Neither is better for every player. Self-hosting is a good fit if you have suitable equipment, want direct control, and are willing to handle updates, security, backups, and network availability. Managed hosting is often a better fit if you want help with infrastructure and setup and are willing to pay recurring charges and depend on a provider. The right choice starts with the specific game’s server requirements, then weighs administration, player location, reliability needs, and total cost.

What does “dedicated game server” mean?

A dedicated server is a server process that runs separately from the players’ game clients. It does not necessarily mean a physical computer is reserved exclusively for your game or account. That distinction matters: you can run a dedicated server process on a computer at home, on cloud infrastructure, or through a managed hosting service.

Epic Games’ Unreal Engine documentation contrasts a dedicated server with a listen server. In a listen-server setup, one player’s client also hosts the game; a dedicated server runs headlessly, while players connect remotely. Epic describes listen servers as potentially suitable for casual co-op and dedicated servers as ideal for large-scale or competitive games. Those are Unreal Engine explanations, not universal rules for every game. The game’s own documentation determines which modes it supports and what it needs.

Hosting arrangement is a separate decision from server type. Unity’s documentation distinguishes player self-hosting, on-premises hosting, cloud hosting, and managed service providers. In practical terms, ask two questions: does the game offer a dedicated-server option, and who will provide and operate the machine or infrastructure it runs on?

What is the difference between self-hosting and managed hosting?

With self-hosting, you operate the server on equipment you control, often at home. With managed hosting, a provider supplies some or all of the infrastructure and may offer tools for setup, administration, logging, or scaling. The label “managed” does not guarantee that every task is handled for you, so check what a specific plan includes.

Decision factor Self-hosting Managed hosting or cloud
Equipment and infrastructure You supply and maintain the computer and local setup. A provider supplies or operates infrastructure; the exact division of responsibility varies by service.
Setup and ongoing administration You install, configure, update, secure, troubleshoot, and back up the server. Some infrastructure work may be simplified or handled by the provider; you may still configure the environment and maintain the game.
Control Direct access to your machine, files, and configuration. Some infrastructure may be abstracted, with plan or platform limits to verify.
Cost pattern Potentially avoids a recurring hosting bill, but brings equipment, electricity, maintenance, network, backup, and time costs. Usually involves recurring or usage-based charges; pricing and billing rules differ by provider.
Scaling and location Expansion and geographic reach are your responsibility and may require additional equipment or locations. Some cloud services offer geographic choices and make it easier to scale resources up or down.
Backups and recovery You need to establish and test your own backup and restore process unless you add a separate service. Do not assume backups or recovery are included; confirm the service’s terms and features.
Availability Depends on your equipment, home network, power, and maintenance. Depends on the provider’s service and your configuration; confirm any applicable terms rather than assuming a particular uptime.

The comparison is about who carries the work and what trade-offs follow, not a universal guarantee of lower cost, better performance, or higher uptime. Unity’s hosting guidance identifies infrastructure burden, scaling, provider dependence, visibility, and potential long-run cost as considerations, but it does not establish a universal winner for a particular game or setup.

When does self-hosting make sense?

Self-hosting can make sense when control matters more than convenience and you are prepared to operate the server. It is most practical when the game supports a server setup you can run, the available hardware can handle the expected player load, and your home network and availability needs are compatible with how you plan to play.

Reasons to self-host

  • Direct control: You manage the machine, files, and configuration rather than relying on a provider’s interface or plan limits.
  • Avoiding a hosting subscription: You may avoid recurring cloud or managed-hosting charges if suitable equipment is already available. That does not make operation free: electricity, maintenance, connectivity, backups, and your time still count.
  • A hands-on setup: You can choose how to configure and maintain the environment, within the requirements and rules of the game.
  • Keeping operations local: If your group’s needs and network conditions suit a home setup, you may not need the additional infrastructure of a hosting service.

