Yes, if you want a new score-chasing sequel; no, if you expect an upgrade or a bundle. Cotton Reboot! High Tension! is a separate game, not downloadable content for Cotton Reboot! and not a remaster of its stages. It adds Over Tension, enemy capture, playable Macaron, and a new campaign. Buy it if you enjoy manipulating crystals and pushing for high scores; skip it if you only wanted the original Cotton game or need a PC version. The 2026 Cotton Reboot! console re-release is a separate product, too—it does not turn an existing copy into High Tension!.
Is Cotton Reboot! High Tension! worth buying if you already own Cotton Reboot!?
For an owner who likes Cotton Reboot!’s crystal-and-Fever scoring, High Tension! is a reasonable companion purchase: it keeps the side-scrolling shooter foundation but builds a new campaign around riskier scoring and additional combat systems. It is not necessary to own both to play either one, and High Tension! does not include the original game’s X68000 mode or its remake of the 1991 stages.
That distinction answers the main buying question. You are paying for another game with a different campaign and play loop, not for access to content missing from your copy of Reboot!. Clear River Games calls it the “natural sequel and evolution” of the remake; Netto’s Game Room describes it as a companion rather than a replacement.

- You enjoyed shooting crystals to change their colour and build elemental magic.
- You want to learn Over Tension, capture enemies, and take on a new six-stage campaign.
- You are interested in a busier, more bullet-hell-oriented take on Cotton’s scoring loop.
Skip it if you want classic Cotton, a long story, or PC support
- Your main reason for buying Reboot! was its X68000 original mode. That mode is not included in High Tension!.
- You found Reboot! Arrange mode’s effects difficult to read, or you prefer a less visually intense shooter.
- You are looking for a lengthy narrative campaign. The story is brief and is treated by reviews as flavour around the shooting.
- You need a verified PC or Steam edition. Western and Japanese platform materials list consoles, not PC.
Is High Tension! DLC, a remaster, or a sequel?
It is a full sequel in the Cotton Reboot! series, developed as a separate game. BEEP’s description says it was crafted from the ground up, and coverage at 33bits likewise distinguishes it from a new version of Reboot!.

The distinction matters if you already own the 2021 game. Reboot! reworks Success’s 1991 Cotton: Fantastic Night Dreams, also known as Magical Night Dreams Cotton. Its 16:9 Arrange mode remakes the original stages with redrawn sprites and revised scoring, while its X68000 mode preserves the original computer version. High Tension! instead has its own story and stages.
The games are separate SKUs, and they were not sold as a dual pack at the Western launch. Buying one does not unlock the other. If you see the 2026 Cotton Reboot! console release while shopping, do not mistake it for High Tension!: it is still the remake. Its added Nightmare Mode, former DLC characters Appli and Needle, Super Attacks, new voice recordings, and Time Attack are Reboot! features, not a substitute for the sequel.
What is new in High Tension! compared with Cotton Reboot!?
The most important additions are Over Tension and enemy capture. They change how a run can be played: Over Tension offers greater scoring at greater danger, while capture turns some enemies and objects into weapons. A new playable character and a story about rebellious Willow candy round out the sequel’s main additions.
Over Tension trades safety for score
Both games use a Fever-style scoring window, but High Tension! adds a more dangerous second phase. While in Willow Fever, collect Willow candy to enter Over Tension. Clear River Games says enemy attacks become more extreme during it, while hidden magic becomes available to raise your score. Gematsu’s BEEP-derived description says reaching a full gauge activates Over Tension and doubles the score.
This is an optional risk-and-reward decision, not a condition you must accept to finish the game. Players who would rather prioritize survival can avoid the candy and leave the escalation unused. Netto’s Game Room also reports an option to keep Over Tension active for the whole game, for players who want that kind of challenge from the outset.
Capture lets Cotton turn threats back on their owners
The capture system, called “とんでけキャプチャー” in Japanese coverage, lets Cotton grab certain opponents and throw them or their attacks back into the action. Netto’s Game Room reports that bombs can be caught and thrown, and that most small enemies are capturable—including treasure chests and fairy cages. Large enemies and bosses cannot be captured. The mechanic has been compared by Tech-Gaming to the enemy-weapon idea in Gaiares.
Macaron adds a different magic option
Macaron is a new playable character, with freeze magic as the roster addition most often highlighted in coverage by Tech-Gaming, Gematsu, GameWith, and 33bits. Fire Dragon and Lightning also return as named magic in publisher materials, alongside the hidden magic tied to Over Tension.

