For U.S. federal taxes, an exchange statement is enough only in a narrow, well-documented situation: all of your taxable activity occurred on that exchange, its statement and transaction export are complete, your acquisition basis is known, and you have no wallets, transfers, rewards, swaps, or other activity to reconcile. A Form 1099-DA does not replace your reporting obligation or calculate every gain for you. The IRS requires digital-asset income, gains, and losses to be reported whether or not you receive a form, and you must calculate basis before filing. For tax year 2025, Coinbase says its Form 1099-DA reports proceeds only; basis reporting for certain covered assets begins with tax year 2026. If your records span multiple exchanges or wallets, include transferred-in assets, or contain missing basis, reconciliation software or a tax professional is usually the safer route.

What is the difference between an exchange statement and crypto tax software?

An exchange statement is a record produced by one brokerage or exchange. It may include a Form 1099-DA, a transaction history, and downloadable reports. Crypto tax software is a reconciliation tool that attempts to combine records from multiple exchanges, wallets, and other sources, then organize transactions and calculate gains, losses, and income for tax forms.

The distinction matters because an exchange normally sees only the activity it services. A statement can accurately describe sales made on that platform while knowing nothing about coins bought elsewhere, assets transferred in, decentralized-wallet activity, or rewards earned outside the exchange. Software can bring those records together, but it cannot create reliable basis from information that was never preserved, and it does not transfer responsibility for the figures to the software company.

When are exchange statements enough for a crypto tax return?

Using only an exchange statement is reasonable when your activity is genuinely simple and the records are complete. Before relying on it, verify all of the following conditions.

  • One complete activity source: every purchase, sale, exchange, and receipt occurred on the same exchange, with no relevant external wallet or second account.
  • Complete transaction history: the exchange export covers the entire tax year and includes dates, units, asset type, proceeds or fair market value, and transaction identifiers where available.
  • Known basis: you can document what you paid for each disposed asset, including acquisition date and any basis adjustments that apply to your facts.
  • No unreviewed income: you have considered rewards, payments, lending, staking, or other activity that may be ordinary income rather than a simple capital-asset sale.
  • Figures you can trace: every amount entered on the return can be tied to a source record that you retain.

Even in this simple case, treat the 1099-DA as a broker statement, not as a completed tax return. The IRS says digital assets are property for U.S. federal tax purposes and that the taxpayer must determine the correct basis and reporting treatment.

Why is a Form 1099-DA not the same as taxable gain?

Form 1099-DA generally reports proceeds, while gain or loss is determined by comparing proceeds with basis. A sale for $10,000 is not automatically a $10,000 gain: the result depends on what you paid for the asset and on the transaction details that establish your tax position.

The IRS instructs taxpayers to retain the asset type, date and time, number of units, fair market value, and basis needed to support a return. Its “Understanding your Form 1099-DA” guidance states: “You must calculate basis before you file your tax return.” If the form shows proceeds but your basis is missing or wrong, filing the form without reconstructing the basis can overstate or understate the gain.

For digital assets held as capital assets, the IRS identifies Form 8949 for reporting sales, exchanges, and other dispositions. Certain other digital-asset income may belong on Schedule 1 or another form, depending on the facts. A statement can supply useful numbers, but it does not decide which form applies to every transaction.

What changed with Form 1099-DA for tax years 2025 and 2026?

The reporting dates are tied to the year in which the transaction occurred, not simply the year in which you receive paperwork. IRS broker-reporting guidance sets a gross-proceeds reporting start date of January 1, 2025, and a basis-reporting start date of January 1, 2026, for certain covered transactions.

Transaction year What the broker-reporting rule addresses What you still must do
2025 Gross proceeds for transactions effected on or after January 1, 2025. Determine basis yourself, report taxable activity even if no form arrives, and retain supporting records.
2026 and later Basis reporting begins for certain covered transactions effected on or after January 1, 2026. Check whether the asset and transaction are covered, review the reported basis, and correct omissions or errors using your own records.

The phase-in does not mean every 2026 form will contain complete basis for every asset. Coverage depends on the asset, acquisition history, and broker records. It also does not retroactively make a 2025 proceeds-only form a complete gain calculation.

Coinbase gives a concrete example of these limits: it says its tax-year 2025 Form 1099-DA reports proceeds only, with basis reporting for certain covered assets beginning in tax year 2026. Coinbase also describes assets acquired before January 1, 2026 and assets transferred from an external wallet or exchange as noncovered for its basis reporting when the relevant records are unavailable. Those statements are specific to Coinbase; another exchange may use different coverage rules or documentation, so consult that provider’s current tax materials.

How should you choose between an exchange statement and software?

Use the decision points below rather than choosing based on whether an exchange issued a form.