Responsibilities you take on

  • Hardware: Select, operate, and maintain a machine that meets the game’s requirements and expected workload. A home server computer is an option if your existing equipment is unsuitable, not a universal requirement.
  • Installation and updates: Set up the server software, configure it, and keep it compatible with the game version and any mods you use.
  • Security: Manage access, apply updates, and secure the system and its network exposure.
  • Backups and recovery: Protect world or configuration files and know how to restore them. Extra backup storage may be useful if your recovery plan requires it.
  • Connectivity and availability: The server relies on your home equipment and network. Consider whether it must stay available when the household network, computer, or power is unavailable.
  • Problem-solving: Diagnose issues with the machine, configuration, updates, and connection instead of relying on a hosting provider to handle the infrastructure side.

Unity notes that on-premises hosting can require substantial upfront time, money, and resources, and that self-hosters may need to build backup features themselves. A home setup can give you control, but it also makes you the person responsible when something needs attention.

When is managed game server hosting a better fit?

Managed hosting is a better fit when reducing infrastructure work is more important to you than operating every part of the setup yourself. It can also be attractive when you need provider infrastructure, geographic options, or a simpler path to scaling, provided the service supports your game and the features you need.

What a provider may simplify

  • Access to a server environment without buying and maintaining the physical machine yourself.
  • Setup or administration tools that reduce some routine infrastructure work.
  • Logging or scaling features, depending on the service.
  • Geographic choices that may better suit players who are not all near the host’s home network.

These are potential benefits, not promises that every host provides the same features. The game, supported versions and mods, selected region, plan limits, and included administrative tools can differ. A provider may handle infrastructure while leaving game configuration, software maintenance, and other operating tasks to you.

What you trade away

  • Recurring or usage-based charges: You pay according to the provider’s pricing model. Read how charges are calculated and when they begin and end.
  • Provider dependence: Your setup relies on the provider’s service, policies, and supported features.
  • Less visibility or control: Managed interfaces can abstract parts of the underlying system, and plans may restrict what you can change.
  • Terms to verify: Confirm backups, recovery, cancellation, supported game versions, mod support, regions, and capacity limits rather than assuming they are included.

Amazon GameLift Servers illustrates why billing terms need to be checked service by service: AWS says its billing begins when capacity is allocated and the server binary launches, and ends when instances stop. That is an AWS-specific billing model for its managed game-server capability, not a general rule for other hosting services.

How should you compare total cost?

There is no evidence-based universal price winner without a specific game, workload, configuration, region, and current quote. Compare the costs you would actually incur over the period you expect to host, including work and infrastructure that may not appear on a monthly plan price.

Cost to account for Self-hosting Managed hosting or cloud
Hardware Purchase or use of equipment, plus replacement or repair when needed. Usually reflected in the service’s charges; confirm what capacity the plan provides.
Electricity and physical upkeep Relevant when you run your own equipment. Typically part of the provider’s infrastructure model, but check the service’s pricing.
Hosting charges May avoid a hosting subscription, depending on your setup. Recurring or usage-based charges vary by provider and service.
Network and geography Consider the cost and capability of your own connection and any changes needed. Check region availability and whether the pricing changes with location or usage.
Backups and recovery Include storage and the time needed to create and test your own process. Confirm whether backup and restore features are included or separately charged.
Time and maintenance Budget your own time for setup, patching, troubleshooting, and recovery. Some infrastructure work may be reduced, but game and environment responsibilities may remain.

Unity notes that cloud hosting can cost more over the long run than comparable on-premises operation, while also noting that on-premises hosting has upfront and ongoing costs. That observation is not a price comparison for your game. To make one, list your expected player load and hours of operation, price the hardware and operating costs you would incur, and compare them with current quotes for a provider’s matching region and capacity.

How do you choose the right option for your game?

