Security engineering may be more resilient when the work centers on designing and integrating security controls, but no job title is automation-proof. A role dominated by repeatable alert handling is more exposed to partial automation than one requiring system-level design, investigation, and accountable decisions. That is a task-based inference, not a measured ranking: official sources do not provide a direct automation forecast comparing cybersecurity analysts with security engineers. The best way to judge a particular job is to examine what the person actually does.

What does “resilient to automation” mean for these careers?

Resilience does not mean a role will never use automation or that its tasks will remain unchanged. It means the job is less likely to be reduced to a set of repeatable steps that software can perform without much context, judgment, or human responsibility. In cybersecurity, tools can assist with collecting signals, processing recurring work, and surfacing possible problems. The harder question is who interprets an ambiguous signal, decides what risk it represents, and owns the consequences of a response.

That distinction matters more than the title on a job posting. The National Institute of Standards and Technology’s NICE Framework groups cybersecurity work by responsibilities and tasks, and explicitly cautions that “Work Roles are not synonymous with jobs or occupations.” Employers combine work in different ways, so two people with the same title may have quite different exposure to automation. There is therefore no defensible universal answer that every security engineer is safer than every analyst. The more useful comparison is between task mixes: routine monitoring and reporting on one side, and context-rich investigation, secure design, implementation, and risk decisions on the other.

Which tasks are more exposed to automation?

Tasks that are frequent, stable, and governed by clear rules are generally easier to automate in part. Tasks that involve incomplete evidence, changing systems, trade-offs, or responsibility for exceptions are harder to automate end to end. This is a reasoned comparison of the work described by BLS and NICE, not a measured estimate of how many jobs will be automated.

Work dimension Cybersecurity analyst examples Security engineer examples What it suggests about automation
Repeatable work Routine monitoring, reviewing alerts, and recurring reporting; the precise duties vary by employer. Routine configuration or deployment steps; the precise duties vary by employer. High-volume, consistent steps can often be assisted or automated in part.
Investigation Validating detections, investigating incidents, and assembling evidence. Diagnosing control failures and security weaknesses across systems. Tools can gather and correlate evidence; interpreting unclear findings still calls for context.
Design responsibility Assessing controls or recommending mitigations may be part of the role. Designing and integrating controls into systems and technical solutions may be central. System-level design and trade-offs are generally less automatable from end to end than narrow processes.
Operational accountability Escalation and incident-response responsibilities depend on the employer. Building, testing, deploying, and maintaining security solutions depend on the employer. Handling exceptions and owning consequences remain important; a title alone does not reveal the level of responsibility.

The NICE Framework places secure system research, design, development, and testing in its Design and Development category. It also groups implementation, operations, and maintenance as cybersecurity work. These are useful ways to classify responsibilities, not a claim that every engineering job includes every activity or that analysts never contribute to design. NIST NICE Framework categories and work-role guidance

Will AI replace cybersecurity analysts?

The available evidence does not establish that AI will replace cybersecurity analysts as an occupation. It supports a more limited conclusion: automation and AI can improve efficiency in parts of security work, while demand for information security analysts is also projected to grow in the United States.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics describes analysts as people who “plan and carry out security measures to protect an organization’s computer networks and systems.” Its occupational description includes monitoring networks for breaches, investigating incidents, and using and maintaining security software. Those responsibilities combine repeatable activities with the work of deciding what evidence means and what action is appropriate. BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook: Information Security Analysts

In its analysis of factors affecting occupational utilization, BLS describes cyberattack-driven increases in security staffing and capabilities, slightly offset by efficiencies from greater use of automated and artificial-intelligence technologies. This is a mixed effect: tools may reduce the effort needed for some tasks, but that does not by itself establish that organizations will need fewer people overall. BLS factors affecting occupational utilization

The practical implication for an analyst is to avoid defining the job only as processing alerts. Detection tools can support monitoring, but validating a finding, investigating an incident, assembling evidence, and communicating the significance of a risk require more than carrying out a fixed workflow. How much of that work sits with an analyst varies by organization.

