You can set up a PlayStation passkey for free from Account Management: sign in, open Security, turn on Sign in with Passkey, choose Create a Passkey, and complete your phone or computer’s unlock prompt. On PS5, you can start at Settings > Users & Accounts > Account > Security > Sign in with Passkey, scan the displayed QR code, and finish on your mobile device. PlayStation then confirms successful creation by email.

A passkey replaces your PlayStation password with verification on a device you already unlock using a fingerprint, face scan, or screen-lock PIN. A separate hardware security key is not required. Before switching, note that PlayStation says Require Password at Checkout is incompatible with accounts using passkeys.

What is a PlayStation passkey?

A passkey is a device-based sign-in credential that lets PlayStation verify you without asking you to type the account password. The device protects the credential behind its normal unlock method, such as a fingerprint, face scan, or screen-lock PIN. Your PlayStation account still has an email address and other account details; only the password step is replaced.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Passkeys are useful when you want to avoid reused passwords, password-manager lookups, or typing on a console controller. They are also tied to the devices or password managers where they were created, so recovery planning matters. PlayStation allows additional passkeys, which can help if you regularly sign in from more than one device.

A passkey is not the same thing as a separate physical security key. The ordinary setup uses a compatible phone, computer, or password manager, then verifies you through that device’s local unlock method. You do not need to purchase an accessory to follow either setup route below.

What do I need before creating one?

Most people can use a phone or computer they already own. PlayStation lists these compatibility requirements and recommendations:

  • Most mobile devices running iOS 16 or later or Android 9 or later. These are compatibility thresholds, not a guarantee that every device will work.
  • On Android, a Google account compatible with Google Play services. PlayStation recommends the phone’s default camera app for QR activation; some phones may need a QR-scanner app.
  • A current version of Safari, Chrome, or Edge when signing in through a browser.
  • Access to the email account associated with your PlayStation account, because PlayStation sends a confirmation message after successful creation.
  • A device screen lock. The exact biometric or PIN prompt depends on the operating system and device.

The iOS and Android numbers identify supported operating-system versions; they are not adoption figures or a promise that every model will work. If you are using an older device or browser, update it where possible before starting. Keep the device you plan to use nearby, especially if you choose the PS5 QR-code route.

You do not need to buy a security key. PlayStation acknowledges hardware security keys but warns that some may encounter issues and suggests synced mobile passkeys instead.

How do I create a passkey online?

The online Account Management route is the main setup method and works even when you are not near your console. It is also the simplest choice if you are already using a phone, tablet, or computer and want to complete setup in a browser.

  1. Sign in to PlayStation Account Management. Use the account whose password you want to replace.
  2. Open Security. This is the account-security area, not a console-only setting.
  3. Enable Sign in with Passkey. Turn on the passkey sign-in option.
  4. Select Create a Passkey. PlayStation presents the available creation method for your device.
  5. Follow the device prompts. Your phone, tablet, computer, or password manager may ask you to approve the creation using its normal unlock method.
  6. Check your email. PlayStation says a successful creation triggers a confirmation email.

If the browser offers a choice between creating the passkey on the current device and using another device, choose the option that matches where you want the credential stored. Do not approve a prompt you did not initiate. If you are unsure whether the prompt is part of your setup, cancel it and restart from Account Management yourself.

After setup, the passkey belongs to the PlayStation account rather than just the browser tab or console used to begin. The device or password manager holding it is what you will need when a sign-in asks for verification.

How do I set up a passkey from a PS5?

The PS5 route starts in the console’s account-security settings and hands the actual credential creation to a mobile device through a QR code. Choose it when you are already signed in on the PS5 and have your phone ready.

  1. On the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
  2. Select Users & Accounts.
  3. Choose Account, then Security.
  4. Select Sign in with Passkey.
  5. Use your phone to scan the QR code shown on the PS5.
  6. On the phone, select Create a Passkey and complete the device’s verification prompts.
  7. Watch for PlayStation’s confirmation email.

On Android, PlayStation recommends trying the default camera app to scan the activation code. Some phones may need a QR-scanner app. The QR scan is part of the setup you started on your own console; do not use a code sent by someone else claiming to offer account help, free rewards, or a shortcut.

  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

PlayStation’s security-settings guidance says account-security changes apply across devices and consoles. A passkey created from a PS5 is therefore an account credential, not one that works only on that particular console.

How do I sign in after creating the passkey?

At a supported sign-in screen, choose the saved passkey when PlayStation offers it, then complete the verification requested by the device that stores the passkey. The device may ask for a fingerprint, face scan, or screen-lock PIN.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

PlayStation lists passkey sign-in for:

  • PS5
  • PS4
  • The PlayStation website
  • The PlayStation App
  • Remote Play for Mac

PS3 and PS Vita use a device password instead of the newer passkey flow. PlayStation documents PS4 passkey sign-in, but does not provide a separate PS4-specific creation sequence; create the credential through Account Management or the documented PS5 QR route.

