Neither a CRT nor a modern TV is automatically better for retro gaming. A compatible CRT is often the simpler match for a console with analog standard-definition output and gives the image style many players want. A modern TV can deliver a large, sharp picture, but whether it works well depends on the console’s signal, the TV’s inputs and processing, and—when needed—a scaler.

What looks better depends on the image you want

Why a CRT may suit original hardware

A CRT with the right input can display a compatible console’s analog signal without requiring a separate digital converter. It also provides the characteristic CRT presentation. Whether that look is preferable is subjective; the sources cited here do not establish that CRTs are visually superior for everyone.

“CRT” covers many sets. The evidence cited here does not provide model-by-model measurements, and it does not establish that every CRT is lag-free. A particular set’s inputs and processing can matter, especially for HD CRTs or models with additional processing.

What changes on a modern TV

Modern TVs use fixed-pixel displays and generally offer a large, sharp picture that can also serve current devices. But a retro console’s low-resolution or analog output may need conversion and scaling before a TV can display it. Scaling changes how the source image fits the screen, so the result may not match the CRT presentation you prefer.

“Supported resolutions” needs careful interpretation. RTINGS’ resolution testing concerns specified physical-input formats, such as digital 480p and 720p, and whether the TV displays them natively; it does not include upscaling. That is not proof that a particular TV accepts analog 240p or handles 480i from every console. Check the TV’s manual and actual input-format support rather than assuming that an HDMI port makes an older console compatible. RTINGS’ supported-resolution test explains the scope of its testing.

Will your retro console work on a modern TV?

Start with the whole signal path, not just the screen. Identify the video output your console uses, then confirm that the display accepts that connection and format. If the TV does not accept the signal directly, a compatible converter or scaler may be needed. A cable that fits a port does not by itself guarantee that the TV supports the signal coming through it.

  • Display: Confirm the actual input and supported format in the TV’s model-specific documentation.
  • Conversion: If the console’s output is not accepted, check whether the converter or scaler supports that input and provides an output the TV accepts.
  • Image handling: Consider how the TV scales or deinterlaces the converted signal, and whether you like the resulting picture.

Compatibility and processing differ among TV models, consoles, connections, and settings. The sources here do not verify 240p support for specific modern TVs, so a general claim that modern TVs either always work or never work would be misleading.

Does a CRT or modern TV have less input lag?

There is no universal CRT-versus-modern-TV latency figure established by the sources here. Input lag is not determined by the display label alone: the source, connection, image processing, and display all contribute to the end-to-end path.

RTINGS describes TV input lag in terms of image acquisition, video processing, and display time. Scaling and motion interpolation are examples of processing that can add delay; the processor and amount of processing affect the result. RTINGS identifies Game Mode as the most important general TV setting for reducing input lag, but that is not a guarantee that all delay disappears or that every set behaves alike. Its general explanation is at RTINGS’ TV input-lag test page.

RTINGS lists “< 15 ms” as a good value for its specified 4K-at-60-Hz input-lag test. That benchmark is for its modern-TV test conditions, not for retro consoles or a CRT comparison; it should not be treated as a prediction for your setup. For a particular TV, check independent testing for the exact model and input, and use Game Mode where available.

Using an external scaler with a modern TV

A scaler is one way to connect original analog-output hardware to a modern display. For example, RetroTINK lists its 5X Pro as accepting composite, S-Video, component, RGB, and SCART, with input formats including 240p and 480i, and producing digital output for an HDTV. These are the manufacturer’s specifications, not independent comparative test results. Check the current RetroTINK-5X Pro product page and compatibility notes for the console, cable, mode, and display you plan to use.

The 5X Pro manufacturer publishes latency specifications of approximately 0.25 frames in Framelock mode and 0.25–1.25 frames with Triple Buffering. Those figures describe the scaler’s stated latency, not the full end-to-end delay of a console, scaler, and TV together. The TV’s processing and the rest of the signal chain still matter.

RetroTINK also lists adjustable scanline functions and masks. These let users add CRT-like visual treatments; they do not establish that a scaler reproduces every aspect of a CRT. If planning a scaler-to-CRT chain instead, note that RetroTINK’s firmware log records the restoration of 240p output and addition of 480i output in a 2022 entry. It describes downscaling options as experimental or unsupported and says third-party HDMI-to-analog dongle operation is not guaranteed. Check the firmware update log for current details.

Choose by your setup and priorities

Your priority Likely fit What to verify
Original-style CRT image and a direct analog setup A compatible CRT Console and CRT input compatibility, set condition, and available space.
A large, sharp screen that also serves current devices A modern TV Compatibility with the console’s signal, model-specific Game Mode behavior, and image handling.
Modern TV with original analog-output hardware Modern TV plus a compatible scaler may fit Console output, scaler inputs and formats, TV’s digital input, desired output mode, and end-to-end latency.
Less extra equipment and setup A compatible CRT or a console that already outputs a supported digital signal Actual ports and format support before buying or connecting equipment.

These are decision aids, not a universal ranking. Model-specific compatibility and the image you enjoy should decide the setup. For a narrow standards reference, the ITU’s BT.601 recommendation covers studio encoding parameters for digital television in standard 4:3 and widescreen 16:9 aspect ratios; it does not settle subjective CRT-versus-modern-TV image preferences.
