Dark Messiah of Might & Magic: Community Edition is a community-built mod planned for Steam in 2026. It is not a standalone remake: you must own the original PC game. The project aims to combine the classic release with material from the Xbox version, restore cut content, add console-exclusive maps and modes, modernize multiplayer through Steamworks, and introduce campaign co-op. Steam currently lists it as “not yet available,” with no exact launch day announced.
What is Dark Messiah: Community Edition?
Community Edition is an upgrade project for the 2006 first-person action game, built by wiltOS Technologies and collaborators with approval from the rights holders and support from Valve. Its stated goal is to bring disparate versions and years of community work into one maintainable Steam release rather than replace the original game with a separate commercial product.
The Steam listing explicitly describes it as a community-made mod and says ownership of Dark Messiah of Might & Magic is required. The original game remains the essential purchase; Community Edition is an additional project that uses it as the base.
When is Dark Messiah: Community Edition coming to Steam?
Steam gives the project a planned release year of 2026. The store page says it is not yet available and does not provide a month or day, so any more precise date would be speculation. The dedicated listing opened for wishlisting on 26–27 October 2026.

The original game launched on Steam on 25 October 2006. That makes Community Edition a new release built around a roughly 20-year-old game, but its schedule remains subject to development and platform approval.
What new content does it add?
The project advertises a broader campaign and multiplayer package than the original PC release. Some features are restorations or ports, while others are new systems created for the edition.
Restored and combined material

- Console-exclusive maps and modes from Dark Messiah: Elements are intended to appear on PC.

How will multiplayer differ from the original?
The original Steam listing described Crusade multiplayer for up to 32 players. Community Edition is intended to renew multiplayer around Steamworks, while adding campaign co-op and extra modes.

“Up to 32 players” describes the original listing, not a confirmed limit for the new edition. Until the developers publish session details, treat co-op party size, matchmaking behavior and mission-specific restrictions as open questions.

Community Edition is based on an updated Source implementation rather than the unmodified 2006 build. The advertised technical changes are aimed at compatibility, rendering and creator support.

These tools could make custom campaigns and repeatable challenge content easier to distribute, but their practical limits will depend on the final release and the documentation available to creators.
Do you need to own the original Dark Messiah?
Yes. The Steam page states that the community-made mod requires ownership of Dark Messiah of Might & Magic. The original 2006 game is therefore the required purchase path; Community Edition is not presented as a free, standalone replacement that runs without it.
Because the new edition is unreleased, check the Steam listing at launch for its exact installation method, ownership check and any edition or regional requirements. A PC controller is optional, but the project specifically advertises controller support.

Is Community Edition free?
The project is described as a mod, and ownership of the original game is required. However, the available Steam information does not state a separate Community Edition price or definitively promise that every component will be free. Plan on owning the original game and verify the final store terms when the release page is updated.

Dark Messiah’s appeal came from physical combat, environmental interaction and fast first-person abilities. Community Edition targets the parts that aging PC releases commonly leave fragmented: version-exclusive maps, abandoned content, modern operating-system support and a workable online stack. It also gives creators Workshop, scripting and procedural-level tools in the same package, rather than requiring a collection of unrelated fixes.
The project is still a work in progress. Its 2026 window, co-op implementation, restored-content list and final compatibility details can change before launch. Wishlisting the Steam page is the most direct way to see an official date or requirement update.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I play Community Edition on Linux?
Linux support is listed as a first-class target alongside Windows 64-bit support. The final distribution method and supported Linux versions have not yet been specified on Steam.
Will my old Dark Messiah multiplayer saves or servers carry over?
No compatibility guarantee has been published. Because Community Edition uses an updated Source base and a renewed Steamworks multiplayer layer, existing saves, server setups and mods may require changes.
Are the Elements maps the complete console campaign?
The listing promises console-exclusive maps and modes and says it combines PC and Elements material. It does not yet provide a definitive checklist confirming that every console asset or mode is included.
