If CONTROL Resonant has no sound, is too quiet, distorted, crackling, stuttering, cutting out, delayed, or coming from the wrong direction, first play audio in another game, video, or app. A fault that follows every app usually involves the operating system, output device, driver, HDMI path, or physical connection; a fault confined to CONTROL Resonant calls for the game-specific checks below. On PC, also remember that the game has no in-game output-device selector, so Windows controls where its sound goes. These steps follow Remedy Entertainment’s platform guides for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, plus Microsoft’s Windows audio guidance.
Change one variable at a time and retest the same scene or menu. That makes it clear whether a setting, device, connection, or game state actually changed the symptom.
What should I test first when CONTROL Resonant audio fails?
Close the game and play a video, another game, or a system sound. Note whether the same symptom occurs, then use the result to choose the branch that fits.
| Test | What you observe | Most useful next direction |
|---|---|---|
| Another game, video, or app | The sound is also missing, quiet, distorted, delayed, or misdirected | Inspect the shared output device, Windows or console settings, driver, HDMI chain, headset, speakers, television, receiver, or connection. |
| Another game, video, or app | Everything else sounds normal | Keep the investigation inside CONTROL Resonant: restore its audio baseline, check platform routing, and test the game state. |
| Another headset or speakers | The symptom follows one device | Concentrate on that device, its cable or wireless link, its driver, and any software that processes its sound. |
| A different connection | Bluetooth fails but wired, USB, or HDMI works, or a hub fails while a direct connection works | The connection path or an intermediate adapter is implicated; continue testing with the working path before replacing equipment. |
This isolation approach is the first recommendation in Remedy’s PC and console instructions. It prevents a Windows, television, or headset problem from being mistaken for a game defect.

How do I reset CONTROL Resonant’s audio settings on PC?
Open Options → Audio in CONTROL Resonant and establish a neutral baseline before experimenting with effects. Check every level, restore the values below, restart the game, and listen to the same location again.
| Setting | Neutral test value | What the option does |
|---|---|---|
| Master Volume | Set to an audible level | Controls the overall game signal. |
| Effects Volume | Set to an audible level | Controls environmental and gameplay effects. |
| Speech Volume | Set to an audible level | Controls dialogue. |
| Music Volume | Set to an audible level | Controls the score and music. |
| Controller Speaker Volume | Check that it is not diverting the sound you expect to hear elsewhere | Controls the supported controller speaker output. |
| Dynamic Range | Default | Provides the reference balance between quiet and loud sounds for diagnosis. |
| Mono Audio | Off, unless you need all channels combined | Combines channels and removes left-right directionality. |
| Hyperacusis Filter | Off | Reduces higher-frequency sounds; it is an accessibility option, not a repair for a defective signal. |
| Bass and Treble | 0 | Removes extra equalization from the initial test. |
| Night Mode | Leave unchanged for the first comparison | Narrows the difference between quiet and loud sounds and reduces bass, so it can make a normal mix seem unusually restrained. |
These controls are intentional listening options. After the baseline works, enable Mono Audio if you need channels combined, use the Hyperacusis Filter to reduce high-frequency content, or choose Night Mode when you want a smaller loudness range. Do not use those preferences to diagnose a missing channel until you have first tested with the neutral values.
How do I make Windows send CONTROL Resonant to the right device?
CONTROL Resonant does not include an in-game output-device selector. Select and test the destination in Windows, then confirm the game’s per-application route.
- Close CONTROL Resonant.
- Open Windows Settings → System → Sound.
- Under the output section, select the headset, speakers, monitor, television, or receiver you actually want to use. Confirm it is not muted and raise its volume to a known audible level.
- Launch CONTROL Resonant and play a section with predictable sound.
- While the game is running, open the Windows Volume Mixer. Find CONTROL Resonant, make sure its volume is not muted, and verify that its output is the intended device rather than a monitor, controller, virtual cable, or disconnected headset.
If the game is visible in the mixer but silent, close it completely after correcting the route and relaunch it. Windows can retain a per-application route until the process starts again.
What fixes distorted, crackling, stuttering, or cutting-out sound on PC?
Those symptoms commonly arise from processing features, an unsupported device format, a driver problem, an unstable connection, or another application taking control of the audio path. Test the following in order, returning each setting to its original value if it makes no difference.

1. Turn off Windows processing temporarily
- Open Settings → System → Sound and select the active output device.
- Temporarily disable Audio enhancements.
- Temporarily disable Spatial sound.
- Retest CONTROL Resonant. If the fault disappears, re-enable the features one at a time to identify which processor conflicts with the game or device.
Enhancements and spatial processing can be useful when they work with a particular driver, but they add another stage to the signal. Microsoft lists enhancements, unsupported formats, and driver faults among causes of distorted or crackling Windows audio; its guidance is at Fix distorted or crackling audio in Windows.
2. Test a format the device and driver support
In the output device’s Windows properties, open the format or advanced settings and try another supported default format. Remedy gives 24-bit, 48,000 Hz as an example sampling-rate test and recommends using the device’s Test control. The example is not a universal requirement: use only formats that the connected headset, sound card, television, receiver, and driver explicitly support. If a new format makes the test sound worse, return to the previous supported value.

