Cyberpunk 2077 Standard Edition is the base game; Ultimate Edition is that same game bundled with the paid Phantom Liberty expansion. Ultimate is the straightforward choice if you want the complete current story on a supported platform and the bundle costs less than buying the game and expansion separately. Standard remains sensible if you only want to try the base campaign, already own it, or are playing on hardware that cannot run Phantom Liberty.
Both editions receive ordinary free game updates on supported platforms. Ultimate does not give exclusive access to patches, and an existing owner can normally purchase Phantom Liberty separately rather than buying the base game again. What is the difference between Cyberpunk 2077 Standard and Ultimate Edition?
The paid expansion is the central difference. Standard contains the original Cyberpunk 2077 campaign and its normal free updates. Ultimate does not represent a different main game engine or a separate story that replaces the original campaign. It is a package containing the base game and expansion. You can play the original campaign first and begin Phantom Liberty later; buying Ultimate does not force you to start the expansion immediately.
Does Ultimate Edition include Phantom Liberty?
Yes. Ultimate Edition bundles Phantom Liberty with Cyberpunk 2077. The exact delivery method depends on the platform: it may be a digital entitlement, content on a Switch 2 game card, or a redemption code in a boxed PS5 package. Check the platform-specific details below before assuming that every physical box contains the same thing.
The expansion adds a separate campaign in Dogtown, new equipment and abilities, and its own missions and characters. It is paid content, unlike the regular post-launch updates that CD PROJEKT RED distributes to base-game owners.

Is Phantom Liberty included in Standard Edition?
No. Standard Edition is the base game only. If your store lists Phantom Liberty as a separate purchase for your platform, you can add it to an existing Standard copy. You do not need to repurchase the base game simply to obtain the expansion.
Before buying, confirm that the expansion is sold for the same platform family and account region as your game. A PC purchase, a PlayStation purchase and an Xbox purchase are separate entitlements; ownership does not automatically transfer between them.
Do I need Ultimate Edition for free updates?
No. Ordinary free updates are available to base-game owners on supported platforms. CD PROJEKT RED’s Update 2.5 FAQ states: “Owning Phantom Liberty or the Ultimate Edition is not required.” That statement concerns obtaining the free update, not access to the paid expansion.
The Edgerunners 2 Update (2.5) was announced as released on October 22, 2026. It adds game content without making Phantom Liberty mandatory. The publisher’s notices disagree about the Switch 2 rollout: the launch post describes the update as available there, while the detailed update page says its Switch 2 release is coming later. If Switch 2 update timing matters to you, check the current platform notice rather than relying on an old headline.

Do not use the old claim that Update 2.0 or 2.1 is the latest patch. Those updates have been superseded by later releases. Free patches can still have platform-specific availability or timing, so your console’s download page is the final authority.
Should an existing Cyberpunk 2077 owner buy Ultimate?
Usually not, unless the Ultimate bundle is cheaper or more convenient than buying the expansion alone. Compare the current price of Phantom Liberty by itself with the Ultimate listing. Buying Ultimate when you already own the base game can leave you paying for a second base-game license that you do not need.
- Open the store for the platform on which you own Cyberpunk 2077.
- Record the current price and edition name for Phantom Liberty.
- Record the current price and contents of Ultimate Edition on that same account and platform.
- Check whether your current copy is eligible for the expansion and whether it is a disc, download or region-specific entitlement.
- Choose the separate expansion when it is cheaper or preserves the copy and save setup you already use. Choose Ultimate only when its total price, packaging or portability offers a real advantage.
Promotions are temporary and differ between storefronts. A discount seen on one platform cannot be treated as a universal Cyberpunk 2077 price, and a sale price can disappear before you complete the purchase.
Which platforms can run Ultimate Edition?
Ultimate is a current-generation package, but the exact supported systems vary. The publisher announced Ultimate for PC and current-generation consoles. The expansion is not a way to add new content to the last-generation PS4 or Xbox One versions.

PlayStation lists a PS4/PS5 base-game product and a PS5 Ultimate Edition. A PS5 is required for Phantom Liberty and for patches released after the PS4 version’s last patch on November 8, 2022. A PS4 disc owner can obtain the PS5 game version only with a PS5 that has a disc drive, and the disc must remain inserted when playing the upgraded version. That upgrade does not by itself grant ownership of Phantom Liberty.
For a boxed PS5 Ultimate Edition, CD PROJEKT RED’s support documentation identifies a Phantom Liberty redemption code in the box. The code’s country or region must match the buyer’s PlayStation Network account. Used-copy and import shoppers should confirm that the code is present, unredeemed and usable in their account region; the support page establishes the regional rule, not the status of any particular second-hand copy.
Xbox
Microsoft’s Ultimate listing itemizes the base game and Phantom Liberty and says the package is playable only on Xbox Series X|S, not Xbox One. An Xbox boxed edition was announced, but the official material reviewed here does not settle what is installed from a particular retail package, what must be downloaded, or whether a specific listing supports complete offline installation. Treat “physical” as a packaging description until the seller identifies the actual disc or code contents.