Signing in on a device that does not hold the passkey may involve selecting the passkey stored on another device or in a shared password manager, if that option is available to you. PlayStation describes reuse on devices sharing the same passkey or password manager, but it does not mean a passkey automatically synchronizes across every operating system or device combination.

Can I add or remove passkeys later?

Yes. Account Management includes a dedicated list so you can register more devices or remove an old credential. This is helpful if you want a second way to sign in before travelling or replacing a phone.

To add another passkey

  1. Sign in to Account Management.
  2. Open Security > Manage Passkeys.
  3. Select Create a Passkey.
  4. Choose Create on This Device or Create on Another Device.
  5. Complete the prompts on the selected device.

Multiple passkeys are useful when you have more than one phone, a computer, or a compatible password manager. PlayStation describes reuse on devices that share the same passkey or password manager, but that does not mean every credential automatically synchronizes across every operating system. Think about where the credential will be stored before choosing a creation method, and make sure you can still access the device or manager later.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To remove a passkey

  1. Open Account Management > Security > Manage Passkeys.
  2. Find the passkey you no longer trust or use.
  3. Select Remove next to it and confirm.

Remove credentials from devices you have sold, lost, or permanently given away. Keep at least one usable sign-in method before deleting an old passkey. If you are replacing a phone, a safer sequence is to register a passkey on the new device first, verify that it works, and then remove the credential associated with the old device if it appears separately.

What should I do if passkey sign-in fails?

Use PlayStation’s built-in fallback first rather than repeatedly retrying an unrecognized prompt.

  1. On the sign-in screen, select Can’t Sign In with Passkey.
  2. Choose PlayStation’s email or QR-code alternative.
  3. Complete the alternate verification and sign in.
  4. After access is restored, open Security > Manage Passkeys to add a replacement or remove the unusable credential.

  • Outdated browser: update Safari, Chrome, or Edge, then retry. If the browser still cannot use the passkey, use the alternate sign-in route.
  • Android and Windows pairing: some combinations may not complete the cross-device handoff. Try the email or QR fallback, or create a passkey on a different compatible device.
  • Remote Play for Mac: PlayStation lists this as a possible troubleshooting case. If passkey authentication fails there, PlayStation recommends reverting to password sign-in.
  • QR activation problems: on Android, use the default camera app as PlayStation recommends; if it cannot recognize the code, a QR-scanner app may be needed.

Do not scan a QR code sent by a stranger who claims to be helping with your account. A QR code can direct your device into an approval flow, so start setup from PlayStation Account Management or your own PS5 settings. Protect the email account connected to PlayStation as well, since it may be involved in account recovery.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the alternate method does not work, avoid disabling account protections or trying an unofficial workaround. Use PlayStation’s Online Assistant if you cannot authenticate on any device.

What if I lose the phone that holds my passkey?

You may still be able to recover the account if another device has the same passkey or the same password-manager synchronization. Use that device to sign in, then register a new passkey before removing access from the lost phone.

  1. Try a second device that shares the passkey or password manager.
  2. Sign in using that device’s normal verification method.
  3. Open Security > Manage Passkeys and create a new passkey on a device you control.
  4. Remove the passkey associated with the lost phone if it is listed separately.

A second device is not guaranteed to have the same credential, so this depends on how the passkey was saved or synchronized. If no other device can authenticate and the fallback does not work, contact PlayStation’s Online Assistant. Keep the email account connected to PlayStation protected as well, because it is part of the account-recovery path.

How do I switch back to a password?

You can return to password-based authentication if passkeys do not fit your devices or if you need a checkout setting that requires a password.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Sign in to Account Management.
  2. Open Security.
  3. Disable Sign in with Passkey.
  4. Create a password when PlayStation prompts you.

After the change, use the password sign-in method on supported devices. Keep any passkeys you still trust only if you expect to enable passkey sign-in again; otherwise remove them through Manage Passkeys. If you cannot sign in to make the change, use the sign-in fallback or contact PlayStation’s Online Assistant rather than assuming that removing the passkey from a phone changes the account setting.

What is the checkout-setting limitation?

PlayStation states that Require Password at Checkout is not compatible with an account that has passkeys set up. This is a PlayStation Store purchase-protection option, separate from the authentication method used to enter the account.

If requiring a password at checkout is important to your household, review that trade-off before enabling passkeys. You may prefer password-based authentication, or you may decide that the device verification required by the passkey is the better fit for your account. This limitation is specifically about the checkout setting; it does not mean a passkey is itself a purchase, payment method, or security key.

Should I use a hardware security key?

No separate hardware key is necessary. A passkey-capable phone, tablet, computer, or compatible password manager can provide the credential.

