You can create a desktop shortcut that opens Microsoft Edge in InPrivate mode by editing the shortcut’s Target field and appending inprivate. For a one-time private window, use Ctrl+Shift+N in Edge on Windows instead.
Create a desktop shortcut for Edge InPrivate
-
Pin Microsoft Edge to the taskbar or Start, or create an Edge desktop shortcut. If you need to create one, right-click the desktop and choose New > Shortcut, then follow the prompts to select Edge.
-
Right-click the Edge shortcut and select Properties. On Windows 11, you may need to choose Show more options first; Microsoft also notes that pressing F10 can expose the classic context menu.
-
Open the Shortcut tab and click in the Target field. Move the cursor to the end of its existing text, add one space, and type
inprivate, following Microsoft’s published shortcut instructions.Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

When you close all InPrivate windows, Edge clears browsing history, download history, cookies and other site data, cached images and files, passwords, autofill form data, site permissions, and hosted app data. Your downloaded files and favorites remain. InPrivate may use favorites, passwords, and form-fill data from the profile that opened it, and extensions you allow to run in InPrivate can run there too.

InPrivate is not anonymity or comprehensive privacy protection. Microsoft Support explains: “Other people using this device won’t see your browsing activity, but your school, workplace, and internet service provider might still be able to access this data.” Websites may personalize content during the session because cookies and site permissions remain until all InPrivate windows are closed; extensions may also save browsing history. InPrivate does not add ad blocking or protect you from malicious websites.
Some users may not be able to open an InPrivate window: family activity reporting or web-filtering settings can prevent children from using it, and an organization can block the feature through policy. See Microsoft’s Browse InPrivate in Microsoft Edge for its description of data handling and limitations.