Ultimate is available for PC as a combined purchase. The PC version still depends on the store account, system requirements and digital delivery rules of the storefront where you buy it. If you already own the base game on PC, compare the standalone expansion with Ultimate before purchasing another bundle.

Ultimate launched for Nintendo Switch 2 on June 5, 2025 as a download and as a physical 64 GB game card. CD PROJEKT RED says the base game and Phantom Liberty are contained on that cartridge, so it is not merely a box containing a download code for the expansion. The Switch 2 version supports motion, gyro, touch and mouse-control options. Additional language packs may require a download.
In CD PROJEKT’s first-half 2025 earnings remarks, about 70% of June 2025 Switch 2 Ultimate sales were physical copies. That is a dated, platform-specific sales share, not a claim about global physical sales in 2026. It does, however, explain why buyers may encounter both a substantial cartridge release and a digital listing.
What are the physical-edition traps?
Physical Ultimate packages are not interchangeable. The Switch 2 release places both components on a 64 GB card, while the boxed PS5 release uses a region-sensitive Phantom Liberty code. Xbox physical packaging was announced, but its exact installation and offline-play behavior must be checked for the individual listing.
- PS5: Confirm that the box includes the expansion code, that the code is unused, and that its country or region matches your PSN account. A used box can be missing a redeemed code even if the base-game disc is still present.
- Switch 2: The official 64 GB card contains both the base game and expansion. Language packs or later updates may still require downloads, so “on the card” does not mean “no download ever.”
- Xbox Series X: Verify whether the retailer is supplying a disc, a code, or a package that relies on a download. Do not promise yourself a fully offline installation without that information.
- Imported copies: Match the package’s region to your account before opening it. Region rules are especially important when the expansion is delivered by a code rather than on the disc or card.
- PS4 discs: A PS4-to-PS5 game upgrade requires a PS5 with a disc drive and the original disc inserted. It does not turn the PS4 release into an Ultimate Edition.

Use the price displayed by your own storefront at checkout, not an old article or another region’s sale. The correct comparison depends on what you already own:

No single “cheapest edition” exists across all countries and dates. Store promotions, taxes, currency conversion and platform-specific discounts change the result. Check the product page immediately before purchase and make sure you are comparing the same platform and account region.
Can you play the original campaign without Phantom Liberty?
Yes. Standard Edition contains the complete base-game campaign and can be played on its own. You can finish that story without buying the expansion, and free updates do not require Ultimate. The expansion adds a separate campaign and additional systems rather than acting as a required chapter of the original game’s opening.

If you later purchase Phantom Liberty for the same supported platform, you can continue using the base game and access the expansion through that entitlement. Keep your platform and account consistent; buying the expansion for a different ecosystem will not unlock it on your original one.
Is Ultimate Edition worth it for a new player?
For a new player who wants the full available story, Ultimate is generally the simpler purchase. It puts the base game and paid expansion under one product listing and avoids a second transaction. It is especially attractive when the bundle’s current price is no higher than buying Standard and Phantom Liberty separately.
Standard is the better fit when you are unsure whether you will enjoy the game, when your hardware cannot run the expansion, or when a temporary base-game sale is substantially cheaper and you want to decide about the expansion later. Because the free updates are shared, you are not sacrificing patch access by starting with Standard.
Do not buy Ultimate solely because its name suggests a different quality level or exclusive updates. Its practical premium is the included expansion and, depending on platform, a different physical package.
Is Ultimate Edition available on PS4 or Xbox One?
Not as a way to play Phantom Liberty on those last-generation consoles. PS5 is required for the expansion and for updates after the PS4 version’s final patch in November 2022. Microsoft’s Ultimate listing specifies Xbox Series X|S and excludes Xbox One.
You may still see base-game products, cross-generation entitlements or older discs in stores. Read the platform label carefully: a PS4 disc that offers a PS5 upgrade is not the same as a PS5 Ultimate package, and an Xbox One copy does not gain the Series X|S expansion through a name change.

If you access the base game through a subscription and then buy Phantom Liberty, verify what happens if the base game leaves the catalog. The expansion does not generally replace the need for a playable base-game license. Before subscribing or buying an add-on, check the live listing for your country and console generation.
What should you buy in each common scenario?
- “I have never played Cyberpunk 2077.” Buy Ultimate if you already know you want the expansion and its current bundle price is sensible. Buy Standard first if you want a lower-commitment introduction.
- “I own Standard on PC, PS5 or Xbox Series X|S.” Price Phantom Liberty alone. Avoid paying for a duplicate base game unless a sale makes the bundle cheaper.
