Neither loan type is automatically cheaper or safer. A crypto-backed loan lets you borrow against eligible digital assets without selling them, but a price drop or rising interest can trigger a forced liquidation. An unsecured personal loan leaves your crypto unpledged, yet requires credit approval, recurring payments and enough income to support them. Compare offers using the same cash proceeds and realistic holding period, then check total repayment, every fee, collateral rules, state availability and what happens after a missed payment. The figures below are provider examples checked in October 2026, not guaranteed rates or market averages.
| Name | Best for | Key spec | Free plan / price | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Crypto-backed loan (Coinbase example) | Borrowers with eligible crypto who can tolerate collateral and liquidation risk | Collateral locked through Morpho on Base; Coinbase says no credit check for its collateral-backed product | Variable-loan processing fee: 2% on the first $250,000 and 1% above; fixed-loan fee: 1%; platform fees may also apply | Oct 2026 |
| Unsecured personal loan (Discover example) | Borrowers who prefer predictable installments and do not want to pledge crypto | No collateral; lender assesses creditworthiness, identity, address and income | Advertised APR 7.99%–24.99% for 36–84 months; Discover says no origination fee | Oct 2026 |
What is the practical difference between a crypto-backed loan and a personal loan?
A crypto-backed loan is secured by digital assets that the lender or protocol can sell if the loan-to-value (LTV) becomes too high. An unsecured personal loan is based on your credit and ability to repay; the lender does not take a lien over crypto held elsewhere. Security changes the downside rather than eliminating it: crypto borrowers face market and liquidation risk, while personal-loan borrowers face mandatory payments, late consequences and possible lender fees.
Coinbase says its eligible U.S. customers (excluding New York) can use supported collateral without a credit check; supported assets and fixed-versus-variable products depend on region and product terms. Discover describes a creditworthiness review and lists a minimum individual or household annual income of $25,000 for its own product, which is not a general rule for every personal loan. See the provider terms directly: Coinbase loan eligibility and mechanics and Discover personal-loan information.
How do the costs compare?
Compare the dollars you receive, not just a displayed rate. Put the same principal, term and repayment timing into each offer, and include fees that are added to the balance or charged separately.

- Coinbase documents a 2% processing fee on the first $250,000 of a variable-rate loan and 1% on the amount above $250,000. Its fixed-rate processing fee is 1% of the loan amount. These are provider terms, not market averages.
- The processing fee is added to principal and accrues interest. A separate platform fee may apply monthly to a variable loan or upfront to a fixed loan. Confirm the amount and whether it is financed before signing. Details are in Coinbase’s fee schedule.
- Coinbase’s collateral information describes an additional 4.38% liquidation penalty when collateral is liquidated. The same page uses 86% LTV as an example trigger; Coinbase’s loan-health documentation says the liquidation LTV (LLTV) varies by asset and market, so 86% is not universal. See the collateral terms.
- Ledn’s Dollar Loan help article describes a typical 50% initial LTV. Its calculator illustration shows a 70% notification LTV and 80% liquidation LTV, but Ledn says the calculator is not a commitment to lend. The article also lists a 2% administration fee outside its stated U.S. and Canada exception; do not add that fee to a U.S. estimate without checking your contract. Read Ledn’s Dollar Loan terms.
Personal-loan costs
- Discover advertises APRs of 7.99% to 24.99% and terms of 36 to 84 months on the cited page. This is a lender-published range, not a national average, a guarantee or a comparison with a current crypto-loan quote.
- Discover says it charges no origination fee. Other lenders may charge one, so read the individual disclosure rather than generalizing from Discover.
- Review the APR, amount deposited, origination or administration fees, monthly payment, number of payments and total repayment. A longer term can reduce the monthly bill while increasing total interest.
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau advises borrowers to compare offers from multiple lenders. Its fee guidance is available at consumerfinance.gov.
What happens to payments and maturity?
Payment design is a major source of risk. A loan with no scheduled installment is not free of interest or repayment obligations, and a fixed installment is not safe if the payment exceeds your budget.
Variable crypto loans
Coinbase says its variable loans have no scheduled minimum payment or due date, but interest continues to accrue. You still must repay principal, interest and applicable fees, and accumulating interest can raise LTV even if the token price does not move. Ask whether the provider can change the rate, how often interest is added and whether partial repayments reduce LTV immediately.
Fixed crypto loans
Coinbase’s fixed-rate loans mature on a stated date. If they are unpaid, liquidation can occur; an automatic conversion to a variable loan is conditional and is not guaranteed when variable-market liquidity is insufficient. Confirm the maturity date, grace period, conversion rule and exact liquidation process in your agreement.

