The Nintendo Switch 2 Edition is an enhanced version of the same Darkest Dungeon II, not a new campaign or sequel. Nintendo lists 1080p handheld output, 1440p TV output, a frame-rate target of up to 60 FPS, fast driving and fast combat options, and optional Joy-Con 2 mouse support. The original Switch release still runs on Nintendo Switch 2 as original Switch software, but it does not automatically receive those Edition-specific enhancements.
For a new Switch 2 owner, the Edition is the straightforward choice if sharper output, smoother motion, faster travel and combat, or mouse-style pointing matter to you. Existing owners can buy an upgrade pack instead of purchasing the game again. Players who remain on the original Nintendo Switch should not expect the Switch 2 features to become available there.
What is different about the Darkest Dungeon II Nintendo Switch 2 Edition?
The Switch 2 Edition adds a technical and control upgrade layer to the existing game. The product listings describe the same roguelike journey, Confessions structure, Affinity System, hero origin stories, stagecoach travel and Kingdoms strategic campaign, while Nintendo highlights four Edition-specific improvements: higher published display targets, up to 60 FPS, speed controls and Joy-Con 2 mouse support.
That distinction matters when deciding whether to buy again or upgrade. You are paying for the Switch 2 presentation and convenience features, not for a separate story campaign. The original Switch release remains a legitimate way to play Darkest Dungeon II, but it behaves as the Switch version even when launched on a Switch 2 console.

How do the Switch 2 and original Switch versions compare?
The table summarizes the documented differences. “Up to 60 FPS” is Nintendo’s published target; it is not a guarantee that every scene is locked at that rate.
| Feature | Switch 2 Edition | Original Switch version |
|---|---|---|
| Handheld resolution | 1080p listed by Nintendo | The original listing does not specify the Switch 2 Edition resolution |
| TV resolution | 1440p listed by Nintendo | Runs as original Switch software; no Edition specification applies |

What resolution and frame rate does the Switch 2 Edition support?
Nintendo’s product page lists 1080p in handheld mode and 1440p in TV mode, with a frame-rate target of up to 60 FPS. Those are the clearest visual reasons to choose the Edition on a Switch 2: handheld play has a higher stated output target, and TV play can use a higher resolution target than the original listing provides.
The wording is important. “Up to 60 FPS” describes the published ceiling or target, not a promise that every battle, menu transition or stagecoach sequence maintains a locked 60 FPS. No independent frame-rate, resolution-quality or loading-time benchmark is cited here, so claims about sustained performance, exact frame pacing or a specific improvement over the original release would go beyond the available evidence.

The result depends on the connected display and the console’s output settings. Treat 1080p handheld and 1440p TV as Nintendo’s Edition specifications rather than as a guarantee about the final image on every screen.
Does the Edition add faster driving and combat?
Yes. Nintendo lists fast driving and fast combat options for the Switch 2 Edition. These are quality-of-life controls aimed at reducing waiting during stagecoach travel and repeated combat animations.
The available listings do not state the exact speed multipliers, whether every animation is accelerated, or how each option is mapped in the interface. You should therefore read the feature as an optional faster-play setting, not as a documented “two-times speed” or “four-times speed” mode. If you enjoy seeing every animation at its normal pace, you can continue to play without relying on the speed options; if travel and routine encounters feel slow, the Edition gives you a way to shorten those stretches.

