Computex Taipei 2010 showed that “tablet PC” was not yet one settled product category. The event’s slate designs ranged from Windows 7 tablets built around Intel Atom components to ASUS’s planned dockable Eee Pad, while Android devices and future platform announcements pointed in other directions. Some devices were prototypes or ODM designs, not confirmed retail products.

What counted as a tablet at Computex 2010?

At Computex Taipei in Taipei, Taiwan, around June 1–6, 2010, vendors and platform makers used “tablet” for products with notably different sizes, operating systems, processors and intended roles. In Microsoft’s Computex keynote, executive Steve Guggenheimer described “slates, or pads, or tablets” as a new category for the PC space. That framing captured the moment: the label was broad, and the devices did not yet converge on a single design.

The clearest common thread among many Windows models was their PC-like hardware. Engadget’s June 3 roundup reported that most of the Windows slates it surveyed had 10-inch screens, Windows 7 Premium and Intel Atom Z- or N-series processors. That was a useful snapshot of the show-floor group, not a census of every tablet at Computex or a claim that every listed model shared those specifications.

Engadget also cautioned that many entries were ODM designs and that pricing and availability details were missing. A device being shown at the event therefore establishes its presence or demonstration, not that consumers could buy it, or that a particular configuration would reach retail.

MSI Wind Pad 100 series

MSI presented its Wind Pad 100 tablet series around Computex, as reported by Japanese technology outlet ITmedia. The evidence identifies a product line, not the eventual availability or retail configuration of every model in the series.

Viliv X10: a non-final 10-inch Wintel model

Engadget described the Viliv X10 as a 10-inch Wintel tablet prototype. Options listed for the model included Intel Atom Z520 or Z530 processors, 1GB of RAM and a 32GB or 64GB SSD. The unit shown was not final, so those options should be read as reported configuration details rather than proof of a shipping specification.

Compal NEZ00 and CTL 2go PC Slate

The Compal NEZ00 was reported as a 10-inch Windows 7 tablet with an Intel Atom N450 and 1GB of RAM. It is an example from the show-floor slate group, not evidence of a confirmed retail SKU.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

The CTL 2go PC Slate illustrated the variety of details vendors were adding to PC-like slates. Engadget reported an Atom N450 processor, two USB ports, mini-VGA, and a Blue Dolphin skin layered over Windows. These are reported show-floor specifications and software details, not results from independent testing.

Other named Windows designs

Engadget also listed the CZC P10T, FIC Tycoon and Malata PC-A10001 among the Windows slates on display, with selected specifications taken from show-floor placards. Placard information is useful for identifying what a device was presented as, but it does not independently establish performance, final hardware or retail availability.

ASUS Eee Pad: one slate, several planned ways to use it

ASUS presented two Eee Pad models, the EP121 and EP101TC, alongside a separate product called the Eee Tablet at its press conference, according to contemporaneous ITmedia coverage. The names refer to distinct devices or lines: the Eee Tablet should not be treated as another Eee Pad model.

EP121 and its planned dock

The EP121 was reported as a Windows 7 Home Premium slate with a planned CULV Intel Core 2 Duo processor and approximately ten hours of battery life. Those details were presented as plans or specifications at the time, not independently measured results or confirmation of the eventual retail product.

Its distinguishing idea was the dock. ASUS materials, as reported by ITmedia, described using the EP121 on its own as a slate or connecting it to a dock for laptop-like use or a display-and-keyboard configuration. The concept made the EP121 less like a bare tablet and more like a transformable PC. The reported material does not establish real-world battery life or how well those modes worked in practice.

EP101TC and Eee Tablet

The EP101TC was shown with the EP121, but the available contemporaneous account does not support treating it as the same product or assigning it the EP121’s reported processor, operating system or battery details. ASUS also showed the Eee Tablet as a separate device. Keeping those names distinct matters because “Eee Pad” and “Eee Tablet” were not interchangeable labels at the event.

Android devices brought a different scale and platform

Qualcomm’s May 31, 2010 pre-show announcement said that the Dell Streak and Huawei S7 were among the Snapdragon-powered devices to be demonstrated during Computex. Qualcomm described the Streak as a 5-inch Android tablet. These were mobile-platform counterpoints to the 10-inch Windows slates: the devices differed in scale and operating system as well as processor platform.

Qualcomm also said more than 140 device designs had launched or were in design with its Snapdragon platform. That was the company’s own 2010 figure, not an independently verified count of products shipping at Computex or a tablet-market total. The announcement establishes planned demonstrations, not the eventual commercial status of every named device.

What was announced for later, rather than shown as a shipping tablet?

Intel announced Oak Trail on June 1, 2010, as a future tablet-oriented Atom platform and targeted availability for early 2011. It was a roadmap item, not a platform buyers could purchase as a Computex 2010 product.

Intel also described Acer’s future work on an Atom- and MeeGo-based tablet. That establishes a stated direction and plan; it does not establish that a specific Acer tablet shipped on the announced schedule. Intel’s release cited more than 50 million Intel-based netbooks sold in the preceding two years. That company-published figure supplied PC-market context, not tablet sales data.

The comparison is about the products’ reported positioning and maturity, not a performance ranking. The available event coverage supplies announcements and selected specifications, not independent benchmarks or hands-on results.

What the Computex roundup can—and cannot—establish

  • Computex 2010 presented several competing definitions of a tablet: netbook-like Windows slates, a planned dockable Windows PC, Android mobile devices and a future MeeGo direction.
  • Show-floor presence and vendor announcements do not by themselves prove a finished retail product, final specifications, price or availability.
  • The period reports do not establish comparative speed, practical battery life, usability or product quality, and they are not a complete inventory of every tablet at the event.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