Question Exchange records may be sufficient Software or professional review is more appropriate
Scope All activity occurred on one exchange and its export covers the full period. You used multiple exchanges, self-custody wallets, or on-chain services.
Basis Acquisition dates, quantities, and cost are documented for every disposed lot. Assets were transferred in, older purchases are missing, or basis is marked unavailable.
Transaction types Activity is limited to ordinary buys and sales of capital assets. You have swaps, staking rewards, lending, wrapping, liquidity-provider activity, short sales, or other unusual transactions.
Tax-year coverage You understand whether your form reports proceeds only or includes covered basis. You are relying on a form that may not cover the asset, acquisition date, or external transfer.
Reviewability You can trace every reported figure to a retained confirmation or ledger entry. Imports contain duplicates, unexplained transfers, negative balances, or unmatched deposits.
Product capability Not applicable; an exchange statement is the source record. The cited evidence does not establish which software has the broadest integrations, highest accuracy, or best current coverage. Verify those features before paying for a product.

Software is an organizational and calculation aid, not a legal requirement. The evidence does not establish that any particular product is universally best or that software produces a guaranteed filing result.

What does crypto tax software actually do?

A typical workflow imports transaction data, groups activity by asset and date, identifies likely transfers, matches disposals to acquisition lots, and produces summaries for tax forms. Its greatest value is consolidation: it can place several exchange accounts and wallet histories in one ledger so you can investigate gaps that no single exchange can see.

Consolidating records

Export the original transaction files from each exchange and wallet rather than relying only on a summary page. Coinbase, for example, says its Coinbase Taxes reporting excludes Coinbase Wallet and legacy Coinbase Pro activity. That illustrates why a statement from one service cannot be assumed to represent your entire digital-asset history.

Matching transfers

When the same asset leaves one account and arrives in another, software may try to match the withdrawal and deposit so they are not treated as two unrelated disposals. Review each match: timing differences, network fees, address changes, and partial transfers can cause an import to classify a movement incorrectly.

Reconstructing basis

If an asset was bought on another exchange or years earlier, the current exchange may know the incoming quantity but not the original cost. Software can help collect older confirmations and assign lots, but it cannot infer a defensible basis from a deposit alone. An unresolved basis item needs documentation or professional analysis before filing.

Preparing summaries

After review, software may produce totals that help populate Form 8949 and other applicable schedules. Treat the output as a draft: compare totals with broker statements, inspect high-value transactions, and preserve the source exports and reconciliation notes.

How do you file using exchange records without tax software?

A single-exchange workflow can work when the records satisfy the completeness tests above. Follow a documented sequence so the form does not become your only evidence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Download the complete history. Save the exchange’s annual tax statement, Form 1099-DA if issued, and the detailed transaction export for the entire tax year. Keep the original files unchanged.
  2. List every account and wallet. Confirm that no separate exchange login, custodial account, hardware wallet, or external wallet contains activity during the year. Include accounts that were closed during the year.
  3. Classify each entry. Separate purchases, sales, crypto-to-crypto exchanges, transfers, receipts, fees, and rewards. Do not assume that every line labeled “trade” has the same tax treatment.
  4. Establish basis before filing. For each disposed lot, document acquisition date, units, cost, and the records that support those figures. Resolve transferred-in assets separately because the receiving exchange may not have the original purchase record.
  5. Reconcile proceeds. Compare your calculated sales totals with the 1099-DA and investigate differences rather than forcing your ledger to match the form.
  6. Enter the appropriate forms. Use Form 8949 for applicable sales, exchanges, and other dispositions of capital assets; use Schedule 1 or another applicable form for other digital-asset income when required by the facts.
  7. Retain the audit trail. Store the statement, exports, acquisition evidence, calculations, and explanations for adjustments together with the filed return records.

How do you use software without losing control of the numbers?

Software reduces manual matching, but an import is not proof that the resulting classification is correct. A controlled workflow separates data collection, reconciliation, and filing review.

  1. Inventory sources first. Write down every exchange, wallet, and service used during the tax year before connecting anything. This prevents a polished report from silently omitting an account.
  2. Import original data. Prefer complete CSV or equivalent exports and preserve a local copy. Screenshots and annual summaries alone may omit the fields needed to establish basis.
  3. Review connection coverage. Confirm the import includes the relevant account, date range, asset types, and historical transactions. A connected account can still have an incomplete API history.
  4. Resolve exceptions. Investigate unmatched deposits, withdrawals without destinations, duplicate trades, negative holdings, missing acquisition lots, and balances that do not reconcile.
  5. Check classifications manually. Pay particular attention to transfers, swaps, rewards, fees, and assets received from outside the imported accounts. Correct a label only when your records support the correction.
  6. Compare with broker forms. Reconcile software proceeds and transaction counts with each 1099-DA. Explain legitimate differences, such as noncovered assets or activity outside the broker’s reporting scope.
  7. Export and retain the workpapers. Save the final transaction report, basis details, exception log, and source files so you can explain how the return figures were produced.

