Neither co-packaged optics (CPO) nor pluggable optics is universally better for an AI data center. Pluggable transceivers remain the practical choice when hot replacement, multivendor sourcing, varied link reaches, and incremental upgrades matter. CPO becomes compelling in high-radix AI fabrics where front-panel modules create unacceptable electrical loss, power draw, port-density, or cooling pressure. For most operators, the sound architecture is hybrid: pluggables across many top-of-rack, spine, and data-center-interconnect links, with CPO reserved for selected aggregation or core switches.
The decision is therefore per network tier, not a single-fabric referendum. Compare power per bit, electrical reach, bandwidth density, thermal design, serviceability, supplier flexibility, reliability, and lifecycle cost at the same time. Published efficiency figures are useful directional evidence, but they come from different technologies and measurement boundaries.
What is the difference between pluggable optics and co-packaged optics?
Pluggable optics place a removable optical transceiver in a front-panel cage, while CPO places optical engines in the same package as, or immediately beside, the switch ASIC. That physical boundary determines how far high-speed electrical signals travel before becoming light, and it affects power, cooling, maintenance, and upgrade options.
How a pluggable link is built
In a conventional pluggable design, the switch ASIC sends an electrical signal across the switch board, through traces and connectors, to a front-panel module. The transceiver performs electrical-to-optical conversion, and the fiber exits the module. A technician can remove that module without replacing the switch chassis, and a new module can often be selected for a different reach, wavelength, or connector type, subject to switch coding and interoperability.

How a CPO link is built
With CPO, the electro-optical conversion is integrated into the switch package or placed immediately adjacent to the ASIC. Fiber couples close to the ASIC, so the highest-speed electrical path is much shorter. NVIDIA’s 2025 technical description puts it plainly: “In contrast, switches with co-packaged optics (CPO) integrate the electro-optical conversion directly onto the switch package.”
This integration removes some board-level electrical distance and front-panel bottlenecks, but it couples the optical engine, package, thermal solution, and switch silicon into one platform. A failed optical engine may require package-level repair or replacement of the complete switch platform rather than a quick module swap.
Where LPO, NPO, and optical I/O fit
Linear pluggable optics (LPO), near-package optics (NPO), and optical I/O are related approaches, not synonyms. LPO generally reduces or removes digital signal-processing functions in a pluggable module; NPO moves optics closer to the ASIC without necessarily placing them in the same package; optical I/O describes an optical interface integrated at the chip or package boundary. Specify the electrical and packaging boundary whenever comparing these architectures.

Why are these architectures important for AI clusters?
AI clusters connect large numbers of GPUs with sustained east-west traffic. As switch radix and lane rates rise, the electrical path from an ASIC to a front-panel cage consumes more signal margin and power, while the number of modules concentrated at the panel makes airflow and heat removal harder. CPO addresses those constraints by shortening the electrical path; pluggables address them indirectly through familiar, replaceable modules and a broad ecosystem.
The pressure is increasing with higher-rate interfaces. An IEEE 802.3 market update citing an Omdia 2025 forecast estimates a 36% compound annual growth rate for AI-network optical modules from 2024 through 2030, with 800G modules forecast at 44% CAGR. The forecast covers 400G and 800G QSFP-DD and OSFP modules, 1.6T OSFP, and later 3.2T modules. Growth does not imply that CPO displaces pluggables; it expands demand for both approaches at different network layers.
How much power and signal-integrity improvement can CPO provide?
CPO can reduce electrical loss and interface power when a conventional board-and-connector path becomes the limiting factor, but the size of the gain depends on the comparison technology, switch SerDes, optical engine, and measurement boundary. Do not transfer one vendor’s interface figure directly to an entire data-center power budget.

| NVIDIA product comparison, 2025 | Interface power | About 30 W versus as low as 9 W | Vendor-reported per-interface figures; “as low as” is not a guaranteed operating value |
The IEEE figures compare defined architectures in a published analysis, whereas NVIDIA’s figures describe a product comparison. The two sources should be read as evidence that shorter electrical paths can matter, not as a single universal CPO specification.
Where should a data center use pluggable optics?
Pluggables fit links where operational flexibility and field replacement outweigh the absolute minimum interface power. They remain the mainstay for many top-of-rack and spine connections, data-center interconnects, and enterprise links.

