Use Flexbox when a component is organized along one axis, such as a row of navigation links or a vertical stack. Use CSS Grid when you need to coordinate rows and columns together, such as a page shell or a set of cards that must line up across rows. The deciding question is not how large the component is: it is whether you need to control one direction or two.
Both tools can adapt to changing space, and they work well together. The clearest layout usually comes from assigning each one the job it handles best: Grid for shared structure, Flexbox for a one-axis group of content.
What is the difference between CSS Grid and Flexbox?
Flexbox is a one-dimensional layout method: it arranges items along a main axis, either a row or a column. Grid is two-dimensional: it lets you define and control rows and columns together. That distinction affects how you align items, how their sizes are determined, and how the layout behaves when space changes.

The content influences their sizing, so Flexbox is often described as content-out. In Grid, you describe tracks—the rows and columns that make up the layout—and place items into that structure. Grid is often described as layout-in.

| Question | Flexbox | Grid |
|---|---|---|
| How many layout directions are coordinated? | One axis: a row or a column | Two axes: rows and columns together |
| What tends to shape sizing? | Content influences item sizes; items can grow or shrink along the main axis | The track structure defines the layout into which items are placed |
| What happens when items wrap? | Each flex line is independent; items on separate lines do not automatically share column alignment | Items can occupy shared row and column tracks |
| What placement options are useful? | Flexible distribution and alignment along one axis | Explicit placement, named areas, automatic placement, and layering |
These differences are about layout behavior, not component size. A small control can need two-dimensional placement, while a large region may only need to arrange content along one axis.
When should I use Flexbox?
Start with Flexbox when the items form one main group along a row or column and you want their content and available space to influence how they fit. It is a natural choice for navigation links, button rows, inline controls, and vertical stacks.
Use it for a row of controls
For a toolbar with a group of controls on one line, the primary layout problem is how to arrange and align the items along that line. A basic structure might look like this:
.toolbar {
display: flex;
align-items: center;
gap: 0.75rem;
}
Here, Flexbox controls the row. The items remain a one-axis group; their content can affect their sizes, and Flexbox can distribute available space by allowing items to grow or shrink. If the row no longer fits, wrapping can be part of the responsive behavior:
.toolbar {
display: flex;
flex-wrap: wrap;
gap: 0.75rem;
}
Wrapping gives items another line, but it does not turn the flex container into a shared row-and-column layout. Each flex line is independent, which matters if you expect items in one line to line up with items in the next.

Use it for a vertical stack
A column of related items is still a one-dimensional layout. Flexbox can arrange the items along a vertical main axis:
.settings-list {
display: flex;
flex-direction: column;
gap: 1rem;
}
Choose this when the important relationship is the sequence and spacing of items down the column. If the design instead depends on coordinating the widths of several columns and the heights or placement of rows, the layout has become two-dimensional and Grid is a better starting point.

Watch for repeated width rules whose main purpose is to force items on separate wrapped lines into matching columns. Flexbox does not share column tracks across its independent lines, so these rules can become brittle as content or available width changes. If you need several rows to align to the same columns, reconsider the layout as Grid.
When should I use CSS Grid?
Start with Grid when the arrangement itself has rows and columns that need to work together. It is well suited to page shells, card collections with shared columns, and interfaces where items occupy defined regions or overlap.
Use it for a page shell
A page with a header, sidebar, main content, and footer has relationships in both directions: regions occupy columns and rows. Grid lets the layout describe those regions together rather than treating the page as one long row or column.

.page {
display: grid;
grid-template-columns: 16rem 1fr;
grid-template-areas:
"header header"
"sidebar main"
"footer footer";
}
.header { grid-area: header; }
.sidebar { grid-area: sidebar; }
.main { grid-area: main; }
.footer { grid-area: footer; }
This example uses named areas to make the intended placement visible in the layout definition. The specific track sizes are design choices, not universal recommendations; the important point is that the rows and columns are coordinated as one structure.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse it for cards that must align across rows
If a collection of cards should occupy shared columns across multiple rows, Grid gives the cards common tracks. This differs from a wrapped flex layout, where the items on each line arrange independently.
.card-list {
display: grid;
grid-template-columns: repeat(3, 1fr);
gap: 1rem;
}
When the available width changes, a Grid layout can also use responsive track patterns such as auto-fit or auto-fill. These let the track structure respond algorithmically rather than requiring every item to be assigned a fixed position. Which pattern and track sizing work best depends on the intended layout and content.
Use it when placement or layering is part of the design
Grid supports explicit placement on its lines and areas, automatic placement into the grid, and layering within the grid. Those capabilities are useful when elements need defined positions or need to occupy overlapping space. If the only requirement is to distribute a straightforward row of controls, that additional placement model may be unnecessary; Flexbox is usually the more direct fit.
How do I choose between them for a real layout?
Describe the relationship among the items before choosing a CSS property. If you are controlling only the row or only the column, start with Flexbox. If you need to control the row and column together, start with Grid.