Tea Time rewards the opposite habit
In earlier Cotton games, avoiding every falling teacup secretly rewarded a player. Tech-Gaming reports that High Tension! reverses the incentive: collect plenty of cups to earn the reward. It is a small system change, but it is another reason not to assume that a familiar-looking stage or scoring element works exactly as it did in Reboot!.
What does each game include—and what does High Tension! leave out?
Reboot! is the better fit for someone who wants both a modern remake of the 1991 game and the X68000 original in one package. High Tension! is the choice for a fresh sequel campaign and its newer systems. Their overlap is in the genre and some scoring fundamentals, not in campaign content.
| Question | Cotton Reboot! | Cotton Reboot! High Tension! |
|---|---|---|
| What kind of game is it? | A remake of the 1991 Cotton shooter, with a separate X68000 original mode. | A standalone sequel with a new campaign and systems. |
| What stages are included? | The original game’s six stages in the remake’s Arrange mode, plus its original mode. | Six main stages, each with a mid-boss and stage boss, according to Netto’s Game Room. |
| What is the scoring focus? | Arrange-mode gem manipulation, Jewel Fever, and Black Crystal/purple-bomb score techniques. | Crystals, Willow Fever, Over Tension, enemy capture, and score escalation. |
| What is the visual style? | Arrange uses redrawn sprites; X68000 mode retains pixel-art presentation. | A more modern line-art look with heavier screen effects and more on-screen action. |
| Does it include the other game? | No. High Tension! is a separate purchase. | No. It does not include Reboot! or its X68000 mode. |
The original mode, Arrange remake, and Reboot!-specific scoring techniques are not gained by buying High Tension!. Conversely, its Willow rebellion, Over Tension, capture system, Macaron, and sequel stages are not included in the 2021 Reboot!. For owners who want both eras, owning both games makes sense; for someone who only wants the old-school original, the sequel does not fill a gap.
How different does High Tension! feel to play?
It is the more intense and visually crowded game of the two. Reboot! Arrange can get busy, but its basic identity remains a remake of a 1991 shooter. High Tension! pushes harder toward bullet-hell patterns, score chasing, extra effects, and the risk of escalating the screen with Over Tension.
That makes the sequel a stronger match for players who enjoy managing hazards while pursuing score systems, but a less comfortable choice for someone who found Arrange mode’s clutter distracting. Tech-Gaming’s 2026 review said the visual commotion can be difficult to read for players unaccustomed to modern shooter chaos. 33bits also noted that on-screen clutter can impair readability, especially during Over Tension.
There is a more serious accessibility consideration. Digitally Downloaded’s Alex Kidman warned that the flashing patterns could trigger a seizure within seconds for someone with an issue with flashing patterns. That warning is specific to the intensity reported in High Tension!; anyone with photosensitivity concerns should take it seriously and check the game’s settings and platform accessibility options before playing. The available information does not establish that a particular setting eliminates the risk.
How long is the campaign, and what keeps it replayable?
Neither game is built around a long story campaign. Both are short arcade shooters whose lasting appeal comes from improving a run, pursuing a one-credit clear, revisiting score attack, and trying other modes or characters.

Netto’s Game Room describes High Tension! as having six main stages, with a mid-boss and stage boss in each. Digitally Downloaded estimates that a player can get through the plot in about an hour when using continues freely. Reboot!’s six stages and final boss take roughly 30 minutes for an initial credit-fed clear, according to Nintendo Life’s 2021 review.

- Story: A campaign with cutscenes.
- Arcade: A run that can continue into two loops, with an option to start on loop two.
- Time Attack: A two-minute default run or a longer five-minute run. It is an arena-style score mode, not a timed race through the campaign stages.

- Stage Select and tutorial: Options for selecting a stage and learning the mechanics.
Several difficulty settings are available, including Very Hard. Default lives can be configured; Netto’s Game Room reports that Cotton can take two deaths before a continue by default, with unlimited continues available. That flexibility helps separate learning the campaign from chasing a stricter arcade clear.
The short campaign length should not be read as a promise of a particular amount of replay value. If you enjoy score systems, learning patterns, and refining a clear, the structure is the point. If you want a long narrative or a large sequence of unique stages, the campaign’s scale is a poor match regardless of which Cotton game you choose.
Which platforms, editions, and prices are available?
For the Western release, High Tension! launched digitally on 22 October 2026 for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5. Physical Switch and PS5 editions are scheduled for 10 December 2026. The standard edition launched in Japan on 31 July 2025 for Switch, PS4, and PS5; Japanese coverage says the PS4 version is digital-only on that market’s PlayStation Store.
| Product and format | US price | EU price | Date or platform note |
|---|---|---|---|
| High Tension! digital | $24.99 | €22.99 | Western digital launch: 22 October 2026; Switch, PS4, and PS5. |
| High Tension! physical | $39.99 | €34.99 | Switch and PS5; scheduled for 10 December 2026. |
| Cotton Reboot! digital | $29.99 | €29.99 | Different game; includes the remake’s content, not the sequel. |
| Cotton Reboot! physical | $49.99 | €44.99 | Switch 2 edition. |

These are US and EU prices quoted in Clear River Games launch copy and reported by Tech Gaming Report and Attack The Culture in 2026. They are not a guarantee of the price in every country or retailer. The digital sequel is listed at a lower MSRP than the digital remake, but it is still a separate purchase.

