer battery. The laptop’s battery life is not impressive – you get 3 hours out of the laptop with normal browsing.

However, with more intensive tasks like gaming, it lasts for just 1 hour 30 minutes.

If you plan to play games, you might want to plug the laptop is into a power outlet. Moreover, running down the laptop’s battery kicks in the Nvidia power save mode, affecting its performance.

The ASUS TUF Gaming FX505 scores a 5 in this review because of its poor battery life.

The ASUS – FX505DD gaming laptop is an enticing entry laptop. Considering its price tag, it is a great and affordable laptop.

However, the laptop’s hardware is not built to comfortably run AAA titles. Nevertheless, it will work just fine for non-hardcore gamers.