- Identify the primary relationship. Is this a one-axis sequence, such as links in a row or items in a stack? Begin with Flexbox. Does it have shared rows and columns or defined regions? Begin with Grid.
- Check how alignment must work across lines. If wrapped items can simply continue on another independent line, Flexbox can suit the job. If a card in one row must align to the same column as a card in another row, use shared Grid tracks.
- Ask what should determine sizing. If content should influence item sizes and available space should be distributed along one axis, Flexbox is a natural fit. If the track structure should define where content goes, use Grid.
- Consider placement needs. For explicit lines, named regions, automatic placement in two dimensions, or layering, Grid provides the relevant structure.
- Reassess accumulating exceptions. If a Flexbox layout needs repeated fixed widths and alignment workarounds to simulate columns across lines, try expressing the shared structure with Grid instead.
The practical test is not whether a layout can be made to work with either tool. It is which tool expresses the actual relationship with fewer special-case rules.
Can I use Grid and Flexbox together?
Yes. They are complementary layout methods, not competing choices for an entire page. Use Grid to define the outer structure, then use Flexbox inside a Grid area when its contents form a one-axis group.
For example, a page shell can use Grid to coordinate a header, sidebar, main region, and footer. Within the header, Flexbox can align a logo and a row of controls. The page-level layout needs two-dimensional tracks; the header’s contents may only need one row. Choosing separately at each level keeps the layout model aligned with the actual job.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.What responsive behavior should I expect?
Both systems can respond to available space, but they do so through different layout models. Flexbox changes item growth, shrinkage, and line composition; Grid can retain defined tracks or generate a responsive track structure using patterns such as auto-fit and auto-fill.

For a row of controls, shrinking or wrapping items may be the intended response when the available width changes. For a card layout, preserving shared columns—or changing the number of generated tracks—may be more important. Choose based on what should remain consistent as space changes: the one-axis flow of items, or the two-dimensional track structure.

Neither choice automatically makes a layout responsive in the way a particular design needs. The key is to decide what should adapt: item sizes and line composition, or the number and arrangement of tracks.
What common layout mistakes should I avoid?
- Choosing by component size. A large area is not automatically a Grid problem, and a small component is not automatically a Flexbox problem. Choose by whether the layout needs one axis or coordinated rows and columns.
- Expecting wrapped flex lines to share columns. They are independent lines. Use Grid when cross-row column alignment is a requirement.
- Using Grid just because it is two-dimensional. If the actual relationship is a simple row or column with content-driven distribution, Flexbox is the more direct model.
- Treating the tools as mutually exclusive. A Grid container can provide the outer tracks while Flexbox handles a local one-axis group inside an area.
- Keeping a workaround after the layout’s needs have changed. Fixed widths can force a one-axis layout into approximating shared columns. When the structure is really a row-and-column system, express it as one.
Quick decision table: Grid or Flexbox?
| Layout need | Prefer | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Navigation links, a button row, or inline controls | Flexbox | One primary axis; content-driven distribution and alignment |
| A vertical stack | Flexbox | Items follow one column axis |
| A page shell with header, sidebar, main content, and footer | Grid | Rows and columns define coordinated regions |
| Cards that must align in shared columns across rows | Grid | Shared tracks align items across the layout |
| A single row that must adapt to available width | Flexbox | Items can grow, shrink, wrap, and distribute free space |
| Overlapping or layered interface elements | Grid | Grid supports placement and layering |
| A Grid region containing a one-axis group | Grid outside; Flexbox inside | Each method handles the layout relationship it suits |
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to learn Grid before Flexbox?
No particular learning order is required by these layout models. It can help to practice recognizing whether an example is one-dimensional or two-dimensional, then choose the tool that matches that relationship.
Can I put a Flexbox container inside a Grid item?
Yes. A Grid item can itself be a flex container, and a flex item can itself establish a Grid. The outer element’s layout controls its children; a nested layout controls the next level of descendants.
Does CSS Grid replace floats or positioning for page layout?
Grid is a layout method for rows, columns, and placement, but the material here does not establish a universal replacement rule for floats or positioning. Choose based on the element relationships your design needs rather than assuming one CSS feature replaces every other one.
