A dedicated GPU is usually the better choice for demanding games, higher resolutions, and higher graphics settings. Integrated graphics can still run some games and are typically more power-efficient, less expensive, and better suited to compact or battery-conscious computers. The right choice depends on the specific GPU, the games you play, and the resolution and settings you want—not just whether the graphics are integrated or dedicated.
Integrated vs. dedicated graphics at a glance
| Factor | Integrated graphics | Dedicated graphics |
|---|---|---|
| Gaming | Can handle some games; check the exact GPU against each game’s requirements. | Generally better suited to demanding graphics workloads, including gaming. |
| Memory | Shares system memory. How much is allocated depends on the system. | Uses dedicated video memory on the graphics card. |
| Power and portability | Usually more power-efficient and can support thinner, lighter laptops. | Uses more power. Some laptops pair it with integrated graphics and switch between them by task. |
| Cost | Normally less expensive as a graphics option. | Normally more expensive; compare the total computer cost, not just the GPU label. |
| Upgrades | Part of the system; performance depends on the processor and platform. | A desktop can often accept an add-in card if compatible. Laptop GPU upgrades are generally limited. |
Microsoft Support summarizes the broad trade-off: “Integrated GPUs are normally less powerful than discrete GPUs but are more power-efficient.” That is a general distinction, not a guarantee about every pair of chips. A particular integrated GPU may suit a game better than an entry-level dedicated GPU, so check the exact models and credible benchmarks.
Can integrated graphics run games?
Yes. Integrated graphics can run some games, but results vary with the GPU, processor, system memory, game, resolution, and graphics settings. Microsoft includes “some gaming” among integrated GPU uses, while Intel advises comparing the computer’s CPU and GPU with the requirements for the games you want to play.
Integrated graphics are a reasonable fit when you play less demanding titles, accept lower resolution or settings where needed, and value battery life, portability, or a lower system cost. For demanding games or a goal of higher resolution and settings, a dedicated GPU is generally the stronger starting point. Neither category guarantees a particular frame rate.

How to choose for the games you play
- List the games you care about. Check each developer’s published minimum and recommended system requirements.
- Set your target resolution and graphics settings. The demands rise with resolution and quality settings. Intel notes that 4K renders four times as many pixels as 1080p; that describes pixel count, not a promised performance multiplier.
- Compare the exact CPU and GPU configuration. For a laptop, compare the full configuration rather than relying on a GPU family name alone.
- Look for credible benchmarks of the specific hardware. Favor results for the games and settings you care about, and check that the tested system is comparable. General GPU labels cannot establish a model-to-model performance result.
- Include power and portability in the decision. A dedicated GPU may better suit graphics-heavy play, while an integrated GPU’s lower power use can matter more for a thin laptop or longer battery life.
Intel’s gaming laptop buying guide also recommends comparing the CPU, GPU, game requirements, resolution, settings, and benchmarks.
What shared memory means for gaming
Integrated graphics do not have video memory on a separate graphics card. Instead, they use some of the computer’s system memory. AMD describes this arrangement as Unified Memory Architecture; Intel says its integrated GPU uses shared memory allocated automatically according to system factors.

That means a memory figure shown in a system utility should not automatically be read as proof that an integrated GPU has physical VRAM equivalent to a dedicated card’s memory. Reporting and allocation vary by system. VRAM needs also depend on the game, resolution, and settings; Intel notes that higher resolutions such as 1440p or 4K at high settings require sufficient VRAM for smooth play.
On AMD desktop systems with integrated graphics, AMD recommends leaving the UMA frame buffer on Auto for most workloads. Manually increasing it may help in some cases, but can affect overall system performance when RAM is limited. These instructions apply to the AMD desktop systems covered by its UMA frame buffer guidance, not every computer. Intel likewise notes that BIOS controls for integrated graphics memory are not available on all systems; see its integrated graphics memory guidance.

How GPU choice works in laptops
A laptop may include both an integrated GPU and a dedicated GPU. The integrated GPU can handle lighter graphics tasks, while the dedicated GPU handles heavier work; the system may switch between them to balance performance and power efficiency. This lets a laptop draw on dedicated graphics when needed without requiring it for every task, although the dedicated GPU’s higher power use remains a trade-off for battery life.
When comparing gaming laptops, check the exact GPU and CPU in the configuration you plan to buy, then compare them with your games’ requirements and target resolution. The broad category alone does not tell you how a particular laptop will perform.

Can you add a dedicated GPU later?
Desktop PCs
A desktop with integrated graphics can generally be upgraded with a dedicated graphics card, provided the system is compatible. Check the card, case clearance, motherboard, and power supply before buying. Intel says that, by default in the systems covered by its support guidance, adding a card turns off the CPU’s onboard graphics, replacing it rather than combining its performance. Some systems allow both to be enabled in BIOS. See Intel’s guidance on adding a dedicated graphics card, last reviewed September 5, 2024.
Laptops
Adding or replacing a laptop GPU is generally not possible because of technical limitations. If you need dedicated graphics for games, choose a laptop configuration that includes the GPU you want rather than assuming it can be upgraded later.
