What do you need before transferring a save?

Which regional restrictions matter?
CD PROJEKT RED identifies Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan, and Japan as regions with restrictions relevant to cross-platform saves. The important point is not simply where the account holder lives; it is which regional edition of the game is installed on the destination console.
The publisher’s guidance says a console save can be moved to PC, while a save made by an unrestricted PC version may not load into a more restrictive console version. The rules can also affect a later return trip: overwriting a restricted save while using an unrestricted version can change what transfers back. If your Xbox copy is a regional SKU, verify its compatibility before making the PC save your only copy.
How do mods work with Cross Progression now?
Older advice that modded saves can never work on consoles is no longer current. Patch 2.5 added cross-platform mod support through mod.io. Nevertheless, “mod support” does not mean every PC mod is portable. The save expects the same relevant mods to be present and enabled on the destination, and the mod must carry an Available on consoles designation for an Xbox transfer.
For PC-to-Xbox, make a list of the mods enabled in the source playthrough, compare it with the console catalog, and install the matching set before loading the cloud save. If a required mod is unavailable or incompatible, use an unmodded save or adjust the playthrough only after confirming that the destination can load it. CD PROJEKT RED also states that achievements are disabled on console for modded saves, so a successful transfer can still change how that save behaves.
Do the patch versions have to match?
Keeping both installations updated is the safest general setup, and CD PROJEKT RED recommends the latest patch in its transfer instructions. However, do not treat identical version numbers as an absolute requirement. The publisher’s Patch 2.13 notes explicitly say that Cross Progression continued to function despite a PC-only version mismatch. That example should not be expanded into a blanket promise for every old, new, or platform-specific combination.

Is Xbox-to-PC the same as moving between Xbox consoles?
No. Moving from one Xbox console to another is a separate Xbox migration task. Smart Delivery, Xbox cloud synchronization, or an Xbox system network transfer may apply to that scenario. Those mechanisms do not replace the in-game CD PROJEKT RED account steps for Xbox-to-PC or PC-to-Xbox.
