To connect a compatible Bluetooth controller, turn on the controller, put it into Bluetooth pairing mode, open Settings > Bluetooth on your iPhone or iPad, and tap the controller when it appears under Other Devices. Then open the game and check its controller settings if buttons do not behave as expected. Xbox and PlayStation controllers use different pairing shortcuts, and a successful Bluetooth connection does not guarantee that every game supports every button or feature.
What is the quickest way to connect a Bluetooth controller?
The standard Apple setup takes only a few steps, but the controller must be discoverable before it can appear in Bluetooth settings.
- Turn on the controller.
- Use the controller’s documented Bluetooth pairing or discovery shortcut. The correct buttons differ by model.
- On the iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Bluetooth and turn Bluetooth on.
- Wait for the controller’s name to appear under Other Devices, then tap it.
- When it moves to My Devices and shows as connected, open the game.
- If the game does not respond, open its own controller or input settings and confirm that controller support is enabled.
Apple’s general guidance is to use the pairing shortcut documented for the exact controller, then select it in the Apple device’s Bluetooth list. Some controllers can also pair automatically when connected with a USB cable that carries both data and charging signals.
How do I pair an Xbox controller with an iPhone or iPad?
Apple lists specific Xbox families as supported: the Xbox Wireless Controller with Bluetooth (model 1708), Xbox Wireless Controller Series S, Xbox Wireless Controller Series X, Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2, and Xbox Adaptive Controller. Compatibility is model-specific, so do not assume that every Xbox-branded gamepad has Bluetooth support.

Xbox pairing steps
- Press the controller’s Xbox button to turn it on.
- Press and hold the separate Connect button for a few seconds. The Xbox logo button is for power; the Connect button starts wireless discovery.
- On the iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > Bluetooth.
- Tap the Xbox controller when it appears in the device list.
If the controller was previously connected to a console, computer, or phone, it may try to reconnect there instead of entering discovery mode. Hold the Connect button again until the controller is discoverable, and temporarily unpair it from the other device if necessary.
Which Xbox model should I look for?
| Controller family | Apple-listed support | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox Wireless Controller with Bluetooth, model 1708 | Supported | Confirm the model number and that Bluetooth is available. |
| Xbox Wireless Controller Series S | Supported | Use the Connect button to enter pairing mode. |
| Xbox Wireless Controller Series X | Supported | Verify current controller firmware. |
| Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 | Supported | Game support for advanced inputs can vary. |
| Xbox Adaptive Controller | Supported | Check the game and any attached controls for feature support. |
This list describes the families Apple identifies for its devices; it is not a blanket approval for every revision, third-party derivative, or older Xbox controller.
How do I connect a PS4 DualShock 4 to an iPhone or iPad?
Apple lists the PlayStation DualShock 4 as supported. Pairing requires the PS and Share buttons, not the Create button used by newer PlayStation controllers.

- On the iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Bluetooth.
- Select the DualSense or DualSense Edge when it appears.
If the controller pairs but is not usable, press and release the PS button. A game may still ignore some DualSense features even though the basic Bluetooth connection succeeds.
How do I pair another compatible Bluetooth gamepad?
For a controller outside the Xbox and PlayStation families, the principle is the same: use that model’s documented pairing shortcut, then choose it in Settings > Bluetooth. Read the controller’s manual or manufacturer support page for the exact button combination; there is no universal pairing command for all gamepads.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBefore you start
- Charge the controller or connect it to power.
- Turn off nearby consoles, computers, phones, or tablets that may automatically reconnect to it.
- Check that the exact model advertises iPhone or iPad support, rather than only support for a console or PC.
- Install available firmware updates using the manufacturer’s supported update method.
When a USB cable can help
Some controllers pair automatically when connected directly with a USB cable that supports data as well as charging. A charge-only cable cannot complete that process. The iPhone or iPad model and connector determine whether you also need a separately purchased adapter, such as a compatible USB-C or Lightning adapter.
Can I use a wired controller with an iPhone or iPad?
Yes, when the controller and Apple device support a wired connection. You may need an adapter, and the cable must carry data, not just power.
What you need to check
- Device connector: identify whether the iPhone or iPad uses USB-C or Lightning.
- Controller connector: check whether it uses USB-C, Micro-USB, or another plug.
- Adapter support: choose an adapter that matches both connectors and supports USB data.
- Power: some combinations may need additional power, especially when the controller draws more than the Apple device can provide.
- Game support: a wired connection still does not make every game recognize every input.
After connecting the cable and any required adapter, unlock the iPhone or iPad and open the game. If nothing happens, disconnect and reconnect with a known data-capable cable, then check whether the controller appears under Settings > General > Game Controller on iOS 16 or later or iPadOS 16 or later.

Why is my controller connected but not working in the game?
Bluetooth pairing only establishes communication between the controller and Apple device. The game decides which controllers, buttons, audio functions, lights, and other features it supports.
Recommended Free Tools
The game has no controller support
Some iPhone and iPad games accept touch input only. Check the game’s App Store description, help pages, or in-game settings for controller support before assuming the controller is faulty.
Only some buttons work
Apple states that support for specific buttons and features, including a controller’s audio jack or lights, varies by controller and by app. A game may support movement and basic buttons while ignoring paddles, motion controls, headset functions, or other advanced inputs.
The layout feels wrong
Xbox-style controllers use an asymmetrical stick layout, while PlayStation-style controllers use symmetrical sticks. That is a preference and layout difference, not evidence that one controller is universally better. If the game offers a control-layout menu, remap buttons there rather than changing the iPhone’s Bluetooth connection.
Customize supported controls in iOS or iPadOS
On iOS 16 or later and iPadOS 16 or later, open Settings > General > Game Controller, select the connected controller, and choose Default Controls. The available customization depends on the controller and operating system; it cannot add support for inputs that the game does not recognize.