How does Joy-Con 2 mouse support work?
Joy-Con 2 mouse support is an optional Switch 2 input feature listed by Nintendo. It gives the Edition an additional pointing method, which may appeal to players who prefer cursor-like control for menus or targeting.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallYou do not need a separate mouse accessory to own the game, and the software remains listed as single-system software with TV, tabletop and handheld modes. The original Switch version does not gain this Edition-specific input feature simply because it is launched on a Switch 2. Nintendo’s listing also does not document a required mouse-control layout or claim that every action must be performed with the pointer, so treat mouse input as an alternative rather than a replacement for standard controls.
Is Kingdoms exclusive to the Switch 2 Edition?
No evidence in the product pages shows Kingdoms as a Switch 2-only campaign. Nintendo describes Kingdoms as an entirely new stand-alone strategic campaign mode available in Darkest Dungeon II, and the Switch 2 listing names three adventure modules: Hunger of the Beast Clan, Secrets of the Coven and Curse of the Court.
The original and Switch 2 product descriptions both present the broader Darkest Dungeon II content rather than a Switch 2-exclusive story. The practical difference is therefore how the game runs, not access to a separate Kingdoms narrative. If a particular storefront bundles content differently, read that listing carefully; the Edition upgrade itself is described as a technical upgrade rather than a new paid campaign.
Are the listed DLC packs included in the Switch 2 upgrade?
The official pages associate The Binding Blade, Inhuman Bondage, Infernal Supporter Pack and Hero Origin Pack with Darkest Dungeon II. They do not present the Switch 2 technical upgrade as a new DLC campaign or state that every one of those packs is automatically included in the upgrade price.
In practical terms, treat the game upgrade and paid DLC as separate products unless the storefront explicitly identifies a bundle. Check the exact edition description for your region before paying, especially if you already own one or more add-ons. The documented Switch 2 changes are resolution, frame-rate target, speed controls and mouse support, not an additional story chapter.

Can an existing physical or digital Switch copy be upgraded?
Yes. Nintendo’s upgrade-pack page says the original Darkest Dungeon II game is required and allows owners of a physical or digital Switch copy to purchase the upgrade pack. The original software remains the prerequisite; the upgrade pack is not a standalone copy for someone who does not own the game.
Digital owners
- Make sure the Nintendo Account that owns Darkest Dungeon II is being used on the Switch 2.
- Open the Nintendo eShop listing for Darkest Dungeon II or the separately listed upgrade pack.
- Confirm that the account and original purchase qualify, then purchase and download the upgrade data.
- Launch the Switch 2 Edition and verify that the Edition features appear in the product or software information.
Physical-card owners
- Insert the original Darkest Dungeon II Switch game card into the Switch 2.
- Use the eShop upgrade-pack listing while the qualifying game is available to the console.
- Complete the purchase and download the upgrade data.
- Keep the game card available when you play if the original physical copy is required to authenticate the software.
The exact menu labels and eligibility checks can vary by region and by whether you own a physical or digital copy. Nintendo’s general support guidance says Switch 2 Edition games function as the Switch version on an original Nintendo Switch, so an upgrade does not turn the older console into a Switch 2 system.
How much does the full Edition or upgrade pack cost?
Contemporaneous launch reports listed the full Switch 2 Edition at $42.98 and the upgrade pack at $2.99 in the reported market. Those figures are examples from Nintendo Life and RPGamer coverage, not a universal current price. Regional currency conversion, tax, discounts, publisher changes and storefront timing can produce a different amount.
The buying decision is therefore straightforward in principle:
- New Switch 2 buyers: compare the current price of the full Edition with the value of the higher display targets, faster options and mouse support. Buying the Edition avoids paying for the original release first.
- Existing Switch owners: check the current upgrade-pack price. A low-cost upgrade can be attractive if you regularly play on Switch 2 and care about the technical improvements.
- Players staying on original Switch: buying the Switch 2 Edition does not provide its enhancements on the older console. Nintendo says Switch 2 Edition software functions as the Switch version there.
The official US product page used for this information did not expose a stable price in its text, so do not treat the reported $42.98 and $2.99 as a guaranteed current US checkout total. Verify the amount shown by your own Nintendo eShop before purchasing.
How much storage does each version use?
Nintendo’s storefront metadata displays 3.4 GB for the original Switch listing, 8.8 GB for the Switch 2 Edition and 1.3 GB for the separate upgrade pack. The Edition’s displayed figure is therefore substantially larger than the original listing, while the upgrade download is smaller than a complete replacement installation.