For Japan, Gematsu’s account of Weekly Famitsu’s 2025 listing gives a standard edition price of 6,380 yen and a limited edition at 10,780 yen. GameWith lists the cartridge at 5,800 yen before tax and notes the Japanese PS4 release is digital-only. Japanese limited-edition items reported in coverage include a yunomi tea cup, booklet, soundtrack, and treasure-chest-style box; these are not listed as Western physical-edition contents.
Is High Tension! on Steam or PC?
No verified PC, Steam, or Xbox edition appears in the Western launch materials, Clear River Games’ product listing, or Gematsu’s platform list. The documented Western platforms are Switch, PS4, and PS5. Cotton Reboot! has a PC/Steam history, but that does not establish a PC release for its sequel.

If you play only on PC, do not buy Reboot! on the assumption that High Tension! will follow it there. A future port is not confirmed by the available platform information. Console buyers should also check the listing for their region and exact console before purchasing, particularly when comparing the original game’s Switch 2 re-release with the sequel’s Switch version.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you buy Reboot! or High Tension! first?
Start with Reboot! if you want to see Cotton’s classic game in both remake and X68000 forms, or if you are new to the series and prefer a game rooted in the 1991 original. Start with High Tension! if its new systems and more modern bullet-hell presentation are the reason you are interested. The sequel is designed to be a full game, not a DLC add-on that requires the earlier title.
For someone who owns the 2021 Reboot!, the decision is narrower: ask whether its scoring loop is something you want to learn again in a new game. If yes, High Tension! offers a companion run rather than a duplicate campaign. If you mainly played the X68000 mode and have little interest in Over Tension or dense score-focused shooting, your existing game already serves that preference better.
How have reviewers assessed the sequel?
Published scores point to a generally positive response, while also identifying visual readability as a qualification. Tech-Gaming gave High Tension! 83 percent overall in 2026, with Gameplay 85, Controls 80, Content 80, Aesthetics 85, Performance 80, and Value 85. 33bits scored it 85 percent, and Game Critix rated it 4.5. These are individual outlet scores, not an aggregate rating.
For context, Tech-Gaming rated the Switch 2 edition of Cotton Reboot! 84 percent overall, with Value at 90; 33bits gave that 2026 re-release 84 percent. Those ratings concern separate products, so they do not mean that the sequel replaces the remake. Japanese Amazon.co.jp listings showed 4.2 out of 5 stars from 13 ratings for the Switch limited edition and 4.3 out of 5 from 26 ratings for the standard edition, as reported in the 2026 material. Those are customer ratings for Japanese editions, not critic scores.
The clearest practical takeaway from the reviews is not a single score: critics praised the sequel’s additions and its foundation, while some warned that its effects and bullet patterns can become hard to parse. Your tolerance for that visual density is likely more important than a small difference between review ratings.
What else is worth knowing before choosing an edition?
The Japanese title is コットンリブート ハイテンション! BEEP is identified as developer and publisher in Japan, while Western launch coverage credits Clear River Games as Western publisher and also credits Studio Siesta / Rocket Engine. The copyright line names BEEP / SUCCESS. The game is rated PEGI 7, supports one player, and has Japanese voice audio with English text. OneDigital notes that Spanish text is not included.

The soundtrack has contributions from Hiroyuki Kawada and chiptune unit YMCK. Launch coverage credits Kawada with work associated with Time Crisis, Ridge Racer, and Super Smash Bros.; Gematsu also cites Valkyrie no Bouken and Youkai Douchuki. Netto’s Game Room notes that two soundtrack versions are available in-game. BEEP said the voice cast was chosen from more than 200 applicants.
Those details may matter if you are choosing between physical editions or care about audio and language, but they do not change the core purchase decision: the sequel’s value for an existing owner lies in its new campaign and systems, not in repackaging the original remake.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does High Tension! have English text?
Yes. The game is listed with Japanese voice audio and English text. OneDigital reports that Spanish text is not included.
Can I play High Tension! without playing Cotton Reboot! first?
Yes. It is a standalone sequel rather than an expansion that requires the earlier game. Its story follows a new Willow rebellion, so prior knowledge is not a prerequisite to play.

The listed player count is one, so the available edition information does not indicate a local co-op mode. The game is presented as a single-player shooter.
What is in the Japanese limited edition?
Japanese coverage lists a yunomi tea cup, booklet, soundtrack, and treasure-chest-style box. Those extras are reported for the Japanese limited edition and are not confirmed as contents of the Western physical release.
