To use OneHop in either Cursor or Cline, select the client’s custom or OpenAI-compatible connection, set the base URL to https://api.onehop.ai/v1, paste your complete active OneHop API key, and enter a model ID that your OneHop account currently allows. Save the settings, then run a small coding request. Cursor and Cline share the same endpoint, key-handling rules, and model-ID requirement; the main difference is where each client exposes its provider settings.
OneHop describes itself as a unified gateway for AI model access. Because its available models and identifiers can change by account and over time, do not copy a model name from an old tutorial. Use the exact identifier shown for your account, including capitalization, prefixes, punctuation, and version text.
What do Cursor and Cline need from OneHop?
Both clients need three matching values: the OpenAI-compatible endpoint, a valid OneHop key, and an available model identifier. If any one is wrong, the client may report authentication, model, connection, or request errors.

OneHop also describes support for OpenAI, Anthropic, and Vertex protocols. This guide covers the OpenAI-compatible path used by Cursor and Cline with a OneHop key; do not assume that a protocol-specific connection uses the same fields or behavior.

How do I connect OneHop to Cursor?
Cursor’s labels can change between releases, but the required fields are the same: enable its custom or OpenAI-compatible provider, point it to OneHop, authenticate with the key, and select an allowed model.
- Open Cursor settings. Go to the area labeled Models or the custom-provider/OpenAI-compatible controls. If the wording differs, look for settings that allow a custom base URL rather than Cursor’s built-in providers.
- Enable the custom connection. Turn on the option that lets you supply an OpenAI-compatible API or provider override.
- Enter the base URL. Paste
https://api.onehop.ai/v1exactly. Keep the/v1suffix; omitting it can send requests to the wrong path. - Paste the key. Enter the complete active OneHop API key with no quotation marks, leading or trailing spaces, or line breaks.
- Enter a model ID. Copy an identifier currently shown as available in your OneHop account. Do not substitute a familiar model name, remove a prefix, or change punctuation.
- Save and test. Send a small coding request, such as asking Cursor to explain a short function or make a one-line change in a disposable file. A successful response confirms that the endpoint, key, model, and account permissions work together.
What should I check if Cursor has several model fields?
Use the field that controls the model sent to the custom provider, not a separate preference that only affects Cursor’s built-in services. If Cursor displays both a provider and a model selector, keep the provider on the custom/OpenAI-compatible option and put the OneHop identifier in the model field. A model that appears in a general list is not necessarily enabled for your OneHop account.
How do I configure OneHop in Cline?
In Cline, choose OpenAI Compatible as the API provider. Then supply the same OneHop endpoint, key, and account-specific model ID.

- Save and verify. Ask Cline to perform a small, reversible coding task. A short request is enough to test authentication and model access before you start a larger edit.
Does Cline sign-in replace the OneHop key?
Cline’s extension and command-line tools can support account-token authentication when you sign in. That is a separate route from this setup. For OneHop, keep the provider set to OpenAI Compatible and authenticate with the OneHop API key rather than assuming a Cline account token can authorize OneHop requests.

What is different between the Cursor and Cline setups?
The connection values are shared, but the provider controls and verification workflow are presented differently.

If one client works and the other does not, compare the literal values rather than assuming the key is defective. The most common differences are a missing /v1, a hidden space in the key, a different model identifier, or a provider selector left on the client’s default service.
How should I handle and store a OneHop API key?
Treat the key like a password. Keep it in a password manager or another private store, and enter it only in the client’s protected settings field.
- Never commit the key to Git or any other repository.
- Do not put it in application source code, a browser-facing application, screenshots, issue trackers, chat messages, or email.
- Check copied text for spaces, line breaks, and quotation marks before saving.
- Limit access to the OneHop account and key to people who need it.
- If the key appears in a public or shared location, revoke it in OneHop and create a replacement immediately.
A local environment variable can be safer than hard-coding a secret, but it still needs protection: keep the variable outside the repository, prevent it from appearing in logs, and make sure diagnostic output does not print the value. The client’s own secret field is preferable when it is available.

Why does authentication fail?
An authentication error usually means the key is invalid for the endpoint or was copied incorrectly. Check the key and account before changing unrelated settings.
- Confirm that the key is active and belongs to the intended OneHop account.
- Paste the entire key again, removing leading or trailing spaces, line breaks, and quotation marks.
- Verify that the base URL is exactly
https://api.onehop.ai/v1. - Make sure the client is using the custom/OpenAI-compatible provider rather than a built-in provider that expects a different credential.
- If the key may have been exposed, revoke it, create a new one, and update the client.
Retest with a small request after each correction. If the replacement key also fails, compare the account, provider selection, and endpoint in the client rather than repeatedly pasting the same value.
Why does the client say “model not found”?
That message means the request reached a service but the supplied model identifier is not recognized or is not enabled for the account.
- Open the model list or account information supplied by OneHop and copy the current identifier directly.
- Compare every character, including uppercase and lowercase letters, hyphens, slashes, colons, prefixes, and version suffixes.
- Check that the model is available to the specific OneHop account whose key you entered.
- Replace any model name copied from an older guide; availability and naming are account- and time-dependent.
- Save the client settings again and send a minimal test request.
Do not “simplify” a long identifier. A gateway may use prefixes to distinguish providers or deployments, and removing them can produce a model-not-found response even when the underlying model exists.

What should I do about connection, timeout, or request errors?
When the key and model look correct, investigate the network path and the complete request configuration.
- Connection error: Confirm that the base URL includes
/v1and that the client is not appending an incompatible path. - Timeout: Check firewall, proxy, VPN, and corporate-network rules that could block or delay requests to the OneHop endpoint.
- Failure after changing models: Recheck the model’s account access, the endpoint, and the key status; a new model selection can expose a permissions issue that the previous model did not.
- Intermittent behavior: Repeat a small request and note whether the failure occurs before authentication, during model selection, or while generating a response. That distinction helps separate network problems from account or model problems.
When testing behind a company proxy, use the same network conditions under which you plan to work. A configuration that succeeds on a home connection may still fail inside a managed network with different firewall or proxy rules.

Use a short, reversible task rather than immediately asking the model to edit a large project.
- Open a disposable file or a small existing function that you can restore easily.
- Ask for a bounded operation, such as explaining the function, identifying one bug, or proposing a one-line change.
- Confirm that a response arrives from the intended model and that no authentication or model error appears.
- Review the generated change before accepting it.
- Only then use the connection for larger refactors, multi-file edits, or automated actions.
This check validates the full path: the client’s provider selection, OneHop endpoint, key authentication, model permission, network route, and response handling.

What should I record when troubleshooting?
Record configuration facts without recording the secret itself. Useful notes include the client and version, the provider label selected, the endpoint path, the exact model ID, the time of the failure, and the error text with the key redacted.
- Write the key as a masked value, such as its first and last few characters only.
- Note whether the error occurs in Cursor, Cline, or both.
- State whether a different model or network was tested.
- Remove project code and personal data before sharing diagnostic logs.
These details make it easier to distinguish a client-setting mistake from an account-access or network problem without creating another secret-exposure risk.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a OneHop key with both Cursor and Cline?
The same key can be entered in each client if the OneHop account permits the requests, because both use the same OpenAI-compatible gateway path. Keep each client’s provider and model settings independent so a change in one does not silently alter the other.