Is cybersecurity engineering safe from automation?

No. Engineering is not immune to automation: routine configuration and deployment steps can be assisted or partly automated. But engineering work that involves designing security into systems, integrating controls with a technical solution, and diagnosing failures across environments is generally less exposed to full automation than a narrow, repetitive workflow. That is a qualified inference from the work involved, not an official forecast for the security-engineer occupation.

NICE’s Design and Development category covers secure system research, design, development, and testing; its categories also include implementation, operations, and maintenance. Together, these work areas illustrate why “engineering” can span both repeatable execution and more context-dependent decisions. An engineer who mostly follows a standardized deployment procedure has a different task mix from one responsible for resolving trade-offs across a system’s design.

The distinction is not that analysts investigate while engineers think, or that one role is inherently more valuable. Both can involve technical judgment and operational responsibility. The key question is whether a specific job gives a person responsibility for interpreting conditions and making or implementing decisions, or confines most work to predictable steps.

Which career is more future-proof: analyst or engineer?

If the comparison is between an analyst job centered on repeated monitoring and alert processing and an engineering job centered on secure design and integration, the engineering role may be more resilient to end-to-end automation. If the analyst role includes complex incident investigation and consequential risk decisions while the engineering role is mostly routine configuration, that conclusion may not hold. The job’s task mix is a better guide than its title.

Use this comparison as a framework, not a universal job description. NICE treats work roles as groupings of accountable work rather than synonyms for job titles, and employers arrange responsibilities differently. NIST NICE Framework overview

Compare the actual responsibilities

Read job descriptions for recurring duties rather than relying on labels such as analyst, engineer, or security operations. Look for how much work involves alert triage, incident investigation, secure architecture, cloud and identity controls, scripting or automation, and responsibility for implementing changes. These examples describe areas to check, not universal duties attached to either title.

  • More context-dependent language: investigating incidents, diagnosing weaknesses across systems, designing controls, evaluating trade-offs, or owning implementation.
  • Questions to clarify: Who validates a detection? Who decides whether to escalate? Who approves or implements a mitigation? What happens when a standard workflow does not fit?

Look for decision rights, not just technical keywords

A job can mention advanced technologies and still consist largely of repeatable operations. Conversely, an analyst position can involve substantial judgment if the person must investigate uncertain events, explain risks, and help determine an appropriate response. The wording of a posting is only a starting point: during an interview, ask for examples of an ordinary week and a recent exception the team had to handle.

Also distinguish responsibility from mere exposure. A person may use a security platform without deciding how its output changes the organization’s response. For automation resilience, it is useful to know whether the role includes interpreting evidence, communicating its significance, and carrying a decision through to a practical outcome.

What do employment projections say about analyst demand?

U.S. labor-market data is favorable for the BLS occupation Information Security Analysts, but it is not a direct comparison with security engineers and should not be treated as global data. BLS’s Occupational Outlook Handbook reports one projection range, while a separate BLS summary reports a different range; the figures come from distinct projection vintages and should not be blended.

Measure Figure and scope How to interpret it
Employment growth 21% projected for U.S. Information Security Analysts from 2025 to 2035, on the current BLS Handbook page. An occupational projection, not a forecast for all cybersecurity workers or security engineers.
Average annual openings About 14,100 for U.S. Information Security Analysts per year over the 2025–2035 decade, according to the BLS Handbook. Openings are not all newly created jobs; they also reflect labor-market replacement needs.
Median annual wage $129,180 for U.S. Information Security Analysts in May 2025, according to the BLS Handbook. A national occupational median, not a promise of an individual salary or a security-engineer pay figure.
Separate projection vintage 28.5% projected growth for Information Security Analysts from 2024 to 2034, in a separate BLS 2026 summary. This is a different time range and projection vintage from the Handbook figure above; do not average or combine the rates.