3. Remove intermediate connections for one test
Reconnect the preferred headset or speakers directly to the PC, bypassing a dock, USB hub, adapter, capture device, or switch. If you normally use Bluetooth, test wired, USB, or HDMI audio when available. This is an isolation test, not a requirement to purchase a new headset. Also disconnect unused Bluetooth, HDMI, controller, virtual, and USB audio devices so Windows has fewer possible destinations.
4. Close software that captures or alters audio
Exit virtual mixers, equalizers, surround utilities, voice changers, streaming or recording programs, manufacturer audio-control panels, and any application that uses a Bluetooth headset microphone. Reopen only CONTROL Resonant and test. A Bluetooth headset can change operating modes when its microphone is active, so testing with the microphone-using application closed helps establish whether that mode change is involved.
5. Correct a driver change
If the problem began immediately after an audio-driver update, open Device Manager → the audio device → Properties → Driver. Use Roll Back Driver only when Windows offers that option and the timing matches the failure. Otherwise download the driver for the exact PC, motherboard, sound card, headset, or audio device and your Windows version from its manufacturer, install it, and restart. Avoid substituting a driver intended for a different model.

6. Check the game installation and Windows audio service
If only CONTROL Resonant remains affected and audio content appears absent, run the launcher’s file-verification command. In Steam, open the game’s Properties, choose Installed Files, and select Verify integrity of game files. In Epic Games Launcher, open the game’s menu, choose Manage, and select Verify. Verification replaces damaged or missing files without deliberately changing unrelated games.

How do I fix missing, delayed, distorted, or misdirected audio on PlayStation 5?
First test the PS5 home screen and another game or application. If they are normal, concentrate on CONTROL Resonant’s available audio and accessibility levels, restore its defaults, and test again. If the home screen and other software also fail, inspect the console’s output device and the complete HDMI chain instead.
- Update CONTROL Resonant and PS5 system software.
- Restart the console rather than resuming the game from a suspended state.
- Review the game’s audio and accessibility settings, then restore defaults for a clean comparison.
- In the PS5 sound-output settings, test Linear PCM first. Remedy recommends it as a basic signal for diagnosis.
- After audio is stable, try another format only if every component in the HDMI chain—console, cable, television or monitor, soundbar, receiver, and headset adapter—supports it.
Linear PCM is a diagnostic starting point, not a claim that it is the best permanent format for every home-theater setup. A delayed or wrong-direction signal can involve processing elsewhere in the HDMI chain, so compare the basic format before changing multiple receiver or television modes at once.
How do I fix silent, delayed, distorted, or unbalanced audio on Xbox Series X|S?
Use another game or app and, if possible, another headset, television, soundbar, or receiver. When only CONTROL Resonant is affected, inspect its settings and the game’s resume state; when all software is affected, begin with the shared output device and console format.

- Review the game’s audio settings and test the affected scene after a fresh launch.
- Open Settings → General → Volume & audio output.
- For HDMI and headset output, test Stereo uncompressed as the basic format.
- Only after stereo works, return to surround or spatial output if the entire connected chain supports that mode.
If the sound changes when you move between a television, soundbar, receiver, and headset, document which path works. That comparison tells support whether the game or one output path is the more likely fault domain.
How can I identify a bad headset, cable, or audio connection?
Use controlled substitutions rather than changing several components together. The comparison table shows what each result can establish without assuming that any single test proves a hardware failure.
| Comparison | If the symptom changes | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| CONTROL Resonant versus another app | Only the game fails | Prioritize game settings, routing, files, and platform-specific state. |
| Preferred headset or speakers versus another available device | Only one device fails | Inspect that device, its cable, firmware or driver, and its processing software. |
| Bluetooth versus wired, USB, or HDMI | Only Bluetooth fails | Investigate the wireless link, Bluetooth profile, microphone use, or interference; the wired path is a useful temporary workaround. |
| Direct connection versus hub, dock, adapter, or capture device | Direct works | Leave the intermediate device out while checking its power, firmware, compatibility, or port. |
| Audio processing on versus off | Only processed output fails | Identify the enhancement or spatial feature that conflicts, then decide whether to leave it disabled. |
| Current format versus a basic supported format | Basic format works | The prior format or an HDMI-device compatibility boundary needs attention. |
| Xbox resumed session versus fully quit and relaunched | Fresh launch works | The retained Quick Resume state was a plausible contributor. |
Use equipment you already own for these comparisons. Remedy’s guidance treats a wired, USB, or HDMI connection and a second headset or speaker set as optional diagnostic alternatives, not purchases required to play.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to buy a wired headset to troubleshoot CONTROL Resonant?
No. Use your existing speakers, headset, USB device, or HDMI path first. A wired or USB connection is simply a useful comparison when Bluetooth is suspect, and another device is helpful only if one is already available.
Why can audio be delayed even when the game’s volume is correct?
Delay can be introduced after the game, such as by television, receiver, soundbar, wireless, or other output processing. Compare a basic console format or a direct PC connection before changing several display and audio modes together.
Should I leave Night Mode or Mono Audio enabled for normal play?
That depends on your listening needs, not on a universal repair rule. Night Mode compresses loudness and reduces bass, while Mono Audio combines channels and removes directional placement; use either deliberately after a neutral diagnostic test.
What should I record before reporting an Xbox audio bug?
Note whether fully quitting the game and launching it again changes the result, and record whether HDMI and headset output behave differently. Include the output format shown under Volume & audio output and whether another game or app has the same symptom.
