Yes. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is canon to Cyberpunk 2077 because both stories take place in the same Night City continuity. David Martinez, Lucy, Rebecca and V are different protagonists living through connected events, not versions of the characters in alternate universes. The original ten-episode anime occurs before V’s game story. An optional tabletop adventure, The Jacket, is set between them, while the October 2026 game update adds a quest explicitly positioned before the separate ten-episode Edgerunners 2. You can watch the anime without playing the game, but the shared references reward readers who know how the timeline and media fit together.
What is the confirmed Cyberpunk timeline?
Official material establishes an order, but not a precise calendar date for every anime scene. CD PROJEKT RED describes the first series as a standalone story about David in Night City, while R. Talsorian Games’ companion material reaches the year 2076 and places its follow-up mission after the show. That evidence supports an anime-before-game order without assigning every episode a numbered year.
| Story or release | Position in the continuity | What is confirmed |
|---|---|---|
| Cyberpunk: Edgerunners | Before Cyberpunk 2077 | Standalone, ten-episode David Martinez story in Night City; the official setting material reaches 2076. CD PROJEKT RED’s series page |
| The Jacket | After the anime and before Cyberpunk 2077 | A published Cyberpunk RED mission featuring Falco and a different player crew. R. Talsorian Games’ Mission Kit description |
| Cyberpunk 2077 | After the anime | V’s game includes official anime references, equipment and secrets introduced by the 2022 Edgerunners Update. Patch 1.6 notes |
| Edgerunners 2 | A later, connected story | A new-cast, standalone ten-episode series; update 2.5’s Clampdown quest is set before its events. Official series page |
The safest way to state the sequence is therefore original anime → optional tabletop bridge → Cyberpunk 2077 → Edgerunners 2. The order is firm where publishers state it directly, while exact fictional dates and the canonical status of every player choice remain open.

Yes. The connection is a shared setting and continuity, not merely an adaptation that borrows names. CD PROJEKT RED associate game director Paweł Sasko has described V, David, Lucy and the newer anime characters as belonging to one consistent universe. He wrote, “I wanted the game to acknowledge that connection directly,” explaining why the game’s world contains deliberate references to the series. That does not make David the game’s hidden protagonist or require the anime to explain V’s personal history. Each work follows a different crew and can be understood on its own. Shared locations, technology, institutions and named characters provide continuity, while the stories remain separate viewpoints on Night City.
Does Edgerunners take place before Cyberpunk 2077?
It does. The first anime is the earlier narrative, and the game’s 2022 update was designed to add references to a story that had already happened. The sources do not give a single exact date for all ten episodes, so claims that every scene occurs in a particular year go beyond what has been officially established.
What the game’s 2022 update confirms
Patch 1.6, called the Edgerunners Update, added anime-related secrets, equipment and Photo Mode features to Cyberpunk 2077. Those notes are first-party confirmation that the game recognizes the anime in-world. They do not, by themselves, identify every familiar weapon, jacket or quest that fans may associate with David’s crew, so an exact acquisition list should not be inferred from the patch announcement alone.

What is The Jacket, and is it required?
The Jacket is an optional tabletop story in the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Mission Kit, not downloadable content for Cyberpunk 2077. R. Talsorian Games calls it a spiritual sequel and says its purpose is to “Find out what happens after the anime ends.” Its published placement is after the anime and before the game, making it a lore bridge for groups that want another Night City crew’s perspective.
How the tabletop bridge works
- The adventure centers on Falco and a new playable crew rather than turning David into a player character.
- The Mission Kit includes seven pre-made Edgerunners, according to the publisher’s product information for its 2024 release.
- Choices can produce multiple endings. The premise and placement are official franchise lore, but every result reached at an individual gaming table cannot simultaneously be one fixed historical event.
- Owning or playing the box is not necessary to follow either the anime or V’s game story.
Readers who do not play tabletop role-playing games can treat The Jacket as an additional licensed story. It fills in a period between the two screen-and-game narratives without changing the basic order.
Spoilers: what is David’s fate, and does Edgerunners 2 bring him back?
Spoiler warning for the original anime and the second series. David’s story ends with his death; the second series does not reverse that outcome. In an October 2026 discussion, franchise vice president and Edgerunners 2 showrunner Bartosz Sztybor said the team deliberately treated David as dead and built the new show around a new cast. Requests such as “Bring David back” and “Is Lucy safe?” were part of the audience conversation he described, but they are not evidence of a resurrection plot. CD PROJEKT RED’s October 2026 feature
This distinction matters for canon: continuity does not mean every installment must continue the same hero. The setting can preserve David’s history while following unrelated people whose actions occur elsewhere in Night City.