What happens when assets were transferred into an exchange?

An incoming transfer can show that the exchange received a quantity without showing what you originally paid. The receiving platform may therefore have proceeds for a later sale but no reliable acquisition basis. Coinbase specifically warns that assets transferred from an external wallet or exchange may be noncovered for its basis reporting when the necessary records are unavailable.

Gather the originating exchange confirmation, wallet transaction history, purchase date, quantity, and cost records. Keep evidence that links the incoming units to the original acquisition. If you cannot establish the lot history, do not treat a blank or default basis as confirmed; ask a qualified tax professional how to document the reconstruction and its uncertainty.

How are staking, lending, swaps, and other activity handled?

Not every digital-asset event is an ordinary sale. The IRS identifies wrapping and unwrapping, liquidity-provider transactions, staking, lending, short sales, and notional principal contracts among categories temporarily excepted from broker Form 1099-DA reporting pending further guidance. That reporting exception does not eliminate the taxpayer’s own obligation, and the IRS notes that it does not apply to rewards or other compensation earned in these transactions.

Separate these activities from simple exchange sales in your records. Record what you received, when you received it, its fair market value when required, and the transaction that generated it. The correct form and timing depend on the facts; a missing 1099-DA is not evidence that the activity is tax-free or need not be reported.

What are the most common exchange-statement mistakes?

  • Reporting only the form. A form is not the reporting obligation. Digital-asset income, gains, and losses must be reported whether or not a broker sends Form 1099-DA.
  • Using proceeds as basis. Proceeds identify what came from a disposition; they do not establish what the asset cost.
  • Assuming one platform sees everything. External wallets, another exchange, and legacy account products can fall outside the current platform’s tax report.
  • Ignoring transferred-in assets. The receiving exchange may not possess the purchase history needed to calculate basis.
  • Treating a reporting exception as a tax exemption. Temporary broker-reporting exceptions for certain transaction categories do not remove taxpayer reporting duties.
  • Trusting an unreviewed software import. Duplicate transactions, unmatched transfers, and incorrect classifications can flow into a final summary unless you inspect the exceptions.
  • Failing to preserve source records. The IRS requires records supporting positions on the return, including transaction details and basis information.

What records should you keep before filing?

Build a file that lets another person follow each reported number back to its source. At minimum, include:

  • Every Form 1099-DA received, plus the exchange’s annual tax summary.
  • Full transaction exports from every exchange, wallet, and relevant service.
  • Purchase confirmations showing dates, units, prices, and fees where available.
  • Records of deposits, withdrawals, and transfers that connect an incoming lot to its original acquisition.
  • Fair-market-value evidence for digital assets received as income or payment.
  • A list of unresolved items and the judgment used to address each one.
  • The final Form 8949 and other schedules, along with the calculations that produced their totals.

Keep records in their original form when possible and preserve a readable copy of any export that depends on an account login or an exchange’s temporary download window.

When should you involve a tax professional?

Consider professional advice when basis is missing, transactions span many wallets or years, records conflict, or you received income through staking, lending, liquidity provision, or other arrangements whose treatment is not clear from a broker statement. A professional can also help document a reasonable reconstruction when an exchange cannot supply historical basis.

Bring the complete source file, not just the 1099-DA. The quality of the advice depends on the transaction history and acquisition evidence available for review. State and non-U.S. rules are outside the federal guidance discussed here, so obtain separate advice if those jurisdictions apply.

What is the practical decision rule?

If one exchange handled every transaction and you can prove basis for every disposal, start with that exchange’s statement and detailed export. If any of those conditions fails, consolidate the records with software or a professional, then verify the resulting figures yourself. In every case, report the activity required by the IRS, calculate basis before filing, and retain the records that support the return.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to wait for Form 1099-DA before filing?

No. The IRS reporting obligation applies whether or not a broker sends the form. If no statement arrives, use your complete transaction records to determine the applicable sales and income and keep those records with your return documentation.

What should I do if my 1099-DA shows proceeds but no basis?

Do not enter proceeds as if they were gain. Obtain purchase confirmations, prior-exchange records, and wallet history, then reconstruct the acquisition lots; if the evidence remains incomplete, get tax advice before filing rather than using an unsupported default basis.

Are crypto-to-crypto swaps reported even when no dollars were received?

A swap can be a disposition of property, so the absence of cash does not by itself remove it from consideration. Record the assets given and received, their units and fair market values, and the basis of the asset disposed of before deciding which form applies.

Can tax software guarantee that my crypto return is correct?

No. Imports can omit accounts, duplicate transactions, or misidentify transfers and rewards. You remain responsible for checking source coverage, resolving exceptions, and approving the classifications and basis used in the filed return.