Top-of-rack and access links
Top-of-rack switches often have mixed connection lengths and a changing server population. Removable modules let an operator select short-reach, multimode, single-mode, or other qualified variants per port instead of designing every port around one integrated optical engine.
Spine and data-center-interconnect links
Spine and DCI designs commonly require different reaches and sometimes different wavelengths. Pluggables permit that mix and allow a link to be upgraded independently of the switch chassis. They are also easier to source from multiple qualified suppliers, reducing dependence on one package and optical-engine roadmap.
Operations with strict replacement targets
If a maintenance team is organized around hot-swappable parts, spare transceivers, and field replacement, pluggables preserve that workflow. The trade-off is that front-panel cages, connectors, board traces, and module DSPs can consume more power and signal margin at extreme lane rates.

Where does CPO make the most sense?
CPO is most defensible where bandwidth density, electrical reach, power, and cooling are binding constraints rather than theoretical concerns. That usually means selected high-radix AI-fabric switches, aggregation layers, or core switches with many very-high-speed ports.
Large GPU fabrics
GPU fabrics can concentrate many links in a small number of switches. If front-panel pluggables force excessive interface power or leave insufficient signal margin, moving conversion beside the ASIC can simplify the high-speed electrical path and increase usable density.
High-radix spine and core platforms
A high-radix switch has many ports terminating around one ASIC. As the port count and lane rate rise, the cumulative thermal load of front-panel optics and the board area needed for cages become harder to manage. CPO can relieve those constraints, provided the package and cooling system are designed together.
Links with short electrical reach requirements
CPO is especially valuable when the board-level distance between ASIC and optical conversion would otherwise consume a large part of the signal budget. It is less compelling when the switch has moderate radix, electrical traces are short enough, or the operational value of independent module replacement dominates.

How should an operator design a hybrid CPO and pluggable fabric?
Assign the architecture by tier and constraint. A common pattern uses pluggables at the edge of the fabric and CPO in the most demanding aggregation or core layer.
Step 1: Map every link class
Inventory top-of-rack, leaf-spine, spine-core, GPU-to-switch, and DCI links. Record lane rate, port count, reach, connector, wavelength, expected airflow, and whether a link must be changed without replacing the switch.
Step 2: Establish a power and thermal budget
Measure interface power at the switch level, then include host SerDes, optical modules or engines, fans, and the rack’s cooling capacity. Keep the measurement boundary explicit; an interface-only number cannot be compared with a full-switch number.
Step 3: Check electrical reach and signal margin
Model the trace, connector, and package path at the target signaling rate. If equalization or DSP power is consuming the margin, CPO or another near-package architecture deserves evaluation. If the path remains comfortably within the design budget, the operational advantages of pluggables may carry more weight.
Step 4: Separate service tiers
Define which layers require technician-replaceable optics and which can tolerate platform-level replacement. Keep pluggables on links with frequent reach changes, varied wavelengths, or strict field-repair objectives; consider CPO where failures are rare but density and power are continuously constrained.
Step 5: Validate interoperability
For pluggable ports, verify cage type, module coding, firmware support, fiber connector, wavelength, reach, and host SerDes mode. For CPO, validate the complete switch, optical-engine, fiber-attach, management, and thermal stack rather than treating the optical engine as an interchangeable module.
Step 6: Build a failure and spare model
Calculate the number of spare pluggables required for each reach and wavelength. For CPO, plan spare switches or vendor repair capacity, packaging-level diagnostics, and the time required to return an integrated platform.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Step 8: Reassess at each bandwidth generation
Do not freeze the architecture for the life of the facility. A layer that favors pluggables at 400G may face a different power and density equation at 800G, 1.6T, or 3.2T.
How do serviceability and lifecycle costs differ?
Pluggables generally minimize the scope of a field repair: isolate the port, clean and inspect the fiber, remove the failed module, insert a qualified spare, and verify link state. The switch remains in service for other ports, and an upgrade can target only links that need a new reach or rate.
CPO reduces the number of independently replaceable optical parts. That can lower module-level handling and front-panel complexity, but it shifts maintenance toward integrated-platform procedures. A failure involving the optical engine, fiber attach, package, or thermal interface may require a complete switch replacement or depot repair. The resulting cost depends on spare-switch inventory, service-level agreements, downtime tolerance, and the vendor’s repair process, not just the optical engine’s unit price.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Lifecycle planning should also account for migration. A pluggable switch can often retain its chassis while modules move from one generation to another. A CPO upgrade may require a new ASIC package, optical engine, board, and cooling design together.
What reliability and manufacturing risks does CPO introduce?
CPO shifts risk into heterogeneous integration. IEEE work on heterogeneous integration in 2025 identifies interacting electrical, optical, thermal, mechanical, and materials challenges.
- Optical coupling and fiber attach: alignment near the ASIC must survive assembly tolerances, vibration, and service handling.
- Thermal crosstalk: the ASIC and optical engines share a dense thermal environment, so cooling changes can affect both components.
- Mechanical packaging: package warpage, connector access, and fiber routing become part of switch reliability.
- Manufacturing yield: a defect in an integrated package can reduce the yield of an otherwise functional switch assembly.
- Materials and aging: dissimilar materials and repeated temperature cycles can stress optical and electrical interfaces.
Pluggables are not risk-free: they add connectors, removable interfaces, module firmware, and front-panel airflow obstructions. Their advantage is that many failure modes are isolated to a replaceable unit rather than embedded in the switch package.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What standards and interoperability work should architects track?
Standards work on high-speed electrical interfaces and module management is intended to let advanced pluggables, LPO, and CPO coexist. Track OIF CEI developments and management interoperability, but do not assume that an electrical-interface standard solves package-level optical coupling, thermal, mechanical, or repair issues.
For each candidate platform, request an interoperability statement covering the switch ASIC mode, module or optical-engine management, firmware dependencies, lane mapping, breakout behavior, and supported diagnostic telemetry. “800G” alone does not identify a compatible implementation.

