Neither CRT nor LCD is best for every retro gamer. A CRT offers the short-persistence motion and display behavior many original games were designed around, but it can flicker and appear dimmer. An LCD is often the more practical modern-screen choice, though older consoles may require a scaler or adapter, and motion blur and input lag depend on the display and settings. Choose by comparing the complete console-to-screen setup, not the panel type alone.
How CRT and LCD motion differ
CRT: clearer motion, with flicker as a trade-off
CRTs use a shorter image hold time than LCDs, which can make moving objects look closer to an ideal motion line. That behavior comes with trade-offs: the image can flicker and may be less bright. Whether that feels preferable depends partly on how sensitive you are to flicker.
LCD: brighter, steadier images, but possible blur or stutter
LCDs use sample-and-hold behavior: each frame remains visible until the next one is shown. This supports brighter images and reduces flicker, but motion blur and stutter can be more noticeable. These are broad technology differences, not a guarantee of how a particular display will look. RTINGS’ motion-cadence explanation describes the trade-off.
Input lag is not pixel response time
Input lag is the time it takes a display to receive a signal and show the image. Pixel response time is different: it measures how long pixels take to complete color changes. A display can perform differently on these two measures, so a response-time specification alone does not tell you how quickly a button press appears on screen. RTINGS defines monitor input lag as “The time it takes for a monitor to receive a signal and then display the image on screen” in its monitor input-lag methodology.

- [GREAT FOR HOME AND OFFICE] 17 Inch monitor for PS3/PS4/Xbox 360/Switch, PC monitors, Laptop extend monitors.
- [LED Monitor] 1280X1024 native resolution screen. LED Screen 250 nits brightness. 1000:1 Contrast Ratio, Aspect Ratio Standard (5:4)
- [Interface]] HDMI is a future-proof video standard that delivers true digital picture and audio clarity.
- [User-Friendly Features&Flexible Connectivity]The VESA 100mm Wall Mount compliant feature allows you to have the monitor mounted on the wall with the appropriate mounting accessory.
- A 17-inch 5:4 monitor offers extra vertical space, ideal for editing documents, coding, or browsing. For camera adaptation, it’s perfect for photographers reviewing high-res images or videos, especially with square or medium format compositions. Its aspect ratio and color accuracy enhance precision in post-processing workflows.
There is no sound basis here for assigning one input-lag number to all CRTs or all LCDs. RTINGS’ methodology gives an 8.33 ms minimum for its 60 Hz monitor input-lag test; that describes the test method, not a universal LCD result or a CRT-versus-LCD comparison.
Why the whole setup affects responsiveness
With a modern TV, latency can be introduced as the signal is acquired, processed, and displayed. The console, controller, adapters or scaler, and screen all form part of the chain. Processing features such as motion interpolation can add lag; Game Mode is intended to reduce it. Check the particular TV’s behavior at the resolution, refresh rate, and picture settings you actually plan to use. See RTINGS’ TV input-lag methodology for the factors involved.

Using an older console with an LCD
Older consoles may output analog video, while many modern displays expect HDMI. Depending on the console output and the TV’s inputs, you may need an adapter or a scaler to convert and scale the signal. Check the exact console connection and display inputs before choosing accessories.
What a scaler can—and cannot—do
A retro gaming video scaler can make an LCD setup easier by accepting older video formats and producing a signal a modern display can use. For example, the RetroTINK-4K Pro product page describes support for inputs from composite through digital, output up to 4K60, and CRT simulation. The page listed the product at $750.00 when accessed in 2026; price and availability can change.

A scaler’s CRT simulation is an effect on a modern display, not a physical CRT. The product documentation does not establish that its effects reproduce CRT motion behavior or that the complete signal chain has zero lag. Treat it as a signal-handling and image-processing option, and assess its performance in your own setup rather than assuming it will match a CRT.
Scanlines are only one visual element
Adding scanlines can suggest one part of a CRT’s appearance, but it does not recreate every characteristic. Shadow-mask appearance, color blending, and phosphor positioning also contribute to the look. An HDMI scanline generator also cannot directly accept every older console’s analog output; an adapter or upscaler may be needed first. GamesRadar+’s explanation of scanlines and CRT effects discusses these distinctions.

How to choose for your games and setup
| What matters | What to consider |
|---|---|
| Motion | Choose based on whether you prefer CRT short-persistence motion and can tolerate flicker, or LCD’s steadier image and potentially more noticeable blur or stutter. |
| Responsiveness | Compare input lag and pixel response time separately, using the exact display settings and signal path you will use. |
| Image appearance | Decide whether you want original CRT behavior, sharp pixels on an LCD, or simulated effects. Scanlines alone do not reproduce a CRT’s full appearance. |
| Connections | Match the console’s video output to the screen’s inputs; determine whether an adapter or scaler is needed. |
| TV processing | Check Game Mode and whether motion interpolation or other processing is active. Processing can affect latency. |
| Practical fit | Consider available space, display size and condition, and total cost. The sources cited here do not establish a comparative ranking or figures for these factors. |
If you are deciding between two specific displays, compare those sets with the same console, connection, resolution, refresh rate, and relevant picture settings. General claims about CRTs and LCDs cannot substitute for measurements of that particular chain.
