Wotchi adds an in-process alerting step to an Express error pipeline: it can normalize and redact failures, group repeats, and send notifications while your application continues to produce its normal HTTP error response. The practical integration is small: install the package, create a Wotchi instance, place its Express middleware after your routes, and retain your existing final error handler. The creator’s August 12, 2026 tutorial describes console, Telegram, and HTTPS webhook destinations, with alertThreshold: 1 useful for a local smoke test. Treat the reported 0.1.0-beta.6 release and Node.js >=18.18.0 requirement as time-sensitive claims; verify the package metadata before deploying.
What does Wotchi add to an Express error pipeline?
Wotchi is presented as a lightweight, in-process notification layer for Node.js services. Instead of sending a message for every occurrence of the same failure, it is intended to process an error, apply normalization or redaction, group repeated events, and notify a configured destination when the grouping policy says an alert is due. This addresses the common progression from a noisy terminal or log stream to a customer report: the team needs a signal that a failure is happening without turning every request into a separate page.
The package does not replace Express error handling. Your routes still pass failures to the middleware stack, and your application still decides the status code and response body. Wotchi is an observation and notification step inserted before the final application handler.

The behavior and API described here come from Ivan Kabar’s creator tutorial, “Adding Low-Noise Error Alerts to an Express API with Wotchi”. Because the tutorial describes a public beta rather than an independently validated package build, check the current npm metadata and package documentation for changes before relying on any option or compatibility claim.

What do I need before installing Wotchi?
You need an existing Express application, a supported Node.js runtime, and credentials only if you choose a destination that requires them. The tutorial reports these compatibility points:
| Item | Reported support | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Node.js | >=18.18.0 |
Author-reported in the August 12, 2026 tutorial; verify the current package engine requirement. |
| Module systems | ESM, CommonJS, and TypeScript | The tutorial says each is supported; use the import style that matches your project and confirm current exports. |
| Express | Versions 4 and 5 | Also author-reported and subject to change as the beta evolves. |
| Package state | Public beta 0.1.0-beta.6 |
A version claim from the tutorial, not a guarantee that this is still the latest release. |
For a reproducible deployment, pin the version you have reviewed in your lockfile, run your normal integration tests, and check the package’s current release information before upgrading. Do not put Telegram tokens, webhook secrets, or similar credentials in source control; provide them through your deployment secret store or environment configuration.
Where should the Wotchi middleware go in Express?
Register it after all routes that may call next(error) and before your final application error handler. Express evaluates middleware in stack order, and error-handling middleware is identified by four parameters: (err, req, res, next). The official convention is documented in Express’s middleware guide.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Putting Wotchi before the routes means it will not see failures that occur later in the stack. Putting it after the final handler means the response may already have been sent. The intended sequence is:
- Request and ordinary middleware run.
- A route succeeds or forwards an error with
next(error). - Wotchi receives the error and applies its grouping and notifier logic.
- Your final error handler logs the failure and sends the client response.
Keep all four parameters on the final handler, even when one is unused. Express uses the four-argument shape to recognize error middleware.
How do I install and wire up a minimal alert?
The creator’s example uses the beta package and a console notifier. The following is the smallest complete ESM setup, including a route that deliberately forwards an error so you can see the flow locally.

npm install express @futurewindai/wotchi@beta
import express from "express";
import { consoleNotifier, createWotchi } from "@futurewindai/wotchi";
import { wotchiErrorHandler } from "@futurewindai/wotchi/express";
const app = express();
const wotchi = createWotchi({
service: "orders-api",
environment: "development",
grouping: { alertThreshold: 1 },
notifiers: [consoleNotifier()],
});
app.get("/orders/:id", (_request, _response, next) => {
next(new Error("Database query failed"));
});
// Register after routes, before the final error handler.
app.use(wotchiErrorHandler(wotchi));
app.use((error, _request, response, _next) => {
console.error(error);
response.status(500).json({ error: "Internal server error" });
});
app.listen(3000, () => {
console.log("Orders API listening on port 3000");
});
Start the service and request /orders/123. With the tutorial’s alertThreshold: 1 setting, the first matching failure is intended to notify immediately, making it convenient for a local smoke test. The final handler still returns HTTP 500 with the JSON error body, so the alerting layer does not become the owner of the client-facing response.

How does grouping reduce repeat-error noise?
Grouping treats repeated instances of an equivalent failure as one alerting problem instead of one message per request. A grouping policy normally considers details such as the error identity and context, then applies a threshold or cooldown before another notification. The tutorial demonstrates only the explicit alertThreshold option and says the default grouping policy is a better production starting point; it does not publish exact default threshold or cooldown values.
Use an immediate threshold while testing
Set grouping: { alertThreshold: 1 } when you need to prove that the middleware is connected and the notifier can deliver. This setting intentionally favors visibility over noise control, so it is appropriate for a controlled local test, not an assumption about production traffic.
Let the default policy shape production behavior
Remove the test override and review the package’s current documentation for the default grouping and cooldown semantics. Because the tutorial does not state those numeric defaults, do not document or depend on a particular count or time window without checking the release you install. Validate the behavior with a repeatable test that triggers the same failure several times and records which events produce notifications.

Remember that grouping is local to one process
The tutorial describes grouping and cooldown state as process-local. A restart clears that state, and separate Node.js workers or replicas do not share it. A deployment can therefore produce a new alert for an already-known error, while two replicas can notify independently.