These projections are context about demand, not a measurement of automation resilience. They do not establish how much of an analyst’s work will change, nor do they provide an equivalent security-engineer projection for a head-to-head comparison. A growing occupation can still change substantially as tools alter the share of time spent on particular tasks.

What do cybersecurity workforce estimates tell you—and what don’t they?

Workforce snapshots can indicate the scale of cybersecurity staffing needs, but they do not measure how resilient a particular job is to automation. Their date, geography, and definition matter, and a shortage estimate should not be read as a count of open jobs.

How can you build skills that remain useful as tools change?

Build capability around the parts of security work that involve understanding systems, investigating uncertain situations, and making decisions people can act on. The point is not to avoid automation; it is to be able to use tools while contributing judgment and follow-through that a workflow alone cannot supply.

Strengthen system and security fundamentals

Develop an understanding of how systems fit together and where security controls apply. For engineering-oriented work, focus on being able to reason about secure design and integration rather than only executing standard configuration. For analyst-oriented work, practice moving from an alert or observation to a defensible explanation of what it may mean and what evidence is still needed.

Practice incident judgment and communication

Investigation has value when findings are made understandable to the people who need to respond. Practice separating observed evidence from assumptions, describing uncertainty clearly, and explaining why a potential issue matters. These capabilities support work that crosses technical analysis and organizational decision-making.

Learn to work with automation

Automation fluency matters because tools can take on repeated processing and help surface information. Learn to understand what a tool is doing, where its output needs validation, and when a result should be escalated or handled differently. The goal is to complement automated workflows rather than assume that either accepting or rejecting every output is sufficient.

What is the most reliable way to make the career decision?

Choose based on the work you want to do and the responsibilities you can realistically pursue, not on a promise that one title is automation-proof. If you prefer investigation and interpreting evidence, seek analyst roles that go beyond repetitive review. If you prefer designing and integrating controls, look for engineering roles with genuine responsibility for secure system decisions and implementation.

  1. Collect several job descriptions for each title in the region and sector where you intend to work.
  2. Mark the recurring tasks in each posting: monitoring, alert review, incident investigation, design, implementation, reporting, and automation.
  3. Separate execution from judgment by noting who evaluates exceptions, makes recommendations, and owns changes.
  4. Ask employers for concrete examples of a normal week, how automated tools are used, and what the person in the role does when a result is ambiguous.
  5. Compare the work, not just the title and look for opportunities to build system fundamentals, investigation skill, communication, and automation fluency.

This approach avoids the main trap in the analyst-versus-engineer debate: treating broad job titles as if they described standardized jobs. The available evidence supports a task-based judgment, while leaving the outcome for any individual role dependent on its actual responsibilities.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a security engineer always earn more than a cybersecurity analyst?

The figures cited here provide a U.S. May 2025 median for the BLS Information Security Analyst occupation, but they do not establish a comparable security-engineer median. Pay for a particular opening can depend on location, seniority, employer, and the scope of the role, so the titles alone do not support a reliable salary comparison.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can a cybersecurity analyst move into security engineering?

A transition may be possible when the analyst builds relevant system-design and implementation experience, but the sources here do not prescribe a specific pathway or credential. Compare the target engineering posting’s responsibilities with your current experience and identify which design, integration, or operational duties you have not yet performed.

Do cybersecurity analyst jobs require coding?

The cited occupational descriptions do not establish a universal coding requirement for analysts. Requirements vary by employer and role, so check the posting for scripting or automation duties and ask how frequently they are used in practice.

Are these career projections about cybersecurity jobs worldwide?

No. The BLS employment growth, openings, and wage figures are U.S. occupational statistics for Information Security Analysts. The global workforce-shortage estimate is a separate (ISC)² study estimate reproduced by NIST, not a worldwide projection for either job title.