Personal installment loans
An unsecured personal loan normally requires periodic fixed payments over the selected term. Missing one can lead to late fees, collection activity and credit damage under the lender’s reporting and contract rules. Set up a payment reserve before borrowing and test the payment against your income after taxes, housing, insurance and other debt.
How does collateral risk work?
LTV equals the outstanding loan balance divided by the collateral’s current value. If the balance grows through interest or the asset price falls, LTV rises. A provider can issue a warning and then sell collateral when the applicable LLTV is reached, often without waiting for a price recovery.
For an explicitly hypothetical illustration based on Ledn’s displayed calculator thresholds, borrowing $10,000 against $20,000 of BTC starts at 50% LTV. If the debt stays exactly $10,000 and BTC collateral falls to $12,500, LTV reaches 80%, a 37.5% decline in collateral value. Interest, fees, price gaps and your contract can change the actual trigger; the arithmetic is not a lender-published loss statistic.

- Price risk: A fast decline can move from warning to liquidation before you add collateral or repay.
- Interest risk: Variable rates and capitalized fees increase the balance and therefore LTV.
- Execution risk: Protocol congestion, thin liquidity or a sharp market gap can affect how collateral is sold.
- Protocol risk: Coinbase says borrowing occurs through Morpho on Base, so smart-contract security and liquidity are additional considerations beyond token volatility.
- Residual-debt risk: Read whether a sale fully satisfies the debt or whether you could still owe a shortfall after penalties and sale proceeds.
Who can qualify?
Eligibility is product- and jurisdiction-specific. Owning a token does not mean it is accepted as collateral, and meeting an income threshold does not ensure a personal-loan approval.

Crypto-backed eligibility
Coinbase says verified U.S. customers excluding New York may qualify when they hold supported collateral; available assets, regions and fixed-versus-variable options differ. Ledn describes BTC-backed Dollar Loans with a standard 12-month term and says state and loan-purpose restrictions apply. Its September 2026 eligibility article names California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Nevada, North Dakota, South Dakota, Tennessee, Washington and Washington, D.C. among restricted U.S. jurisdictions. Some otherwise eligible locations impose minimum-principal or commercial-purpose conditions. Check the live eligibility page before transferring assets.
Nexo describes a crypto-backed revolving Credit Line with automatic repayment from collateral when LTV rises sufficiently. Rates, permissions and advertising availability vary by jurisdiction and account conditions, so its description is an example of a product structure, not proof that a particular U.S. borrower can obtain it. See Nexo’s borrowing page only after confirming lawful availability where you live.
Personal-loan eligibility
Discover says it evaluates creditworthiness and requires identity, address and income information; its listed minimum individual or household annual income is $25,000 for that product. Other lenders may use different scores, debt-to-income limits, employment rules, loan purposes and state licenses. A prequalification check may use a soft inquiry, but read the lender’s disclosure to see whether a full application creates a hard inquiry.

A loan may let you avoid selling collateral at origination, but it does not make every later transaction tax-free. The IRS states that digital assets are property and that general property tax principles apply. If a lender liquidates collateral for U.S. dollars, that sale can create a reportable gain or loss based on your tax basis and holding period. The IRS FAQ is at irs.gov.