Start with compatibility, then assess who will do the work and where players will connect from. A short check before buying hardware or paying for a plan can prevent choosing an option that does not support the game version, mods, or capacity you need.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm dedicated-server support. Check the game’s official documentation for whether it supports a separate dedicated server process, and whether that process is available for your edition or platform.
  2. Check requirements and restrictions. Look for CPU, memory, storage, operating-system, network-port, player-capacity, and mod requirements. Requirements vary by game and can change between software versions. Foundry’s dedicated-server documentation, for example, says memory needs depend on the game system and modules in use; that is specific to Foundry, not a general specification for all games.
  3. Decide who will administer it. Write down who will install and update the server, handle configuration, secure access, troubleshoot problems, and manage backups. If you do not want those tasks, investigate what a provider actually takes on.
  4. Consider player location and availability. If players are spread out geographically, check whether a provider offers a suitable region. Unity notes that broad geographic coverage with an on-premises approach may require multiple data centers, while cloud providers may offer geographically distributed locations. For a home server, account for your household connection and whether the machine can stay available when you need it.
  5. Define a recovery plan. Identify which world and configuration files matter, where copies will be stored, and how you would restore them. Ask a prospective provider exactly what its backup and recovery terms cover.
  6. Compare full costs and limits. Use a matching game version, approximate player load, operating schedule, and region when comparing a home setup with provider quotes. Include hardware, electricity, time, and backups on the self-hosting side; inspect usage rules, included features, and billing triggers on the provider side.
  7. Check game-specific account or slot rules. Some games impose licensing or capacity conditions that are separate from the host’s technical plan. For example, Cfx.re says FiveM servers with more than 48 slots require FiveM Element Club Argentum or above. This is a FiveM-specific rule, not a general limit for dedicated game servers.

What should you verify before choosing a hosting provider?

Do not compare providers by a plan name or headline capacity alone. Confirm that the offer matches the game and the way you intend to run it, then check the operational details that determine your control, cost, and ability to recover.

  • Game and version support: Does the service support the exact game and server version you need?
  • Mods and configuration: Can you install the mods and change the settings your group relies on?
  • Region: Is there a location appropriate for your players, and does it affect the price?
  • Capacity and plan limits: What player capacity and resource limits apply, and are there separate game-specific slot rules?
  • Administration: Which tasks does the provider perform, and which remain yours?
  • Backups and restores: Are they included, how are they configured, and what does the service say about restoring files?
  • Billing: Is the charge recurring, usage-based, or both? When does billing begin and stop?
  • Cancellation and data access: How do you cancel, and can you retrieve the files you need if you leave?

A hosted server is not automatically configured, patched, backed up, or secured in every way you need. Treat each of those as a separate question to answer from the provider’s current terms.

Which option should you choose?

Choose self-hosting if you value hands-on control, have or can provide suitable equipment, and accept ongoing responsibility for maintenance, security, backups, and connectivity. Choose managed hosting if reducing infrastructure work, accessing provider features, or serving players from a suitable region matters more than avoiding a recurring charge. If neither description settles it, compare both against the specific game’s requirements and a realistic estimate of your time and operating costs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no general price or performance result that applies to every game server. The best choice is the one that supports the game and player experience you need without leaving you with costs, operating duties, or plan limits you did not expect.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I move a game server from my home computer to a hosting provider later?

Often, a move depends on whether the game lets you transfer its world, save, and configuration files and whether the destination supports the same game version and mods. Before choosing either setup, check the game’s file-transfer guidance and confirm that a provider allows you to retrieve or upload the files you need.

Does a dedicated server guarantee lower lag for every player?

No. The server model alone does not establish how responsive a game will feel; the server’s location, network paths, player connections, and game implementation all matter. Check the game’s guidance and consider where the players are located when choosing a home or provider-hosted setup.

Can I run a dedicated server and play the game on the same computer?

That depends on the game’s server requirements and the computer’s available resources while both processes are running. Check the game’s official requirements for the server and client, and account for the combined workload rather than treating the server requirement as the whole machine requirement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need a static IP address to host a game server at home?

The material available here does not establish one networking requirement that applies to every game. Check the chosen game’s official server instructions and your internet provider’s terms for the connection method and address behavior the setup requires.