Where does Edgerunners 2 fit?
Edgerunners 2 is a new, standalone ten-episode story with a new cast. Its official premiere was October 20, 2026. It belongs to the same broader continuity, but it is not presented as a direct continuation of David’s campaign.
What update 2.5 adds
The released October 2026 update 2.5 adds the Clampdown quest as an explicit game-to-series link. In V’s game, complete The Heist and two Wakako gigs, then wait for Wakako’s message to start the quest. Completing it grants a five-piece King gear set. Official notes describe the quest as taking place before the events of Edgerunners 2, which establishes its relative position without proving a precise fictional year for the show.
The quest demonstrates the same design principle as the earlier update: V can encounter another story already unfolding in Night City. Developers coordinated dialogue with the show’s writers and used the same voice actors for the new characters, strengthening the cross-media link while leaving the show’s plot independent of a player’s chosen game ending.
What remains unconfirmed about the canon?
Several boundaries are important when separating confirmed continuity from fan extrapolation:

- No official source cited here assigns an exact calendar date to every scene in the first anime.
- The available announcements do not establish a precise fictional year for Edgerunners 2; “before the second show” is the supported description for Clampdown.
- Cyberpunk 2077 has selectable endings, and the cited material does not declare one universal ending canonical for all other stories.
- Because The Jacket can end in different ways at different tables, its branching outcomes should not be treated as one mandatory historical sequence.
These limits do not weaken the central answer. They show where the publishers have defined an order and where they have intentionally left room for player choice or future clarification.
Should you watch the anime or play the game first?
Choose based on the experience you want, not on fear of missing required backstory. The anime is explicitly standalone, so it is a complete entry point for someone who wants a tightly focused ten-episode tragedy. The game offers a much longer interactive perspective and then rewards familiarity with the anime through optional discoveries.
Watch first if you want
- A self-contained story with David and Lucy as its emotional center.
- Immediate context for the anime references added to the game.
- To avoid learning game-world details through exploration before seeing the series’ own plot.
Play first if you want
- To explore Night City at your own pace and encounter references organically.
- An interactive story in which V’s decisions, relationships and ending belong to your playthrough.
- To treat the anime as a later perspective on the same setting rather than as required game exposition.
After either entry point, The Jacket is an optional tabletop extension. It is useful for groups seeking more lore, but neither the box nor a particular table’s ending is needed to understand the screen and game stories.

How should the canon be summarized?
The most accurate short version is: Edgerunners is canon, David’s story comes before V’s, and the two protagonists are not the same person. The game’s 2022 update acknowledges the original anime; The Jacket occupies the published gap as optional tabletop lore; and the October 2026 game update places Clampdown before a new-cast Edgerunners 2. Beyond those anchors, exact dates, branching tabletop outcomes and one “correct” game ending should not be invented.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I watch Cyberpunk: Edgerunners without playing Cyberpunk 2077?
Yes. The original series is officially described as a standalone ten-episode story, so no game save, mission order or knowledge of V is required. Playing afterward can add context to references, but it is enrichment rather than a prerequisite.
Does The Jacket change what happens in my Cyberpunk 2077 playthrough?
No. It is a separate Cyberpunk RED tabletop mission, not a software expansion or downloadable game chapter. Its branching results depend on the group playing it and do not alter a video-game save.
Is Edgerunners 2 a continuation of David’s story?
No. The announced second series uses a new cast and is presented as a standalone story in the same universe. Official comments specifically reject treating David’s death as something the new series secretly undoes.
Does Clampdown prove the exact year Edgerunners 2 happens?
No. The quest’s confirmed function is relative: it occurs before the events of the second series. That ordering does not supply a numbered in-universe year for every episode.
Does Cyberpunk 2077 have one canon ending for Edgerunners fans?
The cited official material does not select one universal ending among the game’s branches. References to the anime establish a connected world, not a ruling that every player must reach the same finale.
