To turn a PDF into a Word document online with Adobe Acrobat, open its PDF-to-Word converter, select your PDF or drag it into the drop zone, let Acrobat convert it, then download the result. Acrobat can also recognize text in scanned PDFs, but you should check the converted file’s layout and text before relying on it. Adobe’s web documentation lists a 100 MB maximum for its Export a PDF workflow and identifies several types of PDFs that it cannot convert.
How do I convert a PDF to Word online with Adobe Acrobat?
Use Adobe’s PDF-to-Word converter in a browser. The online path is designed to convert the selected PDF into an editable Word document; the exact download experience may depend on whether Acrobat asks you to sign in.
- Open Adobe’s PDF-to-Word converter. Use the online converter page in your browser.
- Select your PDF. Click Select a file or drag the PDF into the drop zone. Adobe’s page describes both options.
- Let Acrobat convert it. The online converter processes the file into an editable Word document.
- Download the result. Save the converted file to your device, and sign in if Acrobat requests it.
- Open and inspect the Word file. Check both the text and the page layout before editing or sharing it.
Adobe’s converter page reported “Over 41M* files uploaded!” when retrieved in 2026 and defined the period as “Over an 18-24 month period.” That is Adobe’s reported upload volume, not an independently measured conversion-success or accuracy rate.

Can I use Acrobat’s web export workflow instead?
Yes. Acrobat on the web offers a separate Export a PDF path, and its documentation lists Word formats including DOC, DOCX, and RTF. This route is useful if you are already working in Acrobat’s web interface.

- In Acrobat on the web, choose Convert > Export a PDF.
- Select the PDF you want to export.
- Choose a Microsoft Word format.
- Convert the file, then download it.
Adobe’s documented Acrobat export sequence is similar in the Acrobat application: open the PDF, choose Export PDF, select Microsoft Word, choose Word Document, click Export, and save as DOC or DOCX. The available controls can differ by Acrobat experience, so follow the labels shown in the version you are using.
Which should I choose: DOC, DOCX, or RTF?
For most current Word editing, choose DOCX. DOC remains an option when you need compatibility with an older Word version, while Acrobat on the web also lists RTF as an export format.

If you are unsure, DOCX is the sensible starting point for a modern Word workflow. Choose DOC or RTF only when a compatibility requirement or the receiving application calls for it.
Can Acrobat convert a scanned PDF into editable Word text?
Yes. Adobe says Acrobat runs text recognition automatically when a PDF contains scanned text. OCR, or optical character recognition, identifies text on image-based pages so it can become searchable and editable in the Word output.

OCR recognition does not guarantee that the converted document will reproduce every visual detail perfectly. A scan may contain text as page images rather than as selectable characters, and the conversion has to interpret both the words and their placement. After conversion, check names, dates, numbers, and any text that is important to the document’s meaning.
What should I inspect after OCR?
- Headings and paragraphs: Confirm that headings were recognized as intended and that paragraphs have not been joined or split in a confusing way.
- Tables: Check that values remain under the correct headings and that rows and columns are readable.
- Columns: Make sure text from multiple columns has not been interleaved or placed in the wrong reading order.
- Headers, footers, and footnotes: Verify that recurring page details and notes appear in useful places and remain associated with the right text.
- Page breaks and unusual fonts: Look for awkward breaks or characters that were misread, especially where the source uses a distinctive typeface.
- Embedded images: Confirm that images are present and that surrounding text still makes sense.
For a document where exact wording matters, compare the first and last pages with the PDF and search the Word file for key names, dates, and figures. These checks help catch recognition or layout problems that may not be obvious from a quick glance.
Is Adobe’s PDF-to-Word converter free, and will it ask me to sign in?
The available information does not establish a specific price or a universal free-use allowance for the online converter. Adobe’s online instructions say sign-in may be requested for later downloads or repeated use, so do not assume that every download or repeat conversion will be available without signing in.
Adobe lists Acrobat Pro as a paid plan with conversion and editing capabilities, but that does not by itself establish the current terms for every online conversion. Check the converter’s current page and the account prompt you see before relying on repeated use or a particular download option.

What are the file-size limit and exclusions?
Adobe’s Acrobat web documentation states a maximum file size of 100 MB for Export a PDF. The same documentation says the tool can convert most PDFs, including scanned documents, but it names several exceptions.
- Password-protected PDFs.
- PDFs with permissions that prevent printing, copying, or altering.
- PDF Portfolios.
- PDFs generated from Adobe Illustrator.
If a file exceeds the documented size limit or falls into one of those categories, the web Export a PDF workflow may not accept it. A permissions restriction is not simply a formatting problem: Acrobat identifies files whose settings prevent the relevant actions as excluded. Use a version of the document you are authorized to convert and whose permissions allow it.
Adobe also says that in this workflow the original PDF is not saved as a copy when a converted version is created; the newly converted version is what Acrobat stores. Keep your own original if you need an unchanged copy for records or later comparison.

Do a targeted review rather than assuming that an editable file is an accurate replica. Conversion can preserve useful content while still requiring cleanup where the PDF has complex layout or scanned text.

- Compare the first and last pages. Check that the beginning and end of the document are present and that page-level elements have not disappeared.
- Review the most complex pages. Inspect tables, columns, headers, footers, footnotes, unusual fonts, and embedded images.
- Search for critical details. Find names, dates, and key numbers in the DOCX and compare them with the PDF.
- Correct the Word document where needed. Fix reading order, spacing, page breaks, or table structure that does not carry over cleanly.
- Re-save or re-export if needed. If the converted output is not workable, make the necessary corrections or try the conversion again, then review the new file.
Adobe’s official pages do not publish an independently measured accuracy percentage or a guaranteed processing time. Treat the converted document as a starting point for review, not as proof that every character and layout detail has been preserved.

First distinguish a file the web tool excludes from a file that converts but needs formatting cleanup. The remedies are different: an unsupported or restricted file may not be eligible for export, while a complex but accepted document may produce an editable result that needs adjustment.
The file will not upload or export
- Check whether it is larger than Adobe’s documented 100 MB Export a PDF maximum.
- Check whether it is password-protected, a PDF Portfolio, generated from Adobe Illustrator, or protected by permissions preventing printing, copying, or altering.
- If Acrobat requests sign-in, follow the prompt before trying a later download or repeated use.
The text is present but the layout is messy
Inspect complex page elements individually. Tables, multi-column sections, headers, footers, footnotes, page breaks, and unusual fonts are all called out as areas to check after OCR or conversion. Correct the structure in Word if the text is usable but its arrangement is not.
Some scanned words appear wrong or missing
Search the Word output for important names, dates, and figures, then compare each occurrence with the PDF. OCR is intended to recognize scanned text, but Adobe does not publish a guarantee that every scan will be read without errors.

What does Adobe’s upload figure tell me?
Adobe’s online converter page reported more than 41 million uploaded files at the time it was retrieved in 2026, and Adobe attached the period description “Over an 18-24 month period.” The figure indicates volume reported by Adobe; it does not say how many files converted successfully, how accurate the results were, or how long a conversion takes.

Can I convert several PDFs to Word at once in Acrobat online?
The described online instructions cover selecting or dragging a PDF and converting it, but they do not establish a batch-conversion feature. Check the current converter interface for a multiple-file option rather than assuming one is available.
Will the PDF itself be changed when I make a Word file?
Adobe says the original PDF is not saved as a copy in its Export a PDF workflow; Acrobat stores the newly converted version. Keep a separate copy of the PDF if you need to preserve the source independently.