Which notification destinations can I use?
The tutorial names three notifier categories: console output, Telegram, and a generic HTTPS webhook. The exact constructor options and payload fields can change with the beta, so use the current package documentation for destination-specific configuration rather than copying an undocumented shape.
Console notifications
consoleNotifier() is the least complicated destination and is useful for development, CI checks, or a service whose runtime logs are already collected elsewhere. It confirms that Wotchi received the error without introducing a network dependency.
Telegram notifications
The example reads a bot token and chat ID from environment variables. Keep both values outside the repository, restrict who can read them, and rotate them if they appear in a log or commit. Test delivery in a non-production chat before enabling it for a live service.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHTTPS webhooks
A webhook lets you forward an alert to an endpoint that your team controls or to an incident workflow. Protect the endpoint with authentication and transport security, and confirm how the current notifier handles timeouts or delivery failures. The supplied tutorial does not establish a particular webhook provider, payload schema, retry policy, or delivery guarantee.
How do I keep the normal Express response and protect sensitive data?
Keep a final error handler in your application even when Wotchi is enabled. It should choose the HTTP status, return a stable client-safe body, and perform your existing request logging. Never send raw stack traces, database connection strings, access tokens, or personal data in a public response merely because an alert contains them.
Wotchi is intended to normalize and redact errors before notification, but the tutorial does not define a complete redaction policy. Treat that behavior as an aid, not as proof that every secret is removed. Review representative alerts from validation failures, database errors, authentication failures, and upstream timeouts; redact at the point where sensitive values enter the error object, and ensure notifier logs do not expose credentials.

Use stable service and environment names such as orders-api and production. Those fields make alerts searchable when several services share one destination, while the HTTP response remains deliberately generic.
Is Wotchi enough for production observability?
Wotchi is a focused in-process alerting layer, not a hosted observability system. It can be a useful low-complexity addition when you mainly need grouped error notifications, but the creator’s tutorial explicitly identifies capabilities it does not provide.
| Capability | Wotchi’s described scope | What a larger observability platform adds |
|---|---|---|
| Grouping scope | State is local to one Node.js process and resets on restart. | Cross-replica or centralized grouping. |
| Incident history | No durable hosted incident history is supplied. | Persistent events, search, retention, and incident timelines. |
| Telemetry | Error notification is the focus. | Dashboards, metrics, traces, and distributed request correlation. |
| Paging workflows | Simple destinations such as console, Telegram, or webhook. | Coordinated paging, escalation, acknowledgements, and on-call schedules. |
| Operations | Small application-level integration. | Additional agents, configuration, storage, and platform administration. |
Choose the in-process approach when local grouping and straightforward delivery solve the immediate problem and losing state on restart is acceptable. Keep or add a full observability platform when you need a durable cross-service history, distributed tracing, coordinated paging, or a single view across replicas. The source provides no measured performance, reliability, or price comparison, so a decision should be based on those capability requirements rather than an assumed ranking.
What should I test before enabling alerts in production?
Exercise both the alert path and the ordinary request path. A practical validation sequence is:
- Run the service with the console notifier and the threshold-one test setting.
- Trigger a known route error and verify one notification plus the expected HTTP status and response body.
- Trigger the same failure repeatedly and observe the grouping behavior documented for your installed version.
- Restart the process, repeat the failure, and confirm that you understand the reset of local grouping state.
- Run multiple workers or replicas if you deploy them, checking whether independent notifications are acceptable.
- Replace the console destination with a test Telegram chat or webhook endpoint and verify that credentials are supplied only through environment or secret management.
- Send errors containing representative sensitive fields and inspect every emitted message and log line for leakage.
- Simulate an unavailable notifier endpoint and confirm that your service still has a defined response and logging behavior.
The final test matters because notification delivery is an auxiliary concern: an alerting failure should not turn an otherwise handled application error into an unhandled request failure. Confirm the exact failure behavior against the package version you deploy.
What are the common integration mistakes?
Registering the middleware in the wrong place
If Wotchi is before the routes, route errors may bypass it; if it is after the final error handler, the response may already be committed. Move app.use(wotchiErrorHandler(wotchi)) to the boundary immediately after route registration and before the application’s four-argument handler.

Using a moving beta in a stable deployment
The install example uses @beta, but a moving tag can change behavior between builds. Lock the tested version and re-check compatibility whenever you upgrade.
Assuming undocumented defaults
The tutorial does not give numeric default thresholds or cooldowns. Do not promise a specific alert frequency; inspect the current release and test it under representative repeat failures.
Expecting replicas to share suppression state
Process-local grouping cannot coordinate a cluster. If duplicate alerts across workers are unacceptable, route events through a centralized system or retain a broader observability solution.

Replacing the final error handler
Wotchi is not a substitute for your status-code and response policy. Keep the final handler explicit and preserve the client contract your API already documents.
What is a sensible rollout plan?
Start in development with the console notifier and alertThreshold: 1. Confirm import paths, route placement, response behavior, and the shape of emitted alerts. In a staging environment, test the default grouping policy, restart behavior, and the real destination with non-sensitive data. For production, pin a reviewed package version, provide credentials through secret management, document the process-local limitations, and decide whether a centralized observability platform remains necessary for replicas, traces, durable history, or on-call coordination.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Wotchi keep an alert history after the Node.js process restarts?
No durable history is described. Because grouping and cooldown state are process-local, a restart removes that in-memory context; retain centralized logs or an observability system if you need to investigate incidents across restarts.
Can I run Wotchi on several Express replicas without duplicate alerts?
You can install it in each replica, but the described state is not shared between processes. Each replica may therefore make its own grouping and notification decision, so cluster-wide deduplication requires an external coordination layer.