The cited IRS guidance does not settle every consequence of wrapping a token, transferring collateral, substituting assets or repaying a particular loan. Keep transaction IDs, dates, quantities, dollar values, fees, collateral movements and liquidation notices, then ask a qualified tax professional about your facts. Do not assume that a crypto-backed loan is tax-free.
How should you compare two actual offers?
- Match the cash proceeds. Compare the amount deposited into your bank account after any fee withheld or added to principal.
- Set the same realistic holding period. Model the date you expect to repay, not only the lender’s maximum term.
- Calculate total dollars paid. Include interest, processing or origination fees, platform or administration fees, late charges and any liquidation penalty.
- Stress-test the crypto offer. Recalculate LTV after a 20%, 40% and 60% collateral decline, and after several months of accrued interest. Identify the warning and liquidation thresholds for the exact asset and market.
- Stress-test the personal payment. Reserve several months of installments and test the payment against a lower-income month.
- Read exit terms. Confirm early-repayment treatment, maturity, automatic conversion, collateral release timing, sale procedure and whether a shortfall can remain.
- Verify eligibility. Check state, country, purpose, minimum principal, supported assets and any accreditation or account-verification requirement.
- Save the disclosures. Keep the personalized quote and contract, not just a marketing page, because rates and permissions can change.
Which option fits common borrower situations?
Crypto-backed borrowing may fit when
- You already hold eligible assets and can tolerate selling them at an unfavorable time.
- You have a credible repayment source and a reserve to add collateral or repay quickly during a downturn.
- Your location, asset and loan purpose are explicitly eligible.
- You understand the protocol, custody arrangement, variable-rate behavior and liquidation mechanics.
An unsecured personal loan may fit when
- You want to keep crypto entirely outside the transaction.
- Your income and credit support an affordable fixed payment.
- You value a defined maturity and predictable installment schedule.
- You can compare several personalized APRs and fee disclosures.
Neither may fit when
- The payment depends on an uncertain future bonus, token sale or refinancing.
- You would have to pledge nearly all of your liquid crypto to meet the desired cash amount.
- You have no emergency reserve for a payment interruption or collateral call.
- The provider cannot clearly explain fees, custody, liquidation, state eligibility or tax records.
What should you ask before signing?
- What exact APR or interest rate applies to my quote, and can it change?
- Which fees are charged upfront, added to principal or billed monthly?
- What is my initial LTV, warning LTV and liquidation LLTV for this asset and market?
- How much notice do I receive, and can liquidation happen during a rapid price move?
- After a liquidation, could I still owe a balance?
- When is collateral released after final repayment, and what network or withdrawal charges apply?
- Does the lender report payments to credit bureaus, and what happens after a late payment?
- Is my state, country and intended use eligible today, and are there minimum amounts?
- What records will I receive for interest, fees, collateral transfers and any sale?
How we compared the two loan types
The comparison uses the documented mechanics, fees, eligibility statements and risk disclosures of the named provider examples, plus CFPB guidance to compare personal-loan offers and IRS guidance on digital-asset property transactions. No marketwide statistic establishes that one category is cheaper, easier to obtain or safer. A borrower-specific answer requires live quotes and a contract reviewed for the borrower’s state and purpose.

Does a personal loan always charge an origination fee?
No. Discover states that its cited personal-loan product has no origination fee, while other lenders may charge one or deduct it from proceeds. Compare the amount deposited and total repayment in each personalized disclosure rather than assuming a marketwide rule.
Are crypto-backed loans available in every U.S. state?
No. Coinbase excludes New York in its stated U.S. eligibility, and Ledn lists additional restricted jurisdictions and possible purpose or minimum-principal conditions. State licensing and product availability can change, so confirm eligibility immediately before applying.
Is an advertised minimum APR the rate I will receive?
No. A headline or minimum APR is a starting point for qualified applicants, not a promise. Your personalized rate, term, fees and approval depend on the lender’s current underwriting and the information in your application.