What should you verify before buying 800G optics?
The clearest product description for a pluggable search is “800G QSFP-DD optical transceiver,” but the label is only a starting point. Verify all of the following against the switch and the planned fiber plant:
- Whether the cage accepts QSFP-DD or OSFP; the two form factors are not interchangeable.
- Fiber connector type and polarity.
- Wavelength, fiber type, and maximum supported reach.
- Breakout mode and lane mapping, if a 2×400G or other split is required.
- Vendor coding, firmware, and switch qualification requirements.
- Operating temperature, airflow direction, and the module’s stated power under the intended mode.
- Optical inspection, cleaning, and link-test procedures for commissioning and fault isolation.
Fiber inspection and cleaning kits, along with optical-link test equipment, are operational necessities for high-rate deployments. They do not substitute for checking host compatibility and thermal capacity.
Are AI data centers required to use CPO?
No. AI data centers can build effective fabrics with pluggable optics, especially when the design values hot swap, multiple suppliers, varied reaches, and independent link upgrades. CPO is a targeted response to extreme density, power, cooling, and electrical-reach constraints, not a prerequisite for AI networking.

What does the market trajectory mean for network planning?
The Omdia 2025 forecast cited by IEEE 802.3 points to rapid growth in AI optical connectivity through 2030, including 400G and 800G QSFP-DD and OSFP, 1.6T OSFP, and later 3.2T modules. That trajectory argues for modular planning rather than a one-time commitment to a single optical architecture.
Reserve rack power, cooling, cable pathways, and management capacity for higher-rate pluggables even if the first deployment is 400G. At the same time, evaluate CPO roadmaps for the specific spine or core platforms where front-panel optics are approaching practical limits. A hybrid design can adopt each generation where it creates measurable value.
What is the practical recommendation?
Start with pluggables as the default for edge, many spine, DCI, and enterprise links because they preserve field replacement, multivendor choice, and per-link upgrades. Introduce CPO selectively in high-radix AI aggregation or core switches only after a quantified power, signal-integrity, density, and cooling analysis shows that integration outweighs the loss of module-level serviceability. Review the decision at every bandwidth generation; the right answer is a tiered architecture that matches each link’s constraints.

Can a CPO optical engine be replaced without replacing the switch?
Usually not in the same field-service manner as a pluggable. The optical engine is part of an integrated package or tightly coupled assembly, so replacement commonly follows the platform vendor’s package-level repair or whole-switch return process.
Does 800G automatically mean OSFP rather than QSFP-DD?
No. The 800G rate is available in both OSFP and QSFP-DD ecosystems. Check the switch cage, lane configuration, connector, firmware, and vendor qualification before ordering.
Is LPO the same thing as CPO?
No. LPO is a pluggable approach that reduces or removes DSP functions, while CPO changes the physical placement of optical conversion relative to the switch ASIC. Their electrical paths, management models, and service procedures differ.
How should spare inventory differ for CPO and pluggable deployments?
Pluggable designs need spares by form factor, reach, wavelength, and coding variant. CPO designs generally require spare integrated switches or a contracted depot-repair path, because an individual optical engine is not normally stocked as a field-swappable part.