Use two controllers with Buddy Controller
Apple’s iPhone and iPad controller features include Buddy Controller, which can combine input from two supported controllers. This is useful when two people share control or when one player needs a second gamepad for accessibility, but the game must support the feature and the connected controllers still need to be recognized by the system.
What should I do if the controller will not connect?
Follow the fixes in this order, starting with the shortest and least disruptive. Test the connection again after each step so you know which change solved the problem.
- Move the devices close together. Keep the controller and iPhone or iPad nearby and remove objects or equipment that may block the wireless signal.
- Restart the controller. Turn it off completely, turn it back on, and enter pairing mode again.
- Charge it. A low battery can prevent discovery or cause an immediate disconnect. Connect it to power and retry.
- Update both sides. Install available iOS or iPadOS updates and update the controller’s firmware through the method provided for that exact model.
- Forget and re-pair. Go to Settings > Bluetooth, tap the information button beside the controller, choose Forget This Device, confirm, put the controller into pairing mode, and select it again.
- Unpair it from other devices. Consoles, computers, and other phones can capture the controller’s connection. Turn Bluetooth off on those devices or remove the controller from their saved-device lists before retrying.
- Reduce Bluetooth congestion. Temporarily turn off unneeded Bluetooth accessories. Apple recommends reducing active Bluetooth devices when interference may be preventing a stable connection.
If Bluetooth is unavailable or grayed out
If no Bluetooth accessory connects, or the Bluetooth control itself is unavailable or grayed out, the problem may extend beyond the controller. After the basic restart, update, and re-pair steps, Apple recommends contacting Apple Support.
If the controller connects and immediately drops
- Charge the controller fully and retry.
- Forget the controller and pair it again with other nearby devices disconnected.
- Check for a controller firmware update.
- Try a wired data connection if the controller and Apple device support one.
- Test another supported accessory to determine whether the issue follows the controller or the iPhone/iPad.
Will one controller work with every iPhone and iPad game?
No. Compatibility has three separate layers: the Apple device must support the controller family, Bluetooth or USB must establish a connection, and the individual game must implement the inputs you want to use.
| Decision factor | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Device compatibility | The exact controller model appears in Apple’s supported guidance or the manufacturer’s compatibility information. | Brand names alone do not identify every hardware revision. |
| Pairing simplicity | The controller has a clear, documented Bluetooth shortcut. | A controller that cannot reliably enter discovery mode is difficult to set up. |
| Connection flexibility | Bluetooth, wired USB, or both; connector and adapter requirements. | A wired fallback can help when wireless pairing is unreliable. |
| Feature support | The game supports the buttons and advanced features you need. | Audio jacks, lights, paddles, motion, and other functions may vary by app. |
| Ergonomics and layout | Xbox-style asymmetrical sticks or PlayStation-style symmetrical sticks. | Choose the arrangement that matches your hands and game preferences. |
| Multi-device use | Whether the exact model can switch between devices and how it does so. | Some controllers can store more than one connection and use controller buttons to disconnect from one device and reconnect to another. |
Before buying, verify the exact model, current firmware requirements, the Apple device’s connector, any adapter needed for wired use, and support in the games you actually play.

How do I disconnect or switch a controller between devices?
To stop using a controller temporarily, open Settings > Bluetooth, tap the information button beside it, and choose Disconnect when that option is available. To remove its saved pairing, choose Forget This Device instead; you will need to put the controller back into pairing mode next time.
Some controllers support multiple saved devices. Apple notes that these controllers can use buttons on the controller to disconnect from one device and reconnect to another, but the exact shortcut is model-specific. Follow the controller manufacturer’s instructions rather than assuming the Xbox or PlayStation shortcut applies.
Connection checklist for a new controller
- Confirm the exact model is compatible with iPhone or iPad.
- Charge the controller and install its available firmware update.
- Turn off or disconnect devices that may automatically reclaim the controller.
- Use the correct pairing shortcut: Xbox Connect, DualShock 4 PS + Share, or DualSense PS + Create.
- Open Settings > Bluetooth and select the controller under nearby devices.
- Check the game’s controller settings after pairing.
- On iOS 16 or later or iPadOS 16 or later, review Settings > General > Game Controller for supported customization.
- If pairing fails, forget the device, reduce Bluetooth interference, update both devices, and try again.
Frequently Asked Questions
How can I tell whether an Xbox controller has Bluetooth?
Check the exact model number and its documentation rather than relying on the Xbox logo or product name. Apple specifically identifies model 1708 and the Series S, Series X, Elite Wireless Controller Series 2, and Adaptive Controller families in its supported guidance.
Does connecting a controller change the iPhone’s touch controls?
Usually, touch controls remain available unless the game changes its interface when it detects a controller. The game determines whether touch, controller input, or both can be used at the same time.
Can I connect a controller while AirPods or another Bluetooth accessory is connected?
Often yes, but every active wireless device adds another possible source of congestion or routing behavior. If pairing or stability is poor, temporarily disconnect unneeded accessories and retry.
Why does my controller work in one game but not another?
Controller support is implemented separately by each app. One game may recognize only basic buttons, while another may support remapping or additional inputs; a working Bluetooth connection does not make support universal.