These are storefront figures, not immutable final installed sizes. Patches, language data, regional packaging and system storage calculations can change what your console reports. Leave more free space than the headline number if you are downloading the Edition and expect future updates, and check the eShop’s current software-information panel before starting a download.
What does the original Switch version do when played on Switch 2?
The original copy remains playable on Switch 2 as original Switch software. Compatibility does not automatically convert it into the Switch 2 Edition, so the higher published resolution targets, up-to-60-FPS target, fast driving, fast combat and Joy-Con 2 mouse support are not added unless you obtain the upgrade.
This is the key distinction between backward compatibility and an upgrade. You can continue using a copy you already own, but the console is running the version you purchased. If those Edition features are unimportant to you, keeping the original version avoids another transaction; if they are the reason you bought a Switch 2, the upgrade is the route Nintendo provides.

Choose the Switch 2 Edition if you are buying Darkest Dungeon II for the first time and own a Switch 2. It is the only version in the comparison with Nintendo’s listed 1080p handheld output, 1440p TV output, up-to-60-FPS target, speed controls and Joy-Con 2 mouse support.
Choose the upgrade pack if you already own the Switch release and mostly play on Switch 2. You keep the same game and gain the Edition’s technical layer without purchasing the complete game again, subject to Nintendo’s eligibility requirements and your region’s price.

For an existing owner who is undecided, use this checklist:
- Do you play primarily in handheld mode and want the listed 1080p target?
- Do you connect the console to a 1440p-capable television?
- Would faster stagecoach travel or combat animations improve your routine sessions?
- Would optional Joy-Con 2 mouse input suit how you manage menus or targets?
- Is the current upgrade price lower than the value you place on those improvements?
- Do you have enough storage for the 1.3 GB upgrade download and subsequent patches?
If most answers are yes, the upgrade has a clear practical case. The product pages do not identify a Switch 2-exclusive campaign that would require the Edition for access to the Confessions, Affinity System, hero origins, stagecoach journey or Kingdoms.
What should you not assume about the Switch 2 Edition?
- Do not assume a locked 60 FPS. Nintendo publishes “up to 60 FPS”; no independent test in the available evidence confirms a constant rate in every scene.
- Do not assume a specific loading-time reduction. The product information does not provide a measured improvement.
- Do not assume native 1440p image quality in every situation. The listing gives a TV output specification, not an independent analysis of resolution scaling or image reconstruction.
- Do not assume Kingdoms is Switch 2-exclusive. The pages present it as part of the broader Darkest Dungeon II offering.
- Do not assume every DLC pack is bundled. Confirm the contents of your regional storefront listing.
- Do not assume the upgrade works without the original game. Nintendo lists Darkest Dungeon II as the upgrade prerequisite.
Bottom line: is the upgrade worth it?
The Switch 2 Edition is worthwhile when you want a better technical presentation or faster controls, not because it contains a different Darkest Dungeon II campaign. New Switch 2 buyers should generally select the Edition. Existing owners should compare the current upgrade-pack price with how much they value the 1080p handheld and 1440p TV targets, up-to-60-FPS target, fast driving, fast combat and optional mouse input. Owners who continue playing on the original Switch can keep the original release, because the Edition enhancements require Switch 2 hardware.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the original Switch copy receive 60 FPS automatically on Nintendo Switch 2?
No. Nintendo treats it as the original Switch software, so it does not automatically gain the Switch 2 Edition’s up-to-60-FPS target. You need the eligible upgrade path to access the Edition features.
Can I buy the upgrade pack without owning Darkest Dungeon II?
Nintendo lists the original game as a prerequisite for the upgrade pack. If you do not own the physical or digital Switch release, purchase the complete Edition instead.
Will the Switch 2 Edition work on an original Nintendo Switch?
Nintendo’s compatibility guidance says Switch 2 Edition games function as the Switch version on an original Switch. The Edition-specific enhancements therefore require Switch 2 hardware.
Is Joy-Con 2 required to play Darkest Dungeon II on Switch 2?
No. Joy-Con 2 mouse support is an optional input feature. The game remains playable in handheld, tabletop and TV modes with standard controls.

Why is the Switch 2 Edition download listed as larger?
Nintendo’s storefront metadata lists 8.8 GB for the Edition versus 3.4 GB for the original Switch version. Those are storefront figures that can change with patches and regional data, so check the current eShop requirement before downloading.