PlayStation’s support guidance says some hardware security keys may encounter issues and recommends considering synced passkeys on mobile devices. Because PlayStation does not establish compatibility for a specific hardware-key model in the cited guidance, do not assume that a particular key will work. If you already own one, use PlayStation’s documented fallback if setup or sign-in fails. For most readers, trying a device they already own is the straightforward, no-purchase starting point.

Account Management or PS5: which setup route is better?

Both routes create an account-level passkey. Choose based on where you are starting, not on a difference in the resulting credential.

Route Best starting point What you do Important detail
Account Management Phone, tablet, or computer Security > Sign in with Passkey > Create a Passkey Does not require access to a PS5; confirmation arrives by email.
PS5 QR setup A PS5 already signed in to the account Settings > Users & Accounts > Account > Security > Sign in with Passkey, then scan the QR code Creation finishes on the mobile device; the setting applies across the account.

Use Account Management if you are already on a supported browser or do not have a PS5 available. Choose the console route if you are at your PS5 and want the QR handoff to your phone. Neither route requires a separate security key, and PlayStation does not describe one as more secure than the other.

What should I check before choosing passkey sign-in?

  • Confirm that your phone or computer meets PlayStation’s stated operating-system and browser requirements.
  • Make sure you can unlock the device that will store the passkey.
  • Verify access to the PlayStation account email.
  • Decide whether your checkout routine depends on Require Password at Checkout.
  • Plan a backup device or recovery route before removing your only other sign-in method.
  • Scan only QR codes displayed by your own PS5 or opened from PlayStation’s official sign-in flow.

Passkey sign-in can reduce the need to type a password at the console, but it still depends on having access to a compatible device and its local unlock method. Password sign-in may be the more practical choice if you rely on the checkout password requirement, regularly use a device without access to your passkey, or need the documented device-password method on PS3 or PS Vita.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

PlayStation does not publish an adoption rate, breach-reduction percentage, or setup-time statistic for passkeys in its support material. The iOS 16 and Android 9 figures are operating-system compatibility thresholds, not measurements of how many players use the feature.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are passkeys?

A passkey is a device-based credential that lets PlayStation verify you without asking you to type your account password. You approve sign-in using the local unlock method on the device holding the passkey, such as a fingerprint, face scan, or screen-lock PIN.

Where can I sign in with a passkey?

PlayStation lists passkey sign-in for PS5, PS4, the PlayStation website, the PlayStation App, and Remote Play for Mac. PS3 and PS Vita use a device password instead.

Can I create a passkey directly in the PlayStation App?

The app is listed as a place where you can sign in with a passkey, but PlayStation’s documented creation paths begin in Account Management or the PS5 security menu. If the app does not show a creation control, open Account Management in a supported browser instead.

Will a PS4 display the same passkey setup menu as a PS5?

PlayStation documents passkey sign-in on PS4 but does not publish an equivalent PS4-specific creation sequence. Set up the passkey through Account Management or the PS5 QR-code route, then use it on the PS4 sign-in screen.

Does a passkey remove my PlayStation email address?

No. Your account email remains the account identifier and recovery contact. The passkey replaces the password entry used to authenticate the sign-in.

What happens if I lose my phone? Can I still sign in on another device?

If another device has the same passkey or can access it through the same password manager, use that device to sign in and register a replacement passkey. If no other device works, contact PlayStation’s Online Assistant.

Can I have multiple passkeys on my account?

Yes. Go to Account Management, then Security > Manage Passkeys > Create a Passkey. You can choose Create on This Device or Create on Another Device. Synchronization depends on the passkey or password manager; do not assume every credential syncs across every operating system.

Can I switch back to password-based authentication after using a passkey?

Yes. In Account Management, open Security, disable Sign in with Passkey, and create a password when prompted. Use the sign-in fallback or PlayStation’s Online Assistant if you cannot access the account to change the setting.

What happens if my device has no fingerprint or face scanner?

A passkey can use the device’s screen-lock PIN or another supported local unlock method. The exact prompt is controlled by the operating system, so options vary by phone, computer, and security settings.

Do I need to buy a hardware security key?

No. A separate hardware security key is not required. PlayStation warns that some hardware security keys may encounter issues and suggests considering synced passkeys on mobile devices.

Can I keep Require Password at Checkout enabled with a passkey?

PlayStation says Require Password at Checkout is not compatible with an account that has passkeys set up. If you rely on that PlayStation Store purchase-protection setting, consider the trade-off before switching.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

For most players, the free Account Management route is the easiest starting point: enable Sign in with Passkey, create the credential on a device you can unlock, and confirm it by email. Use the PS5 QR route if you are already at your console. Before switching, plan for recovery and check whether you rely on Require Password at Checkout, which PlayStation says is incompatible with passkeys.
